How Lionel Messi proved a force too powerful for Liverpool

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]iverpool lived with Barcelona and Lionel Messi for 75 minutes of this Champions League semi-final first leg – then discovered there is a force that is simply too powerful to resist.

Jurgen Klopp’s side may have trailed to Liverpool old boy Luis Suarez’s first-half goal, but in all other aspects they were in control and looking like taking a very presentable result back to Anfield next week.

Indeed, a Liverpool equaliser looked a more likely outcome than further Barcelona additions as they controlled possession in the arena where it is king and pushed their opponents back into their own territory.

And then it happened.

The magic that Messi has been sprinkling on Barcelona and the entire sport for more than a decade transformed this tie in the space of those final 15 minutes. Liverpool, for all their good work, now face a mountainous task if they are to reach their second Champions League Final.

Messi’s first and Barcelona’s second may have been a bundled mess after Suarez had hit the bar, but the goal that probably pushes this tie beyond Liverpool was perfection in every single respect.

It was a free-kick curved into the only place Alisson could not reach from in excess of 30 yards, Messi’s 600th goal for Barcelona exactly 14 years to the day since he scored his first.

Few players could even contemplate what Messi did let alone accomplish it – and there you have the difference between the two teams.

After lengthy contemplation, some pointed a finger in Alisson’s direction but this is a ridiculous assertion. This was artistic sporting perfection and any suggestion the Brazilian was somehow at fault was ludicrous.

Liverpool did not have Messi and, more significantly, the world-class marksman they possess themselves had a rare off night as Klopp’s normally ruthless and clinical side found the finishing touch had deserted them.

Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have fuelled Liverpool’s magnificent toe-to-toe Premier League title battle with Manchester City, but they both missed wonderful chances to secure a priceless away goal.

Messi has scored 26 Champions League goals against English clubs – 14 more than any other player

Of course there will be talk of famous comebacks – and Liverpool always travel with hope at Anfield – but the danger lurks in the fact if Barcelona score one (and who would seriously bet against them with Messi and Suarez to call on?), they would need five.

Liverpool got so many things right – although a gung-ho attitude could have seen them punished even further in the closing stages – and they’re probably in a state of shock wondering what happened to them.

The answer is simple: Lionel Messi happened to them.

They are not the first and will not be the last, and the nightmare is they will have to go through it all again next week.

The irony was that Messi was on the margins for those 75 minutes, little flashes but often crowded out by Liverpool’s strength in numbers.

Not forever though, because he rarely is and this season Messi – as Manchester United found out in the last 16 – has made it his personal mission to return the Champions League trophy to Barcelona.

Messi, speaking in August after assuming the captaincy, revealed it was Barcelona’s intention to win the Champions League this season and in his pre-match media briefing Klopp said: “That sounded already like a threat to me.”

This was a threat fulfilled and inflicted on Liverpool.

Liverpool will not give this tie away and the horrendous botch Ousmane Dembele made of an open goal with the final kick of the game offers a sliver of hope, but odds against are huge.

Barcelona toiled for much of the second half but the more they toiled, the more they tried to get Messi into the game – and the man touched by greatness was there for them again.

Liverpool will look back on Mane hoisting a simple chance over the bar from Jordan Henderson in the first half, at Salah striking a post late on when it seemed easier to score after substitute Roberto Firmino had seen a shot scrambled off the line.

Where Liverpool were wasteful Barcelona were clinical. And even a team under pressure, as Barcelona were for much of the second half, still has the safety net one of the greatest players the game has ever known can provide.

Klopp gambled in playing Joe Gomez ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, a ploy not entirely successful as the young defender struggled, perfectly understandably as he is only just back from a broken leg, against Barcelona’s attacking variation.

Liverpool celebrating winning in Istanbul
Liverpool came back from three goals down at half-time to beat AC Milan in the final of the Champions League in 2005

It leaves Liverpool with their backs against the wall at Anfield.

Is there anything that offers them belief they can somehow turn this around?

Liverpool will certainly feel they can score goals against this Barcelona defence. They had their opportunities here but contrived to waste every one.

Of course, Anfield will be a factor but that magnificent Messi free-kick has given Barcelona a massive advantage.

And for all the hope and optimism that throbs at Anfield on occasions such as we will witness in the second leg, Barcelona have Messi.

Messi is on a Champions League mission. And the evidence in the Nou Camp suggests he is in no mood to be denied.

Buhari Vs Atiku: Courts Not Guided By Social Media Videos, Keyamo Tells Nigerians

Festus Keyamo (SAN)

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Director, Strategic Communications of President Buhari’s 2019 presidential campaign and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo, has said that the videos of some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, expressing the intention of the commission to electronically transmit the 2019 presidential election results are only circulated for entertainment.

Keyamo, who was Director, Strategic Communications of President Buhari’s 2019 presidential campaign, said such procedure is neither contained in the Electoral Act nor in INEC’s Guidelines.

Keyamo, who took to his twitter handle to “guide Nigerians” on the issue, said the Courts are not guided by such videos. Recall that some videos circulating the social media purportedly showed how the February 23, 2019 presidential election was rigged.

The defeated Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar had since approached the election tribunal, claiming that some results purportedly obtained from the INEC server showed that Atiku actually scored a total of 18,356,732 votes, and Buhari 16,741,430 votes, whereas, the All Progressives Congress’ Muhammadu Buhari, was declared winner by the INEC with 15,191,847 votes, as against Atiku’s 11,262,978 votes.

Keyamo said: “Without referring to any particular pending Election Petition, there’s a need to generally guide Nigerians not to gullibly fall for the fantasy created by any video circulating where INEC official(s) spoke of INEC’s plan to electronically transmit results before the elections.

“The video(s) of some INEC official(s) expressing intention to electronically transmit results are only circulated for entertainment. That procedure is neither contained in the Electoral Act nor in INEC’s Guidelines. Courts are only guided by these documents and not such videos.

“Also, what you plan to do may be different from what you actually did. Assuming INEC planned to transmit electronically, the moment it said after the election that it did not do so, the matter ends there, especially as the Electoral Act and the guidelines do not allow it to do so.

“In anticipation of the electronic transmission, some crooks concocted fictitious results and perhaps in connivance with certain INEC insiders (or by hacking) tried to upload those results into the server. The fact that electronic transmission didn’t happen destroyed their plan

“The irony is that the real cheats are the ones struggling to create a narrative that they were cheated; the real crooks are the ones struggling to convince everyone that the system is crooked; those who actually planned to steal the people’s mandate are the ones crying foul.

“The noise about electronic transmission of INEC results is akin to a student who wants to cheat in an exam and enters the hall with prepared answers, not noticing that the set questions are not exactly framed as expected.

“So, when he’s later told he failed, he says it’s impossible!”

APC lost in South East because of Serving ministers, party leaders – Orji Kalu

Orji Uzor-Kalu

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]enator -Elect Chief Orji Kalu has called for investigation into the alleged anti-party activities on some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East before and during the 2019 general elections. Kalu made the call on Saturday in Enugu during the zonal stakeholders’ meeting of the party.

The former governor said that he had it on good authority that some party chieftains in the zone sabotaged genuine efforts of the party by aligning with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He called on the leadership of the party in the zone to immediately raise a committee to investigate the allegations.

“One of the leaders of the party outside this zone told me that some of our chieftains including serving ministers negotiated with PDP governors to allow our party 25 per cent of vote cast at the polls. “We have to fish out the people that said our party cannot afford 25 per cent vote for President Muhammadu Buhari and punish them.

“They sabotaged us. We cannot be working for the party and look like fools. Some of us worked but a few went to Abuja to say we cannot deliver,” he said.

Kalu said that such circumstance affected the performance of the party in the zone in the last election. “There is no way the APC could not have won states like Abia and others but some of our leaders did this. We have to reveal and suspend them,” Kalu said.

Also speaking, Sen. Chris Adighije, said that though the forces against the APC during the poll in the zone was enormous but they made great achievements through hard work.

“The forces were against us in Abia State but we won seats in the National and State Assemblies. If some people negotiated for 25 per cent on behalf of the party, we have to fight back,” Adighije said.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu described the performance of the party in the zone during the polls as a `great improvement’ from the 2015 scenario.

Onu, who is the leader of the South East APC Caucus, said that the performance might have been below expectations. The minister commended the leadership of the party in the zone for convening the meeting, adding, “if we can come together, we can surprise Nigerians as they believe we cannot work together.

“Let us unite so that those forces outside with the intention of dividing us will not succeed.

“I see a very bright future for Ndigbo if we can unite,” Onu said.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, the APC National Vice Chairman, South East, Mr Emma Eneukwu, described the just concluded polls as a difficult one for the party in the zone.

Eneukwu said that their opponents tried to incapacitate them “but we came out victorious. “We are proud of our members that won various elective positions and it would have been a shame if they could not win,” he said.

The vice chairman said that some leaders of the party outside of the zone were fighting to infiltrate and cause division and confusion in the zone. He called on members of the party to work as one, adding that the meeting was aimed at fostering unity in the zone.

Grassroots Publishers reports that participants at the meeting supported the investigation of the alleged sabotage by some party chieftains.

The meeting then went into a closed-door interaction and as at the time of filing this report, the decision whether or not to set up the investigation has not been communicated to the press

JAMB set to Release UTME Results ‘Anytime Next Week’

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has told all candidates who sat for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination that they will be able to view their results anytime from April 29. The 2019 UTME was conducted from April 11 to April 18, and over 1.8 million candidates registered for it.

Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Board’s Head of Media and Publicity, said this in Abuja on Saturday. “We are still screening but hopefully, anytime next week, the results will be ready,” he said. “Normally, results are expected to be out within 24 to 48 hours as obtained in previous examinations held in 2017 and 2018.

“However, the board does not want this to be business as usual. Hence the programmed delay, which is part of its deliberate effort to properly scrutinize, identify and address all forms of examination malpractice. The board will continue to act decisively with regards to any irregularity discovered even after results are released.”

JAMB said that effective from when it would officially release the results, all candidates can simply send RESULT, via SMS, to 55019 using the same number that was used for registration. The result, it said, would be replied as an SMS shortly after.
This process, the board explained, was simplified to eliminate exploitation by business centres and cyber cafés who often take advantage of candidates. JAMB also urged candidates to ignore all messages in circulation on how to check the results, sauing “they were all products of deceit”.

The Senate President, on April 10th 2019, accepted the nomination of the Commission, while also expressing his appreciation to the IHRC for his nomination.

POLICE ARREST 26 MEMBERS OF DREADED AWAWA CULT GANG IN AGEGE AREA

Awawa cult gang

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit over the weekend arrested 26 dreaded Awawa cult gang in Agege and 64 miscreants at Oshodi.

The Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi disclosed that these  26 dreaded ‘Awawa’ cult gang were arrested during an over-night enforcement operations tagged ‘Operation Restore Sanity to Lagos’ carried out around ‘Isale-oja’, ‘Funmilayo’, ‘ile-pako at Amoo’, ‘Orile by canal’, ‘Papa-Ashafa’, ‘Dopemu’ and ‘Old Oko-oba’ in Agege.

The Chairman disclosed further that criminal activities perpetrated by these various cult groups particularly the dreaded ‘Awawa’ cult gang have become a serious threat to lives of residents and innocent members of the public around the area. He stated that it was an eye-sore seeing these miscreants and cultists robbing, raping and freely smoking Indian hemp with underage boys and girls during day time and at night.

CSP Egbeyemi stated further that another 64 miscreants and hoodlums were arrested during over-night raid around Oshodi.  The Chairman said dangerous weapons and substance suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from these 64 miscreants which include 3 female teenagers.

These miscreants and hoodlums were those attacking/breaking motorists windscreen and disturbing innocent members of the public by dispossessing them of their valuables such as phones, wallets, and jewellery around Oshodi.

“It is disheartening that most parents have abdicated their responsibility towards their children as youths are now found to be deeply involved in gangsterism”

“Honestly, most of the violent crime committed across the State were perpetrated by youths who lack parental care and joined cultism to avoid being intimidated by their peers”

He said that ‘Operation Restore Sanity to Lagos’ would be a continuous exercise and extended to every other area known to be inhabited by these undesirable elements across the State.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police CP Zubairu Muazu has however directed that all those arrested be charged to court for prosecution.

In a related development, the Agency dislodged more than 1500 illegal traders  and impounded 96 motorcycles for plying restricted routes around Igando. They were dislodged by the Agency to pave ways for the free flow of traffic as there were serious complaints by residents and motorists about the newly constructed roads being taken over by activities of these illegal traders.

“Strategically, this unusual and very risky trading practice has led to the death of some traders especially those who were not quick enough to depart the scene of reckless drivers”

CSP Egbeyemi maintained that in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Laws, it was completely unlawful for anyone to hawk,  buy or sell goods on railway tracks, road-setbacks, walk-ways and drainage alignment across the State

Multi-National cabal Companies Sponsors Rice Smuggling across borders … As Seme Customs Tighten Up Security

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]hose who think that  smuggling of foreign parboiled rice  into the country will stop  with  the repeated confiscation of impounded Consignments  by the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, across the country, particular, Federal Operations Unit , FOU, and Land Border Stations, would be disappointed.

This is  because of the  alleged failed government policies, wrong Trade Agreements, poor enforcement and Conspiracy  of  some of the Law enforcement agencies  with the smugglers. More worrisome  was the not well  demarcated common  boundaries  between  Nigeria  and the  other  neighbouring countries such as Republic of Benin, Cameroon,  Chad and Niger, which makes the Borders porous.

From the south west, south -south, north west, north central to north east, the story is the same: porous Borders.  Note that importers  who make wrong declaration at the seaports  to reduce  the amount of duty that ought to be paid on the Consignment  in into the Federation Account  are also involving in an ”act of smuggling.

The question on the lips  of most people Is:  who are those responsible for this business who would never back out despite the millions of dollars lost monthly to government through the continued seizures of the prohibited item by the  NCS formations across the country?

From our Investigation it shows that the multi-national  Companies rice importers who are the oversea producers and  their local  distributors at the Borders   are the real smugglers of  the foreign parboiled rice  cargo into the country. According to a source, they are all over the nooks and crannies of the Border.  The multi-national Companies,  the source disclosed,  provide these foreign rice cargoes at cheap rates to entice the distributors to buy, who in turn smuggle it into the country through various unapproved routes to make quick profit .

John Isemede,  a United Nation’s Industrial Development  Organisation, UNIDO,  Consultant, reportedly said the problem of rice smuggling into the country  has been made worse because of the country’s ”culture of importation  which has not  allowed  the development of  proper forex regime”.  He noted that the banks have not helped matters because of the preference to advance loans to importers against the the demand of manufacturers.

”When you go to the bank  to seek for loans to go into manufacturing for export , nobody would look at you  or think of granting   you the loan” as the country is well prepared for imports”, he said. It is not surprising why it is on a single window list.

The neighbouring countries  may not  have helped the Nigeria situation as they appear to be benefiting from the foreign rice imports through their respective  countries which in turn  are smuggled into the Nigeria market. Take for instance, the  Value Added Tax, VAT, regime  which, is five percent in Nigeria  while that of Republic of Benin is 18 percent, an indication that they are raking in millions of dollar annually, from rice imports alone and therefore would not want to lose the market because of the country’s stringent economic policies banning the importation of foreign rice through the land Borders.

The Beninois government may have made the Cotonou  port to be more  attractive for the multinational  Companies rice importers  as  it takes   only about 24 hours  for an importer to get his Consignment out of the port as against three days to one week in a Nigeria port.

This may have informed the reason  why the multi-national rice importers , who have the wherewithal    to rush to Cotonou port and other ports in the West African sub-region to take delivery of their cargoes to avoid the delays  and the demurrage  paid at the Nigerian ports.

Aggrieved  traders and genuine importers , say the problem of  rice smuggling into the country has worsened in the recent time because  of wrong government policies.   They cited   the  tariff increase on imported rice by the government to discourage  smuggling of the product, described as a failure as it has not been effective. Insiders disclosed that for the past one year , no foreign vessel   has discharged foreign parboiled rice in any Nigeria port because of the high tariff, described as killing.

It was learnt that importers who had  managed  to obtain Letters of Credit, LC, from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN,  to buy the items were said to have found it difficult  to pay the 110 percent duties . Recall that former President  Goodluck Jonathan in 2012,  in a bid to reduce rice importation, on the advice of the National Economic Council, NEC,   had increased  the levy on rice par tonne,    from 20 percent to 100 percent but the duty still remained at 20 percent.  At present” rice smuggling is boosting the Beninois economy and the economy of other countries in the West African sub-region. but bleeding the Nigerian economy to death”, maritime analysts had said.

Only recently, Mohammed Abubakar,  Chairman, Rice Processors Association  of Nigeria, RIPAN,  has raised alarm over  continued smuggling of rice into the country , accusing the Customs, under the close watch of Hammed Ali, a retired Colonel  and Comptroller General, NCS,  of not leaving up to expectation in combating  smuggling of rice into the country. Abubakar disclosed that in the recent months  over 20 million bags of 50 Kg foreign rice had been  smuggled into the country through the country’s  porous Borders.

RIPAN leadership who are no longer finding the situation funny were said to have  met several times  in the last one month  with Ali, the Customs Comptroller General , over the rising  spate of smuggled  rice through the country’s unapproved Borders into the country  and to know Customs immediate  plan to stop the trend .

They were said to have earlier suggested  to Buhari,  the Katsina state born Nigerian President   on the need  to draft the Economic  and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  operatives into the anti-smuggling war as it is affecting local production because of the gross ineffectiveness of Customs anti-smuggling  officers. They had   averred that  if the problem is not solved  quickly ”it could lead to national food emergency” in the country.

The local   paddy rice  processors may  have thrown  a challenge to the  customs   Area comptrollers at the Border Commands  and the FOUs , across the country that they have  tightened up security at the ports and Borders to ensure that no foreign bag of rice enters the country illegally ..

Mohammed Uba Garba, the Customs  comptroller at Seme Command , who is a stickler to implementation of government fiscal policies  and his anti-smuggling officers were said to have been alive to their duties by policing the Borders and the Creeks within its area of jurisdiction.  s Rice smugglers who could not stand the superior fire of the officers in the area were said to have relocated to Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo,  Osun, Cross River and the northern states to carry out their nefarious trade.

Between  January and February, the Seme  Command alone,  had made a mindboggling seizures of 5,383  ”50”Kg bags of foreign rice, equivalent of nine trailer loads,  with a Duty Paid Value of about N97 million. Those who have escaped from Seme Border axis  to operate from The Ogun and Oyo axis were said to  have fallen into the waiting hands of  Riks Lura, a Chief Superintendent f Customs , led FOU, Zone A, Lagos Roving Team  and the Command Strike Force,  led by B. Ahmed, a Customs Superintendent and the Head quarters strike Force, HSF, Zonal office officers, led by Salisu Shuaibu , an Assistant Comptroller and the  Zonal Commander and his officers

. Lura, who was said to have been discovered  at FOU, Zone C, by Garba, the current  Area Comptroller of Seme Command, may have carved his teeth to  face rice smugglers squarely at Ikan  axis in Bakasi , local government  Area of Cross River state, where his team seized trucks load of rice in 2014, amidst threats from Pirates and the smugglers to frustrate their plan to take the impounded rice to Government warehouse, Calabar

. the Customs Chief Superintendent, who led the operation that involve both the Army and the Navy was said to have successfully taken the  items to Calabar without any exchange of bullets with the smugglers. He is still repeating the same  feat with his team at FOU, Zone A. The performance of the team  , according to sources, was said to have  shored up the Command foreign rice seizures  in the Ogun and Oyo axis of the south western part of the country.

Mohammed Aliyu, the Command Area Comptroller confirmed that the Command  impounded  13,680 of 50 Kg bags of foreign parboiled rice, equivalent of about 20 trucks load of rice . The massive rice seizures, across the Borders in the six western states under the control of the FOU, Zone A, and the Seme Command at the Seme and Owode axis , should clearly , tell RIPAN , members that the  rice smugglers have not realy overwhelmed the Customs anti-smuggling officers in the region.
