ACNPN Resolves Leadership Crisis as Dike Awana collapsed factional group

By: Precious Eurgo

The crisis that have set Publishers apart in Delta State have finally been laid to rest as the factional Chairman of Association of Community Newspaper Publishers, Dr. Dike Awana have officially resigned his position urging all Publishers in the State to join Association of Community Newspaper Publishers (ACNPN) and support the elected leadership led by Comrade Ike Abiagom.

This is coming after a reconciliation committee was set up by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Newspaper, Mr. Oronomoakpaiye to reconcile Community Newspaper Publishers in the state.

Remarking, the National President of the Federated Union of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, Comrade Dan Awana, admitted that the election which led to the emergence of Comrade Abiagom was genuine.

He pledged to support Comrade Abiagom in his efforts to lead the ACNPN, while he focuses on piloting the affairs of the union at the national level. ‘’A father and his son cannot fight’’ he said.

‘’I have decided, after much consultations, to allow Comrade Abiagom to paddle the canoe. At the same time, I must say that because of the job I have done in publishing, I have been elected as the President of all community newspapers in Nigeria.

‘’So, I cannot be in Abuja and at the same time be in Delta State. It is not so. So, I have mandated Comrade Abiagom to carry on. The Governor is doing very well and he needs us to unite because where there is crisis, development does not come. So, from now henceforth, there is no faction in ACNPN.

‘’On this note, I am surrendering every power I once held back to Comrade Abiagom as the one in charge of the ACNPN in Delta State’’ he said, even as he pledged his continued support to Comrade Abiagom.

” I have trained over 48 Publishers and some of them are in ACNPN, I am also the National President of Federated Association of Publishers, so I have to sit back and reposition my focus on National issues while I support my State Chairman of ACNPN.

On her part, the one time Chairman of ACNPN, Comrade Felida Essie said the crisis has not helped anyone, rather, it has set Publishers against themselves.

She reaffirmed her support to Comrade Ike Philip Abiagom led leadership and advised all Publishers to work with him to consolidate on what the former Chairman, Comrade Jude Obeienyegho had achieved.

Responding, a veteran journalist/Publisher and former special assistant to the former Commissioner for information, Comrade Dave Diai, expressed joy for the reconciliation, even as he recalled efforts to resolve the leadership crisis within the ACNPN.

‘’There is only one ACNPN in Delta State. Elder Awana is the chairman of the national body of community newspaper publishers while Comrade Ike Philip Abiagom is the chairman of ACNPN in Delta State.

‘’On this strength, I want to appeal to all ACNPN members to fall behind this new arrangement that has made Comrade Abiagom the chairman of ACNPN. Recall that he was duly elected as the chairman of this body which is the only substantive body of community newspaper publishers in Delta State’’ he said.

AGENCY FEE: Asagba of Asaba Urges Realtors to be Considerate

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Realtors, popularly called real estate agents, operating in Asaba, have been urged to be considerate in their demand for ten percent charge on any property rented out through them.

His Royal Majesty, the 14th Asagba of Asaba, Asagba Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, who made the call when the newly elected executive of the Association of Organized Realtors, Asaba, visited him, said the ten percent was not an issue, but the tendency to influence landlords to increase their rent beyond the reach of the common man.

Asagba Prof Azinge noted that the perceived greed and high-handedness of the agents had elicited public outcry, forcing many, especially the low income earners, to settle for accommodation in less developed neighboring communities, emphasizing that he owed it a responsibility to protect accommodation seekers, particularly of Asaba extraction.

The First Class king commended the realtors for organizing themselves to be able to speak in one voice and charged the new executive to show leadership that would strengthen and unite the body to achieve set goals.

The Asagba challenged the realtors to be ambitious and strive to progress beyond their present occupation to become property owners and contribute more significantly to the socioeconomic growth of the community and the state at large.

He congratulated the new executive and assured the group of his support, accepting to be the Father of the association.

The traditional ruler affirmed that Asaba had remained a place to be for many, especially non indigenes, who had tapped from the blessings and hospitality of the community for decades and still counting.

Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation and Patron of the association, Hon Chiedu Oburota, said the visit was to congratulate Asagba Prof Azinge on his ascension to the throne, bring the existence of the body to his knowledge, inform him about the emergence of a new executive of the association and its inauguration scheduled for 30th May and to urge His Royal Majesty to be the Father of the association.

Asagba Prof Azinge Announces Constitution of Committee to Determine Asaba Traditional Administration of Justice

The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, has announced the setting up of a Committee to determine the traditional administration of justice in his kingdom.

The Committee, according to the Prof of Law and two-term Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, the Committee is headed by Chike Onyemenam, SAN.

Disclosing this while playing host to members of the Otu Ihaza of Asaba who paid him a visit, Asagba Prof Azinge said the Committee would consider the jurisdiction of the community’s appeal panel, the time frame for filing appeal and the cases within the jurisdiction of the appeal panel to entertain.

The Asagba said the Committee had been mandated to carry out the assignment as quickly as possible and could co-opt the Onoi and Olotor, representing the Ebos, in the course of the engagement.

He expressed the hope that the concerns raised, including the relationship between the Otu Ihaza and the Dispute Resolution Panel, the possibility of ratifying the decisions of the Panel and whether or not to increase the fines, would be addressed in the anticipated Committee’s report.

His Royal Majesty commended the group for delivering on its mandate in spite of the obvious challenges it had to  contend with, expressing satisfaction with the level of commitment and dedication of the members and promising to look into the issue of dilapidated secretariat of the institution.

Earlier, the Onoi of Asaba and leader of the Otu Ihaza, Ogbueshi Uche Nwajei, highlighted the challenges militating against the effective functioning of the group and urged the Asagba to look into them to position the body to seamlessly play its role.

They include the relationship between the group and the Dispute Resolution Panel, unspecified time frame for filing of appeal, the possibility of increasing the group’s fine and dilapidated secretariat.
