NUPENG ADVISES ON PLANS TO SHUT REFINERIES FOR OVERHAUL

                                                                                     PRESS RELEASE

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has advised on the planned shut-down of the nation’s three refineries at the same time for complete overhaul. The Union commends the Buhari administration for the political will to rehabilitate the refineries but warned that it will not tolerate a situation whereby workers jobs are jeopardised.

It believed that the two-unions in the Oil and Gas sector, NUPENG and PENGASSAN with other stakeholders should be taken along in the new arrangement in order to forestall industrial action.

It stated that the union had all along clamoured for the Turn-Around-Maintenance of the nation’s three refineries but advised that it should be done in such a way that the workers jobs are protected.

NUPENG added that the plan closure and TAM should not be used for enriching some cronies because of the astronomical volume of monies that will be involved.  The Union therefore calls for a monitoring committee to oversee all aspects of the overhaul.

The Union warned that it will not tolerate a situation where workers will be used as guinea pigs or eased out under the guise of a complete shut-down of the three refineries.

It stressed that the period should be used to train and re-train the workers to meet the new challenges that will be faced after the overhaul.

It added that the move is a good step in the right direction towards local self sufficiency in petroleum products by 2019, but must be done in a manner that human capital is protected.

Council Election: Gov. Okowa’s trial time

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he upcoming Delta State local government council election may tear the party apart if the leaders of PDP in the state fail to trade with caution. Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa had earlier promised Deltans that this forth coming local government election is not going to be by appointment or selection by leaders as practiced before by PDP, and Deltans believed the Government of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa because he was neither appointed nor imposed on Deltans even when his predecessor Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan refused to support his ambition.
Gov.Okowa told Deltans at one of his campaign rallies that he is the most popular and experienced candidate and that he does not need the anionting of then government of Dr. Uduaghan to be governor of Delta State;all he wanted then was for the PDP authority to conduct a free and fair primaries in the state and his prayer was answered as free and fair primaries was organised and he defeated both government and anointed candidate of then governor. On this note, Deltans expect Gov. Okowa to stage a free and fair primaries in all twenty-five local government areas of the state and shun the evil advice of some political leader who believe in appointment and imposition of candidates because Deltans are wiser now and any attempt to impose or appoint candidate as usual will tear the party apart.

Gov. Okowa

The Grassroots Publishers online learnt from a reliable source that there is a grand conspiracy against the wish of the people by some PDP political leaders; that the incumbent Chairmen and Councillors who are loyal to them and not to Deltans (masses) will be re-elected as they did not make (loot) a lot of money from their various council’s treasury because of recession. Most of these unscrupulous Chairmen and Councillors are now using our amiable governor’s name to deceive the general public saying that the governor and leaders have agreed for their return so as to make more money. The question on the lips of every Deltan is “Are these Chairmen and Councillors interested in service to humanity or looting”? A similar scenario occurred in Ibusa axis of Oshimili North local government area of Delta State when an outgoing Councillor in company of some PDP Ward Excos came to a PDP leader begging and pleading for return as according to the Councillor “I did not achieve my aim of acquiring cars and houses as a Councillor representing my Ward because there was no enough money” and the leader replied the Councillor by asking “Are you there for selfless service to humanity or to acquire cars and houses?”. The Councillor could neither answer the question nor alter a word as he obviously knows their aim of returning to seat is to loot and share the council’s treasury.
For how long will Deltans continue to live in the hands of these selfish and wicked politicians who are only after their personal pockets and not the development of Delta State? Deltans want Gov. Okowa to write his name in gold by giving all party members who are interested in running for any position a free and fair opportunity and not by imposition, writing of names or hand picking as done by previous administrations. It is so unfortunate that most Chairmen cannot declare publicly their monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the past three years. Most of the council’s IGR are not accounted for as they are either diverted to the Chairmen’s personal pockets or their agents. If this happens in Delta LGAs, how can such men and women be re-elected in the name of party loyalty? It is a shame that most of our Chairmen cannot diversify the council’s economy in order to increase IGR rather they all depend on monthly allocation from the state and use the little IGR made from the council to enrich themselves. Deltans need men and women who are ready to rescue the falling councils and not treasury looters who do not have vision or foresight of what grassroots governance is all about.Enough is Enough!

Delta LGA Election: The war cry of marginalization in Oshimili North LGA

—For 20 Years, the North -North Axis are yet to represent the LGA at the State House of Assembly

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]ince the beginning of second republic, Nigerian political scene has been saddles with many intolerance mostly ethnic and tribal intolerance, due to our inherent heterogeneous society and this had further led to the political zoning of offices and positions which originally was planned out to be an arrangement in which political offices are rotated to ensure that no part of any political configuration is short-changed but this particular scenario is not embraced by leaders of Oshimili North L.G.A of Delta State which comprises into two political zones: Ibusa axis and Nort-North axis. Identity in Oshimili North LGA is a complex equation but in other for vested interest to sustain the political war cry of marginalization, they must invoke the crudest, most simplistic and reductionist definitions of Oshimili North-usually in terms of the fabled Ibusa axis and North-North axis dichotomy. The war cry of marginalization requires the persistence of the myth of monolithic Ibusa axis even though the Ibusa axis is more political diverse than the North-North axis. Today, apart from Ibusa axis, people from the North- North claim to be marginalized but what does it really mean to be marginalized.

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa

Summarizing the definitions from a number of dictionaries, the word “marginalize” means to threat someone or something as if he/ she is not important; It also means to keep or keep someone away from centre of action. Finally, it means “to relegate someone or a group of people to a lower edge of a community or society”. The North-North axis has been marginalized politically as it is unbelievable that for the past 20 years, Ibusa axis has taken the House of Assembly as their birthright despite the Memorandum of Understanding, (MoU) signed by the leaders of the local government that there must be a shift of power for both House of Assembly and local government chairmanship positions but the MoU signed many years ago is just a mere theory and document which the Ibusa axis has refused to implement. Since 1999, Dr. (Mrs) Nwaeze represented Oshimili North at the Delta State House of Assembly between 1999 to 2008 (8years) and Hon. Princess Pat Ajudua has been representing since 2008 till date. Does it mean there is no other competent person to represent Oshimili North apart from Ibusa axis? The North –North axis has already forwarded a communiqué to our amiable Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa , stating their stand and also appeal to him to stop this war cry of marginalization by North-North axis of Oshimili North local Government. The North-North axis has reputable political leaders, a leader like Hon. Emeka Madu has lamented about this total marginalization of the North-North zone and they have vowed they to put an end to this political cheating come 2019 at the expiration of Hon. Pat Ajudua’s third term tenure which will make it 20 years the Ibusa axis has been representing Oshimili North since 1999.The North-North axis has totally rejected the position of chairmanship despite the fact that the current chairman, Hon. Louis Ndukwe who has declared his intention for re-election for the forthcoming local government election but based on the recent Oshimili North elders meeting which was held with Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi representing Delta North Senatorial District. At the meeting, majority of the North-North leaders rejected the chairmanship position and stood their ground saying that the North-North axis must represent Oshimili North in Delta State House of Assembly and nothing can stop it. I feel delighted that my people are now waking up from their political slumber by not mortgaging the voice of the entire North-North axis of Oshimili North LGA. We want to call on Hon. Louis Ndukwe to forget contesting for re-election into the chairmanship position but should rather go for House of Assembly which is our rightful turn the North-North axis is not ready to back anybody from the zone contesting for the position of chairmanship as anyone going for such is going on political suicide and does not represent the interest of the zone.  Enough is Enough!

How coconut water boosts fertility —Experts

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t may not be mere coincidence the explosion in popularity of coconut water. Experts have found that taking coconut water during pregnancy can help a woman boosts the fertility of her children, especially now that the level of male fertility globally has declined appreciably. Researchers found that coconut water reverses the after effect of high fat diet many women consume which adversely programme their children to develop a preference for fatty foods and obesity during childhood or adulthood.

Coconut water is made from the clear liquid inside of green coconuts. It’s not to be confused with coconut milk, which is made from the water and the flesh inside a mature coconut. Over 95 per cent of coconut water is water.

In the study, researchers said its fat-lowering (hypolipidemic) effect resulted in significant reductions in weight of pups of pregnant rats that had coconut water with their high fat diet. It also lowered the blood cholesterol level in the pregnant rats.

The study, at the sideline of 2017 iResearch meeting and fair of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (UI), included Olufadekemi Tolulope Kunle-Alabi, Opeyemi Akindele and Yinusa Raji from the university’s Department of Physiology. It was organised by the College of Medicine Research and Innovation Management (CRIM) unit.

According to the researchers, the findings of the study suggest that coconut water is protective against maternal high fat diet-induced changes. The nutritional status during pregnancy has an immense influence on the health of both the mother and her unborn baby. Studies have suggested that obesity and poor nutrition may decrease the fertility of future offspring of a woman.

In fact, a study suggested that excess weight gain and poor nutrition can affect the egg reserves in female offspring, thus putting the daughters at a higher risk for infertility in the future.

They, however, added that further studies are on going to determine the actions of coconut water of maternal high fat-diet induced foetal programming of adult health.

Meanwhile, the Provost, College of Medicine, UI, Professor Olubunmi Olapade-Olaopa, speaking through his deputy, Professor Babafunke Denloye, declared that the iResearch meeting and fair was established to promote the spirit of research and discovery as well as contribute to local and global development through innovations.

He stated that it was to serve as a platform for creating synergy for collaborating research that will enhance knowledge beyond what each investigator can accomplish independently.

UCH’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Temitope Alonge who noted that UCH cannot be dissociated from the College of Medicine, called for increased translational research in the university, saying it was the best way to ensure research findings better impart and inform policies.

Although past ranking had rated the University of Ibadan as first in the whole country, he declared that imbibing translational and interdisciplinary research would further lift the image of the college.

Chairman, CRIM, Professor Sola Ogunniyi said what were showcase were achieved despite the scare resources for research, adding that the exercise was to further encourage fruitfulness in research.

According to him, collaboration is important for better research output, visibility and networking, adding that the era of researchers working in silos is gone.

Meanwhile, previous evidences had suggested that drinking coconut water is beneficial both for the growth of the baby and the pregnant women as well.

Coconut water helps to prevent constipation. It is rich in fibre and helps in the proper movement of the bowels. Constipation is one of the most common problems during pregnancy.

Pregnant women often experience morning sickness, nausea, vomiting. Coconut water provides instant relief to the feeling of uneasiness.

Water consumed in any form prevents the body from urinary tract infection (UTI). Intake of coconut water can help to increase the frequency of urination,  which ultimately reduces the chances of infection. Pregnant women are more prone to UTI. Previously, experts had suggested that coconut water taken to quench thirst could also help to correct irregular menses.  They stated that it possesses s3x hormone-like activity that can help boost fertility because of its effect on the menstrual cycle.

In a preliminary investigation of the effect of coconut water on reproductive functions of female Wistar rats, these group researchers had earlier said that it could enhance the regularisation of irregular menstrual cycle and promotion of the onset of the proestrus phase of the menstrual cycle.

In a 2015 study they published in the journals of the Archives of Basic and Applied Medicine, they indicated that there was a significant reduction in menstrual cycle length in animals treated with coconut water, thus translating to more regular menstrual flow.

Similarly, in 2016, they added that coconut water could improve semen quality and testosterone levels in male rats.

The study, published in Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) journal indicated that males showed a significant increase in sperm count, sperm motility and serum oestrogen concentration when they take coconut milk.

The interception of over 1,500 Deadly arms: 28 Customs officers detained over seized arms

Deadly pump action rifles

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he discovery of another set of deadly 475 pump action rifles, barely one week, after Nigeria Customs Service intercepted a 20-foot container load of 1,100 pump action riffles, last week Monday. The interception of over 1,500 arms of various sizes and designs, the Nigeria Customs Service yesterday arrested and detained 28 officers working at the Tin-Can Island Command of the Service. The agency made good its promise to fish out and prosecute officers involved in the plan to clear a container laden with arms and ammunition. Officers of the command have become jittery as a result of the action of the Customs management as Grassroots Publishers Online gathered that many more officers are likely to be axed as a result of the development. Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) displays the seized 1,100 Jojef Magnum Pump Action and Jojef Magnum Plastic Single Barrels Hunting Gun Pump Action Rifles at Lagos Tin-Can, It was also gathered that the detained officers whose names could not immediately ascertain, have been rounded up and are being interrogated to determine their level of involvement in the botched plan to ferry the container of arms out of the port undetected. Sources close to the command told us that the officers and their civilian collaborators would soon appear in court but not until the Service has carried out a detailed and thorough investigation on the matter.
It was gathered that some of the 28 officers might be left off the hook, if the ongoing investigation does not find them culpable as some of them might only be involved in the documentation but not privy to the content of the container. It would be recalled that some operatives of the Intelligence Unit of the Service on routine duty on September 6, 2017, became suspicious of a 20ft container which was not initially listed for examination but had through questionable means been positioned with other containers for the day’s examination. They also discovered that the seal of the container had been cut and padlocked. The suspicious movement of the container made them order that it be transferred immediately to the Enforcement Unit where it was examined and pump action rifles found in it.

PMB Seeks Collaborative Efforts In Combating Terrorism

President Buhari

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Muhammadu Buhari  implored world leaders to sustain collaborative efforts in the war against terrorism at the international level. The Nigerian leader who said this while delivering Nigeria’s national statement during the general debate of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) also assured the international community of Nigeria’s firm and unshaken commitment to democracy in the country and the African continent.”

Calling for collaborative efforts in tackling global terrorism, Buhari noted that this will require sturdy cooperation between the UN and regional bodies. He said, “We must collectively devise strategies and mobilise the required responses to stop fleeing ISIS fighters from mutating and infiltrating into the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, where there are insufficient resources and response capacity is weak.

“This will require strong UN cooperation with regional organisations, such as the African Union, in conflict prevention and management. The UN should continue to take primary leadership of the maintenance of international peace and security by providing, in a predictable and sustainable manner, adequate funding and other enablers to regional initiatives and peacekeeping operations authorized by the Security Council.”

The Nigerian president described the choice of the theme for UNGA 72, ‘Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet’, as timely and appropriate. He drew global attention to issues and crises which impact negatively on the people, saying the most vulnerable are children and women, just as he urged concerted international solutions.

His words: “The international community cannot remain silent and not condemn the horrendous suffering caused by what, from all indications, is a state-backed programme of brutal depopulation of the Rohingya inhabited areas in Myanmar on the bases of ethnicity and religion.“We fully endorse the call by the Secretary-General on the Government of Myanmar to order a halt to the ongoing ethnic cleansing and ensure the safe return of the displaced Rohingya to their homes in safety and dignity.”

President Buhari who also stated Nigeria’s position on the current threat to global peace and security posed by North Korea’s nuclear programme, urged the global body to take decisive action on Korean peninsula crisis. He said, “The most pressing threat to international peace and security today is the accelerated nuclear weapons development programme by North Korea. Since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, we have never come so close to the threat of nuclear war as we have now.

“All necessary pressure and diplomatic efforts must be brought to bear on North Korea to accept peaceful resolution of the crisis. As Hiroshima and Nagasaki painfully remind us, if we fail, the catastrophic and devastating human loss and environmental degradation cannot be imagined. “Nigeria proposes a strong UN delegation to urgently engage the North Korean Leader. The delegation, led by the Security Council, should include members from all the regions.

“The crisis in the Korean peninsula underscores the urgency for all member states, guided by the spirit of enthroning a safer and more peaceful world, to ratify without delay the Treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons, which will be open for signature here tomorrow.”

He also underscored Nigeria’s readiness to cooperate in addressing the growing transnational crimes such as forced labour, modern day slavery, human trafficking and cybercrime.

“New conflicts should not make us lose focus on ongoing unresolved old conflicts. For example, several UN Security Council Resolutions from 1967 on the Middle East crisis remain unimplemented. Meanwhile, the suffering of the Palestinian people and the blockade of Gaza continue”, he cautioned.

Buhari assured the international community of Nigeria’s firm and unshaken commitment to democracy in the country and the African continent. He said this commitment to democratic ideals became profound with Nigeria leading ECOWAS’ effort in the restoration of democratic governance in The Gambia and Cote D’Ivoire.

He stated: “Our faith in democracy remains firm and unshaken. Our regional organisation, ECOWAS, came together to uphold democratic principles in The Gambia – as we had done previously in Cote D’Ivoire. “The frontiers of good governance, democracy including holding free and fair elections, and enthronement of the rule of law are expanding everywhere, especially in Africa.

“Through our individual national efforts, state institutions are being strengthened to promote accountability, and to combat corruption and asset recovery. These can only be .achieved through the international community cooperating and providing critical assistance and material support” The president commended the UN, Germany, Italy, Greece and Turkey for assisting victims of conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the international community for its exemplary show of solidarity in assisting “the countries and communities in the Sahel and the Lake Chad regions to contain the threats posed by Al Qaida and Boko Haram.

“We thank the Security Council for visiting the countries of the Lake Chad Basin to assess the security situation and humanitarian needs, and for pledging assistance to rebuild lives and livelihood”, he added.

He said Nigeria is currently “providing relief and humanitarian assistance to millions in internally displaced camps and those afflicted by terrorism, drought, floods and other natural disasters.”
