[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Supreme Court has set aside the conviction and sentencing to seven years imprisonment of Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi for offences of fraud and money laundering.

In a lead judgment by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court held that Nwaobishi and the two companies were unjustly and maliciously prosecuted by the EFCC for committing no offences known to the law, which subjected them to a needless criminal trial in relation to civil transactions.

The court set aside the July 1, 2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Lagos, which had reversed their discharge and acquittal by a Federal High Court in Lagos

The apex court, therefore, ordered his immediate release from Ikoyi prisons in Lagos, where he is currently being held.

The supreme court also freed the two companies – Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electrical Ltd – tried with him on a two-count charge brought against them by EFCC.

Recall that EFCC had accused Nwaoboshi and his companies of illegally acquiring a property named Guinea House on Marine Road, in Apapa, Lagos, for N805 million, the property is said to belong to the Delta State Govt.

The anti-graft agency had claimed that part of the money paid for the property was transferred by Suiming Electrical Ltd on behalf of Nwaoboshi and Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd, adding the funds are believed to be proceeds of their illicit activities.

OKOLIE PLEDGES QUALITY REPRESENTATION FOR ANIOCHA/OSHIMILI FED. CONSTITUENCY; ASAGBA OF ASABA, OTHERS GRACE THANKSGIVING

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]ewly inaugurated member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ngozi Lawrence Okolie of Labour Party, has pledged to deliver quality representation to his constituents, even as he has assured the people to expect a better and robust representation in the green chamber of the national assembly.

Hon Ngozi Okolie, who made the pledge while speaking during the National Assembly Inauguration Reception/Thanksgiving service to mark his induction as member representing the constituency, which held at Emmanuel De Saviour Catholic Church, GRA, Asaba, on Sunday, June 25, 2023, declared that he cannot overlook the hand of God in his electoral victory hence he deemed it necessary, just like the biblical story of the ten lepers where only one out of the ten lepers who were healed, came back to thank God for the miracle, to hold the thanksgiving service in commemoration of his victory at the February 25 polls.

Assuring the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of effectively representing their interest at the Federal Legislature, Hon. Okolie emphasized that they made applauded them for making the that they made the right decision to elect him as the first indigene of Oshimili South to represent the Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

He stressed that as a well known grassroots person, he cannot afford to fail them, even as he promised proper engagement with the people in the collective effort to deliver the dividends of democracy to his Constituency and constituents.

Earlier at the thanksgiving service held the Emmanuel De Saviour Catholic Church, Asaba, Reverend Father Peter Mobuogwu in a homily encouraged Christians not to give up hope or entertain fears while facing unfulfilled dreams.

He stated that power and authority come from God and admonished people to learn to humble and hope on God.

According to him “in a democratic setting the power to choose leaders belonged to the people, as was demonstrated in the case of Ngozi Okolie, who had made several unsuccessful attempts in the past to represent his people”.

The Priest therefore urged the federal lawmaker not to take the mandate given to him by the people of Aniocha/Oshimili for granted now that it had pleased God to place him in the National Assembly this time around.

At the reception, which held at Uga Umueze Afadia, in Umuaji quarters, Asaba the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Asagba Prof. Chike Edozien represented by the Ihonor of Asaba/Secretary to the Asagba in Council Chief Patrick Ndili noted that this was the first time somebody from Asaba was going to represent the constituency since 1999.
He prayed for his success and called on him remain a grass root man and accessible as he is known for.

Dignitaries from all walks of life graced the occasion including some members from the ruling PDP and APC coupled with a lot of cultural displays.

Delta North Political watchers will recall that, prior to the election of Hon. Ngozi Lawrence Okolie in 2023, the representation for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, comprising Four LGAS; Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Oshimili North and Oshimili South, at the Federal House of Reps, had been dominated by the the two Aniocha Constituencies, since 1999; Hon. Ned Nwoko and recently, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu both from Aniocha North and Hon. Paschal Nwaoranine Adigwe and Hon. Joan Onyemachi Bielonwu (Mrakpor), from Aniocha South respectively.

Hon. Ngozi Okolie has thus broken the Aniocha jinx by emerging as the first indigene from the Oshimili axis, this time Oshimili South and indeed from Asaba the State capital community/town, to represent the Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Ban on vehicle importation still in place, FG insists

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says the federal government has not lifted the ban on vehicle importation through Seme border.

Reports had posited that the border was now open to vehicle importation.

Hussaini Abdullahi, Customs Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Seme area command, clarified the situation in an interview with NAN on Saturday.

Abdullahi said the government has not made a pronouncement on reopening the border.

He acknowledged that a proposal was written by some freight forwarders to the federal government following an advice from Ademola Adegoroye, the former minister of state for transportation.

He said the former minister had visited the border to inaugurate some projects in February when the freight forwarders complained to him about how the ban had affected them.

He said Adegoroye advised the freight forwarders and members of the border community to put their request in writing.

The customs spokesperson said during a recent visit by Ibrahim Musa, director of road transport in the ministry of transportation, it was confirmed that the letter by the freight forwarders had been received and acted upon — by passing it to a higher authority.

He said no directive had been given on the matter.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari had, in August 2019, shut all land borders as part of efforts to curtail smuggling and boost local production of rice.

On December 6, 2020, Buhari ordered the immediate reopening of four land borders, including Seme in Lagos.

PRESIDENCY: Tinubu still on tour, will arrive Nigeria Tuesday, ahead of Sallah

A source close to the Presidency confirmed this to Channels Television on Sunday, saying the President would spend the Sallah holiday in Lagos, the nation’s commercial hub.

According to the source, an advance team has already been dispatched ahead of the President’s arrival.

On Friday, Tinubu concluded his official trip to Paris, during which he participated in the summit for ‘A New Global Financing Pact’ hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The President used the opportunity of the summit to hold high-profile sideline meetings with fellow heads of state and government, global business leaders, and chief executives of leading multilateral and development finance institutions from around the world.

He was initially scheduled to be back in Abuja Saturday, but proceeded to London, United Kingdom, for a short private visit.

The presidential media aide, Dele Alake, had announced in a statement on Saturday that Tinubu will be back in the country in time for the Eid-el-Kabir festival slated for Wednesday.

“Tinubu, who was initially scheduled to be back in Abuja on Saturday, will now proceed to London, United Kingdom, for a short private visit,” a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, read.

Channels Television had reported how Tinubu concluded his official trip to Paris, France, during which he had “an outstanding participation in the summit for ‘A New Global Financing Pact’ hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.”

Presidency reacts to alleged RMAFC salary increase

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he presidency has said that President Bola Tinubu has not approved any salary increase purportedly emanating from the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Responsibility Commission (RMAFC) of 114 per cent for certain officers.

A statement by Mr Dele Alake, Special Adviser, Special Duties, Communications & Strategy, said that no such proposal had been brought to the president for consideration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there has been a viral story of the purported 114 per cent increase in the salary of the President, Vice President, elected Federal and State political office holders and judicial officers.

“We state without any equivocation that President Bola Tinubu has not approved any salary increase, and no such proposal has been brought before him for consideration.

“While we recognise that it is within the constitutional remit of RMFAC to propose and fix salaries and allowances of political office holders and Judicial Officers, such cannot come to effect until it has equally been considered and approved by the President.

“It is important to note that RMAFC, through its Public Relations Manager, has responded to this fake story being circulated and has already set the record straight.

“However, that this unfounded story gained prominence on social media and in a section of mainstream media, again, brings to the fore the danger fake news poses to the society and our national well-being,” Alake said.

He added that the misinformation was aimed at creating ill-will for the government, adding it was to slow down the upward momentum and goodwill the Tinubu-led administration is currently enjoying among Nigerians.

Alake said that the administration would continue to implement “fast paced, dynamic and progressive policies” for the general good of the country and its citizens.

“It is important to reiterate to journalists, media managers, and members of the public that stories on government activities and policy issues that do not emanate from approved official communication channels should be ignored.

“Media practitioners are enjoined to, at all times, cross-check their stories to ensure accurate reportage, which is the hallmark of responsible journalism,” Alake said.(NAN)
