PROF. AZINGE: REDEFINING ROYALTY AND TRANSFORMATION IN ASABA

By: Ike Philip Abiagom
When Obi (Professor) Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, OON, SAN, ascended the ancient and revered throne as the 14th Asagba of Asaba in October 2024, the air in Delta State’s capital city was charged with renewed hope. For many Asaba indigenes, his coronation was not just the installation of a new monarch, but the dawn of a new era — one that promises to blend tradition, intellect, and visionary leadership.

A distinguished legal scholar, teacher, and nation-builder, Prof. Azinge’s journey to the throne embodies excellence, service, and the power of purpose. His impressive career spans decades of academic brilliance, national contribution, and humanitarian service — attributes that have now found deeper expression in his reign as Asaba’s cultural and spiritual leader.
A ROYALTY ROOTED IN INTELLECT AND SERVICE

Prof. Azinge is not your conventional monarch. Before donning the royal beads, he had already etched his name in Nigeria’s intellectual and legal history. With a Law degree from the University of Lagos, an LL.M in Comparative Constitutional and Shipping Law from the University of London, and a Ph.D. focusing on Electoral Laws in Nigeria, his academic journey reflected an unwavering commitment to excellence.
He rose through the ranks to become Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) between 2009 and 2014 — a tenure marked by groundbreaking reforms in legal education, policy research, and academic modernization. Under his leadership, NIALS became a powerhouse for advanced jurisprudential thought in Nigeria and across Africa.
His contributions to law and education earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), and his elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2006.
Yet, behind the academic laurels lies a man deeply committed to human development. Through his Sojourners Medicate Foundation, Prof. Azinge has supported scholarships, medical outreach, and community assistance programs — long before destiny called him to serve as Asagba.
A MODERN KING WITH A VISION
From the first day of his reign, Prof. Azinge has made it clear that his vision for Asaba goes beyond preserving customs; it is about building a stronger, more prosperous capital city where tradition and progress coexist harmoniously.
Speaking during his coronation, the monarch declared, “We must make Asaba the capital city of our dreams — a city that upholds its cultural identity while embracing development.”
That statement reflects the foundation of his transformative agenda — a blueprint that seeks to position Asaba not only as a capital of political power but also as a beacon of culture, education, and economic growth in Southern Nigeria.
HERITAGE, UNITY, AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

One of the hallmarks of Prof. Azinge’s reign so far has been his inclusive and unifying approach. Recognizing Asaba’s diverse quarters and complex social history, he has emphasized the need for unity, fairness, and transparency in traditional governance.
He has fostered renewed dialogue among traditional chiefs, youths, and women’s groups, encouraging all segments of society to contribute ideas for Asaba’s progress. His open-door policy — a sharp contrast to the often-distant image of traditional institutions — has earned him widespread admiration.
In the area of cultural preservation, the Asagba has initiated efforts to document Asaba’s oral traditions and historical archives, ensuring future generations inherit both knowledge and pride in their identity. Plans are also underway for a Cultural Heritage Centre that will serve as a museum, research hub, and cultural tourism site.
DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIPS AND INSTITUTIONAL GROWTH
As the capital of Delta State, Asaba’s development requires vision and collaboration. Prof. Azinge has already begun engaging with government agencies, academic institutions, and investors to bring new opportunities to the city. He has publicly committed to working closely with the Delta State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria to attract new institutions, promote education, and improve infrastructure.
Through his wide professional network — from the legal community to international academic circles — he is leveraging influence to position Asaba as a centre of excellence in learning, tourism, and cultural diplomacy.
In his words:
“Asaba must be more than an administrative capital. It should be a place of innovation, discipline, and development that inspires all Deltans.”

FOCUS ON YOUTH AND SOCIAL WELFARE

Prof. Azinge understands that the true wealth of any community lies in its youth. His reign has placed special emphasis on empowering young people through education, skills acquisition, and mentorship.
Through planned partnerships with local schools and tertiary institutions, the palace aims to promote STEM education, scholarship programs, and vocational training for youths in Asaba and beyond. He has also encouraged community-driven initiatives to tackle social challenges like unemployment and moral decay.
His message to the younger generation remains clear: “You are the future of Asaba; your creativity and discipline will shape our destiny.”

A LEGACY IN MOTION

Barely a year into his reign, Prof. Azinge has already begun redefining what modern traditional leadership can look like — visionary, scholarly, and people-focused. His leadership blends the grace of tradition with the precision of intellect, inspiring confidence that Asaba’s best days lie ahead.

Under his guidance, the ancient kingdom is witnessing a cultural renaissance — one that cherishes its heritage while boldly embracing innovation, governance, and development.

As Asaba continues to grow as the heart of Delta State, Prof. Azinge’s reign stands as a testament to how enlightened leadership can bridge the past and the future — ensuring that culture becomes a vehicle for progress, not a relic of nostalgia.
From the classroom to the courtroom, and now to the royal throne, Prof. Epiphany Azinge’s life reflects service at its highest form. As he leads the Asaba Kingdom into a new era, his reign symbolizes a fusion of wisdom, modernity, and purpose — the hallmarks of a truly transformational monarch.
Indeed, under the Asagba’s steady hand, Asaba is not just preserving its glory — it is rising to a new dawn.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE: HOW HON. FRANK ESENWAH IS TRANSFORMING EDUCATION IN OSHIMILI NORTH

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

In just over two years as the member representing Oshimili North Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Frank Esenwah has redefined what true grassroots representation means — especially in the area of education.

From Ebu to Illah, Ugbolu to Akwukwu-Igbo, Atuma-Iga to Ukala, Okpanam, and Ibusa, his vision for a better future for children across the constituency has translated into concrete actions and visible results.

Beyond providing educational scholarships and facilitating numerous admissions into tertiary institutions, Hon. Esenwah has distributed thousands of educational materials to pupils in public primary and secondary schools across all communities — ensuring that no child is left behind in the pursuit of learning.

Recognizing that quality education requires more than just books and teachers, the lawmaker has also invested heavily in infrastructure renewal. Among his notable projects are:

Renovation of a six-classroom block with office at New Era Primary School, Okpanam

Renovation of a four-classroom block with offices and construction of a prototype four-pupil toilet at Omu Girls Primary School, Ibusa

Renovation of a six-classroom block with offices at Omorka Model Primary School, Illah

These interventions have provided pupils and teachers with safer, cleaner, and more conducive environments for learning, inspiring renewed confidence in public education within the constituency.

For Hon. Esenwah, education remains the foundation of sustainable development and a top priority in his legislative agenda. His tireless efforts continue to uplift the academic standards of Oshimili North and position the constituency as a model of progressive representation in Delta State.

“Our investment in education is an investment in the future. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed,” Hon. Esenwah emphasized during one of his school project inspections.

As the people of Oshimili North celebrate these achievements, many believe that Hon. Esenwah’s unwavering commitment to education is setting a benchmark for purposeful leadership and transformative governance in Delta State.

DELTA’S OPEN GRAZING LAW IN LIMBO: FARMERS IN IGBUZO AND OTHER COMMUNITIES CRY OUT AS HERDSMEN OPERATE WITH IMPUNITY

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Four years after the Delta State House of Assembly passed the Anti-Open Grazing and Livestock Management Law to curb herders’ invasion of farmlands, farmers in Igbuzo town in Oshimili North Local Government Area and other communities across the state are still living in fear.
Despite the legislation, herdsmen continue to graze cattle openly, destroying crops and threatening rural livelihoods—while authorities appear unable or unwilling to enforce the law.

In Igbuzo, a once-thriving agricultural town in Oshimili North Local Government Area, local farmers say the situation has worsened in recent months. Vast farmlands have been overrun by cattle, with cassava, yam, maize, and vegetable crops eaten or trampled by herds.
“We have the law, but no enforcement,” laments Mrs. Ifeoma Nwabuokei, a widow from Umueze -Igbuzo who lost her three-acre cassava farm to cattle incursions. “When we report, they tell us to calm down. Yet the herders boast openly that no one can touch them.”
Community sources allege that political interference and silence from traditional authorities have emboldened the herders. Some farmers allegedly accuse certain powerful individuals of maintaining informal ties with Fulani groups in exchange for favors and livestock gifts, thereby compromising enforcement.
“The herders move freely because they feel protected by the mighty. The victims are the poor farmers who feed the town.”
The Delta State Anti-Open Grazing Law was enacted to prevent unrestricted movement of cattle and promote ranching as a modern alternative. It prohibits open grazing, night grazing, and cattle movement on foot, prescribing fines, imprisonment, and confiscation of livestock for offenders.
However, investigations reveal that since the law came into effect, implementation has been largely symbolic.
In 2023, the state government announced the creation of 45 Livestock Management Operatives to enforce compliance. Yet, across many local councils—including Oshimili North, Ukwuani, and Ughelli North—there have been no reported prosecutions.
Experts attribute this failure to weak coordination between the state’s livestock enforcement unit and federal security agencies.
A senior official in the Ministry of Agriculture, who spoke on condition of anonymity, admitted that enforcement has been “slow and uneven” due to overlapping responsibilities between state and federal authorities.
“Policing remains under federal control,” the source explained. “Even when we arrest offenders, we rely on police officers who often release them quietly. That frustrates our efforts.”

Critics say selective enforcement and lack of political will are major obstacles.
While the law is on paper, implementation is often hindered by political considerations, especially where powerful figures maintain alliances with herder groups.

Civil rights activist, Comrade Henry Eze, accused local authorities of “deliberate sabotage.”
“There is no shortage of laws in Delta State—only a shortage of courage. What we see is complicity wrapped in silence,” he said.
In August 2025, women in Udu and Aniocha areas staged protests, demanding enforcement of the law and protection of farmlands. Their message echoed the frustrations of farmers in Igbuzo, Ebu, and Akwukwu-Igbo are currently facing daily, where herdsmen reportedly graze with impunity.
Security analysts warn that the government’s failure to enforce the anti-open grazing law could trigger rural unrest.
“Every time farmers lose their livelihood without justice, resentment builds up,” said a retired police officer familiar with community policing in Delta North. “That’s how conflicts escalate into violence.”
Residents are now calling on our amiable  Governor Sheriff Oborevwori who was our Speaker when this law was passed to take decisive action by empowering the Livestock Management Committee, strengthening local enforcement teams, and holding negligent officials accountable.
As one Igbuzo farmer put it:
“The law is good, but a law that is not enforced is as useless as no law at all.”
Until decisive action is taken, the anti-open grazing law risks becoming yet another paper tiger—a reminder of how good policies die in the hands of weak implementation and compromised leadership.

VEBRON CARRE SCHOLARSHIP BOARD BEGINS SELECTION OF OUTSTANDING STUDENTS IN IGBUZO SCHOOLS

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

In a renewed commitment to promoting academic excellence and supporting educational development in Igbuzo, the Vebron Carre Scholarship Board, under the distinguished leadership of Onowu Austine Onianwa, has commenced the process of selecting outstanding students from four secondary schools in the community for this year’s scholarship awards.

The initiative, which forms part of the organization’s broader mission to uplift education standards in Igbuzo, aims to identify and reward the most deserving and academically gifted students, providing them with the financial assistance and encouragement needed to pursue their studies without interruption.

Chief Onianwa, while addressing representatives of the beneficiary schools, reiterated the Board’s commitment to fairness and transparency in the selection process. He emphasized that the scholarships are strictly merit-based and intended to inspire students to strive for academic excellence and moral discipline.

“Education remains the most powerful tool for community transformation,” Chief Onianwa stated. “Through this scholarship scheme, Vebron Carre seeks to nurture young minds who will one day become responsible leaders and ambassadors of Igbuzo both at home and abroad.”
The four schools involved in the selection exercise include:

Ibusa Mixed Secondary School,

Ibusa Girls Secondary School

St. Thomas’ College, and

Omu Boys Secondary School

According to the Board, evaluation will be based on students’ academic performance, discipline, and participation in extracurricular activities. School principals and teachers are expected to play key roles in nominating and verifying qualified candidates.

Representatives of the schools expressed appreciation to the Vebron Carre Scholarship Board for its consistent support and contribution to the growth of education in Igbuzo. Many noted that the scholarship program has become a source of hope and motivation for students, especially those from low-income families.
“In an era where many bright students drop out due to financial hardship, initiatives like this restore faith in the power of community and shared progress,” one of the principals remarked.

The Vebron Carre Scholarship Scheme, established by the USA-based philanthropic organization Vebron Carre Foundation, has over the years sponsored numerous students through secondary and tertiary education. The foundation, Co-founded by Obi Dr. Henry Chukwuma Ajudua-1 (President) and Obi Dr. Mrs. Vivian Ajudua (Managing Director), continues to demonstrate a deep commitment to improving education and youth development in Igbuzo and beyond.

The scholarship board assured that successful beneficiaries will be publicly announced after the completion of the evaluation process, with a formal presentation ceremony to follow.

“Our goal is not just to fund education, but to build future leaders,” Chief Onianwa added. “Every child deserves a chance to dream and succeed.”

IBUSA MIXED SECONDARY SCHOOL CRIES OUT FOR HELP: CALLS ON GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY TO INTERVENE

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Mrs Rose Ezewu
Honourable Commissioner for Secondary Education

The once-vibrant Ibusa Mixed Secondary School in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State is now in urgent need of help. The school, which has served as a foundation for countless students across Igbuzo and neighbouring communities, is facing serious infrastructural and academic challenges that threaten its continued existence.

According to Newsbreeze findings, the school has been unable to secure WAEC accreditation due to poor facilities, particularly the absence of well-equipped science laboratories and inadequate fencing separating the primary and secondary sections.

Newsbreeze, described the situation as “deeply worrying,” stressing that teachers and students are doing their best under very difficult conditions.

“The School laboratories are empty, and this has prevented WAEC from granting the School accreditation for many years now.

“The classrooms need furniture, some students are sitting on bare floor(Blocks), though they were given 100 sets of chairs last month by Isunambogu Social Club, an Indigenous Igbuzo social Club does not still solve the furniture problem as most students are still sitting on blocks, the school perimeter fence has collapsed, and there is no solid school gate to secure the compound. We are appealing to the government, well-meaning individuals, and Igbuzo indigenes to come to their aid as Education is suffering in Igbuzo.”

The major needs of the school include:

Fencing off the primary section from the secondary school.

Equipping the science laboratories with necessary materials for WAEC accreditation.

Repairing the dilapidated perimeter fence.

Installing a solid school gate for proper security.

Providing furniture for students and staff.

Mr Emma Amatokwu aka Kwasa echoed the same concerns, noting that the poor state of infrastructure has discouraged learning and lowered enrollment.

“This school once produced some of the best students in the local government, but today, our children learn under leaking roofs and broken chairs,” Mr. Amatokwu lamented. “If urgent attention is not given, the future of many bright children will be at risk. We are appealing to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and our local leaders to intervene quickly.”

Parents and community stakeholders have joined the call, urging the Delta State Government, Oshimili North Local Government Council, and philanthropic individuals to take immediate action.

Restoring Ibusa Mixed Secondary School, they said, is not just about fixing buildings — it is about preserving the dreams of young students who depend on education as their pathway to a better future.

PASTOR IDOWU OKEZE DONATES STATE-OF-THE-ART LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS TO SECONDARY SCHOOL IN IGBUZO

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

In what has been described as an act of uncommon generosity and vision, Pastor Idowu Daniel Okeze, Ukpechukwu Igbuzo — a man renowned for his compassion, humility, and unwavering commitment to community development — has once again written his name in gold by donating top-tier laboratory equipment to St. Thomas College in Igbuzo, Delta State.

The donation, which includes modern biology, chemistry, and physics apparatuses, will completely transformed the school’s science laboratory into one of the best-equipped in the region. Teachers and students will not contain their excitement as they walked into the newly upgraded facility, marveling at the gleaming microscopes, precision measuring tools, chemical sets, and digital lab instruments that now adorn the benches.

The philanthropist, who has consistently invested in education, healthcare, and community welfare, expressed hope that the new laboratory state of Art would ignite scientific curiosity and inspire a new generation of innovators from Igbuzo.

In appreciation, Mr Emma Amatokwu aka Kwasa described Pastor Okeze’s intervention as “a divine blessing at a time when most schools struggle with inadequate facilities. ”he noted that the gesture would not only improve academic performance but also encourage students to pursue careers in medicine, engineering, and research. He commended Pastor Okeze for his unwavering love for humanity, describing him as “a man who lives for others.” He praised his rare humility and consistency in giving back without seeking applause or political gain.
“What Pastor Okeze has done goes beyond donation — it’s an investment in the minds and future of our children. He has shown that real wealth is measured not by what you keep, but by what you give.”

For the students of Igbuzo, this is more than just a donation — it is a spark of hope, a reminder that dreams are valid, and that there are still men and women who care deeply about the future of their community.

ACNPN Condemn Suspension of Ogwashi-Uku Polytechnic Rector and Bursar

By : Precious Erugo

Association of Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria(ACNPN), have strongly condemned the recent suspension of the institution’s Rector and Bursar by the Delta State House of Assembly, describing the action as hasty, unfair, and detrimental to the smooth running of the school.

The suspension, announced earlier this week, has generated mixed reactions across the state, with the student community expressing deep concern over what they termed “politically motivated interference” in the administration of the polytechnic.
In a statement jointly signed by the Association of Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria(ACNPN) President, Comrade Ike Philip Abiagom, and Secretary, Comrade Alaska Ekele, the Community Publishers called on the State Assembly to reconsider its decision and allow due process to take its course.

According to them, the Rector and Bursar have shown exceptional dedication to the growth of the institution, initiating several reforms that improved both academic and administrative performance.
“We are shocked by the sudden suspension of our Rector and Bursar without clear evidence of wrongdoing. Under their leadership, the school witnessed tremendous improvements in infrastructure, discipline, and student welfare. We see this action as unfair and politically influenced,” the statement read.
Community Publishers also highlighted the achievements recorded by the current management, including the renovation of dilapidated hostels, improved academic calendar stability, and a more transparent financial system.

They fear that the suspension could reverse these gains, create leadership instability, and disrupt ongoing academic activities.
“Our greatest fear is that this suspension will throw the school into confusion. Students are currently in the middle of examinations, and any disruption in leadership may affect our academic schedule,” said Miss Jennifer Ogbogu, a student of the Department of Mass Communication.

The Community Publishers appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene and ensure that justice and fairness prevail. They urged the state government to prioritize the stability of the institution and prevent external influence from derailing the progress made so far.
“We call on His Excellency, Governor Oborevwori, to set up an independent panel to review the circumstances surrounding the suspension. We have confidence that the Governor, being a lover of education, will not allow politics to destroy the peace and progress of our school,” the students added.
While expressing their anger, the Community Publishers advised students to remain calm and avoid any form of protest that could lead to the closure of the institution. They assured that the union is engaging relevant authorities to seek a peaceful resolution.

Conclusion

The suspension of the Rector and Bursar of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, has stirred tension within the academic community. As investigations continue, students are calling for fairness, transparency, and swift government intervention to prevent the situation from escalating.

For now, the polytechnic community watches closely, hoping that truth and justice will prevail — and that education, not politics, will remain the focus.
