Cido Asthma Foundation is an Independent Nigerian charity organization working to conquer asthma in the country and create adequate awareness of the disorder in partnership with people with asthma, and all who share their concern, through a combination of education, information, communication, support, research, and advocacy. Some projects include the “SCHOOL ASTHMA AWARENESS CAMPAIGN (SAAC),” an initiative with the youth in our schools, or the “EDUCATE SOCIETY & COMMUNITY ON ASTHMA & PREVENTION (ESCAP),” a program with the larger society as target (local Government, Towns, Cities, Villages and Rural Communities).
World Asthma Day, celebrated annually on the first Tuesday of May, serves as an important opportunity to raise awareness about asthma and its impact on millions of people worldwide. This year, World Asthma Day falls on May 6, 2025, and its theme, “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All,” focuses on the need to ensure that people with asthma have access to the medications necessary for effective management of their condition.
Cido Asthma Foundation,Medical Director, Dr Wisdom Okeze who spoke at the event to commemorate World Asthma Day with the theme ”Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All.” at the Obi Nwaokocha Cooperative Event Center,Ibusa said asthma, a condition involving the airway may cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, cough and wheezing, and when poorly controlled could become deadly and result to death unexpectedly.
Dr Wisdom Okeze
According to him, poor control of asthma symptoms in Nigeria occurs when many people cannot assess the severity of their symptoms very well and many people don’t use their inhalers appropriately while deaths occur when they don’t use appropriate inhalers when an asthma attack happens.
“Many asthma patients hesitate to use inhalers, rather they want to use the asthma medications in tablet or injection forms. Inhalers are the best available medicines for it because the drugs go directly to the windpipe where the problem actually is.
“Inhalation corticosteroid is the key cornerstone for the management of asthma; many people still take tablets that is why their asthma is properly controlled. Some don’t know the appropriate drug to use. Some also take herbal concoctions believing that it is going to cure them.
“Asthma is not curable but it is treatable. With good asthma control, there wouldn’t be nighttime or early morning asthma symptoms and limitation in doing any activity including sports. There wouldn’t be any exacerbation of asthma symptoms or visit to emergency units of hospital or admission for asthma.”
One of the resource person Prof.(Dr) Ijeoma Nduka, said the use of asthma drugs in the tablet form is being discouraged because, over time, people could suffer from hypertension, diabetes and even kidney or heart failure. “It is the same medicine just that the drugs are powdered and put inside an inhaler. If oral medication is taken, the drug gets absorbed into the body and reaches other organs, which can have more side effects. In the case of inhalation therapy, there is no major side effect, rather it works effectively,” she added.
Prof. Nduka declared that many things including dust, fumes, animal danders, strong perfumes or odours, cockroach droppings and even freshly cut grass, fumes from heating oil can trigger asthmatic attacks and it is important for individuals to learn their triggers and avoid such things.
She said asthmatics should always carry their rescue inhalers at all times because they cannot predict when they may have an attack and will require it for their treatment. She criticised the continued inclusion of oral salbutamol and corticosteroids in the country’s Essential Medicines List (EML), despite international recommendations against their use.
The oral medications, she explained, are associated with harmful side effects such as tremors, irregular heart rhythms and increased risk of asthma attacks and death. However, the drug remains more accessible than safer inhaled alternatives due to cost and outdated prescription practices despite World Health Organisation (WHO) warnings.
“Once an asthmatic attack starts within 5 minutes, if an individual is not rescued by using inhaler, the person can die.” She asked that people stop stigmatising people that have inhalers or individuals with asthma attacks.
According to the second resource persons, Dr Segun Dairo, Delta -based Public Health Physician, highlighted air pollution, hot weather and pollen as significant triggers of asthma attacks, shedding light on the intricate relationship between environmental factors and respiratory health. He said that asthma, characterised by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, affects millions of people globally, with symptoms ranging from wheezing and shortness of breath to coughing and chest tightness. While genetics play a role in asthma development, he said that environmental factors could worsen symptoms and trigger attacks.
According to him, studies have shown that air pollution, including particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide, can irritate the airways and worsen asthma symptoms, particularly in urban areas with high pollution levels.
“By promoting awareness and education, we can help individuals better understand their condition, recognize triggers, and take proactive steps to prevent exacerbations.
“Ultimately, the matron of Cido Asthma Foundation, Mrs Precious Uche Obi(BNSc. RPHN/RPON) said by empowering individuals with the tools they need to manage their asthma, we can work towards improving overall health outcomes and reducing the impact of asthma on individuals’ daily lives. We salute all the healthcare workers and scientist that are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of this disorder on the general population.
“We also want to use this opportunity to encourage asthma patients to rely on information from their healthcare providers and continue to take their medications regularly and avoid triggers. They should always maintain proper cough etiquette. Remember to keep safe and stay healthy,” Matron stated.
Dr Obioma Okoye who is the forth resourse person, said that Asthma can be avoided by following the subsequent points: Avoiding exposure to asthma triggers such as air pollution, cold air, fragrances etc
Avoid contact with allergens, Avoid smoke from cigarettes, candles, incense, and fireworks, Staying away from sick people (cold or the flu) Keep the surroundings dust free, Taking vaccinations on time to prevent pneumonia, diphtheria, tetanus, zoster vaccine, and whooping cough. She said the disease is not curable but can be adequately controlled to allow the sufferer leave a virtually normal life. In all cases it is extremely important to identify and avoid triggers.
In closing remark,Pastor Idowu Okeze, who is the founder of Obi Nwaokocha Okeze Foundation issued a passionate plea to all Nigerians, including policymakers, civil society organizations, and corporate leaders, to rally behind the cause. “Asthma does not discriminate,” he said. “Ironically, we only seem to discover how many of our politicians are asthmatic when they are arrested. Let them be part of this movement now—not out of compulsion, but from compassion and foresight.”
“As we mark World Asthma Day 2025, let us remember that no one should die simply because they cannot afford to breathe. The time to act—for the air we breathe, the health we deserve, and the lives we can still save—is now.”
Pastor Okeze stressed that the ability to breathe should not be a privilege but a basic human right. “Inhaled corticosteroids—the cornerstone of asthma management—must be within reach of every Nigerian, regardless of their income level or where they live,” he said.
Let’s keep moving forward — for the patients who deserve better, and for the future of respiratory health.
Cido Asthma Foundation extends warm greetings as we celebrate World Asthma Day 2025. This year’s theme, chosen by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), is *”Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All.”*
GINA reminds us that empowering individuals with asthma through education is crucial for them to effectively manage their condition. This knowledge empowers them to understand their triggers and medications, and to recognize when to seek medical attention.
As healthcare professionals in Cido Asthma Foundation, we play a vital role in this empowerment process. GINA encourages us to continuously deepen our awareness of the latest evidence-based practices for asthma management, particularly research on avoidable morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. By staying current, we can provide our patients with clear and accurate information about their asthma and treatment options, ultimately enabling us to develop personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual’s specific needs and circumstances.
By working together, we can empower individuals with asthma in Delta State to take control of their health and live fulfilling lives. Let us use World Asthma Day 2025 as an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to education and empowerment in the fight against asthma.
Think of filling a plastic bag with some water tie it then puncture a few tiny holes in it and try to squeeze the water out. Do you notice it takes a lot of effort and even some resistance for the water to come out as compared to if you had punctured larger holes? Our lungs are like air bags that inflate and deflate as we breathe in or out. One of the most common conditions that affect how the lungs perform this essential activity of breathing is Asthma.
Asthma is a non-communicable disease, meaning it can’t be transferred through air particles or coming in contact with someone that has it, and it affects both children and adults but is more prevalent in children as a chronic disease. Asthma is a condition characterized by the narrowing and swelling of the airways (the tube-like structures that allow the passage of air) and most times produces excessive mucus. Asthma has no cure and has great financial implications on both the affected patients and their families causing them to miss either school or work. One good thing is that it can be controlled but can lead to death in very serious cases of asthma attack.
The cause of asthma is still not fully known but most asthmatic patients are usually born with it, which speaks to the fact that it can be as a result of genetics or some are detected in early childhood due to factors like air pollution, respiratory infections, allergies, etc. The symptoms of asthma ranging from difficulty in breathing to cough, wheezing, red and itchy eyes, excessive mucus production, chest pains and sometimes difficulty in breathing.
According to the Economic Times report on Asthma in 2023, about 339 million people are affected globally and there has been a record of its increase by 50% every decade. In Nigeria, the prevalence is very high ranking her as one of the leading countries with high rate of asthma globally approximating 13 million people living with clinical asthma.
In view of this year’s World Asthma Day which talks about empowerment through asthma education, we thought to share on how to prevent asthmatic attacks and also tips on how to help someone experiencing an asthmatic attack.
How to prevent an Asthmatic Attack
Identify the triggers: this is the first and most crucial step, once you’re able to identify what causes you to have an attack, it would be easy to eliminate. It could be dust, pollen, certain fragrances, household detergents or elements within your home or outside environment. While most triggers are common to asthma sufferers, there are those specific to each individual, so identify yours.
Avoid the triggers: sometimes complete elimination may not be possible for many reasons but try as much as possible to avoid or stay away from them to prevent attacks. For example, if someone in your house uses a fragrance that triggers you, then avoid being there when that fragrance is being used
Avoid smoke of any type
Treat colds early: the best bet is to prevent colds (catarrh) by not frequenting cold places or making sure you’re well covered when there’s a decrease in temperatures but if you eventually get a cold be sure to treat it immediately.
Take your medications as instructed: defaulting medications can cause severe attacks at every slight trigger so to make sure you’re protected make sure to take them as prescribed.
Keep your inhaler handy
Eat healthy: This can never be overestimated. Eating healthy involves having a diet filled with fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated, avoiding oily and salty foods, all of these help in keeping the immune system healthy.
How to help someone experiencing an attack
Help them sit down and reduce excessive clothing especially if they’re tight or constrictive and help then access their inhaler
Ask them to take slow but deep breaths
Assist them in using their inhaler if the attack doesn’t subside (use the 2:2:10 rule, two puffs every two minutes, up to 10 puffs)
Give them reassurance: panic can make an asthma attack worse so make to help them calm down and know they will be fine.
Make sure the person is away from triggers: you may be countering your efforts of helping if the person is still around triggers so make sure the person is not within harms-way.
Seek emergency help: if the person doesn’t seem to be getting better, reach out for help by calling emergency numbers available or getting the person to the nearest hospital but follow the above steps first.
Gone are the days where people don’t know what to do in times of emergencies and knowledge is key in saving lives and preventing casualties.

Below are the juicy excerpts as told by the man who has fought so many wars and won all:
Can you tell us about your background and how you ventured into the Real Estate industry?
My name is Lucky Blessing Odiakachukwu Abuah from Ezukwu/Anyalobum Village in Ibusa Community, Oshimili North LGA, Delta State. I had a tough childhood upbringing and it helped me all my working life. I have not honestly taken annual leave or months off work. I just enjoy working. That is the first contradiction about me.I started out as a Rental Agent back which played a pivotal role before I transitioned into the Sales of properties, I gradually transmuted into an astute Real Estate Developer which birthed Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited. It’s been an extensive process for me. They say you don’t grow big to manage well, you manage well to grow big. Over the years I have learnt and honed numerous skills. From leadership, team building, communication, sales and marketing, people skills the list goes on.
Sir, you are recognized as one of the Most Distinguished CEOs to look out for in 2023. What does it take to be successful in a business environment like Nigeria?
Well, thank you very much for this opportunity and privilege accorded me and my company, it’s a privilege and an honour, so I say a very big thank you to the editorial board of Association of Community Newspaper Publishers (ACNPN).But I must say that one person does not and cannot make success because there’s nothing like self-made success or millionaire, it takes a team effort among other success factors
Here in Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited, I can’t acclaim the success to myself because the success of the company (or my success so to speak) is built on team spirit, trust, dedication to work among other factors. I must also mention here that the management team of this company played a vital role in this professed success.
Again, it takes team spirit to build success in an environment like Nigeria among other factors of success such as dedication, trust, hard work, commitment to your goal etc.
Give us a background of Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited
Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited was basically incorporated to solve housing problems in Nigeria, Africa and beyond. I have always been an investor, investing in stocks and shares and having an eye in real estate but for capital, but honestly, these words inspired to me delve into real estate, just to solve this pending time bomb, and of course as an entrepreneur we turn every passion into a business.
Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited is built on this premise, playing its role to solve a possible housing deficit problem in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.
What is the Vision and Mission of Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited and how much of it would you say has been achieved?
Our vision is simply to be the most foremost real estate service provider, providing housing and real estate services at a world-class standard.
And our Mission; To provide real estate services, making housing affordable to all in a profitable, standard, ethical and sustainable manner.
So far, I would say we are yet to achieve it, because if we have, then, there is no need to remain in business, however, we are proud to say that we have made many Landlord today, even those that never believe they can be landlord owing to their income level, but right now they can be proud to say “With Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited, I am a Landlord.”
Tell us about the services you render at Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited.
Basically we sell lands and properties, developing new lands/estate. We also do property documentation, lands surveying, property management/maintenance, architectural/structural designs, constructions and other real estate services. We make owning landed properties easy irrespective of your income level, social status, educational qualification or any other limiting factor.
How have been sustaining the good performance of your company over the years despite the challenges in the country?
Sustaining good performance in business in a country like Nigeria I must say is like cracking a hard nut, but in anyways, the hard nut needs to be cracked when doing business.
Talking about how, honestly I can’t point out a single factor but I must say that we learn to understand business and market dynamics, know the competition and our competitors and find ways to improve our visibility in our way to gain some level of market share and most especially we improve on our service delivery to maintain and satisfy our customers.
In the face of a competitive business environment in Nigeria, Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited has upheld excellence and good corporate governance. What are the factors responsible for this feat?
Well thank you very much for this remark but I must say that we are yet to attain excellence because I know we still have much work to do especially when facing the supposed giants in the real estate industry, however, if I must say; we have a clear strategy and we try as much as we can to deliver on every promise to our clients.
More so, we ensure discipline and commitment to our corporate goal.
The incidence of collapsed buildings has been attributed to private developers. What is your take on this?
Truly, building collapse can be easily traced to private developers and of course in Nigeria, it is very easy to cast blame when something or anything goes wrong but the fact remains that there are so many other players in the real estate sector and there are so many other factors that can constitute building collapse, though some of this factors can be avoided when there is proper due diligence at every phase of the building.
Well, Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited is building on this failure made by some other private developers and as such we have put up a qualified team of experts that handles all projects and every material purchased must meet the specified standard without any form of compromise whether from client, suppliers or contractors.
Sir, where do you hope to see Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited in the near future
woow… This is a wow question…. I see Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited becoming a household name in the real estate industry. I see Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited among the biggest and second to none real estate companies in Nigeria and beyond. I see 80% of Nigerians investing and/or owning property or portfolio with Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited… the list is endless my brother.
What is your take on the ease of doing business in Nigeria with particular reference to your line of business.
To this question, I will say it is tough doing business in Nigeria, this can be largely traced to the dwindling Naira fall against the dollar. Our economy seems to be built around the dollar and the fall of Naira against the dollar is affecting every sector of the Nigerian economy and let’s not forget that Nigeria seems to be a consuming economy so to speak and not producing. This means virtually everything in Nigeria is imported hence the fall of Naira and it’s really affecting our economy.
No wonder the world bank ranked Nigeria 131st out of 190 countries in 2019 in terms of ease of doing business, I think these statistics says it all.
Referencing it to real estate, the fact is this, real estate is not an essential commodity like rice, garri and the likes, only those who have eaten enough at least can delve or invest in real estate, this means when the economy is not friendly or when a common man has not eaten enough he cannot invest or go into real estate business, however, real estate being a perfectly competitive business according to an economist, that allows for free entry and free exit, anybody with enough capital can invest or go into real estate.
Please share with us your corporate social responsibility?
In many ways, I can’t start mentioning, we have affected our societies positively especially in the various environment where we are developing new lands. Like I said I can’t start mentioning all that, but the thing there is, we are rolling out more plans to impact society and our community in bigger ways come 2024.
What is your advice for Nigeria youth on career pursuit?
Honestly, when it comes to the issue of the youth, in recent times I get scared and worried, why because our youth are no more learning trades or going to school, they say school is a scam and learning a trade is a waste of time.
Anyways, my advice, there is no shortcut to success, internet fraud cannot and will never lead to success but rather to the destruction of both self and the economy. No economy is built on fraud, but rather on entrepreneurship, industrialization, education and the likes.
China is termed an economic giant today because of industrialization, no economy or future can be built on fraud.
No business grows without facing challenges. Tell us about your experience so far.
Truly, no business grows without facing challenges and here in Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited, we had our fair share of challenges and of course, these challenges come at every level of growth.
As a new brand in the market, coupled with stories of failed real estate companies, it was not easy selling, however with doggedness and resilience, selling our corporate values, we were able to break through the market.
And one thing that helped us through then was keeping to our promises. Promise little and delivering more, today we have records of clients across the continent not just in Nigeria.
More so, looking at the bureaucracy in land acquisition, land registration and land titling, this poses considerable difficulty in effective housing delivery, especially in urban cities. For instance, the process of obtaining a certificate of occupancy may take up to 2-5years following normal protocols and the cost is extremely high.
So if I must say there are challenges at every phase of the business, a wise man says, “new levels, new devils “but in anyways, we must conquer and deliver our mandate.
Lack of integrity and contract dishonour is a common feature of Nigeria Business. Tell us about the situation of Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited?
integrity, if I must say, is lacking in the fabrics of an average Nigerian citizen, but you cannot do business without trust, so when it comes to this, we trust with our eyes open. But in Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited, we promise less and deliver more hence gaining the trust of our clients. We honour every contractual term and as a matter of fact, we love reducing all contracts to prints and/or get the endorsement of all involved, so every party involved is clear about his role, responsibility and liability with respect to the contract.
What are some of the significant challenges you have faced in the real estate industry in Nigeria?
One of Nigeria’s most significant challenges in the Real Estate industry is the lack of access to financing for developers and potential homeowners. There is also a lot of bureaucracy and red tape when obtaining necessary permits and approvals, making the development process more difficult and time-consuming. However I welcome the challenges. I’m not one to focus on problems, I see it as a waste of my mental strength; this does not go to say I ignore them, that said, I will rather focus on solving the problem. I am a solution-oriented mind.
What motivates you to keep pushing forward in your work?
My motivation comes from a desire to be the best I can be, to make a positive impact in the world, and to leave a lasting legacy. I am also motivated by my family, my team at Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited, and the numerous people who believe in our mission.
What one piece of advice would you give any aspiring developer reading this interview?
Believe in yourself. The sky is your limit. There’s something I hung in my office, ‘try to look at the earth from the moon, not from the earth to the moon”. That’s the kind of ambition we have here in Hen-Ric Empire Garden Limited, and that’s what I recommend for young people. Don’t see limitations, don’t see challenges, see opportunities in everything. Believe in yourself. You will get there. To stand the test of time, you must have a unique identity and be able to create a captivating value proposition.

But, reacting to the report, the Grassroots Newspaper Publishers Network of Nigeria (GNPN) Delta Council in a statement signed by the Secretary Comrade Precious Eurgo and made available to journalists in Asaba, the Delta State capital, on Tuesday 28th April,2025, declared that the report was misleading, aimed at destroying and tarnishing the good image of the Chairman of Hen-Ric Empire’s Garden Limited, Chief Lucky Abuah.
“Hen-Ric Empire’s Garden Limited, is a Real Estate firm, Marketing, investment, and development company situated in Asaba, Delta State Nigeria. They are duly registered under the Corporate Affairs Commission in Nigeria with REG: 1874198. Hen-Ric Empire’s Garden Limited, operating with a high level of dignity, integrity, and efficiency in all their services and their services cut across property marketing, property investing, property consulting, and property development.
Chief Abuah is a legitimate member of Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. He is never a member of any cult group but does his businesses legally with integrity. And due to the insecurity plaguing the nation, Delta State inclusive, he applied for Police protection which was duly granted.
All their properties are legally documented, thereby free from government acquisition, land grabbers’ troublemakers, or any sort of encumbrances.
“Chief Lucky Abuah, the Chairman of Hen-Ric Empire’s Garden Limited is not a Gun-Runner, Cultist or Land Grabber, but one of Nigeria’s reputable Real Estate mogul and Realtor who carries out his legitimate work of Real Estate in accordance with the extant laws guiding the sector, among others and he has not been found wanting or posing any security threat to either his community or its environs.
“The investigation carried out by the Oodua Integrity Group was done to create disaffection, tarnishing of the image the person of Chief Lucky Abuah because the source(s) of their information is/are questionable. How on earth would an individual or group that claimed to be from South-South zone of Nigeria claimed to have interrogated certain people in the community about the activities of Chief Abuah without interfacing with the Community Newspaper Journalists and Publishers who are well grounded in Community reportage?
“The assertion that Chief Lucky Abuah had been posing serious security threat to his community and nothing happened to him is a baseless and misleading statement. “The reporter should not usurp the work of the security agents who have nothing incriminating against Chief Lucky Abuah as he does his business as a reputable real Estate mogul and Realtor carrying out his legitimate work of Real Estate in accordance to the law of Nigeria.
We called on the general public and the security agents to disregard the misleading information of Oodua Integrity Group through Liberty TV media, who accused Chief Abuah of orchestrating criminal activities with the aid of rogue police officers and also exploiting government security agents to perpetrate crimes in Ibusa and its environs. It is a known fact that Liberty TV and other media houses was paid to air wrong information about Chief Lucky Abuah just to defame his personality because of his rising popularity among his peers. Chief Abuah is a well known philanthropist who has touched the lives of many homes in Ibusa, Asaba and its environs.
It will also be highly laughable for Oodua Group to say that 10 Mobile Police officers are attached to Chief Abuah. Even the Delta State Police Commissioner do not have such number of police officers attached to him.
The incident being purported on the publication that security agents from an agency in Abuja, acting on intelligence, were prevented from arresting Chief Abuah by his police escorts. This is not true and highly misleading. Besides, the writer would have stated the correct security agency that came from Abuja that acted on intelligence.
Chief Abuah poses no threat to anybody or community because he was recently honoured by the Grassroots Newspaper Publishers Network of Nigeria( GNPN)Delta State Council in a conference held in Asaba for his philanthropy and Community development initiatives over the years. Will Oodua Group tell the Delta story more than Community Newspaper Publishers who reside with the people?
The reason why the Nigerian Police Force are yet to respond to such misleading report is that Chief Abuah is well known to them and would amount to injustice on him if the police act on such negative report on an innocent man.
The Director General, Security in Delta State Hon David Tonwe has affirmed that the rules of engagement remains the hall mark of Operation Delta Sweep in security matters.
Hon Tonwe who was reacting to a video by an online blogger that men of Operation Delta Sweep harassed an innocent Deltan said the author of the video doctored all that transpired.
