As family, friends, associates and admirers across Nigeria gather to celebrate the 84th birthday of Prof. Austin Udeze Uwandulu, tributes have continued to pour in for a man widely regarded as one of the nation’s foremost advocates of strategic governance, institutional development and democratic ideals.
Born on May 21 in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, to Mr. Paul and Mrs. Lucy Uwandulu of Ibusa, Prof. Uwandulu spent his early childhood in Jos, Plateau State, where he began a journey that would later place him among Nigeria’s most respected intellectuals and strategic thinkers.
He attended St. Paul’s CMS School, Jos, for his primary education before proceeding to Anglican Grammar School, Ubulu-Uku, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1962. Determined to pursue academic excellence, he undertook private studies through correspondence courses with Rapid Result College and earned his GCE Advanced Level Certificate in 1964.
Prof. Uwandulu later attended the University of Lagos, where he obtained his B.Sc, Master’s and PhD degrees in Strategic Management, laying the academic foundation for a career dedicated to leadership development, policy formulation and institutional advancement.
A distinguished son of Igbuzo and a respected voice from the Anioma nation, Prof. Uwandulu has built a remarkable legacy defined by intellectual excellence, patriotism and unwavering commitment to national progress. Over the decades, he has remained a symbol of visionary leadership whose contributions have continued to shape conversations around governance, policy formulation and sustainable development in Nigeria.
Prof. Uwandulu is best known as the founder of the Chartered Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria (CISMN), an institution established to promote strategic thinking, professional management and purposeful leadership across both public and private sectors.
Through his vision and dedication, the institute has grown into a respected professional body championing the need for long-term planning and strategic administration in national development.
One of the defining moments of his illustrious career came with the successful passage of the CISMN Establishment Act, which was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari. The landmark legislation was widely celebrated as a major step toward institutionalizing strategic management practices in Nigeria and strengthening governance structures for future generations.
