Speaking to Grassroots Publishers, Mr Chukwuma said his decision was borne out of the desire to ensure that no child would have any reason to drop out of school.According to him, it had been part of his mission to give hope to the less-privileged students, noting that the writing and reading materials would help develop the pupils as well as assist indigent parents who may not be buoyant enough to purchase necessary books for their wards.

He said that his gesture to provide the educational materials was geared towards adding value to the lives of the children, adding that the support would encourage them to take their studies seriously and actualize their dreams in life.

Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Ogbuiji (Hon.) Aneke Ifemeni , who lauded the Okowa administration for prioritising the education sector in the state, appreciated the sponsor, Mr. Augustine Chukwuma for the donation of the educational materials.

Ogbuiji (Hon.) Ifemeni who is a former majority leader of the Delta State House of Assembly in the state admonished every individual to emulate the Permanent Secretary in order to enhance the educational wellbeing of the children in the area.

In his remarks, the Education Secretary, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Rtn Comr. Alexander Osamene said that the state government had constructed modern classroom blocks and had provided boreholes in the school, noting that chairs would be distributed to Ado Primary School in a couple of days from now.

One of the beneficiaries expressed delight, saying the kind gesture extended to them by Mr. Augustine Chukwuma was a major inspiration they needed to fulfill their dreams. DELTA 2023: Sacked Works Commissioner Augoye, Rejects DC-23 Report

Chief James Augoye

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he immediate sacked Delta State Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, has rejected the outcome of the Delta Central (DC-23) lobby group, screening him out of the governorship election come 2023.

The embattled governorship aspirant who was disengaged by the incumbent governor of the state, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, over his aspiration, said he is still very much in the race.

Briefing journalists in Asaba, shortly after DC-23 submitted their final report, said he subjected himself to the DC-23 exercise to fulfill all righteousness, stressing that the outcome of the political pressure group’s screening exercise is not final.

Augoye said he has the mandate of Deltans to represent them as Governor come 2023, and that throwing in the towel at any point when the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was yet to conduct primaries would mean letting Deltans down.

Augoye stressed that candidates for elective positions in Nigeria are determined by political parties and not political pressure groups.

He, therefore, urged his teeming followers in the State, across the federation and in the diaspora to remain calm, focused and stay the course.

Augoye said: “The outcome of the screening exercise of DC-23 has been brought to my notice. The outcome is not surprising. The screening committee had its job cut out.

“I shared my ideas and plans for the growth and development of Delta State with the committee. I was able to prove to the committee that I am the best choice for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to win the 2023 governorship election in Delta.

“I told the committee that I am not only contesting the governorship election on a personal mandate, but on a collective mandate of Deltans. Deltans have reposed their trust on me. They have given me their mandate. So, I cannot let them down.

“Even, our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa and other leaders of our great party, the PDP have agreed that the governorship primaries would be free for all, fair and transparent.

“Moreover, I subjected myself to the screening exercise to fulfill all righteousness. The outcome of the screening is not final. As enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, only a political party can present a candidate for election, not a pressure group.

“On these grounds, I am still very much in the race for the 2023 governorship election of Delta State. We will see at the primaries. At this time, I urge my teeming followers at home and in the diaspora to remain calm, focused and stay the course”.

Election 2023 : Decision of south ‘ll shake Nigeria — Wike

Gov. Wike

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ike also said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, would not give its presidential ticket to any candidate who would serve only the interest of the wealthy few in Nigeria, adding that desperate politicians who will not serve the interest of many, rather the interest of few are already scheming to be candidate.

The governor made the assertion at a grand reception organised in his honour by the people of Kalabari ethnic nationality at the Abalama School field in Asari Toru Local Government Area on Saturday, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media Kelvin Ebiri.

The governor was conferred a traditional title of Se- Ibidokubo of Kalabari land (He who does good things for Kalabari people) and was performed by the Amayanabo of Abonnema, King Gboko Desreal Bob-manuel.

He reiterated that the stakeholders in Southern will soon make a declarative statement concerning 2023 presidential election.

Wike said: “The day the South will speak, Nigeria will shake. We believe in the unity of this country, but nobody can threaten us. Nobody should threaten us. We believe in the unity of Nigeria and unity of Nigeria must continue.”

The governor said no amount of gang up will make the PDP to compromise its stand on integrity.

He said: “His word: “No amount of gang up can make PDP to give somebody who will want to run election for the interest of some big men, and not for all Nigerians.

“Anybody who wants to be candidate of PDP must be candidate for the interest of Nigerians.”

He expressed concerns over the fact that some companies in the country continue to post annual financial profits regularly in a downing national economy to the detriment of the poor.

The governor lampooned Rivers politicians serving in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for their gross inability to attract federal government projects to the State.

Concerning the next governorship of Rivers State, Governor Wike said everybody is entitled to aspire to be the next governor ,but such person must show capacity for that office and be well disposed to protect the interest of the State.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Rivers State Elders Forum, Chief Ferdinand Anabraba, said the grand reception is significant for two reasons; of its critical importance to them as a people and also because of the unity of purpose engendered among them under the Wike’s administration.

He said it is that kind of reception organised for prominent sons and friends who have impacted the Kalabari people.

Chief Anabraba noted that Governor Wike has systematically fulfilled all promises made to them including those of development projects and appointment of Kalabari people into his administration.

Nwaoboshi backs Asagba’s stance against attempt to polarise Anioma Congress

His Royal Majesty Professor Chike Edozien
Asagba of Asaba

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, has decried attempts by some persons he described as political jobbers bent on polarising the umbrella body of the Anioma nation – the Anioma Congress in Delta State.

In a statement signed by the Senator who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, corroborating the position of the Asagba of Asaba, Professor Chike Edozien, on the matter, Nwaoboshi said, nobody can whittle down the strength of the Pan Anioma socio-political group, the Anioma Congress.

He described Anioma Congress as the mouthpiece and the nucleus of the people of Anioma nation and denounced the workings of those he said are bent on retarding the growth of this established body.

The statement reads: “I read with great interest the statement credited to our revered Asagba of Asaba, Asagba (Prof) Chike Edozien, CFR condemning the attempt by some political jobbers to proliferate groups aimed at whittling down the relevance of highly Successful Anioma Congress which has for ages remained the mouthpiece of the entire nation.

“Under the umbrella of all traditional rulers of Delta North, the Anioma Congress under the leadership of Asagba of Asaba have remained apolitical whilst speaking truth to power and protecting the interest of Anioma people generally.

“This is to wholeheartedly endorse the position of the Asagba of Asaba condemning any attempt to weaken the mouthpiece of Anioma people by establishing another competing organ. As the Senator representing the Anioma nation, I am opposed to the Establishment of any other movement and warn that any attempt to proceed on that tangent for political reasons must be resisted by all well-meaning citizens of the Anioma Kingdom.

“I will in due course pay a courtesy call on the Anioma kingdom’s traditional rulers to commend them for standing strong in the face of political overtures detrimental to the well-being of the Anioma people.” The highly accomplished legislator stated, noting that nobody can toy with the progress of Anioma people anywhere in the world.

2023: ASAGBA OF ASABA TAGS PROPONENTS OF ANIOMA UNION COUP PLOTERS, SAYS ANIOMAS ARE OPEN FOR CONSULTATION

Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien
The Asagba of Asaba

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]hairman of Delta North Traditional Rulers Forum, Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien, has described those behind the formation of Anioma Progressives Union to displace Anioma Congress as coup plotters.

Edozien who spoke to newsmen on Friday February 4th 2022, after a meeting of the Forum held in his Palace, which was attended by over 25 Traditional Rulers, said: “We know that any people who cannot live together cannot make progress. Getting together, planning, articulating, moving forward.

“We the Anioma people have set up over the years, organisations for us to survive and progress. The traditional rulers who have been ruling the people have their own meetings that is the Anioma Traditional Rulers’ Forum, but jointly we have the Anioma Congress.

“The common people, the political class all our intelligent people meet together to deal with political and other issues. And they meet under the auspices of the Anioma Congress under the leadership of Chief Benjamin Elue.

“When necessary, the whole body – the traditional rulers and the congress meet together, and that constitute the Anioma People’s Forum. So these have been in existence and still in existence, there is no vacuum. Saying that the Anioma Congress does not exist is trying to carry out coup, and there is no room for that”.

On 2023 gubernatorial election in the State, the Monarch said: “First we called a meeting to address the issues because ethnic groups are coming out to say they want to contest for the governor and they want support.

And so we called the meeting to address the issues. As the general in our midst, give us time to deliberate and make up our mind. Even in the meantime,

“When they come, we will call a meeting to address them. For now, we are open to aspirants for consultation but we will see how things develop, and then we will know what to do. We supported Okowa on the ground of rotation.

“If Isoko come now and insist that it is their turn, what do we tell them? This is open for discussion. With time, we will take a position on zoning when we might have had consultation with our political class because some of the issues have not be discussed.

“For instance, if we agree on rotation, will it be on senatorial district basis or ethnic basis? We will discuss this. If it is rotation by senatorial districts, the Urhobo people of Delta central will have a say. If it is ethnic basis, then only two who have not had the chance, that is Ijaw and Isoko.

“We have not discussed that yet. And if it is to rotate among senatorial districts, that it started from central, where will it start again has not be agreed. So we are open to discussion”.

Meanwhile, the royal fathers also resolved that the Anioma Traditional Rulers Forum has no double leadership, emphasizing that the only recognized leadership of the Forum is the Asagba of Asaba Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien.

“We therefore ask the general public to disregard any publication as it affects Delta North Traditional Rulers Forum that’s is not coming out from the office of our leader, Prof Edozien”.

The Rot in the Force, as Corruption, Poor Welfare and Decaying Infrastructure Become the Order of the Day

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ike a ritual, successive Inspector-General of Police talk tough about rot in the Force: extortion, godfatherism, welfare problem, lack of office stationery, dilapidated, infrastructure and below-poverty-line barracks life.

In their many speeches when they assumed office, they had always told their Commanders that one of the objectives of their mission was to rid the force of corruption – a seeming Siamese twin to virtually every policeman.

But for Nigerians and even the IGs, who have always vowed to jail any policeman caught collecting money, their anti-corruption sermon appears more like lectures for deafs and dumbs without signs. They know so well that the police force, like a ship of debris, is still sinking into infernal decadence with little or no chance of being rescued. Not with rhetoric.

A case in reference, with an eight-point agenda, Tafa Balogun gave the impression that the time indeed had come. He demonstrated this with the dismissal of over 800 policemen nationwide. But when his demise came on Monday 17 January, 2005, it was clear that he was corruption personified.

If the reasons given by the federal government for his removal held any water, the degree of corruption in Nigeria police force remains as big as its former Boss (Tafa Balogun). One thing that is clear is that Tafa Balogun had institutionalized corruption in the Nigeria Police Force. It remains a citadel of extortion, extra-judicial killings and other vices, both at the top echelon and among its men and officers.

Nigeria Police Force Headquarters

Across all roads in the country, every kilometre is a vintage position for a police toll plaza where all commuter and private vehicles are fleeced of various sums of money. Woe betides any driver who dares to refuse payment for whatever reason.

Extortion is not limited to the highways. In every police station across the country, its presence is as huge as the awesome greed of the force’s former boss (Tafa Balogun). There is a fixed price for bail even though it is conspicuously written and displayed that bail is free. No one comes out of any police cell without having to pay money.

Endemic as the phenomenon appears, extortion in both the police stations and highways pale into insignificance when compared to other vices of policemen on the highway. In May 2003, the Kogi State Police Command announced that its men killed three fleeing bandits. Samuel Adetuyi, the State Police Commissioner was full of praises for his men over the feat.

The alleged bandits were paraded alongside some locally made pistols said to have been recovered from them. But a few days later, one of them turned out to be Ibrahim Musa, Captain of the Nigerian Cycling Contingents and a gold medallists at the 2003 Abuja All African Games. He was on his way to Lagos to buy materials for his fast-approaching wedding. The other two persons with him were Mohammed Salisu, an HND student of Kaduna Polytechnic and Sadik Abubakar Mahmoud, both friends of Salisu.

Two years earlier, a bus carrying seven traders, heading to Katsina to buy rams for Sallah, was intercepted by three mobile policemen along Okene/Abuja road. The policemen, who noticed huge sums of money with the traders, tricked them by raising a false alarm that the route was infested with bandits. They also volunteered to take the traders through safer route. It turned out to be an isolated primary where the protector-turned invaders dispossessed them of their money. Before melting into the dark night, the mobile men riddled the traders’ bodies with bullets and set their bus on fire. But two of the traders escape with wounds to report the sordid act. The three policemen were later tried and sentenced to death by hanging.

Rot in the Nigeria Police force is compounded by the problem of welfare. Policemen are known to remain stagnated in one rank for upwards of 18 years. But on 1 February, 2002, aggrieved policemen, under the aegis of Junior Police Officers Association, embarked on an industrial action. The strike, first of its kind in the country, ended the career of Musiliu Smith, then Inspector-General of Police.

Tafa Balogun, his successor, directed the immediate promotion of the affected officers. About 3,000 were elevated. However, the euphoria lasted for as long as it took them to realise that it was promotion without accruing benefits. “I don’t understand why salaries befitting our ranks are not being paid to us. We are continuously told to hold on. That something would be done. But for how long?”, one of the affected officers queried then.

Besides individual neglect, a serving police officer told Grassroots-publishers in Asaba, police formations across the country lack basic infrastructures. Accommodation is a luxury for majority of policemen. Existing barracks are grossly insufficient, dilapidated, overcrowded and dirty. Broken sewages, from which stomach-wrenching stench are emitted, are a common sight in virtually all of them. Water is always in short supply. More often than not, policemen, or their wives and children carry basins, buckets or jerry cans in search of water from surrounding neighbourhood.

In addition, as a lawyer lamented at the Ikeja High Court most police formations lack office equipment. For instance, there is hardly any outside state or national headquarters, where computers are available. Stationery materials for daily office procedures are, almost always, in short supply or unavailable. Individuals who want their cases attended to with dispatch are made to pay for exercise books and other stationery.

Uniforms, including boots, are supposed to be provided for policemen by the government. That has since become a thing of the past. Or so it appears. Those who can afford to buy them do so at their own expense. The cost is taken care of by whoever becomes their prey later. Every uniform on the body of a policeman is bought by the policeman himself including the recruit in the Police College. Where is the money government released for uniform gone to?, some critics asked.

Delta Permanent Secretary Uses Office as Sex Centre

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] newly appointed Permanent Secretary (names withheld) from Anioma nationality was accused of making use of his personal office as a sex centre.

The Permanent Secretary, who works in one of the key ministries in the State has been carrying out this ugly act not until recently when luck ran against him.

It was alleged that he executes his plans especially on Sundays after church service.

Most of his sex mates were girls between the ages of 20 and 25 yrs that were supposed to be his daughters’ age mates.

To be able to keep his wife out of suspicion, he lies to his wife that there were pending official files in the office which ought to be treated and submitted on Monday.

Based on the explanation, the wife always grant him leave without knowing he had appointments with sex mates in the office.

Before the cat was let out of the bag, cleaners have been complaining of how the Permanent Secretary’s office has been messed up with toiletries, condoms and packs of take away from the eatries.

The Permanent Secretary’s Ministry, who is fair in complexion, average height, slim in size is located along Summit Road.

He was caught lying on his sex mate on the long uphostry chair in his office where he forgot to lock the door when one of the security men who was on a duty found the door was unlocked only to see the Permanent Secretary having sex with a woman when he opened the door.

One of the former Secretaries, retired used this same office as a sex centre for young ladies and married women.
