He said: “Owelle of Igbuzo,High Chief Sab Adigwe is a Traditionalist with a difference. He is a God-sent chief whose coming has brought so many gain in investment, growth and development, not forgetting the unlimited peace, unity and love that currently exist among his people and within the Ibusa community.

Owelle of Igbuzo, High Chief Sab. Adigwe ,the Chief Celebrant of the IWU festival

“This year’s edition of Iwu Festival is awesome, fantastic and amazing to all and sundry. We hope to sustain this tempo.“We are using this medium to call on Government, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Council of Arts and Culture and other government and culture-loving corporate entities to come and understudy Igbuzo traditions and culture as a way of developing a masterpiece for a viable Tourism Industry. “We are at best with our traditions and culture which need documentation, promotion and marketing from the government for the good of all.

Nwaoboshi said: “Ibusa is reputed for her traditions and culture which are carefully kept and nurtured for centuries. It is a festival usually marked with joy known in our local parlance as “IWU” where people make merry and are free to say anything they like, even to the King. “The IWU Festival is satirical in nature. There is no holds back in exposing what is hitherto known and kept as a secret before an Iwu Festival; it is where every wrongdoing is brought to light. It’s a Festival among several others in the annual festive calendar of Ibusa.

Distinguished Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi with ,Mgboko of Ibusa Kingdom,High Chief Daddy Okeleke

This year IWU festival was proudly sponsored by MTN and HERO beer. In Igbuzo two quarters are known to celebrate IWU festival on annual basis. Ogbeowele and Umuodafe. The people of Ogbeowele Igbuzo celebrated their annual IWU Festival in December (around the Christmas period) drawing the attention of numerous people from far and near to the town. The festival is aimed at cleansing and purifying the town to thank the Almighty God for abundant harvest experienced by farmers all through the year. During this festival, traditional songs are also composed to ridicule defaulters of the norms traditions of the society no matter their social standing in the town. Ohene (chief Priest) and Eze-Iwus are expected to perform some rituals of the cleansing of the town to properly take place.

IWU Festival is one of the finest festivals celebrated by the Anioma people, Iwu is a communal festival with carefully planned programme and high revelry. It lasts for some days and its celebration mostly involves adult and youths who engage in it. In Ibusa, the festival is celebrated by Ogbeowele and Umuodafe Quarters of the town. Ibusa tradition traces the origin of the festival to certain Ibusa warriors who went to Ani-Nmor (Land of the spirits) and returned with the idea of the festival. This according to the mythology explains the dance step of the main characters during the festival. However, popular opinions claim that the festival was imported to Ibusa by Diokpa Oyana of Adigwe family from Umuga Clan of Umuwor in Ogbeowele. It was from Ogbeowele that Umuodafe borrowed the festival and consequently began to celebrate it. The Ogwa (shrine) where IWU was first celebrated in the town can still be seen standing at the entrance of Adigwe family compound. While Ogbeowele celebrates the festival in November, Umuodafe celebrates it in December. Celebration of the festival comes in stages and can be described mainly as an outdoor festival.

The period of preparation for the celebration of IWU in Ibusa is known as “Isibe-Iwu” or “Isibe-Ife”. This is known as the period of silence. It is a period that cries, quarrels, fighting, breaking of firewood and all sorts of noise are forbidden within the vicinity of IWU. The fine for breaking this law may be kolanut, drinks or goat. This period lasts for four days and also forbids performance of Okanga, the running dance and marriages within the Ogbe. Mourners conducting Okanga dance are usually advised to follow alternative routes to avoid disquieting the period. During this period funeral ceremonies are also conducted which means that the dead may be quietly interred without any form of ceremony. This period may be described as “traditional lent”.

The next stage is “Ihoda-IWU” or “Ihoda-Ife. This marks the stage at which Ohene (Chief Priest) of the ceremony declares an end to the 4-day period of silence. It usually takes place in the morning of the fourth day which in turn ushers feral euphoria among inhabitants. These inhabitants then take to the streets in celebration of a new season of rewarding farmers.
It is on this occasion that the people move from house to house congratulating themselves. They may also congregate in groups to other villages to greet their illustrious daughters (Umuada) married in these villages, greeting them “Na ahor, na ahor ka anyi ga eji na gba Iwu, anyi ama gba na ahor yali ahor” literarily meaning that “We shall celebrate IWU Festival from year to year. We shall never celebrate IWU in a year and leave celebrating it in another year”.
Iwu comes with unique songs and dance-steps which are rarely sung on normal days and celebrants appear in groups singing and dancing to tunes composed by them. Major musical instruments are “Agogo” (small gong), Ekwe and Akpele (native flute). Not only does Iwu go with these traditional musical instruments, it also has a tune inimitable to it. Principal characters of the festival are Ohene (Chief Priest), Eze-IWU that are three in number and Enem. Ohene appears in small plain white fabric called Akwa-Ocha covering his waist with a white feather strapped to his head while the Eze-Iwus and Enem appear in red attire. Ohene’s body is robbed with white native chalk called “Nzu.”

Iwu Festival: Nwaoboshi Congratulates Ogbeowelle Quarter

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Most Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ost Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, the member representing Delta North Senatorial District in the Senate Arm of the National Assembly and Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, has congratulated the Ogbeowelle Quarter in Igbuzo,on the celebration of the annual Iwu Festival.

In a statement issued in Asaba on Monday, Nwaoboshi said: “On behalf of the Delta North Senatorial District, I congratulate the Diopka of Ogbeowelle Quarter,  all Ogbeowelle people and our friends on the annual Iwu Festival celebration.  Iwu festival is a remarkable festival of the town worthy of being celebrated and experienced and referred  to as the most revered festival in the ancient town celebrated every year to showcase the rich culture of Igbuzo.

The Distinguished Senator stated that the glory of Igbuzo town lies in its unfettered adherence to its rich culture and traditions

Senator Nwaoboshi promised, among other things, to use this year’s festival as a platform to bring back the glory and viability of other traditional activities of the town that had hitherto become moribund, adding that one of his cardinal objectives is to engage the youths, not only in imbibing the cultural traits and norms of Igbuzo community, but getting involved in their propagations.

The senator wishes the Ogbeowelle Quarter “a glorious celebration, excellent health and the divine wisdom to continue to lead our people to greatness.”

This year’s high profile  Iwu Festival began on Monday 13th December and will be rounded off on Wednesday December 14th.

ASABA FLYOVER: EGWUATU RETEIRATES NWAOBOSHI’S POSITION

Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi

Ogbuefi Ben Egwuatu is  a member of the SPON Media  Aide to Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, has expressed mixed feelings over what it alleged as “poor quality” of the flyover being constructed at the popular Coker Junction in Asaba by the Delta State Government, saying it’s apparent that Senator Nwaoboshi’s recent comment on poor infrastructural development of the state, particularly Asaba, spurred the government to embark on the hurried construction of the flyover.

He urged the governor to emulate the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who he pointed out has constructed about ten flyovers in that state, compared to none under Gov Okowa, “our self appointed roadmaster”!

The fearless Nwaoboshi’s aide stated that Governor Okowa has disappointed the people of Delta state on all fronts, particularly the Anioma nation on whose back he rode to power in 2015/19 saying, the resources that accrued to the state was enough for the governor to turn the fortunes of the oil-rich Delta state to the ‘New York’ of Nigeria.

According to Egwuatu , while Governors Wike, Willy Obiano, Benedict Ayade and Emmanuel Udom of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states are productively growing infrastructure and running existing airports in their states with fleets of commercial planes, for Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers, Governor Okowa sold off the only airport, wondering “what has the people of the state done wrong to warrant such flagrant disregard to development in the state”?

The image maker of Senator Nwaoboshi stated that the Delta, in terms of the monetary accruals from the Federation Account deserves much more than the governor is giving, noting that a former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, had in 2017 stated in Asaba that the monthly accruals from the Federal Government to the state since 1999 when democracy berthed in the country was more than the money used to rebuild entire Europe after the Second World War, even as he called on the governor to step up actions in meaningfully impacting on the lives of the people in the state by doing the needful.

Dr. Emmanuel Udughan, he maintained, initiated most of the projects the current administration is laying claims today, saying the airport the governor sold was entirely the efforts of his predecessor, who he said worked assiduously to rewrite the story of the state in terms of quality service.

He called on the people of the state to support the All Progressives Congress, APC to birth a new state, where prosperity will be taken beyond what he called mere deceptive jamboree and power aggrandisement.

“Thank God we have a Senator, who appreciates development and growth. In Senator Nwaoboshi, the people of Delta North Senatorial District have a man whose gaze is focused on the next developmental project.

Recall that, recently, Senator Nwaoboshi lambasted Delta State Government over the deplorable and poor state of infrastructure in the state capital, Asaba, that has been pitifully turned into a glorified village while the teeming youth population are idle increasing security risk by the current PDP administration.

THE DILEMMA OF DR. TONY NWAKA: THE WRITER IS UNSAFE, A PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE- Ogbuefi Ben Egwuta

By: Ogbuefi Ben Egwuta

DR. TONY NWAKA

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]nce upon a time, Dareen Tatour, a Palestinian poet in northern Israel, was arrested after posting her poetry on Facebook and YouTube …over 300 literary figures signed a petition calling for her release, saying that poetry is not a crime. That is agreeable and profoundly inviolable, but writing through history has been unsafe – The reason is that the writer is in the frontline and when he speaks with his pen, people tend to listen. His conscience is his honour, yet he is a prisoner in waiting; and that is the dilemma of our most respected Dr. Tony Nwaka, in these sad times.

For the discerning, the recent post of Dr. Tony Nwaka is a masterful satire, but discernment is like the two sides of a coin- tail or head. That is why his ‘friends, yes his friends in the PDP where he has served as a Local Government Chairman and as Commissioner, are quick to hound him with a suspension and he will be facing a disciplinary questioning.

The insensible reaction of the PDP in Delta State to the eloquence of a true conscience is and has become the style and footprints of the government in Delta State and it calls for a push back against censorship and fight for literary freedom. Tyranny has been described as cruel, the unreasonable and arbitrary use or exercise of power; and that is what has become the order in our Delta state. We have an Emperor on seat and a cohort of foot soldiers, ready to inflict unjustly on their prey – every opposition, even within their own family.

But Dr. Nwaka has spoken! Llike the words of our fathers – usually in parables, and they are words of wisdom. This struggle shall persist, until the maximum reign, which we have now in Delta state, is conquered.

CHARLES OLISA: THE RANTING OF AN IGNOBLE ERRAND BOY

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]ur attention has been drawn to a media attack in the various forum by the ignoble Dr Charles Olisa. In the said publication, the supposed Dr Charles Olisa now turned political errand boy of Delta State PDP and a serial betrayer, appeared to be urging the Senator representing Delta North, Most Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi (SPON) to render quality representation to Ndokwa nation.

Ordinarily, we would have dismissed the vituperation of Dr Charles Olisa as outburst of a retardant, but we are inadvertently taken aback that the expression of his ignorance that Most Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi (SPON) has attracted over 400 developmental projects to Anioma nation through NDDC, which is a master class performance by Senator Nwaoboshi who was honoured recently by Association of Community(GRASSROOTS)Newspaper Publishers in Delta State as the Best performing Anioma Senator of all time.

It would be foolhardy to join issues with Charles Olisa a sacked banker and a serial betrayer by nature,Deltans cannot forget in a hurry how Charles Olisa betrayed Olorogun O’tega Emerhor after all that he did for him. Olisa has betrayed his social reputation by insinuating in that publication that SPON did not distribute the said projects across Delta North Senatorial District,it is on record that the most strategic and highly valued projects in the amalgam of over 400 projects (according to Dr Olisa)influenced by Senator Nwaoboshi into Anioma Nation is the Federal University of Agriculure and Technology, FUATA,Aboh located in Ndokwa East, a rich oil, gas and electric power generating region.SPON initiated and sponsored this bill in the Senate which has since been passed. The Federal House of Representatives has concurred with this SPON’s initiative by passing this FUATA Bill which now awaits the President’s assent.

Yet, painful to most Ndokwa stakeholders is the fact that the state government told the Ndokwa Nation that despite their rich oil, gas and electric power plant resources that there is no money to fund the Aboh Polytechnic, as approved by PDP under Governor Uduaghan, yet the state government established three higher institutions in the state: The Advanced Teachers Institute; the Federal Road Safety Institute and the University of Agbor Campus – all with billions of Naira worth of state of the art landmark buildings with equipment already constructed and delivered, but ranting Olisa could not speak for the Ndokwa nation because he has sold his conscience against his Ndokwa people because he is presently in the payroll of God-knows-who, and falsely attacked SPON ingloriously for sponsoring a bill, which is successful at the Senate to establish FUATA.

First and foremost, there is no comparison between the massive road infrastructural revolution, renovation of Primary and Secondary Schools, massive supply of chairs and tables to schools and solar light in Ndokwa Nation as experienced under the Most Distinguished Senator Nwaoboshi. The Proactive representation by SPON against the 16 years record of ‘lukewarmness and insensitivity’ by the Senators of that era to provide for the Ndokwa’s their decades-old yearnings of a higher Institution be tagged as a poor representation of Ndokwa land by SPON as asserted by his political opponents and bribe induced political BETRAYER.

Even if Dr Charles Olisa is blinded by his card carrying status as a new member of the shattered Peoples Demoracatic Party (PDP), he can attest at least to the fact that over 400 marathon projects attracted by Most Distinguished Senator Nwaoboshi in less than six years are signature projects not only in Ndokwa nation but also in all the five local government areas of Delta North.

No doubt, the emptiness of ideas and vague thoughts in the expression of Charles Olisa shows that clearly has been overwhelmed by the beehive of activities of our Super Senator who brought glory, equity distribution of Dividends of Democracy to the good people of Delta North.May we remind a distasteful people like Charles Olisa that six years down the line, besides massive roads infrastructure to boost high economic activities in the Delta North, Most Distinguished Senator Nwaoboshi has gradually but steadily both the healthcare and education sectors, both in infrastructure and human capital development, with training, expansion policies as well as regular supportive activities on health and educational facilities in Delta North.

Since SPON became Anioma Senator, we are experiencing changes in terms of development. The list goes on because he has touched all sectors. I am sure, by the grace of God, by the time SPON leaves office, His after story will live after him and his children.”

The list of Nwaoboshi’s impact to Anioma development is endless. One very significant legacy is the Federal University of Agriculure and Technology,Aboh at the public hearing of FUATA, held in Abuja at the Senate on the 29th of July, 2021, the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) President and mouthpiece of Ndokwa Nation referred to SPON as the political ‘Jesus’ of the Ndokwa nation for his selfless initiative in sponsoring the FUATA bill.
From the forgoing, we expected Dr Charles Olisa who appears to have no defence to the abysmal performance of his paymasters in Ndokwa nation since 2015 till date,How appropriate can we explain to people like Dr Charles Olisa whose right sense of reasoning seems to have failed. In his effort to play to the gallery,we have expected the malignant Dr Charles Olisa to provide answer to the reason why the state government refused to fund Aboh Polytechnic approved by PDP under Governor Uduaghan?” Who is deceiving who?

Apparently, it is very evident in his incoherent and disjointed expressions of the press statement that Dr Charles Olisa’s claim that SPON does not have constituency projects in Ndokwa land and other NDDC projects were almost non-existent in the Ndokwa Land, are only uttered out of the figment of his imagination.

For emphasis, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi has demonstrated clear visionary leadership since he became senator in 2015 till date. He has demonstrated transparency and proactive representation which has enabled him achieve so much in the overall development of Delta North to the shame of past predecessors that failed woefully as Anioma Senators, Nwaoboshi has proven beyond any doubt that he is a man of integrity who can be trusted with the mandate of the people of Delta North and beyond.

Recall that during a condolence visit to Nnabuife’s residence in Ibusa to commiserate with the family, Senator Nwaoboshi described late Mama Maria Nnabuife as a good Christian who lived a good life, which can be attested to by those who knew her.

“Mama was a mother to all, she lived a good life and accomplished a lot in her lifetime. She emphasised education, among other things. We all are her children; we thank God for her life.”

According to the governor, Late Mrs. Nnabuife had a fair share of success and accomplishment in life, leaving good legacies for her children to emulate, adding, “We are here to assure you of our administration’s support as we stand by you at this trying time.”
Late Mama Maria Nnabuife was a consummate politician who commanded immense influence in the political scene in Ibusa and led a number of meetings in her area until her death.
