ASABA – The Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, has been accused of ordering the assault of an Assistant Director, Mr Unity Adeda, at the state secretariat in Asaba, following an alleged confrontation between the two men.
Sources familiar with the incident alleged that the commissioner, during the encounter, asked Adeda whether he knew him. The official was said to have replied that he did not.
According to the account circulating among officials, Ashibogwu allegedly directed his police orderly and driver to assault Adeda.
Adeda was reportedly taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, for medical attention following the incident. He was later said to have died, with his remains reportedly deposited at a mortuary in Asaba.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and subsequent death have generated concern among workers and officials at the state secretariat.
Adeda was reportedly recently redeployed from a field office before the alleged encounter. Sources suggested that the redeployment may have been connected to the circumstances surrounding his interaction with the commissioner, although this could not be independently established.
There are also claims that video footage of the incident exists and may be in the possession of the Director of Examinations.
The allegations, including the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death and the alleged involvement of the commissioner, his police orderly and driver, require urgent clarification from the relevant authorities.
As of press time, efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Delta State for confirmation of the reported death and the circumstances surrounding the incident proved unsuccessful.
The whereabouts of the commissioner and his driver could not be independently confirmed at the time of filing this report, despite claims circulating that they had gone into hiding.
The Delta State Government and the police are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
