ACNPN confers award on Chief Ayiri

The Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, Delta State Council yesterday confer a merit award on Chief Ayiri Emami, “The Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom. The honour, according to the ACNPN state Chairman, Comr. Jude Obiemenyego, is in recognition of Ologbotsere’s contributions to the prevailing peace in the Niger Delta and the Protector of (Itsekiri) Tradition in Delta and Nigeria.

The ACNPN state Chairman, stated this known during a visit to Ayiri at his palatial home in Egbokodo, Warri, on Monday, October 14, 2024.

Famous politician and businessman, Chief Ayiri Emami, has revealed to Community Publishers how he turned down lot of awards for many years, because he didn’t want undeserving recognition, but had to accept honour by the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, Delta State Council, when he was informed that the award had to do with tradition.

Chief Emami, made the disclosure Monday night, at his palatial home in Egbokodo, Warri, when the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, bestowed the award of “Prime Promoter/Protector of Itsekiri Traditional Heritage” on him.

Whilst stating: “The Ologbotsere, represents the Omajaja and 80% of us sitting here are Omajaja. I am the Head of the Omajaja, which makes me the Ologbotsere”, Chief Emami, remarked: “I don’t think I am the only Deltan that deserves this. I have turned down a lot of awards for many years now.

But when I was informed by one of your colleagues and he said that it has to do with tradition, saying, I am one of those promoting and protecting the culture and tradition of our people, I accepted to receive the award, especially because the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, has ‘Grass-roots people, which is my constituency.

“I know a lot of traditional rulers are clamouring that they should be given constitutional roles, some of us welcome that idea. If you are talking about traditional rulers, they are the closest to the community and to the grassroots. If a traditional ruler is honest, the community will be blessed. In every tradition and community, they have a way of installing their traditional ruler. If you wake up today as a traditional ruler and support Illegality in your domain or a publisher begin to publish what is not right in his locality, that means such person is trying to destroy the community.

“As at today, if I have the opportunity to speak to any traditional ruler, you must keep your institution the way your forefathers left it. You do not allow money to influence our traditional institution, because before government, the traditional institution existed. They were the ones directing and dealing with the locals and dealing with the White men, even when we now have establishment of the government in place, is the same traditional rulers, that is the first point of call, but if you decide to do the other way round, that means your kingdom and your community, will be destroyed.

“I am of the philosophy that you do not modernize it, and that’s why when it comes to tradition, I will do the right thing and I don’t mix it with modernity. As individual, you will come and go, but the institution remains, so do not try to mess with the institution, but ensure to stand for the institution. There’s no short cut, you do not bend it. In every institution in a state, there are lay down procedures and when you encourage wrong things, wrong things will come to your doorstep.

“I am not going to take this honour for granted, it is for me to do more. I dedicate this award to the Almighty God, our good ancestors and all the descendants of the Ologbotsere dynasty.”

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, ACNPN, Delta State Council, Comr. Jude Obiemenyego, stated: “The Association recognise you on what you have done in the area of tradition, as the Promoter and Protector of (Itsekiri) Tradition in Delta and Nigeria. You have done well. We also plead with you to continue in your traditional settings, to make sure that traditional institution has a place in Nigeria and the world.

“We celebrate you (Chief Ayirimi Emami) for being a man. Outside tradition, you have done well in the area of youth empowerment in the state and beyond, a lot of people have benefitted from your philanthropist gesture. I do not have much to say, but with these few words of mine, I pray that you will continue to partner with the media.”

Chief Mike Odeli, Engr. Tuoyo Omatsuli, Barr. Richard Omare, Mr. Austin Oribioye, Mr. Canaan Ajagbawa and Mr. Alex Eyengho, were among prominent members of Ologbotsere descendants and political bigwigs present during the award ceremony.

Sachet water ban will lead to job losses – Lagos residents

Some residents of Lagos State have expressed concerns over the proposed move by the state government to ban single-use plastics (SUPs) and sachet water, saying that it will lead to loss of jobs and disrupt economic activities.

The residents, in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, appealed to the state government to rethink the proposed ban.

Recall that Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, during a stakeholders’ workshop, recently announced plans to ban SUPs and sachet water by January 2025.

Wahab said the policy is designed to establish sustainable guidelines for managing plastic waste while protecting public health and the environment.

He noted that styrofoam and single-use plastics take centuries to degrade, making the ban essential for environmental protection.

Wahab said the Lagos State Government was working closely with private sector organizations to provide alternatives for styrofoam containers and other SUPs while supporting research into new technological solutions.

The proposed ban has sent shockwaves through the manufacturing and retail sectors, sparking fears of job losses, economic disruption, and uncertainty among stakeholders.

The ban has also raised concerns among water vendors who rely heavily on sachet water for their livelihood.

A Lagos resident and Sales Manager at Aremson Water Ltd., Ojo First Gate, Mr. Akinyemi Bolaji, told NAN that the ban would make a lot of people unemployed.

“I am more particular about employment. The ban will not favor anyone, and it will make thousands of people lose their source of livelihood.

“On the other hand, what is the reason for the ban? People are consuming it daily, so is there any way the government is putting it out to give people clean water?

“There should be other alternatives to curb the whole recycling issue,” he said.

While commending the government for the initiative, he, however, appealed for a better alternative to ensure the ban won’t affect the jobs of people in the water business.

“The government should help in educating the people on proper disposal, as it’s written on the body of the plastic.

“Eradicating all these factories that produce the SUPs is not the best way. It’s a solution in one aspect and hazardous in another,” he said.

He advised the government to place a bin at every bus stop and house to curb the problem of single-use plastics blocking the drainage.

A retail water seller, Mrs. Vera Osiyemi, said that sachet water had been the best way of curbing cholera.

“I don’t think it is going to be possible. This is what everyone consumes. If the government bans it, does it mean we are going back to our old way of selling iced water?”

“The solution is to create awareness, educate the people on how to dispose of it properly, and provide bins. Just like we had in the old days, it was in every house,” Osiyemi said.

Another seller, Mrs. Afusat Ajibola, said that the ban might not be possible because the main idea was to get clean water.

“So, if the government eventually bans it, it will result in a serious cholera outbreak.

“It is not possible. The government can ban it, but it cannot work. There is no way we are going back to selling iced water,” she said.

She added that the government might have a way of controlling those who consume it.

“It is to provide bins and continue to keep Lagos clean,” she said.

Another retailer, Miss Joy Okafor, said she was not aware of the proposed ban.

“Even if there would be a ban, we should understand that it’s not just the single-use and sachet nylon water that block the drainage.

“There are other causes, like disposables, as well.

“The government knows what is best, but in this case, it is not possible. Will they provide clean pipe-borne water for streets and houses?

“What will be the next step of the government? The only thing I’m seeing is more unemployment, because people sell it to make ends meet,” she said.

She said the government should look for a means to curb the problem at disposal and not banning it.

Mr. Chinedu Eze, a water distributor, said he was uncertain about what would happen next after the ban.

“I have been in the business for years. Now, I’m uncertain about the future. This isn’t just about access to water; it’s about the survival of thousands of us,” he said.

Another Lagos resident, simply identified as Mummy Boma, a street vendor, told NAN that the proposed ban would affect her livelihood.

“Selling pure water helps me feed my children and send them to school. Bottled water is too expensive to buy or sell in bulk.

“The government should rather enforce stricter regulations on sachet water producers to ensure better quality control and hygiene standards,” she said.

A resident and medical doctor, Dr. Olufemi Adeyemi, opined that Lagosians could lose access to potable and affordable water due to the ban.

“Though some sachet water contains contaminated water due to lack of regulation, the government needs to provide alternative safe water sources before any ban is enforced.

“Without proper preparation, banning ‘pure water’ could leave millions of Nigerians without a reliable and affordable water option.

“Instead of an outright ban, the government could invest in public water systems to ensure a reliable supply of clean water in both urban and rural areas,” he said.

He added that this would reduce the population’s dependence on sachet water.

NNPCL urged to remove hidden levies on Dangote Fuel Price

The Coalition for Energy Reforms and Good Governance Advocacy on Sunday called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL to remove hidden levies and charges on Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, better known as petrol, locally sourced from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

The coalition said the removal of the levies and charges would make the product affordable for Nigerians and end the worsening hardship being faced by citizens.

This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the coalition’s Executive Director, Dr Jonathan Amande.

The concerned citizens are questioning what prompted the fuel hike when the product is being locally refined.

Reacting to the hike, the Coalition called on NNPCL to urgently eliminate hidden charges on fuel prices from the Dangote Refinery, stating that these hidden levies have been added to the Premium, inspection fee, margin and NMDPRA (Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority) fee that were publicly declared.

It argued that “these invisible government levies, including those from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, are unjustified and inflates the cost of locally produced fuel.

”These levies, which have no place in the local production and sale of petroleum products, prevent the Dangote Refinery from selling fuel at more affordable prices.

“Without these additional charges, some of which are layered on the crude supply, local refineries could potentially sell fuel at prices as low as ₦400 per litre,” the Coalition asserted.

Only miracle can save PDP, says Fayose

Ayodele Fayose

A former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has stated that only a miracle can get the Peoples Democratic Party back on track.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday night, Fayose said that the loss suffered by the main opposition party during the 2023 general elections was still haunting the PDP.

The former governor, who was responding to questions on the internal crisis within the party, claimed that aside from the loss suffered, the “arrogance of a few (party chieftains)” also contributed to the party’s discord.

He said, “The elections have come and gone. And because the party suffered a loss, I believe the consequences of that loss are haunting the party. The mismanagement and arrogance of a few are also haunting the party.

“And they say when the head is sick, the whole body is affected. So, it would take God’s intervention or a miracle for this party to be brought together again.

“Because when you hear of suspension on the left and counter-suspension on the right, at that level, a lot has happened, and a lot needsWhen asked how the party can emerge from its current disarray, Fayose explained that all major players must close ranks and learn from past mistakes to move forward.

The main opposition party has been plagued by internal strife, with no signs of the PDP crisis abating soon. Fayose had remarked on Friday that the ongoing drama within the embattled party was becoming increasingly intriguing.

Fayose’s comment came hours after a faction of the PDP National Working Committee suspended the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, for alleged disloyalty to the party.

Earlier, a faction of the NWC aligned with Damagum announced the suspension of the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, also for alleged disloyalty to the party.

By: Benson Nwoko
The Acting Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has called on Special Marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to renew their core mandate of controlling over speeding and other forms of misdemeanour among motorists on the highways.

Onyeme made the call on Saturday in Asaba while commissioning the secretariat of the Special Marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Delta Sector Command.

The Acting Governor, who lauded Special Marshals for building a benefiting secretariat, commended them for devoting time to assisting the Federal Road Safety Corps in the arduous task of saving Nigerian drivers and their passengers from avoidable crashes.

According to him, “I wish to remind both the Road Safety Corps and Marshals of their core mandate of controlling the speed and other forms of misdemeanour of motorists on our highways.

“Continue to ensure that motorists are dissuaded from engaging in telephone discussions while on the steering; such indiscipline often results to avoidable accidents with attendant needless loss of lives.

“I commend all the Special Marshals in this zone for devoting time to assisting the Federal Road Safety Corps in the arduous task of saving Nigerian drivers and their passengers from avoidable accidents and deaths.

“This indiscretion adds to that of drunkenness while driving and I urge you to device methods of identifying the drunken ones among drivers on our highways.

“Marshals should continue to render the selfless services which have distinguished them among compatriots nationwide.”

The Acting Governor, while commending the Special Marshals for their patriotic zeal in rendering selfless services to save lives across the country, called for more stringent measures to check the use of illicit drugs by motorists.

He said, “your sacrifices are appreciated by all well-meaning Nigerians, you have so stamped yourselves and your competence that the fear of Road Safety Officials and Marshals are increasingly becoming the wisdom of drivers and other road users.

“But I am also aware that the issues of drunk driving under the influence of psychotropic substances, overloading and inability to use seat belts, serious as they are, still prevail in spite of the best efforts of the Road Safety Corps and Marshals.

“This calls for renewed efforts to curb these excesses; do not relent your efforts.”

Onyeme urged officials of the FRSC to endeavour to use verbal caution, especially in heavy traffic situations and when dealing with minor  offences.

Earlier, in an address, the Coordinator, Special Marshals RS5.2, Delta Sector Command, Comrade Idolor Odafe, said the newly built office secretariat was a fulfillment of a collective vision borne out of a shared commitment to enhancing road safety infrastructure and supporting the operations of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state.

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Obi(Dr) Henry C. Ajudua-1, CEO, Verbron Carre Foundation fOUNDATION
Obi(Dr)Henry Chukwuman Ajudua-1,
CEO and founder of the charitable Medical Company Vebron Carre, United States

Water is just as important as the air we breathe. It is one of the most important substances on earth that we need to survive. Apart from drinking it to survive, people have many other uses for water. These include cooking, bathing, keeping houses and communities clean among others.

What is important about the water we use is that it must be clean for us to live healthily. Unclean water, on the other hand, can cause many types of diarrheal diseases, including Cholera, and other serious illnesses such as Guinea worm disease, Typhoid, and Dysentery.

Most communities across the country are still faced with the challenges of accessing portable water. In some communities, people travel far distance to get water from streams. This lack of access to portable water exposes them to diseases caused by the use of contaminated water. This was the situation of Otu-Uwolo Community in Igbuzo before the advent of installation of another 650ft borehole in the community by Verbron Carre Foundation founded by Obi Dr. Henry Chukwuma Ajudua-1.

Having been deprived of portable water for years, the joy and gratitude on the faces of the community dwellers was well understood as they received the news of the borehole with so much excitement and relief.

As part of Verbron Carre Foundation’s Sustainability Community Projects Fund, the Water is Life Project! Verbron Carre Foundation continues their philanthropic work in the various communities in Igbuzo, as they have built a standard Borehole in Umukwa-Umuodafe section of Otu uwolo in Igbuzo Oshimili North LGA, Delta State.

According to him, the newly-installed borehole is a crucial addition that now provides the community with access to clean and potable water. He noted that the borehole was a fundamental necessity for a healthy and thriving community.

“The introduction of this borehole is expected to make a significant difference in the well-being and health of the Umukwu community, particularly benefiting those who previously struggled to find clean water,” Obi Ajudua said.
At the moment, work is ongoing for the installations and deliveries of the projects at the various beneficiary communities.
