Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila, popularly known as Femi Gbajabiamila, remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures, having built a distinguished career spanning over two decades in public service.
A lawyer and seasoned politician, Gbajabiamila rose through the ranks of Nigeria’s political landscape to become the 14th Speaker of the House of Representatives. He assumed the position on June 11, 2019, succeeding Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, and served until June 11, 2023.
During his tenure as Speaker, the House of Representatives deliberated on numerous legislative matters and national issues affecting the economy, education, employment, infrastructure, public finance, security and other sectors critical to national development. His leadership was widely associated with efforts to strengthen legislative oversight and improve cooperation among key institutions of government.
After approximately 20 years in the House of Representatives, Gbajabiamila exited the National Assembly in 2023 following his appointment as Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He officially assumed office on June 14, 2023, succeeding Professor Ibrahim Gambari.
The appointment marked a significant transition from legislative leadership to executive service, placing him at the centre of policy coordination and administrative activities within the Presidency. As Chief of Staff, Gbajabiamila works closely with President Tinubu, coordinating engagements between the President, government officials and various stakeholders while facilitating the smooth operation of presidential activities.
His contributions to public service have earned him several honours and recognitions. In October 2022, former President Muhammadu Buhari conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), one of Nigeria’s highest national awards. He was also honoured with the African Achievers Award in 2018.
Beyond national recognition, the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, bestowed on him the prestigious traditional title of Aare Baasofin of Yorubaland, which translates to “Supreme Lawmaker of Yorubaland,” in recognition of his contributions to legislative governance and public service.
Speaking recently at the 2026 Gbaja Mega Empowerment Programme in Lagos, Gbajabiamila addressed concerns over what he described as attempts by certain individuals to exploit his name for fraudulent activities and misinformation.
He warned those allegedly using his identity to deceive members of the public or spread false information about him to desist, stressing that the law would eventually catch up with offenders.
The Chief of Staff maintained that no amount of intimidation, blackmail or falsehood would distract him from carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to him by President Tinubu.
Gbajabiamila also reaffirmed his loyalty to the President, noting that although there had been occasions when political decisions differed from his personal preferences, such differences never affected his commitment to the administration or the confidence reposed in him.
According to him, loyalty, dedication and service have remained the guiding principles of his political career, adding that he would continue to discharge his duties diligently despite criticism from detractors.
As one of the most experienced politicians in contemporary Nigeria, Gbajabiamila’s journey from the legislative chambers to the Presidency reflects a career defined by public service, leadership and sustained participation in the nation’s democratic development.
