With a richly intimidating resume that boasts of a Advanced professional diploma in Sustainable Development in Green and Digital Enterprises solutions , with scholastic honours, (Best PhD Thesis , 2001), an Association of African Universities (AAU) Fellowship Award (2014), as Visiting Professor , to Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein, Free State , South Africa, and in addition to a rich work experience profile through the rungs of the academic ladder , his has been a clear mindset of opening new vistas and blazing trails . This is due mainly to the visionary leadership of Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu, the Rector, whose unwavering determination to turn the faith based citadel of learning to a global acclaim is set to redefine the narrative of leadership in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
When Delta State Governor appointed Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu as Rector in August,2021,he hit the ground running in a manner of speaking. For a Professor of Building, who has consistently displayed unwavering integrity and dedication to education, Achuenu’s leadership has break away from the conventional norms and stereotypes that have often defined leadership roles in this clime. The Building guru, Prof. Achuenu has had a distinguished academic journey that makes him eminently qualified for his role. With a Ph.D. in Construction Management (2000) plus other executive and management programmes attended in the course of his career, Achuenu’s academic qualifications, research achievements and leadership experiences have prepared him for this job at Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku.
Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi- Uku,founded in the year 2002 is a Academic based Citadel of Learning with the vision of Academic excellence comparable to global practice Achuenu had very invaluable academic and administrative experiences traversing major reputable tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
He rose progressively from being an Served as Dean,Faculty of Environmental Sciences, UniJos to rector. Hence, he was prepared for the job of the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi- Uku well ahead of time. In addition to these academic and administrative positions at the University of Jos, Prof. Achuenu held the position of Two-time winner of Best Ph.D. Thesis Supervisor in Nigeria (NUC, 2012, 2013), etc.

The Winner, Best Ph.D. Thesis (National Universities Commission, 2001) is also known as an advocate for diversity in all aspects of the Polytechnic. His administration has fostered an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds thrive, learn, and grow, while also recognizing the Polytechnic’s role in the broader community. In the relationship of the host community and gown, Achuenu has done well by initiated programmes and projects aimed at uplifting the local community and societal challenges. Under his leadership, Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi-Uku has been making giant strides on the globe stage through partnerships and collaborations with international institutions as Professor Achuenu’s vision is focused on putting Nigerian education on the globe map and creating citizens of the world.
Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi-Uku is a full-boarding modern institute with state-of-the-art facilities, highly professional administrative and dedicated academic and non-academic staff who are equipped to bring out the genius in students in the areas of academics, sports and leadership amongst others. When Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu became Rector in 2021,It is to the proactiveness of Bldr Prof Achuenu and his management team, that ALL the programmes run by the institution have been fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education ( NBTE), it’s regulatory body . In addition also , DSPG also secured approval to establish the School of Environmental Sciences , from NBTE, to run courses in ND Building Technology , ND Architecture , while further securing full accreditation in ND Urban and Regional Planning as well as ND Estate Management. Also securing NBTE,s nod are HND Agricultural and Bio Environmental Engineering Technology ( Farm , Power and Machinery option), HND Civil Engineering Technology , ND Cooperative Economics and Management , ND Social Development and ND Crime Management , respectively.
Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi-Uku provides an enriching learning environment that fosters innovation, critical thinking, and collaborative opportunities, empowering students to thrive academically and personally. The Distance & Online Learning, Part-Time and Entrepreneurship development centre products of the Polytechnic can competes favourable with any product in the general public across the globe, and the students are encouraged to acquire different skills. The institute of ICT centre is among the best in Nigeria Polytechnics today. Some of uncompleted infrastructure and buildings met by the Rector are currently undergoing renovation with provision of infrastructures.
Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu has played a major role in the development of Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi-Uku since becoming Rector. Here are his key contributions:
-Launched the school’s *Smart Campus City* with power generation from renewable energy, notably solar,with 24-Hour Power Supply*: With campus wide solar installations,students now enjoy constant electricity for studying, hostel life, and lab work, even during power outages. Safe, Well-Lit Environment*: Solar streetlights make movement safer at night, letting students study or walk around the campus confidently.
-Created a *renewable energy programme* in partnership with UNITOTAL ENERGY LIMITED, but fully funded and managed by the polytechnic.
-Advocated for expansion and more robust solar infrastructure through government and private partnerships.
-Hands-On Training: The polytechnic is now a hub for renewable energy education—students and staff get practical skills in solar tech, boosting career prospects and innovation. Under his leadership, engineering departments have carried out solar research and design, including efficient solar charger projects.
– Infrastructural Development:** Oversaw the construction and completion of a new 325-capacity lecture hall, modernized facilities, improved staff offices, and upgraded campus infrastructure.
-Renewable Energy Training: Started a renewable energy program where students learn hands-on about solar tech, making graduates more skilled and employable.Thanks to the modular solar-powered “Smart Campus” system, students and staff enjoy regular electricity on campus, no longer worrying about blackouts disrupting classes or night studies.
-Hands-On Experience*: Students get to work on real renewable energy projects—including designing and building solar generators with lithium batteries—making their education practical and career-focused.
– *Innovation Recognition*: The polytechnic’s solar inventions, like the DSPG solar generator and solar-powered machines, have been showcased and celebrated at national tech expos, boosting student morale and exposure.
– *Safety & Cost Saving*: The campus has better security with illuminated walkways at night and reduced generator fuel costs, freeing up funds for other services.
– *Entrepreneurial Opportunities*: Solar innovations are designed to help local small businesses (hairdressers, barbers, bakers), so students can create solutions for their communities.
-Ethical Leadership: Maintained high standards of transparency and ethical administration, earning the school merit awards for ethical responsibility and setting a positive example for staff and students.
-Academic Excellence: Strengthened academic standards, supported programme accreditations, and promoted staff development through training and workshops.
-Recognition: Received awards from community and youth groups, including leadership and merit honors for contributions to both infrastructure and ethical governance.
-Community Engagement: Fostered strong relationships with the host community, students, staff, and youth groups to maintain peace and drive collective progress.
-For the first time in Polytechnic’s 22 year history , the students have been motivated within the past three years of the Achuenu led administration, to participate in the provision of infrastructure on campus , leading to the construction of the Students Union Government ( SUG) Secretariat , lecture hall , speed breakers , water project and signages, a higly commendable act of leadership who denied themselves aluta vehicles to actualize the project.
As Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi-Uku looks to the future, Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu’s leadership will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of Nigerian leaders, scholars, and professionals.
