[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has opened up on the vast amount of money that have been siphoned by a selected but unelected group of Nigerians going home with fat pockets and bank accounts.
The president made the shocking revelation on Monday July 2023, while addressing Nigerians during a nationwide broadcast.
He insisted that the money lost to fuel subsidy theft would have improved the living standard of all Nigerians if channeled into various sectors of the economy.
According to him: “For several years, I have consistently maintained the position that the fuel subsidy had to go. This once beneficial measure had outlived its usefulness. The subsidy cost us trillions of Naira yearly.
“Such a vast sum of money would have been better spent on public transportation, healthcare, schools, housing and even national security. Instead, it was being funnelled into the deep pockets and lavish bank accounts of a select group of individuals.
“This group had amassed so much wealth and power that they became a serious threat to the fairness of our economy and the integrity of our democratic governance.
“To be blunt, Nigeria could never become the society it was intended to be as long as such small, powerful yet unelected groups hold enormous influence over our political economy and the institutions that govern it.
“The whims of the few should never hold dominant sway over the hopes and aspirations of the many. If we are to be a democracy, the people and not the power of money must be sovereign.
“The preceding administration saw this looming danger as well. Indeed, it made no provision in the 2023 Appropriations for subsidy after June this year.
“Removal of this once helpful device that had transformed into a millstone around the country’s neck had become inevitable.
I want to talk to you about our economy.
“It is important that you understand the reasons for the policy measures I have taken to combat the serious economic challenges this nation has long faced”.
He said: “I am not going to talk in difficult terms by dwelling on economic jargon and concepts. I will speak in plain, clear language so that you know where I stand.
“More importantly, so that you see and hopefully will share my vision regarding the journey to a better, more productive economy for our beloved country”, he said.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he election of Mr. Ngozi Okolie of Labour Party as member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of Delta State in the House of Representatives was on Monday nullified by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba, Delta State.
In about 107-page judgement that lasted over five hours, the three-member tribunal headed by Justice A.Z. Mussa, disqualified Okolie and consequently declared the runner up in the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election, Ndudi Elumelu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as winner.
Elumelu, who is the immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, had in petition number EPT/DL/HR/06/2023, approached the tribunal, seeking to disqualify Okolie on the grounds that he was not properly sponsored by the Labour Party and that he did not resign his position as a public office holder.
The tribunal agreed with the petitioners that the Second Respondent (Okolie) was not duly sponsored by the Third Respondent (Labour Party) as he was not a member of the party as at May 28, 2022 when the LP primary purportedly held.
The tribunal also resolved in favour of the petitioners that the Second Respondent did not resign from public office to contest the elections which is in violation of the provision of the law.
In an interview with newsmen the Petitioners’ Counsel, Andrew Osememedua Odum, SAN, described the judgement as “a correct exposition of jurisprudence and the law.”
“We also proved and the tribunal agreed with us that there was no primaries, there was no sponsorship, the Labour Party did not conduct any primaries for the National Assembly election.
“Sections 65 and 66 of the Constitution require that for a person to be qualified to contest election into the House of Representatives, he must belong to a political party and must be sponsored by that political party. In this instance, Okolie, the tribunal found was not duly sponsored by the Labour Party because there was no primaries.
“On the second ground, the tribunal also found in our favour that Okolie was in public office, he did not resign, he continued to collect salaries and emoluments in breach of the law.
“So, for these two reasons his election was nullified and in line with Section 135 of the Electoral Act, Hon. Elumelu who was the first runner up was declared winner of that election,” he added.
Reacting, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu commended the Judiciary for the courage in upholding justice and described the judgement as victory for democracy, Rule of law and the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal.
He maintained that the judgment has further reaffirmed that the judiciary is the last hope for the common man who feels aggrieved and followed due judicial process of asking for redress.
Elumelu appreciated the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, the Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and the wife, the immediate past Governor of the State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, who he noted set the ground running and supported him immensely.
He also appreciated the former Vice-president and Presidential candidate of the PDP in the last Presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, his supporters as well as the media for their roles in the quest for justice on the matter.
The immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, also commended Ngozi Lawrence Okolie for the way he comported himself throughout the period of the sitting of the tribunal and urged Okolie to join hands with him to move the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency forward.
Chief Nkem Okwuofu in her reaction also commended the Judgment of the tribunal and described it as an act of God. Others who reacted to the Judgment included, Chief Chris Agbabu, Chief Patrick Ukah, Hon. Chikazia, Chief Edwin Uzor, Chief Emma Chinye, Chief Dada Okonji and Mr. Olise Ifeajika.
They all congratulated Elumelu for the victory at the Tribunal and called on the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency to remain steadfast in rallying round Hon Elumelu as he continue with his effective representation in the House of Representatives
[dropcap]D[/dropcap]istinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi(SPON) arrived Delta State to a tumultuous welcome by supporters and well wishers from across party line. This was his first visit to the state after his incarceration and illegal imprisonment by Appeal Court for twelve months and six days. The Senator was received by huge crowd of supporters, relations and other stakeholders in the state beyond party boundary.
Grassroots Publishers online gathered that Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi touched down at the Asaba International Airport, Delta State, at 1.30pm and he was accompanied by two serving APC Senators from Delta State, Senator Joel Onowakpo and Senator Ede Dafinone . The Senator had to complete the journey home on road to his town Ibusa.
The home coming was the first in the past one year that Senator Nwaoboshi regained his freedom after he was released from the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, on the order of the Supreme court.
It was gathered that the leadership of Anioma, leaders of different social-cultural groups and thousands of supporters converged at the airport to receive the Distinguished Senator on arrival.
The Senator had in a brief media interaction, expressed his joy to be home again and condemned his incarceration and illegal imprisonment by Appeal Court for twelve months and six days. Recall that in July 2022, He was sentenced to 7 years in prison after he was illegally convicted by the Appeal Court in Lagos, but the Supreme court on July 7, 2023, then nullified his conviction on grounds of illegality.
The Supreme Court’s judgment acquitting Senator Peter Nwaoboshi of money laundering and fraud charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s shows why the anti-graft agency ought to be reformed and disband.
Senator Nwaoboshi as a man of coat of many colours just like the biblical Joseph, After Joseph regained his freedom from prison, he became Prime Minister in a foreign land. Similar kismet was also meted on SPON, and he came out triumphantly.
Some people saw tomorrow and raised the dust of unbending enmity and got Distinguished Senator Nwaoboshi incarcerated but God as a chain breaker broke the prison gate and set his anointed free by giving him a resounding victory at the Supreme Court, as justice delayed was never a justice denied in his case.
And it became obvious to the blind and audible enough to the deaf that the sheer persecution of Nwaoboshi is a disingenuous enterprise to depreciate his lofty political capital ahead of the much dreaded 2023 Senatorial election.it is quite unfortunate that Delta North sons were involved in the incarceration and illegal imprisonment of an illustrious Anioma son.
Nwaoboshi ’s convoy went through Asaba, Delta State capital, amidst cheers from residents on his way to Ibusa, his hometown. “So today, after the much-failed efforts made to curse a man whom God has already blessed, that man has come to take his rightful place as our leader. He’s the APC leader in the Delta North; he’s Delta North political leader no matter the party you belong and he’s the man who everybody gives the respect as Anioma original leader”, Now that the battle line is drawn and with his proficient wealth of experience, Nwaoboshi has the administrative paraphernalia and wherewithal to reclaim back his mandate soon. He was received warmly by his family, friends, brothers and sisters backed by his political associates from APC,PDP,Accord Party,Labour Party and others
Nnam Oracle Nua,Nua,Nua.
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ge may be a number but life is certainly a battle. And if the life is that of the urbane and personable , Hon. Leo Nneaka, then life is not only a battle–it is a full blown war. Ever since he adorned himself as a soldier for good, he has had no reprieve from the unrelenting forces of evil. He is caught in the vortex of the eternal battle between good and evil.
Indeed, to those who know him up close and personal, Leo is an enigma: humble, self-effacing, industrious, practical, efficient by nature, diligent, always thinking about things he needs to accomplish or how to get ahead on his next assignment, a complete Cancer, if you care to assess him by his Zodiac sign. But in plain terms, he is a case of a man who set out to always make a difference wherever he found himself. Not the kind of difference other men pursue to grandstand, but the type that impacts humanity and makes life easier for people. And of this, his track record is unassailable. A look back at his trajectory gives a chronicle of exemplary service to his community and a profile of pure patriotism from an individual.
Greatness is a property for which no man can receive credit too soon; it must be possessed long before it is acknowledged. ”When one of the world’s greatest thinkers, Ralph Waldo Emerson handed down the above words of wisdom, those he had in mind were certainly the likes of Hon. Leo Nneaka (Ohamadike 1)! .
For the trail-blazing Social Media influencer and Business mogul and from Umueze-Ibusa,Delta State, it is certainly impossible to gloss over his attributes for greatness. He is the embodiment of cerebral articulation, the essence of unparalleled philanthropy, the epitome of intellection and breathtaking simplicity, the personification of undiluted humanness, the perfect example of Political leadership symbolism, the paragon of idealism, the soul of humanity, the heart of warrior, a perfect gentleman. In the gallery of great leaders and great men, he is without doubt, a rare masterpiece. Anyone who encounters him would love to associate with him for his candour, courage and forthrightness. As a human being, his humility and modesty is second to none. As an Businessman, he is sound and engaging.
Hon. Leo Nneaka,he means different things to different people; to his wife and children, he is a loving husband and a kind daddy, while to us his admirers, he is known as the Digital Business Strategist but his detractors always erroneously see him as an obstacle because of his rising profile in business, Media, Politics and acceptance by the grassroots.
Leo is not only the Pride of Nneaka’s but also the Pride of the People of Oshimili North Local Government Area for whom he had waged countless business and political wars for and won virtually all, just like the Greek mythological Odyssey who fought and won difficult battles in History. Indeed the birthday celebration of this digital Social Media influencer of our time had been useful and Resourceful for his service to humanity. Therefore today let me on behalf of Most Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi (SPON) Political Family and Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi (SPON) media team join the rest of my beloved Ibusa kingdom in Oshimili North Local government Area of Deltans and Nigerians at large to celebrate our amiable Social Media influencer and Political iconoclastic Ohamadike International,to thank Almighty God for adding another year to his life and to pray that God continues to bless him with robust health, protection, and enduring provision. Your political reign shall bring prosperity and peace to Ibusa, Oshimili, Delta State and Nigeria in general.
Your legendary generosity and willingness to do good at all times is documented in the hearts of millions. That is why on your birthday, You deserves a toast and song, “Happy birthday to you…” Above all, You deserves a prayer from everyone who is on the side of truth in the eternal battle between truth and falsehood.
Happy birthday to the regent, aka Ohamadike 1 a great lover of our tradition.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has categorically rejected the recently proposed palliatives package, including the provision of N8, 000 (eight thousand naira only) to 12 million poor households across the country for a period of six months and also resolved to pull out of the various committees on fuel subsidy palliatives, even as it has equally vowed to resist any further increase of the product.
This strong position, coming in the wake of another astronomical spike in the petrol pump price which has rising to over N600, as at today, was contained in a Release signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero and titled: ‘THE PROPOSED PALLIATIVES, CASH TRANSFERS, ROBS THE POOR AND PAYS THE RICH: WE REJECT IT, in which the Labour movement insists that it has restrained itself and allowed it’s members to be in some palliatives committees, to avoid any misinterpretation from the new government in power, but it appears workers patience are being taken for granted.
The NLC Statement, which describes the new regime of pump price of fuel announced by the NNPC, as provocative and designed to worsen the poverty level and hardship Nigeria are passing through, further added that since June 19, 2023, when it was agreed to set up committees with a National Steering Committee, government is yet to make any move to inaugurate the committees, but news flying around of further hike in pump price.
The NLC warns that the current government must watch clearly and observe that the impunity displayed by the immediate past government, is not allowed to rare its ugly head, and that the workers are fully ready to stop any anti-people policy. On the proposed N8000 palliatives to 12 million families, the Labour movement says it stands rejected as it is another charade of the Nigerian ruling class to deceive the poor masses.
Labour argues that it does not have confidence on how the data of the 12 million poor family was arrived at, calling on Nigerians to reject it as it is most likely to go the way of the homegrown school feeding programme and the covid-19 palliative, which were more or less conduit pipes for corruption.
The Press statement reads in part:
“We woke up this morning (Tuesday) to the news that NNPCL has increased the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the hitherto draconian N587/liter to N617/litre.
“This is despite the suffering and hardship that Nigerians have had to go through as a result of the original hike on May 29, as part of President Tinubu’s inaugural gift to Nigerians.
“An 18 percent increase in the price of fuel at this time of great difficulties for our people is sadistic and totally unacceptable.
“The NLC considers this most insensitive and horrendous and smirks of a triumphalism by this government against the masses of this country.
“It looks like a feeling by those in government that the people have become a conquered people that they can treat anyhow they like without repercussions and this demonstrates why it has taken pleasure in inflicting more and more pains and sorrow on the people.
“We strongly condemn this latest unilateral increase and warn the government to desist from trying the patience of Nigerians.
“What the government has done is capable of pushing Nigerian people to the edge of the precipice and can trigger a raging fire that may overwhelm whatsoever mechanisms the government thinks it has put in place as safeguards.”
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he House of Representatives has rejected a motion seeking to stop the increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The motion was shutdown at Plenary on Wednesday after a member, Ugochinyere Ikenga raised the motion.
The motion was titled “The need to investigate the incessant increase in fuel pump price since the removal of petrol subsidy.”
Recall that on Wednesday, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited reviewed its petrol pump price to N617.
This is coming months after the NNPCL directed its outlets nationwide to sell fuel between N480 and N570 per litre, an almost 200 per cent increase from the initial price below N200. prices which are different across the states of the Federation.
But the review on Wednesday was questioned by Ikenga, who alleged that the increase had become incessant and needed to be investigated.
He said, “Mr Speaker, this is the people’s house and we represent the Nigeria people, very soon with the way things are going fuel will be sold for 1,000 per litre.”
But members of the house voted against the amendment after Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary questioned if it was in the place of the House to take such a position since pump price is controlled by the market forces.
However, the house resolved to carry out an investigation to ascertain the veracity of the increases.
[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Bola Tinubu has written to the National Assembly, seeking an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act.
Tinubu, in a letter to the House of Representatives, said the amendment was to allow the Federal Government to source ₦500 billion for palliatives to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit known as petrol.
During plenary on Wednesday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, read Tinubu’s letter, titled, ‘Request for the amendment of the 2022 appropriation act’.
According to the President, the money would be sourced from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act of ₦819.5 billion.
“I write to request the approval of the House of Representatives for the amendment of the 2022 supplementary appropriation act in accordance with the attached.
“The request has become necessary in other to among other things source for funds necessary to provide palliatives to mitigate the effect of the recent removal of fuel subsidy on Nigerians.
“Thus the sum of ₦500 billion only has been extracted from the 2022 supplementary appropriation act of ₦819.536 billion for the provision of palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal. I hope that the House of Representatives will consider the request,” the letter read.
This is coming about six weeks after Tinubu announced that the payment of subsidy on petroleum was over.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA), Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, affirmed that the legislative, executive and judiciary arms of government need the Community Newspapers to function credibly, stressing that without Community Publishers, Communities will not be informed on the policies and activities of the government.
The speaker gave the commendation when the Chairman of the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria, (ACNPN)Comr. Jude Obiemienyego led his members to a courtesy visit in his office at Asaba, the state capital.
Rt. Hon. Guwor maintained that there was the need to continue to maintain the cordiality among the three arms of government and the Forth Estate of the Realm in the state so as to attract greater dividends of democracy to the people as espoused by state government, adding that Community Publishers should endeavour to report issues correctly and shun the pull to publicize fake news for whatever reasons. He has advised Community Publishers to continue to exhibit core tenets of the profession anchored on objectivity, fairness and balance in their reportage as it was the only way to engender an egalitarian society.
Rt. (Hon) Guwor, maintained that the Delta State House of Assembly under his leadership will partner with Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria (ACNPN) for better working relationship that will lead the state to greater height.
Delta Sate Chairman of ACNPN, Comrade Jude Obiemenyego, in his remarks, assured that the association will work with the legislative arm of government in actualising good policies that would bring upliftment and development to the State.
Earlier on, during his address, the Chairman, ACNPN, Comr. Jude Obiemienyego, opined that the visit was geared towards interfacing with the office of the Speaker on his activities to enable a robust working relationship with indigenous publishers.
Jude continued: “Good information machinery is indeed a veritable tool and an indispensable driving force for every people-oriented government.”
He assured that the association will work with the legislative arm of government in actualising good policies that would bring upliftment and development to the State.
Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi(SPON)
[dropcap]D[/dropcap]istinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi(SPON)can only be compared to the biblical Joseph, going by the trajectory of his early days, Oracle in Politics, as he is fondly called, has so many attributable tales which are in sync with the biblical Joseph. It is impossible to castrate a lion, render it impotent or silence its roar. Senator Nwaoboshi is the voice of the voiceless, he is a warrior, he fears nothing, He fear no-one, He is as constant as the northern star and He will ALWAYS stand against evil.
Senator Nwaoboshi as a man of coat of many colours just like Joseph,After Joseph regained his freedom from prison, he became Prime Minister in a foreign land.
Most Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi (SPON)
And it became obvious to the blind and audible enough to the deaf that the sheer persecution of Nwaoboshi is a disingenuous enterprise to depreciate his lofty political capital ahead of the much dreaded 2023 Senatorial election. With his proficient wealth of experience, Nwaoboshi has the administrative paraphernalia and wherewithal to hold the highest political office in the country.
The Supreme Court’s judgment acquitting Senator Peter Nwaoboshi of money laundering and fraud charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s shows why the anti-graft agency ought to be reformed and disband.
Thoughts of the injustice that the appelant had been through and what he suffered as a consequence. Secondly, for the rape of our country through impunity and wanton abuse of power and privileges. For ages, I have been crying for this country; when will I stop? Perhaps now that we have renewed hope.Let’s look briefly at the facts of the case and what the Supreme Court judges said.
Firstly, it was established that Nwaoboshi’s company legitimately obtained a loan from Nexim Bank. It was from this loan that the payment of N322m was made in respect of the property purchased. The money could not, therefore, be rightly or sensibly described as a proceed of crime. Further, the loan was subsequently repaid with interest on the loan. The court stressed the obvious: that disputes pertaining to loans were the subject of civil litigation and not criminal prosecution, so the EFCC had no business prosecuting Nwaoboshi and the companies. In any case, NEXIM Bank had not lodged any complaint in respect of the loan.
Senator Nwaoboshi was said in this matter to have acquired Guinea House in Apapa, Lagos, for the sum of N805m.(Eight Hundred and Five Million Naira) The EFCC said he reasonably ought to have known that N322m (Three Hundred and Twenty Two Million Naira) out of the purchase sum formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act. The sum of N322m had been transferred to the vendor of the property by order of Suiming Eectricals Limited on behalf of SPON and Golden Touch. The prosecution claimed that this was an offence contrary to sections 15(2)(d)and 18(a)of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, (as amended). The Senator and his firms Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electrical Ltd were prosecuted for money laundering and fraud.
Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi
According to Section 15(2)(d): Any person or body corporate, in or outside Nigeria, who directly or indirectly acquires, uses, retains or takes possession or control of; any fund or property, knowingly or reasonably ought to have known that such fund or property is, or forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act; commits an offence of money laundering.
Section 18 (a): A person who conspires with, aids, abets or counsels any other person to commit an offence under this Act, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to the same punishment as is prescribed for that offence under this Act.
Soon after the trial began in Lagos, the judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, was elevated to the Court of Appeal. The President of the Court of Appeal,Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, gave authorisation for Justice Idris to conclude the case before resuming at the appellate court, and Justice Idris promised to hear the case on a daily basis until it was concluded but the EFCC, despite having called two witnesses, declined the offer, and opted for the case to start afresh before new judge. This was a reversal of the usual situation where it is politicians, rather than prosecutors, who seek to stall proceedings.
In June 2021, he ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove its case and discharged Senator Nwaoboshi.EFCC was dissatisfied with the lower court rulings and filed an appeal. On June 2022, the Court of Appeal in Lagos upheld the appeal,Illegally sentenced Senator Nwaoboshi to seven years imprisonment for money laundering, and ordered the two companies to be wound up.
Senator Nwaoboshi proceeded to the Supreme Court. The elections into the National Assembly were at hand but efforts to obtain bail or have the case disposed of before the elections were unsuccessful. The All Progressives Congress (APC) had to proceed to the election in the absence of its candidate for Delta North Senatorial District.
Justice was finally served on Friday, 7 July 2023 when the Supreme Court gave judgment. The Court held that Senator Nwaoboshi and his two companies, Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electrical Limited, were unjustly and maliciously prosecuted by the EFCC. It upheld the appeal, set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, and ordered the release of Senator Nwaoboshi.
Justices John Okoro, Uwani Aba-Aji and Adamu Jauro agreed with the lead judgment, written by Justice Emmanuel Agim, while Justice Ibrahim Saulawa dissented. So, how did the Court arrive at this decision? There were a number of reasons.
Senator Peter Nwaoboshi
In other words, the Court of Appeal convicted Senator Nwaoboshi and the companies of an offence(diversion of fund) for which they were not tried at the lower court. Upbraiding the Court of Appeal on this, the Supreme Court explained that if a man obtains a loan for establishment of a farm but decides to use part of it to marry a wife, he has committed no known crime. The Court explained that once a loan has been transferred to a loanee, the money becomes the property of the loanee; he becomes a debtor but he, and not the bank, is the owner of the money, and he can legally do whatever he wishes with the money. So, any claim of fraudulent conversion in this regard cannot stand. The arrest, prosecution and conviction of Senator Nwaoboshi in the absence of any crime was against the spirit and letter of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Having explained the reasons for its decision, the Court expressed its displeasure with the EFCC in strong terms. It expressed its disappointment that the EFCC,which had a large body of senior and junior lawyers in its employment and is supported by a battery of senior advocates, could bring this case to court; it was an abuse of process. The Court noted that the initial petition to the EFCC which triggered this prosecution contained 20 allegations, only one of which the EFCC found worthy of pursuing. It was clear, the Court said, that the petitioner had an axe to grind. It advised the EFCC not to allow itself to be used by unscrupulous elements to pursue personal vendetta.
According to Senator Nwaoboshi’s lawyer,Kanu Agabi SAN thanked the Court for fair dispensation of justice but lamented the use of the judicial process to oppress the innocent. Senator Nwaoboshi, he said, was able to get justice because he could afford to reach the apex court; imagine what would have been the plight of the innocent Nigerian who could not afford to get as far as the Supreme Court. This is not the first time that the EFCC has been criticised by the judiciary. In 2021, the Court of Appeal in Abuja accused the EFCC of gross abuse of statutory powers and abusing the fundamental rights of a citizen in an “oppressive, repressive and condemnable” manner. On various occasions over the years since its inception, the EFCC has been urged by human rights groups and politicians to resist being used as a tool of political oppression. It is clear to the discerning Nigerians that Nwaoboshi’s case was used by the EFCC to settle political scores, the aim being to get the Distinguished Senator out of circulation,to pave way for the perpetrators’ electoral success. That is the challenge before us today and that is the reality of Nigerian politics.
Senator Peter Nwaoboshi
“Nwaoboshi’s incarceration will not in any way diminish his relevance, acceptance and winsomeness in the last 2023 general election. Come to think of it what would his opponent used to campaign against him, if not for his illegal imprisonment by his evil political enemies? As far as we are concerned, we still need a ranking senator and that is what will position Anioma nation visibly in the red chamber, he will secure a leadership position soon.” it is quite unfortunate that Delta North sons were involved in the incarceration and illegal imprisonment of an illustrious Anioma son.
“Nwaoboshi will always remain relevant in Delta North politics. He is already a household name and a champion of the Anioma nation. His contribution to the development of the nation cannot be wished away by a non-starter. Today, in Delta politics, Nwaoboshi remains the third tripod known to contemporary Delta politics.”
Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi is a LION! No man can silence his roar!!!
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Chief of Staff to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, Hon Johnson Erijo, has challenged community development unions in the state to justify their corporate existence.
Hon Erijo, while playing host to a delegation of the Aviara Town Development Union, Asaba branch, in his office on Friday, noted that some community development unions were merely in existence for socials at the expense of contributing to community development for which they were founded.
The Chief of Staff maintained that grassroots development should be championed by development unions before the government could come in to complement self help efforts, insisting that any community expecting the government to shoulder the responsibility of providing every social amenity would experience serious set backs
He stated that such unions should also be able to form cooperatives to pool resources for soft loans and financial assistance to needy members, adding that indigent locals with impressive academic records could be assisted to further their education as part of community development.
Hon Erijo restated the commitment of the Oborevwori administration to advancing Delta beyond its present level of development and called on the community development unions to contribute their quota towards actualizing the vision.
The Chief of Staff commended the Asaba branch of the Aviara Town Development Union for bringing together sons and daughters of the community under one umbrella at its monthly meetings to discuss issues affecting the community and proffer solutions.
Hon Erijo assured the delegation that he was holding the position of Chief of Staff in trust for all Deltans and promised to remain a good ambassador of the Aviara community in the discharge of his duties.
The Asaba branch Chairman of the Union, Barr Israel Umuerri, who led the delegation, congratulated Hon Erijo on his appointment, describing him as an illustrious son of Aviara Kingdom, who had impacted positively on the lives of many Indigenes.
He said the Union was a veritable platform for all Indigenes of Aviara resident in Asaba and the environs, pointing out that it had contributed to community development, as well as the well-being of members.
Barr Umuerri pledged the support of the Union for the Oborevwori administration.
