Chairman of the committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters,Nyesom Wike, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, Gov. Most Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi
[dropcap]M[/dropcap]embers of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters have endorsed the Dr. Nabo Graham Douglas campus of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt and declared that it has come to stay.
The committee members led by Chairman of the committee, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele , Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi and others gave the endorsement shortly after inspecting ongoing civil construction work at the campus as part of their oversight function in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
They were conducted round the project sites by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, first to the staff quarters beside the Hotel Presidential and then to the Law School campus at Rumueme, Port Harcourt.
Kelvin Ebiri, Special Assistant Media to the Rivers State Governor, reports that Chairman of the committee, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele said they are, no doubt, impressed with what they have seen in Port Harcourt. According to him, their colleagues in the Senate, including the leadership of the Senate who have invested so much trust and put them in charge of the committee are waiting to hear from them.
But, he emphasised, that what they have seen is consistent with global best practices and standards when it comes to providing legal education.
“And we are really excited about this for the future of the legal profession which is our own primary constituency, because ours is a committee where virtually, all members are lawyers and members of this profession.
“It was important for us to come here because we are not going to just write any report and take any decision based on sentiment. I mean, this is a nonpartisan legislative action.”
Senator Bamidele noted that Rivers State is boldly setting a standard for legal education in the country and it does appear to be a high one.
“After inspecting the ongoing works, his Excellency, the Governor also took us to inspect existing property that have been acquired for the purpose of surrendering these same property to the Law School to use as a source of revenue. That’s why I’m saying there’s a Rivers standard.
“And of course, when you now come to the quality of what is on ground, more than any of the Law Schools that have existed before the creation of this, we have seen quality here that will distinctly place this on the world map when you’re talking about Law School campuses that can stand the test of time.”
Senator Bamidele explained that having come to determine what actually is on ground and also to see the quality of work, they are fascinated to see about 750 workers on the construction site.
According to him, that is something that gladdens their hearts because at a time like this, the Rivers State government is able to provide such number of jobs to its people.
“There is a need for us to engage in activities that will create employment opportunities for our people. We have seen a lot of artisans here at work, contractors are here at work.
“A lot of building materials are being brought to this site and the economic implication of these are far reaching for Rivers State and in the long run, for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We do not take that for granted. Beyond the employment opportunities that this is creating temporarily, we also know that an additional campus of the Nigerian Law School taking off in Port Harcourt would also mean a long term career job opportunities for people who will also work here as administrative staff.
“The number of lecturers that will increase, as career people. We feel that’s another reason why this deserve to be celebrated.”
Senator Bamidele said except the Lagos campus of the Nigerian Law School that was created by an operation of law in 1962, the other five campuses were created by administrative action like the campus in Port Harcourt because it was approved by the President of the country.

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]gbuefi Ben Egwuatu is a member of the SPON Media Aide to Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, has expressed mixed feelings over what it alleged as “poor quality” of the flyover being constructed at the popular Coker Junction in Asaba by the Delta State Government, saying it’s apparent that Senator Nwaoboshi’s recent comment on poor infrastructural development of the state, particularly Asaba, spurred the government to embark on the hurried construction of the flyover.
According to Egwuatu , prior to the challenge thrown by the distinguished Senator Nwaoboshi over the poor infrastructure in Asaba, the state capital, Delta State Government had been sleeping and relishing the deception and illusion of being “a roadmaster”, noting that even the flyover project that he is belatedly embarking upon is being badly executed due to the poor and low grade of the contractor.
He urged the governor to emulate the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who he pointed out has constructed about ten flyovers in that state, compared to none under Gov Okowa, “our self appointed roadmaster”!
Egwuatu further challenged Senator Okowa to dare to compare the developmental strides of the governors of Ebonyi, Bornu, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Kano states in quality flyover construction in quality fly over project construction, and others, who he said have taken developments in their respective states to the next level.
The fearless Nwaoboshi’s aide stated that Governor Okowa has disappointed the people of Delta state on all fronts, particularly the Anioma nation on whose back he rode to power in 2015/19 saying, the resources that accrued to the state was enough for the governor to turn the fortunes of the oil-rich Delta state to the ‘New York’ of Nigeria.
According to Egwuatu , while Governors Wike, Willy Obiano, Benedict Ayade and Emmanuel Udom of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states are productively growing infrastructure and running existing airports in their states with fleets of commercial planes, for Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers, Governor Okowa sold off the only airport, wondering “what has the people of the state done wrong to warrant such flagrant disregard to development in the state”?
The image maker of Senator Nwaoboshi stated that the Delta, in terms of the monetary accruals from the Federation Account deserves much more than the governor is giving, noting that a former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, had in 2017 stated in Asaba that the monthly accruals from the Federal Government to the state since 1999 when democracy berthed in the country was more than the money used to rebuild entire Europe after the Second World War, even as he called on the governor to step up actions in meaningfully impacting on the lives of the people in the state by doing the needful.
Dr. Emmanuel Udughan, he maintained, initiated most of the projects the current administration is laying claims today, saying the airport the governor sold was entirely the efforts of his predecessor, who he said worked assiduously to rewrite the story of the state in terms of quality service.
He called on the people of the state to support the All Progressives Congress, APC to birth a new state, where prosperity will be taken beyond what he called mere deceptive jamboree and power aggrandisement.
“Thank God we have a Senator, who appreciates development and growth. In Senator Nwaoboshi, the people of Delta North Senatorial District have a man whose gaze is focused on the next developmental project.
Recall that, recently, Senator Nwaoboshi lambasted Delta State Government over the deplorable and poor state of infrastructure in the state capital, Asaba, that has been pitifully turned into a glorified village while the teeming youth population are idle increasing security risk by the current PDP administration.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he major opposition party in Delta State, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has ridiculed the Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration over comments credited to him on rescue mission.
The party in a statement on Friday November 5th 2021 by the Publicity Secretary (Caretaker), Sylvester Imonina, Esq., challenged the Okowa government to begin his rescue mission from home.
APC in the statement called out on Okowa, to be quiet when issues of development is being discussed as he has failed Deltans in the issue of overall development across the state.
There is a common saying that “charity begins at home”, and in Delta State, there is a common adage that says “fufu wey dey full belle, na eyes them they take know am”.
In the light of the above, Delta APC dare to say that it is ludicrous for Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa and his “hallelujah boys” in Delta State to tell Nigerians that they are out on a rescue mission to rescue Nigeria.
Before now, Delta APC did not want to join issues with Okowa and his aides, but because the opposition party does not want Deltans to go back to the yesteryears of political locust, hence the party’s reaction to PDP attempt to deceive Deltans.
Considering what Deltans are going through in the hands of PDP led-Government of Delta in relation to human and infrastructural development, it is preposterous for the State Governor to say anything about the development of Nigeria and Nigerians. Is there any meaningful development in Delta State? Why can’t he maintain silence when issues of development are being discussed!
Delta APC and Deltans are asking Gov. Okowa the following questions!
(1) What is the state of Warri industrial Park?
(2) What is the State of Kwale industrial Park?
(3) What is the state of Oleri leisure Park?
(4) What is the state of Warri-Ode Itsekiri road?
(5) Why are the few roads constructed in the State by your administration collapsing in less than three months of their construction?
(6) Why are companies and/ or investors moving out of Delta State in droves?
(7) Why is it that the only source of employments to Delta graduates are riding of tricycles (keke) and “tuketukes”?
(8) Why is the exact take home of State civil servants not known and/ or shrouded in secrecy?
(9) Why are the Local Government workers and primary school teachers owed for months without being paid?
(10) Why are retired local government workers’ entitlements not paid since 2014?
(11) Why are retired State workers not paid then pensions and gratuities since 2016?
(12) Why are the few available employment opportunities in Delta State civil service shrouded in secrecy?
(13) Why are there no known State Government Contractors in Delta State of today, unlike in the time past where there was hardly any Street in Delta State without Goverment contractors?
(14) What is the state of Ada-Irri-Okpe-Isoko-Ofagbe Road?
Delta APC challenges Gov. Okowa to rescue those projects and/ or answer the above questions before he and his likes will talk about rescuing of Nigeria. Deltans are wiser now!
Without holding brief for the media handlers of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, it is a known fact that gargantuan achievements have been made by the present APC led Federal Goverment which are but not limited to the followings:
(a) Construction and revamping of the rail sector.
(b) Construction and rehabilitation of hundreds of Federal roads and Bridges which were before now not motorable. The multi-billions second Niger bridge between Asaba and Onitsha speaks volumes.
(c) Reforming and revamping the Payment of pensions for federal civil servants.
(d) Total overhauling of most of the seaports and airports for optimal performances.
(e) Revamping of the agricultural sector which has given room to astronomical increase in rice production and other cereal crops.
(f) Social investment programmes like Npower, market money, Covid-19 loans, special public works (SPW) and other related programmes that have in no small measure put smiles on the faces of Deltans in particular and Nigerians in general.
The above mentioned Federal Goverment’s programmes are accessed by Nigerians irrespective of political and ethnic leaning /cleavages; unlike in Delta State where some purported programmes of the State Government are shrouded in secrecy!
It is very unfortunate that despite the fact that Delta State is the highest recipient of Federal allocations for more than three years now, meaningful development is far from Deltans.
The PDP led-Government of Delta State should bury its head in shame when issues of human and capital developments are talked about. Deltans are wiser now, as they cannot be deceived again with PDP political rhetorics.
