Why we held Flavour’s father’s funeral in Enugu, by Cubana Chief Priest

Cubana Chief Priest, a prominent businessman and socialite, has addressed the recent funeral of Flavour’s father, which took place in Enugu rather than their home state of Anambra.

He explained that the venue change was due to prevailing insecurity in the region, which he believes is a critical issue that needs urgent attention.

Cubana Chief Priest, who attended the funeral alongside other celebrities, used the occasion to call for unity among Southeasterners to tackle the insecurity challenge.

He emphasised that the region’s prosperity hinges on creating a safe and secure environment for its residents.

In a recent report by The Nation, he shared his personal experiences with insecurity, revealing that he relocated his business to  Lagos State due to fears of kidnapping and violence that have driven away customers from the EastCubana Chief Priest also expressed concern over the impact of insecurity on the region’s cultural heritage, noting that Flavour’s father’s funeral had to be held in Enugu instead of their ancestral home in Anambra.

He urged traditional leaders, religious leaders, and politicians to collaborate and find solutions to the insecurity crisis.

He said: “This amazing funeral was supposed to be happening in Umunze Anambra State but here we are in Enugu managing it. Umunne, we need to come together and fix this, it’s no longer interesting. We cannot destroy our own because we are being marginalised.

“We must uphold our glory by going back to our peaceful nature. We can only fight back if home is in order for proper planning. If this continues that means they have succeeded in disorganising us.

Obi Onyeobi was a living embodiment of wisdom and integrity – Senator Nwaoboshi

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

Most Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi (SPON),has mourned the passing of Iyase of Asaba. The former Secretary to Government and Head of the Civil Service of the defunct Bendel State, Obi Patrick Isioma Goodluck Onyeobi, the Iyase of Asaba and Diokpa of Idumuojei.

Nwaoboshi, in a statement, described the late Obi Onyeobi, the Iyase of Asaba as a consummate administrator and distinguished community leader, who deployed his intellect and resources for the service of humanity, his community, and country.

The late Obi Patrick Isioma Goodluck Onyeobi stands as an indomitable figure and a man whose life was proof of genuine love, wisdom and dedication to his family and community. His death has left a void not only in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him personally but also in the broader community that benefited from his wisdom, leadership, and untiring commitment to the betterment of humanity.

Obi Onyeobi was not merely a man of stature; he was a living embodiment of wisdom and integrity and had a way of making those around him feel valued, cherished and loved. His life was evidence of the enduring power of moral principles and ethical conduct.

He distinguished himself in the domains of academia, business, and Community leadership and stood as a steadfast pillar, an inspiration of light guiding others toward the path of virtue and excellence. His years were filled with experiences that had been distilled into nuggets of insight that he willingly shared with others. His guidance was sought after and cherished by many who sought his counsel, and his words of wisdom continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched.

“He was a beacon of excellence and espoused virtues of diligence and hard work. From his early days as a clerical officer at Western Region Civil Service, rising to a Permanent Secretary at Bendel State Civil Service between 1974 and 1983, and later as Head of Service and former Secretary to Government of the defunct Bendel State, his intellect and hard work stood him out, endearing him to all who came in contact with him.

“His demise is even more painful, particularly at this time when we still mourning the death of Asagba of Asaba. He will be remembered for his knack for excellence, his undying quest for truth and justice, and an abiding commitment to the development of his community and our dear nation. He will be sorely missed.

Senator Nwaoboshi commiserated with the Onyeobi family, as well as the people of Asaba, praying that God will grant all the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

DEMOCRACY DAY 2024: PROF HUMPHERY NWOSU, THE ARCHITECT OF NIGERIAN’S JUNE 12 ELECTION, 1993

The story of June 12 will not be complete without the mention of Prof. Humphery Nwosu. A BRAVE man From AJALLI, Anambra State who gave his heart and life against all odds for the love of democracy in Nigeria. He led the team that conducted the freest and fairest election in Nigeria, siting as the Chairman of the National Electoral Commisssion of Nigeria in the year 1993.

*WHO IS THE MAN PROF HUMPHREY NWOSU?*
Prof Nwosu was born on 2 October 1941, and became a Professor of Political Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. A first class degree holder and one of the best brains in the world. He served in the cabinet of Commodore Samson Emeka Omeruah, former governor of the old Anambra State, amongst other achievements, he helped traditional rulers to gain staffs of office , receive salaries, and settled intra and inter Community land and Chieftancy disputes. Also served as Commissioner for Agriculture in the same administration
He further served as Chairman of a Federal Technical Committee on the application of Civil Service Reforms in the local government service. He was appointed FEDECO Chairman in 1989 after his predecessor and teacher Prof Eme Awa  resigned due to a disagreement with Ibrahim Babangida.
*WHAT ARE THE KEY ROLES PROF HUMPHREY NWOSU PLAYED IN THE 1993 ELECTION*?
Prof Humphrey Nwosu was the Chairman of National Electoral Commission of Nigeria which conducted the 1993 12th June election, which was the freest and fairest election till date in the history of this country, in which Chief Moshood Abiola  presumed to be the winner of the election. Nwosu’s Commission introduced the novel Option A4 Voting System and the Modified Open Ballot system. He built the current headquarters of INEC and made the staff status pensionable , no longer ad hoc.
After the voting exercises of June 12 elections, Nwosu had released many of the election results when he was ordered to stop further announcement by then military regime. He was strategic in his further actions to defend this democracy we are all enjoying today.

*HOW PROF HUMPHREY NWOSU DEFENDED THE DEMOCRACY*
In the middle of the night of June 10, 1993, an Abuja High Court presided over by Justice Bassey Ikpeme, in breach of the relevant decree, ordered the electoral body to put on hold, the presidential election that was some 36 hours away to happen. The plaintiff in the case was an unregistered body known as Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) which consisted of a group of politicians generally believed to have government backing. Nwosu took the risk of his life and found his way in the morning uninvited to a meeting of the MILITARY COUNCIL, ASO VILLA to explain the grave consequences of Ikpeme’s indiscrete pronouncement. After intimidations and harrasment on Prof and other deliberations that took place at the uninvited meeting, it was then agreed that NEC could discountenance Ikpeme’s order and continue with its arrangements and preparations for the elections.
At the end of voting, when it became clear from the majority of the results already collated from the states, that the candidate of the then Social democratic Party (SDP) Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola could not be stopped from winning the contest, the then Chief Judge of Abuja, Justice Dahiru Saleh ordered NEC to halt the process. Again, Nwosu stormed the ASO Villa, but this time he found that the government had withdrawn support from him.
The then Attorney General of the Federation, (AGF) Clement Akpamgbo who gave Nwosu legal backing earlier, did not only ditch him but also ensured that a bench warrant to arrest Nwosu issued by the Chief Judge of Abuja was duly served. As from then, Nwosu became labeled as the problem, while his Electoral Commission was formally suspended forthwith. The only other option left to Nwosu was to seek judicial cover from the Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division headed by Justice Achike With no one else behind Nwosu except the Commission’s vibrant Director of Legal Services, Bukhari Bello along side with Chief Tony Ojukwu SAN, OFR, the current Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission. NEC drew attention to an earlier judgment by a higher court in which Oguntade JCA as he then was, established two main points.
The first was that where a court makes an order in a case where it lacked jurisdiction, the order was null and void; and second that it was unnecessary to go on appeal in such circumstance. This suggested that Nwosu had no business obeying the erroneous decisions of the lower courts. Interestingly, NEC was able to produce in Court, the COMPLETE RESULTS OF THE ELECTION  which he had been stopped from announcing and which confirmed the victory of MKO Abiola. The real problem was that some ambitious military fellows aided by a set of compromised politicians wanted to prolong military rule. At this point, government sensing that it might lose the case they decided to annul the election few hours to the judgment of the Court of Appeal.
Consequently, the winner of the election could not be declared. Unfortunately,as far as some few Nigerians were concerned, Nwosu’s electoral Commission was to blame for not disobeying the new court order since it was able to disobey the first order without realizing the differences between the two. No one blamed the infamous politicians in the Association for Better Nigeria. The only person to blame was Nwosu” and his TEAM. However, Prof Humphrey Nwosu has been vindicated and the truth is now out on how he defended the election he conducted and stood firmly for democracy to prevail.
This brings me to the question, *why would Prof. Humphrey Nwosu be so easily forgotten*? A man who made what is being celebrated today possible, a man who played a key role in what we celebrate today, a man who gave his all for the love of true democracy and still *31 years after the elections he conducted remained the best in the history of the Nation*
The good news is that PROFESSOR HUMPHREY NWOSU is a hero that made possible what we celebrate today as democracy day in Nigeria, a true patriot.

*CONCLUSION*
PROF, THE WORLD KNOWS THAT YOU’RE AN ICON, AN INSTITUTION, AN EMBODIMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE FACE OF DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIAN.
NIGERIANS WILL NEVER FORGET THE ROLE YOU PLAYED FOR US TO HAVE DEMOCRACY WE ARE ENJOYING TODAY.YOU ARE INDEED THE HERO OF DEMOCRACY.
WISHING LONG LIFE AND GOD’S BLESSINGS TO AGE GRACEFULLY AND HISTORY WILL NEVER FORGET YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
*HAPPY DEMOCRACY DAY 2024*

Democracy Day 2024: Senator Nwaoboshi Gives Message Of Hope To Nigerians

By : Ike Philip Abiagom

Most Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi (SPON)

Most Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi(SPON), has given Nigerians, especially people in his constituency, a message of hope, asking them to consolidate the gains of democracy.

Nwaoboshi also charged citizenry to reflect on the journey into achieving the democracy that the country is enjoying today and see the need to celebrate those that paid the supreme price for the collective benefits, even though there are still challenges.

June 12 has become a metaphor in our country for free, fair and credible elections and a memorial for the day in which Nigerians stoutly rose above ethnic and religious sentiments to deliver a pan-Nigerian mandate for the revival of hope in their country unity and attainment of its great potential.

The heroic demonstration of patriotism by the Nigerian voters on June 12, 1993 will continue to inspire generations of their compatriots to promote national unity and defend democracy in Nigeria.

Having come this far in our journey as a nation, we have no reason to doubt our ability to govern ourselves and attain our great potential as a nation. Our uninterrupted practice of democracy in the last 25 years attests that democratic civil rule is taking roots and becoming firmly entrenched in Nigeria.

While there is a consensus that democracy is the best form of government, it is also important to stress that democracy is a process that evolves with time. We should, therefore, continue to have faith in the capacity of our system to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people.

“Despite imperfections and challenges, I urge us not to throw our hands up in despair but rather continue to seek ways of consolidating gains of democracy in Nigeria.

“Every great nation today at one time or the other have had their moments of turmoil. They overcame because leaders and other fellow country men and women believed in their country.
As we celebrate our Democracy on this unique day, I wish Nigeria eternal peace, unity and prosperity. May God bless Nigeria.

Nigerian fans blast Super Eagles Coach, Finidi George over Eagles’ defeat to Benin

The Super Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Benin in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Monday has sparked a wave of criticism directed at the head coach, Finidi George, with fans questioning his tactics and player selection.

The loss, which saw Nigeria fall behind Benin and South Africa in their qualifying group, has left the team’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup hanging.

Reacting to the disappointing result, DISTINGUISHED KPMG LinkedIn Everest @novieverest via X urged fans to remain positive, saying, “Instead of spoiling the image of the Super Eagles just because you don’t like Coach Finidi George, why not pray for the Super Eagles? Learn to be positive and pray.”

However, many others were less forgiving, with Alabi @the_Lawrenz lambasting the decision to appoint George, whose “only managerial experience was Enyimba FC.”

Alabi wrote, “We are not serious as a country… Super Eagles will miss yet another World Cup. I’m tired.”

JUST KINGS @JustKingss went a step further, stating, “Finidi George will probably go down as the worst Nigerian Coach ever.”

The defeat was particularly difficult to swallow for some, given Nigeria’s recent history against Benin.

SportsDokita (Odogwu) @Sports_Doctor2 pointed out, “We lost to Benin Republic on a NEUTRAL ground in Ivory Coast managed by our former coach Rohr. Omoh Finidi George this one is hard to take oooh, it’s a very bitter pill to swallow.”

Omo Kogi (Yagba) @Oladapomikky1 expressed disappointment at the squandered opportunity for Nigeria’s “golden generation of attackers” to experience the World Cup, saying, “In a group, where we have Benin, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria, they are lying 5th… Finidi George no try at all.”

The criticism extended to George’s team selection and tactics, with Frank The Writer @FrankWriter1 questioning why foreign coaches often fare better with the Super Eagles, writing, “I think he should just quit. He’s not fielding the right players. He lacks tactics. But why do foreign coaches always doing better?”

As the fallout from the Benin defeat continues, the pressure mounts on Finidi to turn the team’s fortunes around and keep their World Cup dreams alive.

FERMA Seeks Delta Govt’s Continued Partnership In Federal Road Maintenance

The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has solicited the continued intervention of  the Delta State Government in the maintenance of Federal roads in the state

The Delta State Federal Road Maintenance Engineer, Onimogo Lukman Okulola, made the appeal when he led the management team of the Federal Agency on a courtesy visit to the Chief of Staff to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Hon Prince Johnson Erijo, at Government House, Asaba.

Engr. Okulola noted that the State Government had been committed to making Federal roads across the state motorable, citing the construction of the Asaba – Ughelli dual carriage way, the palliative rehabilitation of the Agbor – Abraka – Eku and the Benin – Sapele road.

He said the Agency was prepared to deliver on its mandate, pointing out that the visit was to familiarize the Government of Delta State with the activities and challenges of FERMA in the state and seek closer collaboration.

Responding, the Chief of Staff to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Hon Prince Johnson Erijo, thanked the FERMA team for the visit, which he said would help to strengthen the relationship between the State Government and the Agency.

Hon Erijo said government had taken up the challenge of making Federal roads in the state motorable because it believed that Deltans needed the roads to go to their places of choice, even as the Federal Government was not forthcoming with making refunds to the state

He advised the Agency to collaborate with the State Ministry of Works, Ministry of Urban Renewal, Direct Labour Agency (DLA), Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Development Agency, to ensure a well coordinated road maintenance in the state

BREAKING: Fidelity Bank acquires Union Bank UK

Afreximbank said it has disbursed 40 million dollars Intra-African Investment Facility to Fidelity Bank Nigeria Plc to support Fidelity Bank’s acquisition and recapitalisation of Union Bank United Kingdom.

A statement issued by Mr Vincent Musumba, Manager, Communications and Events, Afeximbank, on Monday said the acquisition was part of Fidelity Bank’s international expansion.

Musumba said the facility was provided in two tranches of 20 million dollars each.

He said the first tranche of the facility enabled Fidelity to part-refinance the acquisition of a 100 per cent equity stake in Union Bank UK.

Musumba said the second tranche was used to support its recapitalisation via the injection of additional equity into the acquired bank, as approved by the United Kingdom’s regulator.

“With this acquisition, Fidelity Bank can birth a new pan-African financial institution capable of providing correspondent banking and offshore banking services to banks in Africa and servicing the banking needs of Africans in the diaspora.

“The acquisition is expected to contribute to Africa’s economic growth and development by increasing intra- and extra-African trade finance and trade flows between Nigeria and the UK.

“It will also support the integration of the African Diaspora into regional and continental supply chains and enable small and medium-sized enterprises across the continent to improve their export competitiveness and light export manufacturing capabilities.”

Musumba quoted Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice-President, Intra-African Trade Bank and Export Development Bank, Afreximbank, as saying the disbursement of the facility was part of Afreximbank’s effort to promote African control and ownership of capital while improving intra-African trade and investments.

“Fidelity Bank’s acquisition of Union Bank UK aligned with Afreximbank’s Intra-African Investment Facility. It was a significant milestone for the institutions, reinforcing African ownership and control within the global financial landscape.

“By supporting this strategic transaction, we are not only bolstering Nigeria’s banking sector but also fostering greater financial integration between Africa and its Diaspora.”

Awani said the initiative was a testament to Afreximbank’s commitment to enhancing intra-African trade, promoting economic stability and driving forward the objectives of Agenda 2063 for a prosperous and self-reliant Africa.

She said Afreximbank’s bank acquisition strategy, empowered African entities to acquire financial assets, divested by foreign entities in Africa and the diaspora.

“This is also in line with the bank’s Diaspora Strategy which seeks to promote and finance the integration of the African Diaspora with the rest of the continent.”

Awani said through the facility, Fidelity was extending its services to the UK, in particular, to Africans and African-owned businesses in the UK, including products to support diaspora investments.

Musumba quoted Dr Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director/CEO, as saying, we are very thankful to Afreximbank for supporting our expansionary initiatives for international growth.

“It is, indeed, the result of a strong partnership between the two institutions over the years that has produced this good outcome.

“The refinancing of the Union Bank (UK) acquisition by Afreximbank will unlock additional value and help create a scalable and more sustaining service franchise that will support trade businesses in Africa and diaspora banking.” (Text, excluding headline: NAN)

Onitsha, Ochanja Roundabout Turned To Water Fountain, From Refuse Dum

The Onitsha Ochanja Roundabout in Anambra State for over 20 years known for hosting a mountain of refuse and animal carcasses, with deplorable roads like Ozomagala Street, Iweka Road, Menax Street and other adjoining roads abandoned for over 30 years have been a major source of worry and concern for residents, traders and commuters.

But with the power of transformation which the Governor of the State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo often talks about, the area has been turned into an enchanting roundabout with a functional water fountain. That is transformation in practical term.

The Governor has equally impacted the same Midas touch in many other areas of the state’s social infrastructure within the past two years.

Most significant are the labyrinth of solid roads, pipe-borne water with public taps and healthcare centres among others which he recently commissioned, mostly in parts of the State that have not seen such facilities since Nigeria became a sovereign country.

The transformation of Ochanja Roundabout has not only improved the aesthetics of the area, it has drastically revved up the quality of economic activities that go on in the environment and to a large extent guarantee good health for the residents, traders and passersby as against the previous nauseating stench that emanated from the mountain of refuse.

The nerve-wracking traffic gridlock that was a regular nightmare for commuters has become a thing of the past. There is now a free and smooth flow of vehicular traffic conveying people and their goods, to and from the area.

“One good turn deserves another,” is a common refrain. It is therefore important that traders and residents of the area should take ownership of the transformation for it to be sustained.

Already, reports have it that some petty traders, particularly “ọkịrịka” sellers, immediately swooped on the just completed roundabout to display their wares while others, intrigued by the novelty have gone there to wash their limbs and different items.

This is unacceptable as the roundabout and water fountain is not meant for that. There is therefore need for residents and those trading around the area to ensure that no one, in whatever guise, should misuse or abuse the facility.

The roundabout and water fountain is meant to facilitate smooth traffic flow and beautify the place. It shouldn’t be used as public tap or extension of market stalls or to display wares, as OCHA Brigade has been directed to ensure compliance.

VIO officials can arrest traffic offenders, FRSC clarifies

whatsapp sharing buttonThe Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) says Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) have legal backing to arrest traffic offenders depending on the state within which they operate.

Bisi Kazeem, deputy corps marshal, disclosed the development in a statement on Wednesday, while reacting to a comment by IL Ibrahim, FRSC central business district commander in Abuja.

According to the statement, Ibrahim had said VIO personnel, also known as Directorate of Road Traffic Service (DRTS), and state traffic agencies, do not have the right to arrest road traffic violators, including overloaded vehicles and motorists caught using phones while driving.

Kazeem said Ibrahim’s comment does not in any way reflect the corporate or general position of the FRSC and called on the public to disregard the remark.

He added that Dauda Biu, FRSC corps Marshal, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of Ibrahim to the FRSC national headquarters for necessary administrative and disciplinary actions.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps wishes to make a pertinent clarification regarding the pronouncement by the Unit Commander, Central Business District Unit Command, Assistant Corps Commander IL Ibrahim,  that Vehicle Inspection Officers, otherwise known as Directorate of Road Traffic Services, do not have the right to arrest road traffic violators, including overloaded vehicles and motorists caught using phones while driving,” the statement reads.

“The general public is advised to disregard the statement as it had no approval of the Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu and does not in anyway reflect the corporate or general position of the Corps.

“It is important for the public to know that the laws establishing VIOs/State Traffic Management Agencies give them the statutory mandate to make arrests on different offences depending on the state within which they operate.

“As such, the agencies should be given the maximum cooperation for the enhancement of safety on our roads.

“On this note and in line with sustaining the Corps’ resolve that road safety is a collective responsibility, and in acknowledgement of the roles the State Traffic Management Agencies like the Vehicle Inspection Officers play in complementing the statutory responsibilities of the FRSC through enforcement of traffic laws.

“The Corps Marshal has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the Unit Commander to the national headquarters for necessary administrative and disciplinary actions.

“The public is admonished to always comply with all established traffic regulations and cooperate with security agencies deployed to maintain law and order on the highways, irrespective of their corporate mandate.”
