Delta Police Rescues Two Kidnapped Victims,In Oghara, Nab Suspected Armed Robbers, Cable Vandals

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n August 30, 2023 at about 1330hours, the DPO Oghara division received a distress call that two persons were suspected to have been kidnapped at Oghara-Ugbenu link road and their whereabouts not known.

In an ingenious display of crime fighting craft, the Divisional Police Officer of Oghara CSP Olasunkanmi Musiliu, while working on credible and technically generated information, led a combined team of police operatives of the Division, Anti-Cult Unit, SIB Unit, and the local vigilante groups into Oghara-Ugbenu Forest on the 31st of August 2023, at about 11:30 am.

The operatives relentlessly combed the forest which forced the kidnappers to abandon the victims and escaped. The operatives rescued the two kidnapped victims unhurt and have since reunited with their families.

Four live cartridges; one Tecno Spark phone; one ATM card; and three sim cards of different telecommunication networks were recovered from the scene. Regardless of the victim’s rescue, efforts are on top gear to ensure the arrest of the fleeing suspected kidnappers.

In a similar momentous effort, the SAFE DELTA SQUAD recovered a Beretta Pistol from one Michael Danjuma ‘M’. On September 1, 2023 at about 0735 hours, while responding to a complaint received from a distress caller (name withheld), the Commander of the Safe Delta detailed operatives who stormed the Ogbezoma quarters, Okpanam where the aforementioned suspect, Michael Danjuma was arrested. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the 23-year-old suspect who is a native of Latang in Plateau state but resides in Hausa Market by Custom Okpanam majors in vandalizing cables.

A Search Warrant was promptly executed at his premises; and upon a thorough search of his place of residence, the following exhibits were recovered: One Beretta Pistol, one magazine, some vandalized cables, two ATM Cards, and one steel pair of scissors. The suspect is in custody and will be charged to court upon completion of investigation.

Tinubu recalls all Nigeria’s ambassadors

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Bola Tinubu has recalled all Nigeria’s career and non-career ambassadors. This development was disclosed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on Saturday.

Tuggar made this known in response to inquiries that Tinubu recalled the Nigerian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Sarafa Ishola.

A statement by Tuggar’s media aide, Alkasim Abdulkadir, reads: “Sequel to the inquiries on the letter recalling the Nigerian ambassador to the UK, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has clarified that all career ambassadors and non-career ambassadors have been recalled on the instructions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Ambassadors as representatives of the country, serve at the behest of the president and it’s his prerogative to send or recall them from any country.”

However, the minister did not disclose the reason behind the recall.

The current ambassadors, including Ishola, were appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

But, Tinubu recalled him following the expiration of his tenure.

Police raid suspected gay wedding in Delta State

suspected homosexuals

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Delta State Police Command on Tuesday announced that it arrested over 100 suspected homosexuals carrying out a wedding ceremony in a hotel in Delta state.

The “gay suspects” were arrested in southern Delta state’s Ekpan town at about 2 a.m. on Monday at an event where two of them were married, state police spokesman Bright Edafe told reporters. He said that homosexuality “will never be tolerated” in Nigeria.

Arrests of gay people are common in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, where gay people can face up to 14 years in prison under the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act. Accomplices face 10 years in prison. Enacted in 2013, the law has been condemned locally and internationally though it is also supported by many in the country.

Police in Delta stormed a hotel in Ekpan where the gay wedding was being held and initially arrested 200 people, Edafe told reporters. Later, 67 of them were detained after initial investigations, he said.

He spoke at a police station where the suspects were being paraded.

suspected homosexuals

“The amazing part of it was that we saw two suspects, and there is a video recording where they were performing their wedding ceremony,” he said. “We are in Africa and we are in Nigeria. We cannot copy the Western world because we don’t have the same culture.”

He reiterated that police officers in Nigeria “cannot fold their hands” and watch gay people openly express their sexual orientation in the country.

“This is not something that will be allowed in Nigeria,” he said, adding that the suspects will be charged in court at the end of the investigation.

In a live broadcast of the suspects’ parade by the police, one of those arrested said they were not attending the wedding ceremony and were at the hotel for another engagement.

Another suspect said he does not identify as a gay person and was arrested while on his way to a fashion show.

“On my way going to the event, police attacked me and took me to the police station,” he said. “They said I have committed an offense while dressed like this but I don’t know if cross-dressing is against the constitution of the land.”

Activists have in the past accused the Nigerian police of using the same-sex prohibition law to carry out mass arrests that sometimes include straight people, including in 2017 when more than 40 people were arrested for allegedly being gay.

Nigeria is one of a growing list of African countries that have enacted laws criminalizing same-sex relationships, the latest being Uganda whose newly signed law carries a death penalty in some instances.

Oborevwori Asked To Suspend Okpanam Monarch Over Criminal Charges In Court

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]eaders and members of Izuani General Assembly, the highest ruling organ of Okpanam community in Oshimili North ll Local Council of Delta State have called for the immediate suspension from office, the traditional ruler of the community, Michael Mbanefo Ogbolu (Ugoani), pending the hearing and determination of the criminal charges against him at the Federal High Court, Asaba.

The leaders have sent a request letter to the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and signed by the Asagba of Okpanam, Obi Adimabua Ozili (JP), Ogbueshi Anthony Okafor, Obi (Dr) Victor Nwokobia, the Iyase of Obodogba/Diokpa of Umuobi Odogwu Okpanam, Chief (Dr) Sylvanus Ebigwei (MON), the secretary of the Assembly, Comrade Osita Onochie and others.

They appealed to the governor, as a father of all citizens of the state, to enforce the suspension of Ugoani over an alleged criminal charge of grave misconduct, ranging from fraud and forgery, which they said are offences that undermined the very fabric of their community.

The leaders said their actions followed a recent ongoing charge of fraud and forgery filed against the traditional ruler, which they described as malicious and has brought shame to the community.

The traditional ruler, according to them, has not only violated these norms, but has also eroded the trust and respect the community places on its traditional rulers.

In their request, they appealed to the governor to put in place a process for the suspension of the Ugoani Michael Mbanefo, stressing that the suspension no doubt would demonstrate that no individual irrespective of his or her status is above the law.

“The move, if carried out, will further create the good impression in principle that those who hold positions of power must be accountable for their actions,” they added.

Wike arrests owner of collapsed storey building in Abuja, orders immediate take over of affected area by FG

Gov Nyesom Wike

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]inister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate identification and arrest of the owner of a two-storey building which collapsed in Abuja on Wednesday night.

The building, located at Lagos Crescent, Garki Village in the Garki District of the nation’s capital, was one of the first-storey buildings in the area, collapsed around 11 pm amid heavy downpour, leaving two people dead, 37 rescued while others trapped.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, Wike who noted that original residents of the area were designated for resettlement, however, wondered why for years, the FCT Administration could not carry out such resettlement.

While he applauded the rescue efforts, Wike said; “It is unfortunate that we woke up this morning to the very disturbing news of this building collapse. It is not what we contemplated. Let me thank the agencies particularly NEMA and FEMA that have supported us to rescue not less than 37 lives.

“It is unfortunate that we lost two lives. I will appeal to the Permanent Secretary to make sure that funds are raised to pay the hospital bills of those who were rescued so that we do not lose any more people, and this should be done immediately.

“Secondly, these are the things we have been saying, nobody knows whose turn it will be, therefore when government says it will take action in areas we believe there are illegal developments or buildings that do not comply with the standard codes, it is not as if anybody has any personal vendetta but for me it is for us to do the right thing.

“I don’t know why it has taken so long that the FCTA has not resettled them and so we will take immediate action to see that the indigenes of these places are resettled and then government has to plan out this place.

“When government says take building plan, it is not to suffer anybody but to make sure that everyone is protected. Cities are planned to forestall this kind of occurrences. Imagine buildings without approval. I will ask that we must identify and arrest the owner of this property. It is very important.

“Government will, of course, take over this area and make sure no further development is carried out here. I want all the stakeholders here to please work with government in the interest of everybody. No one has come here to say I like A, I don’t like B.

“I know sometimes government’s decisions may not be too comfortable with the people, but in the long run, it is in the interest of the people. Now we are all gathered here and none of us is happy we are here.

“These are the things we are trying to forestall. Again I sympathize with those who lost dear lives, while government will pick up the bills of all those in the hospital. We will also support the rescue efforts and ensure that they get to the last level and rescue everyone still trapped in the rubble”.

Confirming the development to journalists in Abuja, the Director General of Federal Emergency Management Agency, Dr Abbass Iddriss said thirty-seven people have so far been rescued at the scene of the collapsed structure, while two fatalities were recorded.

He said the victims were evacuated to various medical facilities in Abuja.

“Thirty Seven persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to hospital, others reportedly still trapped. Rescue team and others are on ground. Rescue operations on but slowly due to ongoing rain”. They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble”, he added.

The DG commended the efforts of all stakeholders working hard manually to rescue trapped persons, including members of the community.

It was gathered that the victims were taken to various hospitals including the National Hospital, Asokoro, Nyanya, and Garki District Hospitals, Alliance hospital and Zenith hospital.

Also speaking, Director, Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, explained that the building had no planning approval because the area is meant for resettlement.

“The building is located within the Garki indigenous settlement. The building had two suspended floors, one used for commercial activities while the other floors were used as residential accommodation. The building caved in yesterday (Wednesday) and 37 persons were rescued.

“The status of the place is that it is not a planned area so the development had no planning approval. In fact, the area is meant for resettlement from here to Apo resettlement town.”

By: Ike Philip Abiagom & Benson Nwoko

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]saba town, the capital territory of Delta State, the home of late retired educationist, Community leader and philanthropist per excellence, Ogbueshi James Okechukwu Ndah ,Diokpa of Ogbe -Ogo village, was agog with carnival celebrations, as men women, youths, dancing groups turned out in full, glowing splendour, to receive the body of the late phenomenal elder statesman, as he arrived home for a befitting funeral rites of passage to his final testing place, worthy and deserving of a outstanding man and one of the greatest personages of his generation.
The joyous and pulsating rhymes of drums and gongs, the throbing music of trumpets and trombones, the exhilarating songs and dexterous dances and a breathtakingly colourful regatta parade all blended in seamless panoply.

They evoked the beauty and heritage of rich Ahaba cultural displays, all captured in a kaleidoscope of colours, as the pastoral ambience of the community, Asaba celebrated the return of Diokpa of Ogbe-Ogo village, a beloved scion of the Ndah dynasty and a warrior and defender of the pride and quintessence of the Anioma essence in contemporary, post-modern epoch.

Asaba town exploded in cascade of unfettered joy and exuberant celebrations with the arrival of the body of late Ogbueshi James Okechukwu Ndah in his golden casket on the Shore Front, which was heralded with the booming release of several well loaded cannons that shook the ground to it’s very foundations to signify that indeed a great man has returned home victoriously.

Ogbueshi James Okechukwu Ndah(Diokpa of Ogbe -Ogo village, Asaba) who joined his ancestors on May 23rd, 2023,laid to rest in Asaba, his home town. In a sermon during a requiem mass at Zappa Catholic Church,Asaba, the officiating Reverend father, said Ogbueshi James Okechukwu Ndah led a good life that touched humanity positively.

He said people should live right and impact others positively in order to attract the mercies of God even at death and make haven. He said though the loss of a loved one was painful, death was sacrosanct and must come at the will of the creator, God.

”So, we have the duty to live right because we can only be assured of eternal rest with God based on how we lived our lives.

”There are two realities: one is to be born and the other is to die. We shall be remembered for the good or bad that we did while we lived,” he said.

Mrs Akindele nee Elumelu lost a Majestic mother

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Ezinne (Mrs) Anna Kanebi Elumelu nee Nzekwue

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ama Elumelu is a woman whose departure would be greatly missed. “She was so humble and a woman of wisdom, who brought up her children in a God fearing way”. In my last encounter with her last year, Mama gracefully and affectionately pronounced her daughter’s name with a stock phrase: “Nkem Amuna Elumelu,” – Tonia the daughter of Elumelu and wife of Prince Akindele, and majestically combined it with a fitting motherly eulogy and prayer, as I observed with keen interest, the inspiring manner in which Ezinne (Mrs) Anna Kanebi Elumelu nee Nzekwue greeted her daughter in late june 2022. Her response was with such a calm, humble, friendly and happy demeanour. Status means nothing when you know how to respect your parents.

When mama returned to her residence in Ibusa from her London visit, mama ensured she greeted every one of us with warm affection.

Interestingly, Mama’s house was where daughter Mrs Tonia Akindele who came from London had scheduled to meet the Community Newspaper Publishers from Asaba, and I was an observer in the team that included my dear brother and colleague Peter Legacy. Writing about it means I did not take that happenstance lightly. As an Ibusa boy, it triggered something special in me.

That beautiful encounter left me with a lasting mental impression, and made me to understand that Ezinne (Mrs) Anna Kanebi Elumelu nee Nzekwue was a special woman knowledgeable in the mystery of the word of God and one who understood times and seasons. Mama must have known that “God does not deal with mankind as a loosely disordered aggregation of individuals,” and that “lineage is thus a cardinal component in God’s continuation of His covenant with mankind,” explained Gic Serry. The Elumelu lineage meant a lot to her and it must be preserved.

So, in addition to the fitting and beautiful celebration of the life and times of Mama Elumelu, a quintessential mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who died at 84, there is something unique that young mothers and aspiring mothers or parents can learn from her to propel their children to greatness: “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Deuteronomy 6:7. Indeed, the prayer of a righteous woman avails much and it is the Lord’s secret weapon.

Noticeably, she never stopped calling her “Nkem Amuna,” even after praying her to present position and until her death. It was an encouragement that will constantly remind her to “always remember the daughter of whom you are.” You never can tell how much the majestic eulogy and fervent prayers of a mother can make a man or woman to pursue limitless possibilities. That is why you often hear from people talk about a successful woman or man as one “who has his or her mother behind like a hunchback.” It is a popular talk in Nigeria communities.

Ezinne (Mrs) Anna Kanebi Elumelu nee Nzekwue knew the importance of adopting this elegant approach to greeting her daughter (I supposed all the children), for them to possibly: “understand the worth of the lineage, develop a sense of honour and pride, and also to bring out the best in them.” When the blind beggar called: “Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me!” in Luke 18:38, our Lord Jesus Christ stood and attended to his need. The Canaanite woman cried and said “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed” in Matthew 15:22. He answered her. The manner of these calls were very special to Jesus.

According to Wikipedia, “Matthew begins by calling Jesus the son of David, indicating his royal origin, and also son of Abraham, indicating that he was an Israelite; both are stock phrases, in which son means descendant, calling to mind the promises God made to David and to Abraham.” This is significant, and it is a virtue every mother, father and parent should learn to adopt. Definitely, Mama Elumelu must have made a success of her family by learning from the life of our saviour Jesus Christ and other historical contexts in the Bible.

When you look at how Mrs Tonis Akindele has handled people around her and how she has consistently dared to be different, you cannot but see that motherly touch of kindness and love, which has continued to inspire her to be outstanding. Although I have refrained from writing to praise her efforts and love towards people around, because to whom much is given much is also expected, however, I cannot in good conscience write about Mama Elumelu, without saying the obvious about her daughter, the beloved daughter Mrs Tonia Akindele, Co-Founder, The Light Diabetes Organisation. She has been truly remarkable. This one is about Mama. I will certainly write about her in the nearest future, especially about the enviable leadership role she provided in the health sector especially on Diabetes patients in Delta State.

Let us celebrate the Majestic Mamam Elumelu, a truly remarkable and quintessential mother whose transition to heaven, like the Comet, was equally majestic. She was truly an inspiring mother who made her home open to everyone, while her hospitality gave a sense of belonging to those who crossed her path. As a family-oriented woman, she was a beautiful soul, most loving and caring, compassionate and humble, understanding and frank. She is a mother of mothers.

Although the loss of a loving mother is a painful loss to bear, but the Elumelus must take heart and find solace in the understanding that death is inevitable, while Mama’s departure must be seen as the ascension of a saint. Mama lived a focused and fulfilled life with the gracious hope of eternal life. She gave her family exceptional memories too beautiful to forget.

On behalf of my family and the entire members of Association of Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria(ACNPN), I write to convey to the entire family of the Elumelus our heartfelt condolences on the passing unto glory of your dearly beloved matriarch. No matter how old we get, we still need our mothers. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May God Almighty grant the entire family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Good night Mama Elumelu, mother of mothers( NNE OHA).
