EDO 2020: Wike blasts PDP NWC, denies masterminding plot against Obaseki’s governorship bid

Gov. Wike

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has said he did not influence the decision of a Federal High Court in State that blocked Governor Godwin Obaseki from participating in the Peoples Democratic Party’s Edo State governorship primary.

Wike’s denial was made public by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, who quoted the governor in a statement as also describing some members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) as tax collectors.

Nsirim said Wike has decided to pull out of the ongoing moves to reconcile aspirants of the party in Edo State insisting that he’s been blackmailed with lies by “sycophants” in the NWC.

He said instead of the NWC to carry everybody along in Edo state, they resorted to using the media to blackmail him.

Wike said: “I told them that in Edo State, we must handle the issue carefully and carry everybody along. They must respect human beings and not behave like tax collectors.

“They said because an order was obtained from a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, then I am responsible.

“I have had sleepless nights to resolve the issue in Edo state. The Governors of Edo, Adamawa, and Delta states, know what I have done to resolve the issues in Edo state.
“As a result of this senseless accusation, I have pulled out of Edo State settlement. My integrity matters. I have also directed my lawyer to write Thisday Newspaper on the publication they made against me in their Tuesday, 23rd June, 2020 edition.
“I know the members of the National Working Committee of PDP who connived with Thisday. They are tax collectors. Let them challenge me and I will come out with more facts. Nobody will rubbish me by raising false accusations against me. I will fight back,” the Governor said in the statement.

Wike said he would no longer participate in any reconciliation and wondered why the NWC wanted to consult governors of the party. He questioned why the NWC did not consult with governors in the case of Bayelsa State.

The governor warned that if PDP was not careful, the crisis in the All Progressive Congress (APC) would be a child’s play.

“I am brought up not to accept injustice, and that is why I keep speaking out on national issues. Nobody in PDP can intimidate Rivers State.

“Nobody can threaten me because I said things must be done constitutionally. I will always continue to satisfy my conscience.

“From now on, I want to concentrate on the development of Rivers State.”

Customs Intercepts COVID-19 Vehicle Used To Smuggle Contraband

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Federal Operations Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Zone A, Ikeja, on Wednesday said its operatives intercepted a COVID-19 branded vehicle allegedly used by criminals to smuggle frozen chicken into the country. Also, the NCS said its men intercepted various items of contraband worth N12.7 billion in the last four months.

The information is according to the Unit’s Public Relations Officer, Jerry Attah in a press release.
The NCS spokesman said that the officers intercepted the vehicle, whose occupants had allegedly disguised as health workers on essential duty, to smuggle cartons of frozen chicken into Nigeria from Benin Republic.

Attah, who spoke on behalf of the Area Controller of the unit, Usman Yahaya said the vehicle was arrested along the Ijebu-Ode expressway by NCS officers on routine patrol in the axis.

The Customs boss added: “The officers were professional enough to intercept the vehicle, which was purportedly used in the movement of essential commodities, but the officers were surprised to see it was used for illegal activities such as movement of contraband.
“We have arrested the vehicle and investigation has commenced to unravel the other atrocities the smugglers may have committed using the essential duty tag.”

Giving details the activities of the Command in the last four months, the Area Controller said contraband items worth N12.7bn were intercepted from smugglers between January and April 2020.

According to him, the Unit also paid N1.14bn into the Treasury Single Account of the federal government from Debit Note (DN) on intercepted containers at the Lagos seaport, voluntary payment of Customs duty on vehicles and auction sales, among others.
Yahaya said, “We won’t relent on our anti-smuggling fight, especially at this time the government is preaching diversification into the agric sector due to the fall in price of oil in the international market, which has affected government’s revenue base.

“So we will ensure smuggling is reduced to the barest minimum and not allow it to fester as that could be injurious to our economy and the country”.

COVID – 19: Delta Government Decontaminates SSG’s Office

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]feajika called on residents of the state to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 protocols as anyone, irrespective of status, could contract the virus.

“Let me advise all Deltans to, as a matter of top priority, always obey the COVID-19 protocols, which have been in public domain, so as to curb further spread of the pandemic.

“The fresh cases in our hands in Delta further testifies to the fact that COVID-19 is not a scam. It is real and people should take the issues of the virus and personal hygiene seriously.

“COVID-19 is not a death sentence; so, when you begin to feel unwell, reach out to approved government hospitals for appropriate tests to be carried out.

“We can save ourselves and others from this virus if we obey all the protocols of wearing face masks, regular washing of hands in running water, use of alcohol-based sanitisers and maintaining physical-distancing while congregating in any form.

“All our hospitals and isolation centres across the state are on 24 hours alert to receive any case(s) of the Coronavirus or other health challenges,” he stated.

Following the infection of the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, with the coronavirus, the state government has embarked on the fumigation of his office to make it safe for normal activities.

The exercise was conducted by the state Ministry of Health.

Health Commissioner, Dr. Mordi Ononye, who was on hand to supervise the exercise, said full operations would resume in the office after a two – week quarantine period during which contact tracing would be done within the office to ascertain the status of the workers.

Dr Ononye said government was on top of the situation, disclosing that the state had the needed capacity to test and treat COVID – 19 cases.

He said the SSG and the Information Commissioner were in stable conditions and responding to treatment.

At the Ministry of Information, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Paul Osahor, told our reporter that arrangements had been concluded by the Ministry of Health to decontaminate the office.

The PS said the office would be closed for two weeks thereafter for proper contact tracing and isolation, where necessary.

Okowa Challenges Contractors on Projects’ Deadlines

[dropcap]G[/dropcap]overnor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has urged contractors handling housing projects in the state to redouble their efforts and meet completion deadlines.
Okowa made the call on Friday while speaking with newsmen after inspecting some ongoing housing projects in Asaba.
The projects inspected were the 2,000-sitting-capacity Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Ecumenical Centre, Delta State Traditional Rulers Council Secretariat and new residential and office complex for top government officials under the Governor’s Office.
The governor, however, lauded the contractors handling the projects for not allowing the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 to disrupt their pace of work, and said that he would sustain regular inspection of projects across the state.

He particularly expressed delighted with the level of work at the traditional rulers secretariat, but urged the contractor to increase the pace to enable the project to be inaugurated on time.
On the Ecumenical Centre, Okowa disclosed that the project had 18-month time-frame for completion, and that the contractor had done much on site within six months.
He affirmed that his administration was irrevocably committed to completing all projects initiated in the housing sector and called for the support of the supervising ministry of the projects.
“In spite of the effects of COVID-19 which had slowed down the pace of work by many construction companies, I am glad to note that the contractors handling housing projects in the state are doing well. I am quite impressed with the level of work done so far.
“You can see right from the outside of the Traditional Rulers Council Secretariat that the quality of work is obviously very high.
“The contractor handling the project had promised to deliver the project in September this year, and I am quite happy with that. We look forward to delivering this project so that our traditional rulers can have where to meet.
“I must appreciate the quality of the contractors chosen by the Ministry of Housing and I also believe that regular supervision had enabled them to have the quality of work that we have at the moment,” Okowa added.
The Commissioner for Housing, Chief Festus Ochonogor, who conducted the governor round the project sites, assured that no effort would be spared in routine supervision of projects under his ministry to ensure that contractors executed projects in line with contractual agreement.

The Irony Of Life: A prolonged and bitter quarrel Between Obaseki And Oshiomhole

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]onders shall never end. The dramatic nature of Nigeria politics is getting more interesting on a daily basis. A season film that is more luring and captivating than Spartacus; political warriors are showing what they are made of in all ramifications. A politics of godfatherism and lordship in display. We heard of Ambode and Tinubu of Lagos state, Akpabio and Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State and now, it is Oshiomhole and Obaseki of Edo state. Of course, the number of episodes that have been staged by these set of politicians is a long one. No one dares to watch till the end.

Politics is not only a dirty game but funny game. The mantra of no permanent friend and no permanent enemy in politics is very apt and thoughtful. Everyone in political circle is eager to achieving permanent interest. No godfather will ever fight for good governance, their fights always revolve around personal interest. As the clash of interest occur, Oshiomhole who introduced Obaseki to Edo state politics was the one that shot him in the leg. What a drama inside life!

Oshiomhole said in one of their campaigns in 2016 that Obaseki graduated from University of Ibadan with flying color and proceeded to abroad for his Master programs. Oshiomole said Obaseki came back to Nigeria and helped people to set up businesses in Edo state, he said Obaseki was among those who set up many of the second generation banks in the state. Oshiomole said everything concerning academic credentials of Obaseki was accurate, correct without any falsification. My God! I was laughing while watching the video skit. So, Oshiomhole had once said those good things with flowery language about Obaseki before ? Another picture of the duo on Edo street eating maize was a jumbo lesson that nothing last for ever in life. As a matter of fact, political godfathers care less about good roads, hospitals, education and quality health care. What matters to them is their interest. Simply put, Oshiomhole destroyed what he built not because of Obaseki’s poor governance but for the clash of interest. Wonderful!
I don’t want to take side here, but sincerely speaking, Obaseki got himself into the mess. Apart from biting a finger that fed him, the place of loyalty in relationship can not be measured. Relationship is like an onion, the layers will peel to the last layer and that is when deterioration will set in. But the loyalty will uphold the things shared in common firmly without getting exposed. Obaseki exposed many things done behind the scene with his master. Obaseki said he didn’t know his commissioners , Oshiomhole gave him names. Obaseki stepped on toes as an authority without minding his second attempt. He said nobody can remove him from that seat. His impact in the plot to remove Oshiomhole as the National Chairman was pellucid. Had Oshiomhole been removed, Obaseki would have been a warrior by now for relagating his benefactor but Oshiomhole being a political ‘jugunu’ played his politics politely and stick to Jagaban of Lagos. His in-depth loyalty to Tinubu inundated him and foiled his removal. Now, Oshiomhole is the warrior and Obaseki is looking for where to hide is head under PDP’s umbrella. The cordial relationship now taste sour. What an irony of life!

Worse still, the same certificate Obaseki used to serve his first tenure was used against him in his second attempt. This is not about certificate, it was a conspiracy and willful decision of the party to deal with Obaseki. Maybe in his next attempt, he will learn how to respect elders with loyalty. Before then, I pray for his political career to rest in perfect peace.

Appeal Court Affirms Oshiomhole’s Suspension As APC National Chairman

Comrade Adams Oshoimhole

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the suspension of Adams Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

An FCT High Court had on March 4 granted an application by six members of the APC in Edo State suspending Oshiomhole from office.

A three member panel of justices led by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem held that Oshiomhole’s appeal challenging his suspension was unmeritorious.

Justice Danlami Senchi of the High Court had issued an injunctive order suspending Oshiomhole as the APC National Chairman pending the determination of a substantive suit.

The Senchi, gave the order following an application of interlocutory injunction asking the court to suspend Mr Oshiomhole, having been suspended as a member of the APC by the party in Edo State.

The application filed by applicant, Oluwale Afolabi had Mr Oshiomhole as the first respondent, and APC as the second respondent.

Mr Afolabi in his application dated and filed on January 16 had contended that Mr Oshiomhole is currently suspended by the party and has not challenged the suspension.

According to Mr Afolabi, Mr Oshiomhole’s rights as an APC member is currently abated and he cannot continue to act as chairman of the party.

He argued that Mr Oshiomhole cannot continue to enjoy benefits from the APC, despite his suspension as a member of the party.

This is coming on the same day Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State resigned his membership of the APC, after meeting with Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff (CoS) to President Muhammadu Buhari at the Villa.
