BVN Fraudsters takes over Delta, Defraud 4,000 Bank Customers

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he heart beat of the nation ( Delta State) is now a safe heaven for Bank Verification Number ( BVN) fraudsters. About four thousand unsuspecting Bank customers have reportedly lost a whopping sum of N6.5 million to fraudsters currently on the prowl across the state. It was gathered that since BVN was made compulsory for all Banking transactions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), there have been hue and cry of increasing loss of funds to fraudsters by Bank customers.
Investigation revealed that with the implementation of the BVN, otherwise known as Bank Verification Number, policy in the country, fraudsters have intensified their activities of obtaining money illegally from the unsuspecting Nigerians, many of whom do their businesses mainly in Banks.
According to our investigation, for over three years now, the conmen have defrauded several people in Asaba, and its environs including Ughelli and Warri metropolis of their hard earned money.
This has also worsened the status of some persons to wallow in poverty, while others lost their savings in the process.
Sources said the fraudsters more often cash in on vulnerability of desperate customers who get panicked at the slighted development to enrich themselves at the detriment of their victims.
Their modus operandi is to send text messages to members of the public requesting them to update their BVN which they claim was purportedly deactivated in the process of registration for the BVN.
For instance, the message thus reads: “Dear customer due to our BVN system upgrade, your ATM card has been deactivated, to reactivate, kindly call CBN customer care on 08161751*** now”.
Thousands of these messages are sent out on a daily basis, and some unsuspecting Nigerians are responding despite warnings from Banks.
Banks have, warned that customers should not honour such requests, and to call or email the bank to confirm veracity of such claims, but some people are hitherto patronizing these fraudsters.
But the Delta State Police Commissioner, Muhammad Mustafa, who confirmed that fraudsters were on the prowl in the state, disclosed that the police have arrested six persons in connection with alleged fraudulent banking transaction in Asaba, and Ibusa communities, adding that the suspects, upon interrogation, confessed to the crime as they will be charged to court on completion of investigation.
Recently, a woman, Mrs. Evelyn Okolie, in her 50s, lost N260,000 through this process of unsuspecting text message. She was said to have received the message, and immediately responded by calling the number, and before long, the fraudsters swooped on her, and collected money from her account without her knowledge.
Unfortunately for her there was nothing the bank officials could do to help her at that point in time because the people had perfected the acts of cloning ATM cards, and using same to withdraw money from other people’s account.
Speaking further, the State Police Boss however assured members of the public of the police assistance to fish out the fraudsters, and bring them to book.

Why I exposed senators’ jumbo pay — Sehu Sani

       Senator Shehu Sani

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]adical Senator Shehu Sani, has given reason why he revealed that the country’s senators receive a hefty 13.5m naira every month to use on expenses of their own choice. Sani, of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), said there is little accountability about how the money is spent.

In an interview with BBC, he called for the payments to be scrapped, saying they are a key reason why people choose to enter politics.“I decided to bust it open. It was a moral issue,” Mr Sani told the BBC.“The National Assembly is one of the most non-transparent organs of government. It pricked my conscience and I decided to burst the bubble and open the National Assembly to public scrutiny.”

“If the expenses payment system was ended then parliament would only be attractive to people who contribute ideas,” he said. The money is paid on top of a senator’s salary which is more than $2,000 a month. They also receive a yearly constituency budget of $5.5m.

Nigeria’s minimum wage, meanwhile, is just $50 a month. The Senate confirmed Mr Sani’s revelation but described it as “nothing new”. “Almost all holders of elective and appointive offices have running costs allocated to their offices that cannot be said to be part of their salaries,” a spokesman said.

Jose Mourinho slams Frank De Boer as ‘worst manager’ after Marcus Rashford comments

              Marcus Rashford

[dropcap]J[/dropcap]ose Mourinho has blasted Frank De Boer, calling him “the worst manager in the history of the Premier League” after the former Crystal Palace boss said it is “a pity” Marcus Rashford is managed by the Portuguese coach. Mourinho handed Rashford his first Premier League start of 2018 against Liverpool and the 20-year-old took his opportunity with both goals in the 2-1 win.

De Boer, though, suggested after the game that Rashford would be better off playing under a manager other than [dropcap]M[/dropcap]ourinho.The Dutchman lasted just 77 days after losing four consecutive league games without scoring a goal before being replaced by Roy Hodgson in September. “I read something, some quote from the worst manager in the history of the Premier League, Frank De Boer — seven matches, seven defeats, zero goals.

“What he was saying was [it is] not good for Marcus Rashford to have a coach like me because the most important thing for me is to win. If he was coached by Frank, he would learn how to lose because he lost every game.”

De Boer, who has also managed Ajax and Inter Milan, suggested on Saturday that Rashford should play more often.”It’s a pity that the manager is Mourinho because normally, he’s an English player. You want to give him time and he can then make mistakes,” De Boer told BT Sports on Saturday. “But Mourinho is not like that. He wants to get results.”If he has one or two not good games, he puts him out. He’s a player, he’s very young, he needs games, but he’s so talented. You want to see this player every week.”

Rashford is in line to start the second leg of the Champions League round-of-16 tie against Sevilla at Old Trafford on Tuesday night after that performance against Liverpool.

Anthony Martial has returned from a thigh injury to add competition and Jesse Lingard, who was on the bench against Liverpool, is also pushing to start.”I try to give the best to [Rashford],” Mourinho said. “I have to be honest and give the credit to the people of the academy that were responsible for his formation, to Mr. [Louis] Van Gaal, who was responsible for his first season. “But if you go to his numbers and how many matches he played with me last season and this, I would say probably he’s in the top five players with more matches in the two seasons.”

Rashford has made 93 appearances since Mourinho took over from Van Gaal in 2016.

PRESS RELEASE

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum & Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) has debunked alleged insinuations of tenure elongation of its National Executive Council as reported in some national dailies.

The Union states that there is no iota of truth in it, as the union is working assiduously to conduct its National Delegates Conference in March, 2018.

NUPENG stresses that at the last Central Working Committee (CWC), National Executive Council (NEC) meetings in December 3 & 4, respectively in 2017, there was nothing like a heated debate but a vote of confidence passed on the leadership.  It was at that meeting an extension of 90 days was ratified by the NEC to prepare for a smooth transition.

The Union reiterates that the utterances from the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of NUPENG is a family issue which is normal in labour parlance and in every facets of our society and was due to a breakdown in communication which is been addressed.

NUPENG assures that there is no crack, no division, no crisis of any kind in the Union as we remain strong, united and resolute.

The issue of the global oil glut, insecurity has adversely affected the Union in depletion of membership strength thus affected our finances and organizing a National Delegates Conference is therefore not a tea party.

However, the Union states that the various Committees, Logistics, Accreditation and Resolutions are working round the clock to give the Union members a befitting election.

Comptroller Mohammed Uba,
Controller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Ikeja

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]igeria Customs Service (NCS) yesterday arrested a Chinese, Mr. Li Chaomin, in connection with Pangolin scales with a duty paid value (DPV) of N1.73 billion. The banned items, which were packed in 329 sacks, were impounded at Opebi area of Ikeja in Lagos.

Briefing newsmen on the development at the FOU Ikeja, Comptroller Mohammed Uba said a Chinese national, Mr. Li Chaomin, who is suspected to be the importer was also arrested in connection with the goods when the Unit stormed the house following a tip-off.It would be recalled that the Unit had also impounded 55 sacks of the same Pangolin and 218 pieces of elephant tusks, which were all, handed over to the Nigeria Environment Standards and Regulatory Enforcement Agency (NESREA) recently.

Uba explained that the Customs Administration all over the world protects wild life by intercepting illegal trade on such animals. He said, “ As you are aware, Pangolins are the only known mammals that have large and protective keratin scales covering their skin. After a surge in poaching across Asia, the international illegal wildlife trade is now also a growing threat to African pangolin species. These scales were sourced from other African countries to be trafficked.

“The tragedy of the unsustainable demand for their body parts in the illegal wildlife trade, the better chance they have from being saved from extinction. It was based on that the World Pangolin Day was set side globally to talk about pangolins and to help spread awareness about one of the world’s most vulnerable but least-known species. This year’s Pangolin Day was held February 17 to that effect.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our action is in-line with the provisions of Sections 147 of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap 45, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 (power to search premises)”.
Uba said that the seized items will be handed over the NESREA as usual for further investigation.

The Customs Controller was full of commendation for customs officers for their “resilience to have put their lives on the line while performing their statutory responsibilities most especially in anti-smuggling operations, which is yielding positive result. We will continue to motivate them and provide needed operational logistics that will help them perform their job better so as to sustain the tempo.”

Okowa Inspects Multiple Storm Drainage Project

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]elta State Governor,  Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, on Friday inspected the multiple storm drainage projects and  charged contractors to speed up the pace of work. According to the Governor, “the contractors must fully mobilize to site, they must get to appreciable level before the rain commences in full.”

The Governor frowned at the pace of work at the drainage site by St. Mary Vianney Catholic Church designed to empty flood water from Marian Babangida Way, DBS road, and adjoining areas. “The pace of work here is very slow, if the rains come earlier than expected, the drainage will collapse, in some areas, the soil is softer than others, the contractors must mobilize fully to site and increase the pace of work,” the Governor said.
