Hassan Bello at Stock Exchange as more investors indicate interest in Nigeria’s economy

The NSC boss was part of the closing Gong Ceremony and had a brief chat on market development with some management team present during his visit.    Meanwhile, the Secretary, Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), Dr Jumoke Oduwole has said that investors are beginning to show renewed interest in Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking on Thursday at an International Investment Conference organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Oduwole said: “Stock market rallied at 36 per cent since the beginning of the year”.

Oduwole, who also serves as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Industry, Trade and Investment added: “From January to August, about 22 billion dollars of investment has been announced in 41 projects across 22 states in Nigeria.

“Capital inflow into the country has almost doubled to 1.8 billion dollars in the second quarter compared to the figure in the first quarter. “The Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) identified the ease of doing business as a critical factor for driving industrialisation and investment,” she said.

Oduwole noted that as the government continued to implement the ERGP and improve the business environment, the investment climate of the economy would be impacted positively. According to her, various reforms and policies initiated by the government spurred the improvement of Nigeria’s ranking from 169 to 145 on the recently released World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Report.

She said that government would continue to pursue reforms aimed at stimulating the economic growth and boost the inflow of investment into the country.

Earlier, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, said that the Federal Government was passionate about rapid and sustainable development of the industrial sector.

He said that the government was committed to resuscitating the ailing industries, evolving various reforms and incentives that would deepen industrialisation of the economy.

The minister was represented by Mr Olajide Bamidele, the Assistant Director, Investment Promotion Department in the ministry.

Also in her remark, Mrs Eme Essien, the Country Manager, International Finance Corporation (IFC), urged Nigeria not to rest on its oars based on its improved ranking on the Ease of Doing Business Report.

Essien urged the government to encourage collaboration and set targets that would assist it to achieve sustainable development. President of LCCI, Mrs Nike Akande, also used the opportunity to commend  the improvement in Nigeria’s ranking by the World Bank.

SON Seals Warehouse in Lagos, Raids Substandard Products

Director-General, (SON), Osita Aboloma

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has sealed a warehouse and shops stocked with unfortified pasta, flour and sugar in different areas in Lagos State. It also raided major markets in the state as part of its ongoing efforts to stem the tide of substandard products in the country.

The Director-General, Osita Aboloma, said the warehouse and shops contained products that were unwholesome and therefore risky for human consumption. He said the products were smuggled in with no import documentation and registration numbers, adding that they could lead to dangerous health hazards to unsuspecting consumers who buy them.

Aboloma said the raid followed intelligence reports from sister security agencies and the cooperation of patriotic Nigerians, adding that the enforcement exercise would continue as a way of ensuring that only goods that meet the minimum requirements of the Nigeria Industrial Standards (NIS) or other approved standards are sold in the country.
“The seized products do not meet our standard specifications, a critical part of which is the regulation on fortification with Vitamin A. There were no documentations to show how they got into the country and evidence of being registered under our electronic product registration scheme. They are not supposed to be on our shelves,” Aboloma said.

He said the sale of unfortified pasta, flour and sugar in the country is particularly worrisome considering that there is a government policy on their fortification with Vitamin A as a way of preserving the sight of Nigerians. “Flour, pasta, vegetable oil and sugar are foods that Nigerians consume regularly and if they are not fortified with the necessary vitamins as provided in the relevant standards, the Nigerian consumers would be prone to such illnesses as blindness and other sight problems,” he said.

Aboloma, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Market Surveillance, Suleiman Issa, added that the campaign to eradicate substandard imported sugar, flour and flour products in the country would continue, assuring Nigerians that wherever these products are found, they would be removed.

“These products have not been registered with SON for traceability and quality verification. I will advise Nigerians to look out for the registration numbers of SON and NAFDAC on imported food products before purchase. Any uncertified, unregistered and smuggled product is very risky and most likely unwholesome for consumption. Any pack of these imported non-conforming flour-based products found in our markets would be removed and the owners held accountable until they take us to the source”, he said.

The State Coordinator, Lagos Office III, SON, Mrs. Ngozi Ekwueme, warned that the consumption of the products that lack Vitamin A fortification puts the average Nigerian who patronises them the most at a risk of blindness.
The Manager, Globus Supermarket, whose warehouse was sealed, said he lacked knowledge of the implications of consuming these products.

He urged the Federal Government to do more enlightenment programmes to educate the vendors and consumers.

CONTE: CHELSEA WILL IGNORE MOURINHO, MATIC WILL IGNORE ME

[
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Blues boss thinks that players on both sides will be able to focus despite seeing their former managers on the touchline in the Premier League. Antonio Conte thinks that facing a former manager will not be a distraction for Chelsea’s players or Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic ahead of a fiercly competitive showdown between the clubs on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho is now the manager of the Manchester outfit but led Chelsea to their first league title in 50 years as well as three of their six league titles across two spells with the London club. He added four cups and provocatively said last season that “Judas is still number one” as he was booed by his old fans after he lost in FA Cup quarter-final.

But Conte doesn’t expect his players to be worried about Mourinho in the away dugout, much as he doesn’t expect Matic, who was sold by Chelsea to Man United for £40 million this summer, to be thinking about his time with the Blues.

“I think in this time, you see only opponents. An opponent. I think this is the right way,” Conte said at a news conference at Cobham Training Centre. “It will be the same for Matic in the other side. I think he doesn’t care.

“The most important is to play for your page, to play for your club, to play for your fans. This is the most important thing now. I don’t want to answer this question [about Mourinho] otherwise you are ready to prepare your [Conte wants to be] number one [story about me].

“No, every coach has to put himself in his club and to try to become a really important coach for his club. I think every coach has the time, no, to spend at a club and the most important thing is to try and put all of yourself into the job in this time.

“That the club can be happy, the fans can be happy, and the players can be happy with your work. This must be our task. Then, if you are number four, number five, number six, this is not important. The most important thing is to have respect from your club, your fans and your players.”

Chelsea can go just one point behind Man United with a win on Sunday but a defeat might make it very difficult for the club to retain their title, with Manchester City already holding a nine-point lead over Conte’s side at the top of the table.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United played in the Champions League on Tuesday and had mixed fortunes. Man United closed on qualification to the knockout round with a 2-0 win over Benfica but Chelsea were well beaten as they lost 3-0 at the Stadio Olympico to Roma, with Conte admitting he made mistakes during the midweek match.

“We always have meetings,” he said. “After a win, after a defeat. Then we try to watch positive situations, negative situations, and then to try together to try and solve the situation. I think it happened the same yesterday during the meeting.”Sometimes it’s important to watch again the game. Sometimes it’s important to speak. But this is my task. To try to understand why we lost. And then to find the right solution to try and improve, to avoid other situations like this.

“I think I like to speak with the press and tell you when I make a mistake. If you remember after the first game against Roma, it was my fault. That wasn’t the first time, either. A lot of times I’ve put my face in front. But I’m ready to do this if the players put always great commitment. This is the case.

“For sure, I’m a coach who doesn’t like to find excuses or alibis. Sometimes I prefer to put all the mistakes in my face. Also even if the mistake is not mine, I prefer to put my face in front.”

“I think after a defeat it’s normal that we are not happy. We are not happy but it must be in this way. Otherwise it means we have a bad mentality. If we are happy after a defeat, it means we are not so clear to understand and to suffer. It’s right to suffer.

“After a defeat like that, you have to suffer. If you have a good mentality. You understand?

“If you have a good attitude. Because the defeat is not a good thing. But it can happen, this. The most important thing then is to find quickly the best way to try to find a solution, to find the right strength to be prepared for another game.

“Manchester United is a really important game, a big game, a tough game. I think it’s okay in this moment. The way I suffer after a defeat is not for everyone, because I suffer. I suffer. Who knows me very well, yeah, they know I don’t like to lose. That I need a bit of time to digest this loss.

Antonio Conte Cesar Azpilicueta Chelsea Watford

“Yes. But, then, those who know me know that, after this, I start stronger with more hunger, more desire because I don’t like to lose. I don’t like the defeats. I try, also, to transfer my suffering to my players. Sometimes I am able to do this. To have a good answer. Sometimes it’s a bit… You have to work with me to understand.”

Conte will face Mourinho for the fourth time since joining Chelsea on Sunday. His relationship with his opposite number has faced scrutiny ahead of each match but Conte insists that he doesn’t really have any close friendships with his fellow Premier League managers. Former Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri was Conte’s closest friend before he was sacked earlier this year.

“Before, I had a really good relationship with Claudio Ranieri, and also now after the awards for the best coach and the best player at Fifa, we went for a dinner with our wives,” Conte said.

“But I think it’s very difficult to speak about friendship with other coaches because then they become an opponent. You can have respect, respect for the job and the work, but to speak about friendship is very difficult.”

Ayade Decries Level Of Decay In Nigerian Universities

Gov. Ayade

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade has decried the fallen standards and level of decay in tertiary institutions across the countryAyade proffering solution to this fallen standard said Nigerian Government should restructure it’s educational system by focusing more on human capacity in order to graduate students who can compete with their counterparts in developed countries.

Governor Ayade, addressing the 12th Governing Council, University of Calabar, said it is saddening to discover that, most university students and graduates especially science related courses have no practical experience in order to make meaningful contributions in their line of study to the development of the country.

“Today, we have a very sad situation where products of our universities cannot hold their hands up. It is very saddening when we look at the amount of young people who are seeking to be admitted into Nigerian universities and the entire number of universities in Nigeria, 153 with almost 10 million people seeking admission at a time.

“We cannot continue to depend on foreigners to give us solutions. The black man is in a very hot climate, it takes a foreign company to provide air conditioner for us. So where are the professors and researchers in Nigeria? The council therefore has the responsibility to restructure the academic curriculum of Nigeria to reflect our core.”

The council was led by the Pro-chancellor and chairman of the council, Senator Nkechi Justina Nwogu who were on a visit to Ayade in his office in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital.

He thereby called on the 12th governing council to restructure academic curriculum and encourage expertise in schools as done in the western world.

Smugglers Reportedly Attack Customs Boss In Ogun

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Area Comptroller of Nigeria Customs Services in Ogun State, Sani Madugu, narrowly escaped death when he was reportedly attacked by smugglers.

He was said to be returning to Idiroko area of the state from Abeokuta at about 8pm on Tuesday alongside eight personnel of the customs when the suspects attacked his convoy. Madugu, who narrated his ordeal to journalists on Thursday at the Idiroko Customs Headquarters, said the hoodlums took advantage of the traffic jam at Ijako axis to attack his convoy.

“We were caught in the web of a traffic jam at Ijako axis of Abeokuta-Ifo Road when the hoodlums came and attacked my convoy. They destroyed and vandalised our vehicles”, he said. The customs boss the convoy dispersed the hoodlums with a reinforcement, adding that his men exhibited maturity to avoid any bloodshed.

‘We refused to be provoked, we did not fire guns to avoid calamity, particularly because of innocent motorists and passersby. We have to call for reinforcement before we could leave the scene,” he said. Madugu, however, noted that the command would not relent in its resolve to clamp down on smugglers, describing the attack as a prove of efficiency on the part of customs.

“The attack would not discourage us, we shall not be intimidated. Attacking us shows that we are working and we are mounting pressure on them. We are always one step ahead of smugglers,” he added. The comptroller said the case had been reported to the police while investigation had commenced in order to apprehend the suspects.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the command seized 1,000 bags of rice and 200 kegs of vegetable oil, as well as confiscated some exotic cars believed to be brought into the country illegally in less than a week.

IGP Agrees To Appear Before Senate Committee Over Misau’s Allegations

IGP Ibrahim Idris

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, says he is ready to honour the invitation of the ad hoc committee set up by the Senate to probe the allegations levelled against him by the lawmaker representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Senator Isa Misau.

The police boss made his position known while addressing newsmen in Abuja, adding that he would appear before the panel as a mark of respect for the Senate.

The committee had, on Thursday, reported the police boss to the Senate over his non-appearance.While Idris failed to appear before the committee on Wednesday, he wrote through his lawyer, Mr Alex Iziyon, informing the panel that his appearance would be sub judice as there were pending cases in court on the matter.

Following a meeting with the President, Muhammadu Buhari, he said he was consulting with his legal team on his appearance.“These are legal issues. We are discussing with our legal team. Obviously, if there is a need, we are going to appear for the sake of having respect for the Senate. I will appear before them,” he stated.

Furthermore, the IGP explained that his mission to the Presidential Villa was to brief the President on some security challenges confronting the country and how he was fixing them.

He also noted that part of the discussion bordered on the upcoming election in Anambra State and the increased rate of kidnapping in parts of the country.

President Buhari can win 75% of Igbo Vote in 2019-Orji Uzor-Kalu

Orji Uzor-Kalu

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ormer Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu, has said President Muhammadu Buhari can secure 75 per cent of the votes from the South-east states in 2019 election if he is able to address the infrastructure decay ravaging the zone.

Kalu, who spoke in an interview on Arise News Channel, the broadcast arm of THISDAY Newspapers, yesterday, said if Buhari decides to run for a second term in 2019, he would need to strike a deal with the Igbo on how to fix federal roads and boost electricity supply in the region in order to win their support.

“If the president is going to run again, we will force him to declare our area a special area and we are going to give him 75 per cent of the votes. He will declare and give us an emergency consideration. “Some places like Aba and Onitsha can provide anything you need and we can manufacture everything there if we can have adequate electricity,” he said.

When asked what can be done to stem the tide of agitations and separatist positions in the South-east such as the one being led by the now proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Kalu said as far he was concerned, the people were only demanding for the right atmosphere that will enable their businesses to thrive.

Kalu said with a good road network and adequate power supply in major cities like Aba and Onitsha, the Igbo have the capacity to achieve the country’s target in industrialisation. “Give us good light in Aba, give us good roads in Aba, give us good roadside light in Onitsha. We are not asking for you to do any other thing, we are capable of manufacturing things. Everything done in China can be manufactured in Aba and Onitsha.

“We are capable, Nnewi is already doing it and they will go hi-tech with technology if given the necessary encouragement. We have the people but we don’t have the management. We don’t have the asset. “The people that did the privatisation of the electricity sector, did it wrongly. The electricity companies were handed over to friends and that was not the right thing to do,” he said.

The outspoken businessman cum politician also delved into the alleged plot for a third term by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as real. Kalu said contrary to denials by some of the governors during the period, all of them were actually approached to give their support for an extension of the tenure of the former president beyond the limit provided for in the constitution.

He, however, said while most of these governors succumbed to pressures, he refused to be bought over.
According to Kalu, part of the reasons for his being dragged before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was his objection to the third term agenda.

Kalu also bemoaned Obasanjo’s attitude to criticism and opposition, describing him as just too petty.
“If he can just stop being a little bit petty, he is a man that is very petty and I don’t have any regret in saying so. You see, if younger people did something to you, you should be able to forgive them because life is very long.

“If younger people have said something against you, you should be able to also forgive them because that is the right thing to do. If Obasanjo had imbibed this kind of virtue, we would have gone far with our democratic process but he left serious things and started chasing shadows. “Instead of calling for unity, he put a lot of division because he wanted a third term. In looking for third term, he was able to divide the governors, although most of them are not speaking the truth today.”

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Comptroller, Customs Area Controller of Port Harcourt Area II Command,Onne, Bashir  Abubakar revealed that Plans have reached advanced stage towards  making the eastern ports huge revenue  pining points among the  seaports in the Federation. He stated this when he received in audience members of the  maritime and Energy media  practitioners of Nigeria  (MEMPON) recently in Onne. He said the plans were in consonance  with the comptroller-General of custom, Col Hameed, Ali’s plans to adopt  international best practices in doing  business at the country’s sea points.

Lagos State Police Command Records Major Breakthrough in Crime Fighting

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]agos State Police [dropcap][/dropcap]Command recently made a breakthrough with the arrest of the driver of a hotel operator in Victoria Island, William Olowoloju, for allegedly kidnapping his boss’ younger brother and the victim’s girlfriend. The suspects, William Olowoloju, Ayo Akinola, Segun Teluwo and one Akindamola – reportedly kidnapped the victims, Dumebi Azuka and Rebecca Omokaro, on Elegba Festival Drive, Oniru Private Estate, Victoria Island, at about 11.30pm on Saturday, October 21.

The lovers were driving out of the estate in a Ford Jeep when the abductors reportedly waylaid them at gunpoint and tied them up. They were said to have driven the victims to their hideout in Agodo Alara village, Ogijo, Ogun State, and demanded N20m ransom from the hotelier, Edwin Azuka.

Grassroots Publishers online learned that after the case was reported to the police, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad trailed the suspects to the den.The very brilliant and intelligent Acting Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, who paraded the suspects on Tuesday, told journalists including Grassroots Publishers online that the victims were rescued unhurt and

“Apart from the Jeep with number plate, LND 995 ES, one locally-made gun, a battle knife and four Automated Teller Machine cards, among others, were recovered from them.“The suspects will soon be charged to court on completion of the investigation.”

Also paraded were 50 suspected cult members, armed robbers, and drug peddlers arrested in the Ikorodu, Oshodi and Lagos Island areas of the state.“The command once again appeals to the people of Lagos to be vigilant to make the state safe and secure. Whenever you see something, say something,” Imohimi added.

Speaking with our correspondent, Olowoloju, who hails from Ekiti State, said he had approached his boss to give him  N100,000 loan sometime in September, but the boss turned down his request. The 37-year-old driver, who said he wanted to use the money for his in-law’s burial, explained that he felt disappointed and met with a friend, Akindamola, who advised him to kidnap Dumebi.

He said, “Akindamola said I would get the money if I kidnap my boss’ younger brother, Dumebi. I agreed with him, but I did not know how to go about it. He said he knew somebody who could make it work. He discussed with Segun and Ayo and they said there was no problem.

“We did not hurt him and his girlfriend. I was not around when they (the gang members) demanded N20m. I went to buy drinks for the victims.”Olowoloju added that Akindamola was released by the police on Monday.

The command, however, denied that Akindamola was released, saying he was a “soft target” the police trailed to arrest the gang members, adding that he was still at large. Akinola, 22, an indigene of Akure, Ondo State, said the gang members spent a night with Williams on the estate to perfect their plan.

He said, “Williams invited us. He promised to give us money. We stopped the man’s car and pointed a gun at him. We drove him and the woman to Ogijo. We did not plan to kidnap the woman.“We demanded N20m but he said he did not have money. He said he just invested his money in a business. In the night of the following day, we looked for a motorcycle and took them to a place where they could find their way back home.” Teluwo, who owned the gun used for the operation, said, “I found the gun in an Ogun shrine on a construction site in Ikorodu. This is the first time I would participate in the kidnapping.”
