Cooperative Society is a breeding ground for employers of labour and wealth creators- Okeze

PST. Chukwudi Idowu Okeze

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he significance of the 15th Annual Lecture/Award Ceremony of the Association of Community Newspaper Publishers Of Nigeria (ACNPN),Delta State Council, was Co-operative Society, Model Palliative for Self -Reliance, Economic Growth and Industrialization. That was the subject matter as the Internal Auditor of Federal Cooperative College Oji-River, Enugu State, Pst. Okeze Idowu Daniel took the Community Newspaper Publishers and Nigerians on a journey as to how they can legitimately become wealth creators and employers of labour.

Okeze, who was the guest lecturer on the occasion and whose lecture focused on Co-operative Society, Model Palliative for Self -Reliance, Economic Growth and Industrialization said it was no longer news that government can no longer provide jobs for the teeming population of Nigerian youths; hence the need for young Nigerians to look inwards to discover innate capabilities and subject same to procedural training for acquisition of requisite skills for self-development and self-empowerment purposes.

Okeze emphasized that Cooperative Society was a veritable means of conquering dependence on non-existent white-collar jobs, saying that the Cooperative Society is a breeding ground for employers of labour and wealth creators. That the time has come for people to look inwards to find out what they need to do or what they can do to add to the growth and development of the country vis-a-vis personal development and growth.
The essence of the guest lecture was to have a paradigm shift by steering the minds of the Community Publishers and journalist towards being self-reliant, self-employed, self-sustained and their own boss. That the feat must not wait, but must be achieved while they were in the publishing business. That it is only by being an entrepreneur and owning a small business that they can achieve it. That they should begin to think of what business they can start as Community Newspaper Publishers which has the potential to be fully developed. The guest lecturer was of the opinion that Nigeria is still the best country in the world one can live in despite every odds, adding that small business is the solution to acute unemployment, poverty eradication, rapid economic growth as well as productive employment. That the likes of Coscharis, Ifeanyi Ubah, Mike Adenuga, Innoson, and many other famous Nigerian entrepreneurs have demonstrated that rewards in life are the true results of imagination.

We place Premium on Education in Delta – Oborevwori …as NUC lauds Delta for sustainable educational devt.

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]elta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Monday, said the State Government has placed premium on education to keep students of the State on track and focused. Governor Oborevwori stated this when he received on courtesy visit officials of the National University Commission, NUC led by its Acting Executive Secretary, Mr. Chris Maiyaki in his office in Government House, Asaba.

He thanked the NUC for approving the three new universities for the state, saying the establishment of the new universities was well justified hence the House of Assembly he presided over didn’t waste time in passing the bills.

Governor Oborevwori, said: “When we received the bill for the three universities, we looked at the justifications for three universities and we found out that they had the staff and infrastructure.

“They had subvention but the students were not there because the NCE programmes were no longer attractive to them.

“Where we had about 900 staff in the then College of Education, Agbor, you cannot even find 1,000 students and what we provide there is enough to run a full-fledged university.

“The money used in running the College is also the same thing to run Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma where I graduated from and they have over 15,000 students yet we can’t get even 1,000 at the College of Education, Agbor.

“So we didn’t waste time to approve the bill. Moreover, that period we had over 25,000 Deltans that passed JAMB and were qualified for university education but the universities couldn’t admit more than 5,000.

“So what happens to the remaining 20,000 students? They have to wait for another year again? And we said no its a very brilliant idea to upgrade three existing higher institutions into full-fledged universities and we had to pass the bills.

“I must commend NUC for approving the three universities for Delta State. I want to assure you that as a government we will continue to provide whatever it takes to make the universities great.

“Here in Delta State we take education very seriously, because you may acquire anything on this earth, it will go but education will remain with you till death.

“Here in Delta we value education because by the time you train your children, they will not be involved in crime, they will be focused in life.

“So education is another way of reducing crime and since I came in we have been in touch with them and all that is necessary in terms of staffing and infrastructure would be provided.

“Delta is peaceful and everywhere is beautiful but if you see any road that is not good in Delta State just know that it is a federal road.

“We are taking care of our state roads and even intervening in some federal roads like the over 147km Ughelli/ Asaba Road dualisation project which am very sure would be completed by next year”.

Earlier in his remarks, the Acting Executive Secretary of NUC, Mr. Chris Maiyaki, commended Delta State Government for its contributions to sustainable educational development in the state and country.

Maiyaki explained that the visit was coming at a time when the calls for the reinvention of higher education system was “getting louder and louder by the day”.

He congratulated the Delta State Government for being very educational friendly government and for being the state with the highest number of state-owned universities in the country.

“Your Excellency, we like to congratulate your government for being so educationally-friendly and the information we have is that the university we are visiting was founded when you were the Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

“It was during your time that having appended your signature that we accepted and granted licences to the University of Delta, Agbor, the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro and the Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai-Asaba,” he said.

He said the NUC was vested by law with the vital and strategic responsibility of orderly development of university education, the general coordination and regulation of the sub-sector.

He said the visit was crucial and pivotal because the result will enable the University admit students into the programmes visited.

“We carry out that vital assignment through the monitoring of implementation of minimum standards, licence of private universities, conducting resource verification and accreditation of courses among others.

“We are here to carry out resource verification of academic programmes at the University of Delta, Agbor, to ascertain the quality and the quantity of the physical facilities, the human resources, the ICT deployments, the learning resources in hard and soft copies and of course the atmosphere for learning.

“This visit is crucial and very pivotal because the result emanating from this visit will enable the University admit students into the programmes we have visited.

“We like to thank you for the sustainable funding and support that you have extended to this University and indeed all other institutions of higher learning in Delta.

“Delta State is the only state that has four state universities in the country and this goes to show the importance that you attach to university education in Delta State.

“Delta is blessed and endowed with material, human and natural resources and having four state universities underpins the premium that you attach to university education.

“Your continued support to these universities would be a legacy to your government and a collective benefit to be shared for the posterity of Delta State.

“We are here to conduct resource verification for Basic Medical Sciences and Medicine, Law, Education, Agricultral Economics and if you look at the profile of these programmes, they are very capital intensive.

Crude oil theft: How ‘Tompolo’ allegedly “saves” Nigeria $43.2m daily

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]apt. Warredi Enisuoh has disclosed Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd, a private security firm owned by Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, save Nigeria over $43.2 million on a daily basis.

Enisuoh, who is the Executive Director of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd., made the disclosure at the maiden Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) annual lecture on Wednesday in Lagos.

Enisuoh while highlighting the crucial roles of private security operators disclosed that dealers in crude oil theft plant Closed-Circuit Television cameras in creeks to monitor their illicit activities.

He said there were places where grass may not grow for the next 100 years because of crude oil spill caused by these perpetrators.

“In the past, these operators utilised fire to process the crude oil but they realised that security operators have drones and night vision capabilities to see the fire trails

“So, they moved to electricity. When they realised we discovered their illicit activities with electric, they translated to phosphoric acid.

“They pour the crude oil into several drums and pour phosphoric acid and wait for six hours for the acid to convert the crude to diesel that will be fetched from the top,” he said.

Enisuoh, a former Director of Shipping Development at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, noted that the perpetrators of crude oil theft moved away from the land areas to the creeks to attack oil well heads.

“They connect hoses from the wellheads into their storage. These transactions usually take place at night, as they go to the wellheads with canoes to fetch crude oil without minding the pollution or possibility of fire outbreak.

“If the pressure isn’t strong enough, they use a reservoir to fetch the oil. Some of these oil connections flow through cassava farms and farm settlements,” he said.

Speaking on the activities of private security operators in Secure Anchorage Area (SAA), Enisuoh wondered why a nation would carve out a portion on water like a land and sell it to somebody.

“With SAA, a vessel is entering the place and you say no you cannot enter here because you did not pay.

“However, the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea declared the right of passage on the waters for vessels? Nigeria is a signatory to that law, so I am sorry if I made mistakes at that time with my conviction about SAA

“Nonetheless, I still stand by it. I will never ever entertain the situation in my country where people will pay to access the waters,” he said.

TNG reports Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd. is a private security contractor with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd.

Meanwhile, in his welcome address, the President of MARAN, Mr Godfrey Bivbere, expressed concern over huge crude oil theft recorded in Nigeria; and the concomitant adverse effects it had on the national economy.

Bivbere noted that this had reportedly led to the gradual but increasing dwindling economic fortunes of the country.

“While MARAN is of the view that the establishment of the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) Maritime Collaboration Forum for the Shared Awareness and Deconfliction had enabled industry partners within the region to connect and interface on the right strategies to raise the bar in tackling these challenges.

“l am constrained to say that the responses are not achieving set targets, effectively and efficiently.

“The International Maritime Bureau report of July 2023 confirmed that the GoG witnessed a surge in maritime incidents in 2023, with five such incidents in the first quarter and nine in the second quarter.

“Out of these, 12 were classified as armed robberies and two as piracy, predominantly targeting anchored vessels within the region,” he said.

Also in his goodwill message, the former President Indigenous Shipowners Association of Nigeria, Mr Isaac Jolapamo, decried the state of security on the waterways.

According to him, there is a lot to be said about security of Nigerian waters before it extends to the Gulf of Guinea and this dates back to over 40 years.

Jolapamo decried the pitiable state of the present Nigerian shipowner, stressing that shipowners should be heard and not seen.

The event was attended by several maritime bigwigs including; the Chairman, Integrated Oil and Gas Limited, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho; former President, Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Prince Olayiwola Shittu; President General, Maritime Worker’s Union of Nigeria, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju; and President, National Association of Master Mariners, Capt. Tadjudeen.

Others were the President of NISA, Mr Sola Adewunmi; former President of National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, Chief Eugene Nweke and the Publisher, Shipping Position Newspaper, Mr Sesan Onilemo, among others.

Birthday Celebration to our Amazing Youth Leader Peter Okocha

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Comrade Peter Okocha

[dropcap]G[/dropcap]reatness is a property for which no man can receive credit too soon; it must be possessed long before it is acknowledged.”When one of the world’s greatest thinkers, Ralph Waldo Emerson handed down the above words of wisdom, those he had in mind were certainly the likes of Peter Okocha (Bobo Nkiti)! .
For the trail-blazing Politician and Business mogul from Ibusa, Delta State, it is certainly impossible to gloss over his attributes for greatness. He is the embodiment of cerebral articulation, the essence of unparalleled philanthropy, the epitome of intellection and breathtaking simplicity, the personification of undiluted humanness, the perfect example of Political leadership symbolism, the paragon of idealism, the soul of humanity, the heart of warrior, a perfect gentleman.

Peter Okocha (Bobo Nkiti) is one of those very few good men; a true philanthropist, an accomplished Politician, businessman, An Iconic Figure, A leader, A promoter of Peace in whom I am well pleased ,a man of valour, the bringer of rain. In the gallery of great leaders and great men, he is without doubt, a rare masterpiece. Anyone who encounters him would love to associate with him for his candour, courage and forthrightness. As a human being, his humility and modesty is second to none. As a Politician, he is sound and engaging.

Peter Okocha (Bobo Nkiti),he means different things to different people; to his wife and children, he is a loving husband and a kind daddy, while to us his admirers he is known as the Youth Leader Strategist but his detractors always erroneously see him as an Obstacle because of his rising profile in Politics and acceptance by the grassroots.
Peter Okocha (Bobo Nkiti) is not only the Pride of Okocha’s but also the Pride of the People of Ibusa for whom he had waged countless political wars for and won virtually all, just like the Greek mythological Odyssey who fought and won difficult battles in History. Indeed the birthday celebration of this digital Youth Leader of our time had been useful and Resourceful for his service to humanity. VIOs don’t have the right to ask for vehicle worthiness – Appeal Court

[dropcap]V[/dropcap]ehicle Inspection Office (VIO) have no business inspecting vehicle papers on Nigerian roads, a Delta State Appeal Court has judged.  The judgement follows a long-drawn case that started in 2014 involving Kunle Edun, the former publicity secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, in Delta State.

The case – a lawsuit challenging the agency’s requirement for roadworthiness from private owners – was eventually concluded in April 2021, after a notice came up to argue at the appeal, preceding an Ugheli High Court judgement in 2014. Edun won the appeal.

Edun recalled that in 2014 while driving a major road in Ughelli, Delta state, to inspect a plot of land with his client, he came across some sort of obstruction placed on the road by the VIO officers. He was stopped, asked to identify himself, which he did, and was then asked for his vehicle’s roadworthiness certificate, which he said was wrong for them to ask and was delayed for eight to ten minutes.

Edun also noted that the VIOs have no business stopping vehicles to ask for any documents.

“The fact is that they have no right to even be on a public road purporting to be asking for roadworthiness certificates. As of the time of the renewal of my vehicle particulars, if they want to check whether the vehicle is actually roadworthy, that is where they should do that, rather than get on the roads to harassing commuters and asking for documents,” Edun said.

Edun furthered sue for stopping and detaining him for 10 minutes.

“For daring to stop me and detain me for 10 minutes, I will take it up.’ I considered what they did as harassment and I didn’t like it,” he added.

According to him, they initially believed it to be a joke before challenging the move in court. Finally, the court ruled in his favour and stated, first and foremost, that VIOs had absolutely no business being on the road. Vehicle stops for document requests are not something that should be done.

“At the end of the day, the court delivered judgment in my favour and declared that VIOs – or whatever name they are called – have no business even being on the road, first and foremost.

“The judge was particular that their work and duty should be done at their offices, not on the road. The judge said, ‘You don’t inspect vehicles on the road; you inspect vehicles at your workshop or office, and the best time to do that is during annual vehicle licence renewal.’ The judge also said that they had no authority to even stop any private vehicle, demanding any document whatsoever,” Edun noted in the interview.

Lucky Abuah: Real Estate Guru and Uncommon Philanthropist

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Mr Lucky Blessing O. Abuah,
CEO, Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ucky Blessing Odiakachukwu Abuah, the Chairman of Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd,a real estate development company, has not just carved a niche for himself as one of the biggest players in real estate business in Delta State and Nigeria, but also a philanthropist per excellence.

The secret to living is giving. In essence, by contributing to the well-being of others, you are unarguably creating a better society. This is an ethos Lucky Blessing Odiakachukwu Abuah, the Chairman of Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd, a real estate development company, lives by.

Abuah demonstrates the exact meaning of philanthropy by making a positive impact on the causes that matter to the people. Not only has he donated a substantial chunk of his wealth for the betterment of the society, he has also put in place a charge for other ultra-rich individuals to do the same in his state Delta and beyond.

Bullet Empire as he is fondly called by friends, has donated immensely through the Lucky Abuah Foundation, a charity organisation he established purposely to give scholarship to the indigent students from primary to university level. The widows are not left out.

Records show that Abuah has successfully financed the graduation of many youths through skill acquisition and other professionals through the Lucky Abuah Foundation. He is one of the pillars of youth empowerments in Ibusa Community located at Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State and he has shown commitment and dedication to curb illiteracy and poverty in the town through his foundation.

For him, the three major purpose of existence on earth is to live a life of divine abundance; worship and love God as well as love our neighbours as ourselves.

Some of the Bible passages he lives by are; ‘and God blessed them, and said unto them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth,’ taken from Genesis 1:28.

Also Matthew 22:37-39 establishes the fact that the two greatest commandments are: (1) “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” and (2) “Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself”.

Despite his love for philanthropy, he doesn’t like to make headlines for his charitable donations and other achievements, rather, he has registered his name in the heart of his people through his educational and poverty alleviation initiatives. Recently his foundation supplied school uniforms to all the primary schools in Ibusa and its environs.

Aside that, he has also been able to actualize a whole lot in the real estate industry especially in Delta. His company Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd is an indigenous and one of Nigeria’s leading Real Estate firms offering services in civil construction and property development.

Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd can boost of an impressive portfolio of historical real estate landmarks in Nigeria. In order to provide various flexible plans on all its properties, Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd finishes to taste to meet both medium and high Income earners as the company intends to bridge the gap in housing deficit across Nigeria.

Since the birth of the company, Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd’s strategy is to build trusting relationships by keeping to promises and even exceeding clients expectations with its properties spread across Delta State.

Abuah even while growing up, apart from having a big dream, has always loved to be unique and outstanding in whatever he does. As someone that has the people at heart, he knew he could never achieve his big dream with a white collar job, thus, he established himself to be able to participate and contribute to the development of his immediate community. Thus, he ventured into the real estate which was eventually how the birth of Hen-Ric Empire Garden Ltd came about.

Obviously, the philanthropist has been doing so well as he has become a big player in the real estate industry. As an outstanding real estate developer who can boost of quality and functional estates in prime locations at affordable prices, he has become someone to be reckoned with.

Having houses and estates scattered across Ibusa, Asaba and environs, Abuah’s company has grown to be classified among the first class and leading real estate companies in Delta and beyond.
Abuah’s entrepreneurial achievements, works of charity and philanthropy as well as community development have in the past few years earned him several honours and awards which includes the Nigerian Entrepreneurs Award of Excellence; the Africa Prize for Leadership Excellence as The Property Development Personality of the year; The Award of Outstanding Leadership Recognition & Inspirational Leadership.

The big one coming up this month of November at Asaba is the recognition by Association Community Newspaper Publishers of Nigeria(ACNPN), following Abuah’s outstanding contribution to the real estate industry in Delta State. He is to be honoured and decorated with the Award of Real Estate Person of the Year.
