[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has increased the cost of registration forms for 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

President Tinubu Gives Delta N9 Billion For Infrastructure and fuel subsidy palliative

President Bola Tinubu

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Presidency has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration has disbursed N9 billion to the 36 states of the Federation.

Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said N7 billion was disbursed to states for infrastructural development, while the remaining was for fuel subsidy palliative.

In a post on X, he said the revenue allocation from the Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, has been increased.

According to Onanuga: “The 36 Nigerian states have enjoyed unprecedented support from the Bola Tinubu presidency, having recently been given N7 billion each for infrastructure support, in addition to the N2 billion earlier given as fuel subsidy palliative.

“The revenue allocations to all the tiers of government by Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) have also been on the increase since June.

“State governors thus have no reason not to do a lot for their people, instead of the obsession with the centre. In spending money on roads and other infrastructure, many jobs will be created and people will have money to spend.

“Let the states therefore get cracking to give succour to our people. Let the mass media also monitor the states to ensure that the funds are wisely spent.”

Galloping Inflation Affecting Real Estate Development — REDAN, Oshimili North Chairman

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Engr. Emmanuel Oshia,
Chairman , Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria(REDAN), Oshimili North Chapter

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he new Chairman of Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, Oshimili North Chapter, Engr. Emma Oshia, Chairman of Emmalix Trade and Investment Ltd, said rising inflation is one of the chief bane of the country’s real estate sector and is becoming a worrying trend.

Engr. Oshia, made this known in an interview with Newsmen on Monday in Ibusa, where he called for the understanding of everyone. He appealed to all the government agencies responsible for regulating the economy to work extra hard for the benefit of the common man, adding that shelter was one major factor that could not be done without all over the world.

According to him, the cost of real estate development had skyrocketed, following the symptoms of the nation’s ailing economy.

He said, “Presently, all the factors that drive an increase in commodity prices in Nigeria, galloping inflation, volatile foreign exchange rate and cost of transporting goods from one point to another have all contributed to challenges confronting the real estate sector.

“Exchange rate in the country is not left behind as it is dwindling and increasing daily. This is a huge source of worry because this is a country where over 60 per cent of building materials are imported.”
Oshia noted that a recent survey on the prices of building materials showed how inflation had badly affected building materials.
He added, “The price of granite, sharp sand, aluminum roofing sheet, tiles, iron rods, hardwood timber, among others, keeps skyrocketing, leaving us to grapple and making the cost of real estate construction skyrocket.”

Oshia said, “In every economy, the real estate sector plays a pivotal role in the overall economic growth and development. This is why we, the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria(REDAN),Oshimili North Chapter, are urging the government to find ways of lessening the impact of inflation on the citizens and operators of the real estate sector.
“We find it very important to sensitise the general public and would-be buyers of real estate products of this unprecedented inflation affecting the real estate market and the economy in general as this may affect the cost of delivering housing projects, including off-plan sales.”

Move to recall anti-Fubara assembly lawmakers from Ogoni thickens

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]our members of the Rivers State House of Assembly may be the first casualties in the ongoing political war between the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

A group known as Ogoni Development Drive (ODD) said that it has begun the process to recall the four lawmakers over their alleged roles in the botched impeachment of Governor Fubara.

“ODD had on Nov. 10 issued a seven-day ultimatum to the four Ogoni lawmakers, who partook in the plot that attempted to serve an impeachment notice to Gov. Fubara.

“The four lawmakers, now suspended, were asked to apologise to the Ogoni people whom they represent and to Gov. Fubara for denigrating his exalted office or risk being recalled.

“Instead of heeding this advice and embracing the olive branch extended to them, they rather embarked on an egocentric escapade,” he said.

Lenu further said the lawmakers rather than heed the advice by ODD engaged in various meetings that purportedly plotted to unseat the governor.

“Gov. Fubara was collectively voted for by the entire Rivers people, and as such, the action by the lawmakers has not gone well with all men and women of conscience.

“It is illogical for the erring assembly members to think it is right to impeach an innocent governor for no just cause but wrong to recall them for erring against their constituents.

“The suspended lawmakers called the bluff of ODD ultimatum, and so, we have decided to carry out this recall process in earnest, to put our democracy aright,” he said.

“So far, the response from the aggrieved constituents has been very impressive, and we shall in a few weeks’ time complete the compilation of the required signatures.

“The signatures are required for INEC to call for a referendum, which shall be carried out in branches with strict security guidance, to abort any sinister counterplot against democracy.

“We know this process is not going to be easy, but we are ready to go all the way, to create a sense of responsibility in our elected leaders,” he said.

It will be recalled that 26 lawmakers on Oct. 30 proceeded to impeach Fubara but were stopped by four pro-Fubara lawmakers led by Ehie Edison (PDP-Ahoada East II).

Martins Amaewhule (Obio Akpor constituency) and a close ally of a former governor, was later ousted as Speaker and Ehie sworn in as the new Speaker. He insists that he is still the Speaker of the House of Assembly, resulting in some form of confusion over the office of the Speaker.

Fubara Risks Impeachment As 27 Rivers PDP Lawmakers Defect To APC

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n Rivers, 27 out of the 31 Lawmakers led the factional Speaker Martin Amaewhule, loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara this morning, Monday December 11,defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing division and crisis in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Sketchy reports have it that the Lawmakers defected on the floor of the Assembly singing “On your mandate…on your mandate” alluding to the campaign slogan of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

They said their reason for defecting is born out their desire to serve Rivers People better.

Immediately after the symbolic defection they entered a convoy of buses and zoomed off amidst tight security . They were all holding APC flags.

Our Correspondent reports that the Lawmakers defection further add complexities to the crisis and threats of the impeachment notice served on Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The coming days and weeks will reveal the open-ended drama.
