Fuel stations shut down operations few hours after Tinubu’s announcement of subsidy removal

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ong queues have suddenly, sprung up in some fuel stations in Lagos State on Monday, with motorists in panic buying across the state.

The development followed announcement by the newly inaugurated President Bola Tinubu, in his inaugural address, to remove the controversial oil subsidy.

Meanwhile, a few areas of the metropolis monitored by Vanguard, showed cars queuing up, while other buyers were seen with different sizes of kegs and jerrycans to buy the product.

Some of the fuel stations seized the opportunity to jerk up the price from N184 per litre to as high as N250 per litre.

Other fuel stations which earlier were seen opening for business, later shut their gates, apparently, hoarding the product.

Along the Egbeda/Idimu Road, the few places where the product is being sold had vehicles scampering for it, while commuters were seen stranded at various bus stops waiting to board commercial bus.

Few of the buses that were on the road for business hiked the fares between 50 and 100 per cent over fear of impending scarcity.

A trip from Egbeda to Ikotun which formerly was N200 was jerked up to N300. Also a trip from Egbeda to Ikeja, formerly between N250 and N300 cost N400. Some commuters refused to board it because of the exhorbitant prices.

One of the motorists, wearing a long face, who spoke with this reporter at one of the fuel stations selling petrol, lamented, “Why would Tinubu start on this note to punish the already depressed, impoverished Nigerians inflicted by the out-gone administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“This is absolutely unfair to Nigerians. When I heard that Tinubu has directed removal of oil subsidy, I had to rush down here to fill my tank and some jerry cans for my power generating set.”

Also Mr.John Akinloye, a motorist along Agege area, said, “I was not surprised to see queues at the fuel stations after the announcement. I just pray this sad and unfortunate development will not last so as not to put suffering masses in another round of economic and mental torture.

“I have been at the fuel station for over an hour, I’m yet to get to the fuel pump point. Even the fuel attendants are not willing to sell more than N3,000 per each buyer. If you want to buy N4,000 they are refusing.”

Ladies and Gentlemen
I accept with humility the responsibility which the good people of Delta State have bestowed upon me to serve as their governor for the next four years. I accept it with a resolve to do MORE to ADVANCE the State to new heights in leadership and socio-economic development.

2. ​I stand before you today filled with hope and confidence about our future. As the longest-serving Speaker of the House of Assembly, I have learnt the importance of setting the priorities of government, communicating the goals and outcomes of policies and programmes, and partnering with the executive for their successful implementation. I am therefore, well positioned to deliver good governance to our people.

3. ​But before proceeding further, I wish to pay tribute to my predecessor, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for his patriotism and deep sense of public service. Governor Okowa took over the mantle of leadership of this State at a very precarious time in the history of our country. In addition to the massive disruptions caused by COVID-19, the country went through two recessions at different times in the last eight years. But thanks to Governor Okowa’s discipline, wisdom, prudent management of the economy, and political insight, Delta State not only survived, but it also came out stronger. Indeed, I celebrate Governor Okowa for his fiscal discipline, and groundbreaking strides in human capital development, infrastructure renewal, technical and vocational education, as well as peace building.

4.​ It would be wrong of me if I fail to also acknowledge the roles played by the founding fathers of the State, military and civilian, whose sacrifice and dedication helped to nurture the state from infancy. It goes without saying that the State flourished under the current democratic dispensation that began in 1999. In this regard, their Excellencies, Chief James Onanefe Ibori and Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan deserve special commendation for their vision and tenacity of purpose.

5.​ Today marks the beginning not only of a new administration, but of an era that will advance Delta State to greater heights in people-centred policies, human capital development, and infrastructure renewal. With what has been achieved by the immediate past administration, the new government is poised to ADVANCE the state through the MORE agenda, which stands for:

Meaningful development;
Opportunities for all;
Realistic reforms; and
Enhanced peace and security.

6.​ Consequently, the new administration will seek to:
Foster sustainable economic growth and private sector job creation;
Boost human capital;
Build an enabling infrastructure;
Enhance governance and accountability systems for improved service delivery; and
Strengthen public financial management.

7.​ In furtherance of these objectives, the existing entrepreneurship development programmes will be sustained and expanded to encourage the creation of more small-scale businesses, thus creating jobs and, consequently, reducing crime and anti-social activities among our vibrant youth population.

8.​ We will also enhance the existing social investment programmes for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable groups, including widows and People Living with Disabilities, through microcredit, training, and business networking. We shall further develop empowerment programmes for women associations, particularly in the rural areas.

9.​ This administration will ensure the completion of all ongoing projects – roads, bridges, schools, and other physical infrastructure. As you all know, government cannot do it alone. Hence, we shall build a conducive environment for public-private partnership investments in virtually all sectors of the economy.

10.​ In the agricultural sector, we shall develop the agricultural value chain, which is a major driver of sustainable economic growth. This administration will spare no effort to ensure that the development of agro-industrial parks is accelerated, given their potential to generate employment opportunities, create wealth, reduce unemployment, and improve food security.

11.​ The recent approval of the Nigerian Export Processing Zone Authority (NEPZA), for Koko and Kwale is a welcome development because this project has the capacity to unleash the growth potentials of the State. With the Board already in place, we shall immediately take steps to make it fully operational and attract investors to the zone.

12.​ Delta State has been relatively peaceful in the last eight years. However, recent security breaches in the Warri area are troubling. This administration with the aide of security agencies will take decisive steps to ensure that the situation does not degenerate.

13. Furthermore, Warri the commercial nerve centre of the State, will be given special attention under this administration. The process has already commenced with the establishment of Warri, Uvwie, and Environs Development Agency (WUEDA). Before the ongoing Storm Water Project will be completed, government will commence efforts at giving Warri and its environs a total facelift. Similarly, the ongoing rehabilitation work on the Warri Township Stadium will be expedited.​

14. The Civil Service will be accorded top priority to boost its efficiency and enhance its service delivery. In addition, merit will be the yardstick for elevation into top management positions to encourage the entry into and retention of the best brains in the public service. Furthermore, this administration will render all the necessary support to the judiciary to enable it carry out its functions without let or hindrance.

CONCLUSION

15.​ Your Excellencies, my dear good people of Delta State, the issues that confront this administration are not new. They are about improving the quality of life of our people, about building bridges of social cohesion, about giving our people the hope of a better tomorrow, and about accelerated development. And it demands creative thinking, proactive action, and exemplary leadership from me and all those who will have the privilege to serve as elected officials and political appointees.

16.​ I pledge to run an open and responsive government that meets the needs and aspirations of our people. I represent consolidation and advancement; consolidation because I am continuing from where the previous government stopped, and advancement because I am advancing Delta State to greater heights in inclusive economic growth, human capital development, infrastructure renewal, and peace and security. I am committed to making life richer, better, and more fulfilling for our people.

17.​ To my former colleagues in the Sixth and Seventh Assemblies, I whole-heartedly thank you for your support. My appreciation also goes to the fathers of faith for your prayers and counsel. And to our revered traditional rulers, I thank you for your prayers, words of wisdom and advice. I will continue to count on your support.

18. In conclusion, I covet the prayer of all of you for the wisdom to lead, and the divine enablement to achieve the goals that we have set for this administration. The tasks we face are tough, the choices not easy. But with your support and prayers we shall get the job done.

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]en Peter Nwaoboshi expresses his appreciation to the Federal Government under the dynamic leadership of President, Mohammadu Buhari, GCFR, for the establishment of the Federal University of Medical and Health sciences Kwale, in Delta State, as announced to the public on the 11-05-23 via a press release signed by Mr. Sunny Areh the chief Press secretary to the Deputy Senate President, Sen Ovie Omo Agege.

While commending the Deputy Senate President for sustaining this struggle in his absence for the establishment of this higher institution in Ndokwa land, it is instructive to note that the foundation for a tertiary institution for Ndokwa Nation was laid by Sen Peter Nwaoboshi in the 8th assembly and now actualised in the 9th assembly. The most Distinguished Senator notes that through “our joint, collective, spirited lobbying of the Federal authorities they secured their promise that a tertiary institution will be given to Ndokwa Nation before the end of this administration.”

In this joyous mood, Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi joins the indefatigable Deputy Senate President, Sen Ovie Omo Agege to thank the President and commander in Chief, President Buhari, GCFR, the Honourable Minister of Education for this laudable, timely gesture of establishing this institution in Kwale, Ndokwa land.

It is a thing of joy that the stringent advocacy of Sen Peter Nwaoboshi to the effect that Ndokwa Nation deserves and should have a Federal tertiary institution has now been actualised under the the administration of the APC led Federal Government.

Congratulations to the people of Kwale; Congratulations to Ndokwa Nation; Congratulations to Delta State; Congratulations to the APC family.

In a statement released and signed by the Chairman of the Association, Comrade Jude Obiemenyego made available to journalists.

According to him, the choice of CP Wale Abass to the exalted position and complex state like Delta did not come as a surprise.

He added, “Rather, it is a move in the right direction and an express indication of putting a round peg in a round hole, owing to his antecedents and record breaking up-beat in all the Police Commands he served before and his short stint as the Deputy Commissioner of Police,SCID Asaba Delta State.

The group said, “With this appointment, there is no doubt that CP Abass is saddled with the responsibility of repositioning the Delta State Police Command in all its ramifications, giving the seeming fall out between the Police and the populace.
Stating further that having followed his track records as a top echelon of the Nigeria Police Force, it is instructive to inform that expectations on him are high to bring his professional expertise to bear on this nouveau saddle.

The group promised that as an association, it will support CP Abass to succeed, as long as he puts in the necessary policy thrusts that will make the Delta State Police Command better than it is at present.

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]P Wale Abass has assumed duty as the 21st Commissioner of Police, Delta state Command. The new CP is taking over from AIG Ari Muhammed Ali FCIA, psc+, who has been transferred to Lagos State as AIG zone 2.

CP. Abass hails from Ede North Local Government Area, Osun State. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and Political Science from University of Lagos. He has a Master Degree in International Law and Diplomacy also from University of Lagos. CP Wale was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on 3rd March 1990 as a member of course 16 Cadet ASP and trained in the Elite Police Academy, Kaduna.

He has served in various capacities in the Nigeria Police force which includes Unit Commander 16 Squadron (PMF), where he rose to become the Commander of the Squadron, he also served as Area Commander Mubi, Adamawa State, Area Commander Railway, Lagos State Railway Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police State CID Delta State, Area Commander ‘C’ Surulere, Lagos State, Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations Yobe State, Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID Asaba Delta State, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ogun State, Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID Oyo State Command. He was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police and Posted to Benue State Command in year 2022 where he served for a period of one year and four months before his deployment to Delta State as the 21st Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command.

CP Wale Abass is happily married and blessed with children.

While taking over from the outgoing CP, the incoming CP promised to build on existing security mechanisms already in place towards enthroning the reign of peace and safety in Delta State. He advised the public to always cooperate with the Police and other security agencies at all times while tasking the youths not to allow themselves to be used for any act of criminality. He also noted that he is not new to the State and as such will continue from where his predecessor stopped while assuring Deltans that the Command under his leadership will ensure that the State become uncomfortable for criminals.

In his handing over remarks, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, AIG. Ari Muhammed Ali FCIA, psc+, thanked the State Government and the people of the Delta State for their cooperation while he was in charge of the command and urged them to extend the same to his successor.

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]elta State Commissioner of Police Delta , CP Wale Abass addressed officers and men of the command stating that, it is very pertinent for all officers to carry out their duties diligently. He also said that only result oriented officers will retain their offices. A few days after his assumption of duty in the command, his operational strategies are already yielding results.

On May 9, 2023 at about 2000hrs, the DPO ‘A’ Division Warri, CSP T.Y Mahmud led the divisional anti-crime patrol team out on visibility and confidence building patrol, to curtail the activities of kidnappers and armed robbers in Warri and its environs. During the patrol, the team intercepted a tricycle along Eagle roundabout by Ugunu bridge, conveying three occupants and subjected them to a search. During the search, thirty (30) rounds of 7.62 AK47 live ammunition were recovered from two of the passengers namely; Eddy Aboyowa (m) age 37years, and Akpani Isaiah (m) age 35years, both of Eyiejuku street off Deco road, Warri. Suspects are in custody, and investigation is ongoing.

In an earlier development, the command’s Decoy squad received an intelligence report on a syndicate that supplies cartridges to kidnappers, armed robbers, and cultists. The operatives led by the commander Decoy squad, ASP Julius Robinson embarked on a sting operation, at about 0940hrs of 8th May 2023, and arrested one Chinedu Enenmo ‘m’ 37yrs of Akere Ogidi, Ogbaru LGA Anambra state at their hideout in one of the popular hotel in Asaba, where they hibernate and carry out their nefarious activities and recovered two hundred and fifty (250) rounds of live cartridges from the suspect. During the course of investigation, the suspect gave useful information about his accomplice and led the operatives to Fegge area of Onitsha in Anambra State where one Donatus Ndukan ‘m’ 34yrs of Urom community in Awka-North LGA of Anambra State whom he described as his boss in the business was also arrested. Both suspects are in custody, and investigation is ongoing

Anyone who encounters him would love to associate with him for his candour, courage and forthrightness. As a human being, his humility and modesty is second to none. As an traditionalist, he is sound and engaging.
Greatness is a property for which no man can receive credit too soon; it must be possessed long before it is acknowledged.”When one of the world’s greatest thinkers, Ralph Waldo Emerson handed down the above words of wisdom, those he had in mind were certainly the likes of High Chief Celestine Okafor, the 12th Ikwele Of Isu Kingdom! .
His Eminence needs no introduction as a Nigerian.He is not a stranger to Ibusa culture. His bonding with Ibusa traditional culture is akin to the umbilical relationship between a child and the mother right from the womb and last all through a lifetime. His antecedents and achievements as 12th Ikwele of Ibusa speaks volumes. He is a perfect example of leadership symbolism, the paragon of idealism, the soul of humanity, the heart of warrior, and a perfect traditional man.

Since His Eminence ascend to throne as the 12th Ikwele, Ibusa kingdom has witnessed tremendous positive changes, he is someone who appreciates his purpose in life and still understand the components of that purpose. He is one man who has stood out among the few who had more than a fleeting nation of his sojourn on earth. He is a rare breed who viewed life solely from the perspective of his God, and knew that life’s purpose can only be fulfilled when self-will is surrounded to Almighty. A very supportive, encouraging and inspiring fellow who always sets his mind on whatever he does passionately and quietly. He is a loving, kind-hearted man and this shows in his dealings with all that come across him, including his fellow traditional chiefs. One peculiarity of His Eminence, High Chief Celestine Okafor is that he operates with synergy in his relationship with not only his people but also people who comes around him.

His Eminence, High Chief Celestine Okafor is not only the Pride of Ibusa Kingdom but also the Pride of the People of Oshimili North for whom he had waged countless traditional wars for and won virtually all, just like the Greek mythological Odyssey who fought and won difficult battles in History, the grassroots traditional mobilizer of our time also fought and won many battles even those considered as herculean in nature for his people.He occupies one of the most important thrones in Igbuzo Kingdom but doesn’t make a fuss of it.High Chief Celestine Okafor is officially the spiritual leader and custodian of Igbuzo. He is the only living Igbuzo man that has the ears of the gods and the ancestors even as he relays the messages of our gods to the living.
As his greetings (Owouta….means The one who wages the arrows) connotes, he has the sole responsibility of protecting Igbuzo and her children from the negative spiritual arrows fired at the town and her people – a duty he performs every second of the day! The Ikwele institution is the engine room of Ibusa traditional system ,Ikwele of Ibusa is the only man who initiates the warlords in the town before the the senior diopka chalks any of the warlords – Odogwu Of Igbuzo, Iyase Of Igbuzo and the Uwolo Of Igbuzo, the occupant-to-be must pass through the spiritual powers and endorsement of Ikwele who prepares him for the onerous task ahead.

Ikwele of Ibusa is not a political position nor influenced by position in the society but strictly a spiritual affair and the umbilical cord from the first Ikwele to the recent Ikwele has remained unbroken. Let us not forget that the Ikwele Institution is the only seat in Igbuzo that can not be politicized, because Ikwele Igbozu is “god among men” As the 12th Ikwele of Ibusa , You have really voiced out and fought for your people’s common goals, You remains the only traditional authority who knows the plight, feelings and desires of his People and Youths. High Chief Celestine Okafor has achieved in Ibusa and he has been able to touch the lives of the Youths like never before and also proved himself a force to reckon with among frontline players of Ibusa traditional system.

Indeed the birthday celebration of this digital traditional warlord of Ibusa of our time had been useful and Resourceful for his service to humanity.Therefore today let me on behalf of the Grassroots Publishers in Delta State join the rest of my beloved Ibusa kingdom,Oshimili North LGA, Deltans and Nigerians at large to Celebrate our traditional iconoclastic Ikwele of Igbuzo, to thank Almighty God for adding another year to your life and to pray that he continues to bless you with robust health and imbue you with his continued guidance, protection, and enduring provision.Your reign shall bring prosperity and peace to Ibusa and your family.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, has said only God can stop the President-elect, Bola Tinubu’s swearing-in on May 29.

Keyamo said the All Progressives Congress, APC, has no fear over Tinubu’s swearing in. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria also noted that those who think Tinubu will not be sworn in as President on May 29 for legal reasons are living in a fools paradise.

According to Keyamo: “Why should we exercise any fear? Any opposition member alive now who believes that for some legal reasons Asiwaju will not be inaugurated must be living in fools’ paradise.

“Except there is an Act of God who is Almighty, nothing will stop the inauguration of Asiwaju.

“The opposition should just concentrate on their petitions in court or start preparing for 2027.”

Despite winning the presidential election, there has been speculations surrounding his inauguration.

The Spiritual Head of Soul Revival Outreach in Anambra State, Prophet, Iyke Uzukwu had urged Nigerians to pray for Tinubu as he prepares for his inauguration.

Uzukwu said the president-elect needs prayers to complete his tenure, which is expected to kick off on May 29.

He, however, said the former Lagos Governor would be a successful president, stressing that the president-elect would not be manipulated like the outgoing president, Muhammadu Buhari.

Delta gets Special Economic Zone license

[dropcap]G[/dropcap]overnor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, on Wednesday affirmed that the state was ready to partner investors in its vast oil and gas deposits as the country grappled with economic turnaround. 

The governor made this known while receiving Delta Special Economic Zone license from Federal Government through Nigerian Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), in Abuja.

He said that his administration had provided enabling environment, including peace and security, for businesses to thrive, and assured the sustenance of development in the state.

Okowa expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the special license, and also assured that the state government was prepared to synergise with NEPZA, corporate organizations and groups to achieve the essence of the license.

He commended the management of NEPZA for the support and encouragement toward the realization of the state’s desire to have its resources properly harnessed.

He disclosed that availability of four seaports and two airports, in addition to necessary infrastructure, including good roads network, was a great impetus for businesses to flourish in the state.

In his remarks, Minister of Investment, Commerce and industry, Chief Niyi Adebayo, pledged Federal Government’s support to the development of the special economic zone in Delta.

Adebayo, who was represented by a Deputy Director in the ministry, Mr S.A. Jaja, said that operation of the economic zone would have multiplier-effect on Delta’s and national economy.

Earlier, the Chairman, Steering Committee for Establishment of Delta Special Economic Zone, Mr Festus Agas, had traced the track led to the presentation of the operating license to the state, and commended Governor Okowa for the effort.

Agas, who is Chief of Staff to Okowa, lauded the Federal Government for discerning the potential in Delta and approving the license.

He also commended NEPZA for the collaboration in seeing the “project” through, and sued for sustenance of the synergy.
