Tinubu To End The Long-decades Of South East Marginalization- Soludo Declares

The Anambra State Government says President Bola Tinubu is set to end infrastructural and economic marginalization of the South-East region.

The State Government said this in a statement issued by Commissioner for Information Law Mefor, to express gratitude to Tinubu “for his historic State Visit to Anambra, on May 8, 2025.”

The statement said: “The visit marks a significant turning point in the quest for inclusive national development. It signals the beginning of the end of decades of infrastructural and economic marginalization of the South-East region.

The government and people of Anambra State are deeply gratified that Mr President, in response to the visionary leadership and engagement efforts of their governor,

Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, graciously approved key requests that were part of Anambra’s strategic ask-list. “The approved items by Mr President include:

1. Inclusion of Anambra State and the South-East in the National Railway Masterplan, a bold step that promises to open new corridors of mobility, trade, and interconnectivity for the South-East and the rest of the federation.

2. Inclusion of Anambra and the Southeast in the nation’s Gas Pipeline Masterplan – A critical enabler of industrialisation and energy access, which will support the state’s growing manufacturing and technology sectors.

3. Approval for the completion of the Federal highway linking Anambra and Kogi State.

This transformational project will reduce travel time to Abuja from Anambra by about four hours, fostering trade, mobility, and national unity.

4. Commencement of reconstruction works on the failed portions of the Enugu/ Onitsha Expressway, the long-standing infrastructural challenge is now finally receiving the federal government’s attention under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

5. Mr President pledged federal support for ecological investments to tackle erosion in Anambra State. This intervention is apposite, knowing that environmental problems of this nature remain Anambra’s number one existential threat.

6. We also appreciate Mr. President’s acceptance to be conferred with the chieftaincy title of “Dike-Si-Mba Anambra” by the traditional rulers in the state. This symbolic title is a testament to his large-heartedness and recognition of his contributions to national development and unity, and his friendship with the state.

7. Mr President acknowledged the huge potential of Anambra State and pledged to work together with Prof. Soludo to fast-track his vision of transforming Anambra into an African Dubai, Taiwan, Silicon Valley (ADTS) in his acknowledgement of Professor Soludo as a Solution Provider and demonstration of Progressives Working Together.

8. The other critical request made by Governor Soludo was for the federal government to get Onitsha River Port working.

9. We are deeply grateful to Mr President for pledging the Federal Government’s continued partnership with Anambra State and the South-East for total restoration of security.”

Adding, the statement said Tinubu’s visit was a victory for justice, inclusivity, and visionary leadership. “This bold response by the president is a deserving show of friendship, a friendship that transcends politics and is rooted in the shared aspiration for a more united, progressive Nigeria and evidence of progressives working together,”

it said. The state government reaffirmed its “commitment to working collaboratively with the Federal Government to ensure the successful execution of these projects” and expressed the confidence “that these landmark approvals will translate into tangible improvements in the lives and livelihoods of our state and its people

Defection: Oborevwori Desire is Not to Kill PDP – Delta Govt

Hon. Charles Aniagwu,Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information has said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress APC, was not intended to kill the People’s Democratic Party PDP but to sustain development of the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Asaba on Thursday, Aniagwu, flanked by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, said the administration has left “bold and remarkable footprints” across the state, particularly in rural infrastructure and public service delivery noting that the interest of Delta is Oborevwori’s goal.

“In almost two years, we can see very bold and remarkable achievements by Governor Oborevwori and his team. We have provided roads in various communities, reducing travel time from Asaba to Ughelli to just one hour and forty-five minutes,” Aniagwu said.

He also noted that development projects have reached many previously underserved coastal communities.

“We were at Ode-Itsekiri, where the Trans-Warri bridges and access roads to creek communities are progressing well.

“We have also revived work on the Ayakoromo Bridge in Burutu Local Government Area, which will help connect several coastal communities to the upland,” he added.

As part of preparations to mark the administration’s second anniversary, Aniagwu announced that several projects have been lined up for inauguration. However, due to the volume of completed projects, the Governor may not be able to commission all of them personally.

“Some of the key projects include the Beneku Bridge, Ishiagu-Ewulu Road and Bridge, Upper and Lower Erejuwa Roads in Warri, erosion control in Okpanam, Olomoro-Igbide Road, Otolokpo to Boji-Boji Owa, Akumazi-Owere-Olubor Road, and Obi-Ibabu Road, among others.

“We have also installed medical equipment at Asaba Specialist Hospital, Warri Central Hospital, and Delta State University Teaching Hospital in Oghara, all aimed at improving healthcare delivery and reducing medical tourism,” he said.

Aniagwu emphasized that some projects may be opened for public use without formal commissioning. “There are just too many. In some cases, members of the State Executive Council will be delegated to handle inaugurations,” he explained.

The commissioner reiterated Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to the overall development of the state, saying governance will not take a back seat even as political activities increase.

“Governor Oborevwori has instructed all cabinet members and agency heads to remain focused. Governance will not be sidelined. For every project executed, payment is made promptly after certification, showcasing our prudent approach to resource management,” Aniagwu assured.

He dismissed concerns from critics, stating, “Anyone suggesting that the administration is losing grip is far from the truth. The Governor remains committed to delivering results.”

On job creation, Aniagwu said the administration has empowered over 250,000 Deltans through various programmes coordinated by inter-ministerial departments and agencies, including the D-CARES grant initiative.

Addressing security, he noted that the state government has taken proactive steps to combat insecurity. “The Inspector General of Police was in the state recently to commission operational vehicles. We have also improved street lighting across urban centres,” he added.

On rising house rents in Asaba and other parts of the state, Aniagwu said the government is expanding livable spaces through a housing scheme that includes the construction of 50 residential units in each local government area. The pilot phase in Ozoro, Owa-Oyibu, and Kwale features 30 three-bedroom flats and 20 two-bedroom flats.

He concluded by affirming that the administration will continue to operate with transparency, efficiency, and a people-centered focus, ensuring sustained progress across Delta State.

Revealed: How Hotel Manager killed a female PoS operator over N10,000 dispute, uses her phone to contact her father for ransom

By: our Reporter

Crack detectives investigating the death of a Lagos-based Pastor, Sunday Ogofotha, who was found dead at Century Home Hotel, Owehlogbo, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State,  Nigeria, have made a great breakthrough.

Recall that both the hotel owner, Joseph Ogbole, the Manager of the hotel, Godwin Iboirode alongside two workers were arrested sometime in March over the death of a Lagos-based pastor, Sunday Ogofotha, who was found dead in the hotel after he had lodged there to attend the burial of a relative.

Giving an update over the incident the Delta State Police Command’s Spokesman Bright Edafe,  on Tuesday  via X-Page stated that the Manager of the hotel, Godwin Iboirode made useful confession during interrogation.

According to Edafe, “When the wife of the pastor (Ogofotha) could not reach him the next day, she called his family members to inform them that her husband expressly told her that he lodged at that very hotel.

“The family visited the hotel, but the hotel management denied that Ogofotha had lodged in the hotel. This prompted them to report to the police.

“Upon investigation by the police, it was discovered that the pastor was allegedly killed and buried in the hotel.

“The pastor had travelled from Lagos to Delta but arrived the city late and decided to lodge at the Century Home Hotel before proceeding on his journey the next day”.

“During the investigation”, he continued, “we recovered a PoS machine from the hotel manager, and he claimed that it was a lady who came and forgot the machine.

“After the investigation, the lady who went missing in December 2024 had a business transaction with the hotel manager in the sum of N10,000, which the lady claimed he transferred to her, but she did not receive the money.

“That was how their quarrel started, and according to the manager, the lady was defaming him in the community, and he swore to deal with her. The lady went to him to demand her money, but he dragged her to the back of the hotel and strangled her to death”.

During interrogation, Iboirode narrated that he was angered by the decision of Bethel to accuse him of scamming her because she did not receive the money he had transferred to her adding that when the girl (Bethel)  came to demand her money, he dragged her to the back of the hotel and strangled her to death, left her body there, and used her phone to demand a ransom from her father as well as the family of the slain pastor.

His confession:

“My name is Godwin Iboirode. What brought us together is about a N10,000 transaction.
She went around to spoil my name, that I scammed her, and that was what angered me. I carried the girl into the bush. I strangled her and left her body there. I am the only one who killed her. After I killed her, I used her phone to text her father to demand ransom,” Iboirode said in Pidgin (translated).

Delta State Remains One of the Safest in Nigeria — DG Security, David Tonwe Assures

The Director General of Security in Delta State, Hon. David Tonwe, has cleared the air regarding growing concerns about insecurity within the state. Tonwe, while addressing recent narratives being peddled against the state government, emphasized that the administration of Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori is fully committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across all parts of Delta State.

According to Tonwe, many of those raising alarm about insecurity are, in fact, the very elements responsible for creating tension and disturbances within the state. He described their actions as deliberate attempts to undermine the efforts of the state government and its security operatives, painting a false picture of lawlessness for selfish interests.

Speaking to Press Men Tonwe reiterated that Delta State remains one of the safest places in the country. “Listen to me, Delta is safe,” he affirmed. “The Nigeria Police Force, the Army, and other security agencies are working round the clock to maintain peace and order. We will not allow a handful of individuals to destabilize our state.”

Tonwe also reminded the public that no nation, let alone a state, is completely free from security challenges. He drew comparisons with more developed nations like the United States, where incidents of insecurity still persist despite their advanced resources and infrastructure. He argued that Delta State is faring well given its diverse population and the numerous vested interests at play.

He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering dedication to both development and security matters in the state. Tonwe highlighted several proactive measures and strategic security operations being implemented to combat crime and protect residents. According to him, the governor’s leadership has brought relative peace and progressive transformation to Delta State.

In a firm warning, Tonwe urged those fueling insecurity to desist from such actions or be prepared to face the full wrath of the law. He stated unequivocally that the government will no longer tolerate any attempts to disrupt the peace and stability currently enjoyed in the state. “We are determined to identify and bring all perpetrators to justice,” he said.

In conclusion, the DG called on the good people of Delta State to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operatives. He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities and assured them of the government’s readiness to swiftly respond to any threats. “Together, we will continue to keep Delta safe,”

Latest NewsAPC Fires Back: PDP’s Collapse Is Self-Inflicted – Morka Blasts Opposition Party

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, has refuted claims suggesting that the ruling party is responsible for the internal crisis currently plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, alongside former PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, Morka criticized the assertion that recent defections from the opposition to the APC were driven by threats or witch-hunts from the ruling party.

Morka argued that it is misplaced for the PDP to blame the APC for its internal challenges, especially when the opposition party is struggling to fill key leadership positions such as its national chairman and secretary.

He questioned the PDP’s capacity to govern, stating:

“I doubt my brother (Ologbondiyan) genuinely believes what he said, because it’s unreasonable to blame the APC for the total dysfunction and stagnation within the PDP’s internal structure.”

In response, Ologbondiyan insisted that the defection of some opposition leaders to the APC would not shield the ruling party from public accountability, especially ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said:

“At the end of the day, it’s Nigerians who will decide. You might gather all 36 governors into one boardroom and have them declare for you, but have you moved the over 200 million Nigerians into that same room? The answer is no.”

Why Delta ranks highest in oil production — Aniagwu

The Delta State Government has said it has consistently taken strategic steps over the years to boost national revenue by ensuring peace and development in oil-producing communities across the state.

The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, stated this during an interview on Channels TV Politics.

Aniagwu, responding to comments made by a Delta APC stalwart, Collins Eselemo, emphasized that Delta State could not have emerged as the country’s highest oil-producing state without investing in the peace and development of its oil-producing communities.

According to Hon. Charles Aniagwu , “Governor Oborevwori has brought significant development to our state”.

“Former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa did not commission the Ogulaha-Okonti-Odimodi Road, as claimed. However, Okowa did construct and inaugurate the 20.29km Obotobo I, Obotobo II, Sokebulou, and Yokiri roads in Ogulagha, Burutu Local Government Area.

“Eselemo fails to understand that the people living in the creeks have homes there. They own vehicles and need accessible roads. One of the key reasons we have not experienced significant pipeline vandalism in Delta is because we extended development to the creeks, where most of the oil is extracted.

“Previously, they would tell the people that development was only on paper, confined to pipeline areas. But instead of keeping development in the pipeline, the Delta State Government starting with the Okowa administration and now deepened by Governor Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori took development directly to the people.

“Eselemo questions the economic importance of developing the creeks, but that is precisely why Delta is a leading oil-producing state because our brothers and sisters in the creeks have been empowered and included.

“He is asking why we develop those areas. It’s a shameful question. Imagine how shallow his reasoning is, especially coming from someone who is himself from the creeks.”

The Commissioner also mentioned that Governor Oborevwori’s leadership facilitated the defection of former PDP members in the state to the APC in order to drive further development.

“We joined the APC with the intention of broadening the spectrum of development in Delta. We have extended a hand of partnership to our brothers and sisters we met in the APC. Naturally, not everyone will be on the same page from day one, but with time, full integration will happen.

“Talking about developments in Eselemo’s local government area, we have completed all road projects in Burutu Town. The Ayakoromo Bridge is under construction, and work is ongoing on the Ogulaha-Okonti-Odimodi Road.

“We are also building the 47-kilometer Ohoror-Bomadi road, and Eselemo is fully aware of this. If he wants to talk about development, I am more than willing to engage him.”

Responding to Eselemo’s claim that the Julius Berger bridges in Effurun and Warri are within a 400-meter stretch, Aniagwu dismissed the allegation as false and misleading.

“He claimed that the bridges being constructed in Effurun and Warri are only 400 meters apart. That’s not true. One of the bridges alone exceeds 400 meters in length and we are building three.

“Let him tell you whether the Enerhen Junction is just 400 meters from the DSC Roundabout. Let him say if PTI Junction is just 400 meters from Enerhen Junction, or from the DSC Roundabout. Clearly, he is not telling the truth.

“And it’s not just bridges we are building, we are also expanding the corridor. Everyone who travels through that corridor has commended Governor Oborevwori for his commitment to infrastructure.

“So I want to know what exactly my brother Collins is unhappy about. Is it our move to the APC or the state’s infrastructural progress? That needs to be clarified.

“Collins used to be more coherent in his arguments than what I witnessed tonight. Responding to the issues he raised is difficult because even he doesn’t seem to know what exactly his problem is with our move to the APC.”

On allegations that the state owes over N400 billion, Aniagwu debunked the claim, describing it as false and completely detached from reality.

“No one is owing N400 billion. Since Governor Oborevwori assumed office, he has not borrowed a single dime.

“In fact, he has repaid over N280 billion in loans and contractual obligations, many of which were inherited from the previous administration and tied to bridging finance.

“So I really don’t understand where Eselemo stands. He is moving from one argument to another without any consistency or clarity.

“I thought he wanted to discuss our defection to the APC. But instead, he started attacking even the APC’s spokesperson, which left me puzzled about what interests or tendencies he represents.

“Perhaps he thought he would come here, spread falsehoods, paint distorted pictures, and go unchecked. But that won’t happen.

“Beyond that, I want to emphasize that we are making tangible progress in Delta and we are moving forward.

“You heard the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. He acknowledged that everyone has come together. The APC leaders we met have all welcomed the move.

“So I really need to understand the angle my brother Collins Eselemo is coming from. It’s obvious he is disorganized in his arguments tonight, and that is quite unfortunate.

“I hope, after this interview, he reflects on his position. Right now, he is jumping from one point to another without addressing the very issues he raised.

HABEMUS PAPAM: Leo XIV, the First American-Peruvian Pope with Black Heritage

Pope Leo XIV signalled where his papacy was headed during his inaugural speech last Thursday, when he said, “We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, dialogue, always open to receive, like this square with open arms, everyone who needs our charity, our presence, dialogue and love.”

Born on September 14, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, as Robert Francis Prevost, the new pope’s maternal grandparents are Blacks, according to verified historical records.

Jari C. Honora of the Historical New Orleans Collection, HNOC, in the United States, disclosed last Thursday that the new, first American Pope has African-American roots dating back to slavery days.

He said the pontiff’s maternal grandparents are Creoles of colour from the Seventh Ward, and area, “that is traditionally Catholic and a melting pot of people with African, Carribean and European routes”.

According to the records, his grandparents, Joseph Martinez and Louis Baquie, in the end, moved to Chicago in the early 20th century and had a daughter, Mildred Martinez, the pope’s mother.

“This discovery is just an additional reminder of how interwoven we are as Americans,” Mr. Honora said in a text message to the NYT, late Thursday. “I hope that it will highlight the long history of Black Catholics, both free and enslaved, in this country, which includes the Holy Father’s family.”

Moreover, Pope Leo XIV holds a dual citizenship- Peruvian-American-having naturalized as a Peruvian citizen in 2015.

He attended Villanova University and obtained a B.Sc. in Mathematics in 1977, then proceeded to Catholic Theology Union in Chicago where he obtained a Master of Divinity in 1982 and then a Licentiate & Doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical College of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome between 1984 and 1987.

He took his first vows in 1978, his solemn vows in 1981, followed by Ordination on June 19, 1982. He then undertook a missionary and educator task as parish pastor, seminary sector and canon law teacher in Peru, South America between 1985 and 1998.

He soon became the Prior General of the Order of St. Augustine (2001–2013).

Thenceforth, his rise in office gained momentum as Pope Francis serially appointed him to various positions within the church until his election as Pope last Thursday, May 8, 2025.

METEORIC RISE FROM BISHOP TO POPE IN TEN YEARS

What perhaps sets Leo XIV apart from his predecessors in recent history, is that it took him 10 years from his confirmation as Bishop to become Pope. Even more revealing is that he was elevated to Cardinal just two years ago.

In order and sequence, Rev. Father Robert Prevost was appointed by his predecessor, Pope Francis as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru in 2014, followed by an appointment as a Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015. Four years later, in 2019, Bishop Prevost was elevated as member of the Vatican Dicastery for the Clergy. The Dicastery of the Clergy deals with all priests and deacons of the diocesan clergy in terms of their persons and pastoral work.

Having performed this task satisfactorily, he was again elevated the following year 2020 as member of the Vatican Dicastery for Bishops. The persons and pastoral work of Bishops now fell under his purview. Additional responsibility was added to his position, having been made apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Callao in Peru in that same year.

In 2021, Pope Francis had a private audience with Bishop Prevost in Rome, sparking speculation about a new role in the papacy.

Year 2023 came with a flood of appointments, perhaps the only hint at a possibility of a shot at the papacy: Bishop Prevost was called from Peru to Rome and appointed as Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Bishops, where he oversaw the evaluation and recommendation of episcopal candidates worldwide: Bishop Prevost is appointed as President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

Then came the ultimate elevation when Bishop Prevost was made a Cardinal, followed with a further appointment as Member of Seven Vatican Dicasteries: Doctrine of the Faith; Evangelization; Eastern Churches; the Clergy; Institute of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life; Culture and Education; and Legislative Texts.

There was more to follow in that same year when Cardinal Prevost became a member of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State.

Then before he took ill and died, Pope Francis again promoted Cardinal Prevost, in 2025, from the rank of Cardinal Deacon to Cardinal Bishop, and assigned the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano.

On May 8, Cardinal Prevost was elected 267th Pope, elected by 133 Cardinals. His election is seen as a divine intervention.

“The election of a Pope has some mystery surrounding it. That is why we say in the Catholic Church that those who go into the conclave come out Cardinals because many who the world ordinarily would think would emerge as Pope, come out as Cardinal, while those never considered become Pope,” Rev. Fr Hyginus Aghaulor,” until recently, the Director of Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Nnewi, told THEWILL on Friday. He added that, “Cardinals go into conclave where they are locked up to make sure they are not influenced in any way. They have no phone, but only prayers. Nobody mentioned Pope Leo as a major contender.”

Fr. Okhueleigbe Osemhantie Amos said even the most experienced cardinals—despite years of theological formation, pastoral leadership and curial insight—enter the conclave as participants in a sacred mystery that exceeds knowledge. Peter’s successor. Here are intriguing things even cardinals may not fully know as they enter the conclave.

“Some cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel believing they are electors only to discover they are the elected. Several Popes in history, including John Paul I and Francis, were not leading candidates prior to the conclave,” he said in a piece.

He noted that though secluded, the conclave’s outcome affects over a billion Catholics and reverberates across the world stage.

For him, many of the Cardinals may be taking part in the last conclave of their lives and a chance in a lifetime to participate in the election of a Pope. Their decision will outlive them and shape the future of the Church beyond their lifetime.

“Some enter with an idea, but leave with awe: Cardinals may walk in thinking about reform, governance or balance. But the gravity of history, tradition and the Divine Will overwhelms all personal agendas once the ballots begin.

“They may unknowingly elect a saint as history has proven that conclaves sometimes elect not a manager or diplomat, but a saint—like Pope Pius X or John Paul II—whose hidden holiness becomes radiant through their papacy.”

MORE ABOUT LEO XIV

As an Augustinian, – from the Order of Saint Augustine which was established in 1244 and named after Bishop Augustine of Hippo in North Africa in the 4th Century B.C-, Pope Leo VIX is expected to pursue and perpetuate the spiritual ideals and teaching of the Order, among other demands of his office.

“The main focus for Augustinians is on getting a community together and sharing our lives, our goods, our work,” Rev. Allan Fitzgerald, an Augustinian priest, Villanova University professor in the United States and the editor of an encyclopedia of Saint Augustine, told The New York Times on May 8, 2025.

“The most important part of what Pope Leo is talking about is bridging gaps — getting people back together and away from all the anger, the infighting,” Fitzgerald said, and “the nonsense that goes on around minor details when our humanity is something we hold in common.”

Getting people back together and away from all the infighting hold a special ring for Africans where many emergent countries are still grappling with the basic necessities of life.

Nigerian Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of Sokoto, who was in Rome for the event, as part of the Federal Government delegation led by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, said, “St Augustine, an African, is considered one of the Church’s greatest scholars. So, taken together, we see the possibility of a continuation of the social engagement started by Pope Francis. Rerum Novarum attacked the injustices that ravaged workers and the inhumanity of capitalist exploitation in the late 20th century.”

Bishop Kukah therefore foresees the possibility of the Pope bringing his moral authority to help shape things in Africa and “effectively change the faces of injustice and corruption that is producing so much violence and destroying our continent.

He urged that the “Catholic Church must urgently reposition itself and face the challenge of engaging the structures of injustice in our continent.”

He said Pope Leo XIV was very emphatic about his views in his speech, noting that the choice of Leo XIV as the name of the new pope bears a special significance.

“Pope Leo XIII was famous for his epic encyclical, Rerum Novarum in 1891,” Bishop Kukah said, adding, “It would be right to assume that taking the name, Leo XIV should signal where he wishes to go,”  According to Bishop Kukah, Pope Leo XIV “combines a trinity of identities: American, Peruvian and then Augustinian.”

IDENTITIES, CONNECTIONS AS PLATFORM

From the USA, the third largest population in the world at 347, 276,000 after India at 1,463, 870,000 and China at 1,416, 400; head of arguably the oldest Church with 1.4 billion members, alongside the Eastern Orthodox Church and an Augustinian whose patron saint, Bishop Augustine of Hippo is recognised as a Saint in the Protestant Churches and the Eastern Orthodox churches to an extent, Pope Leo XIV, many believe, has a solid platform for deploying his moral authority globally.

In a world where war and conflict between Hamas and Israel, Russia and Ukraine, Houthi rebels in Yemen, Myanmar conflict, human trafficking, racism, Illicit drug trade, corruption, poverty and human rights violations threaten global peace, the Pope’s vision on bridge-building, dialogue and love, could become provide a soothing balm if the principles pursued to their logical conclusion.

According to Father Aghaulor, Pope Leo XIV’s background shows he has a deep compassion for people, which puts him in a better position to offer moral authority that support initiatives and interventions against much suffering and pains currently ongoing around the world.

Father Aghaulor said, “From the much I know of the background of the Pope, having spent most part of his life in rural areas in South America that are poor, I would say he knows what poverty is. Secondly, as prio-general of the Augustinian Order found in 54 countries worldwide, he travelled widely and can feel the pulse of people of the world. He is somebody who would continue in the trajectory of Pope Francis who had compassion for the poor and understood the cries of those suffering.”

In 2016, Pope Leo XIV visited Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital City as part of his duties as the Augustinian pro-general and engaged with members of the order as well as the larger Catholic community.

Moral diplomacy and consistent stand against all forms of injustice on his part can help to shine the light in dark places opposed to life and human dignity, promote transparency in governance and business and encourage inclusiveness at the grassroots, many priests contend.

“To all of you, brothers and sisters of Rome, of Italy, of the whole world, we want to be a synodal Church, a Church that walks, a Church that always seeks peace, that always seeks charity, that always seeks to be close, especially to those who suffer,” Pope Leo XIV said in his first address.

“With roots in North America, citizenship in South America and experience in the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV brings a truly global outlook to the papacy,” wrote, The Nation Newspaper, on Thursday.

“You too help us, then each other, to build bridges, with dialogue, with encounter, to be one people always at peace,” Pope Leo XIV, threw a challenge to everyone in his maiden address.
