Sen. Nwaoboshi graced Asagba of Asaba 1st Coronation Anniversary

By: Ike Philip Abiagom

ONE year into his reign as the 14th Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, OON, FNIALS, has said he was well on course with the transformation agenda he set for the kingdom upon ascending the throne.

The Asaba monarch stated this, yesterday, at the township stadium, Asaba, where he gave his first anniversary day speech to his subjects and guests from far and wide.

Prof Azinge, in an address to celebrate the anniversary, added that his oath was to lead the land of Asaba, not for his personal interest but for the greater good of his people, committing never to disappoint in that regard.

He said he ascended the throne fortified in the knowledge that he had a sacred duty to lead his people both as a traditional ruler and also as a servant determined to bring glory and wellbeing to his people.

Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi

According to the highly revered and forward-looking traditional ruler: “Exactly one year ago, I ascended the throne of my forebears as the prescribed authority of this ancient Kingdom of Asaba. Permit me to once again thank the people of Asaba for the trust reposed in me by making me the 14th Asagba of Asaba.

“Looking back at the litany of accomplishments of the last 365 days, I am satisfied that I have impacted positively on my people, changed the narrative where it is imperative, made reforms in our traditional spheres, mainstreamed gender in our traditional architecture, reviewed our land ownership and sale, pursued enthronement of security of life and property, ensured that Asaba is peaceful for both indigenes and non-indigenes.

“I have also encouraged total support for the government of the day, engendered peaceful cohabitation with our neighboring communities, expanded the scope of affairs of Asaba people in my kingdom, monitored educational and healthcare facilities, promoted investment and tourism, pushed for developmental trajectory that finds expression in infrastructural enhancement and community-driven projects.

“Our milestone signpost is the vigor with which we have pursued the building of the magnificent Asagba of Asaba Palace edifice. I must continue to commend Asaba people for their relentless contribution to this project. Aside the main Palace, work is currently ongoing at the Palace Museum, the contractor for the 1000 capacity pavilion is now on site and very soon, work will commence at the library of the Palace. I want to thank our sons for supporting these projects with their personal funds.

“On my journey to the throne I made some promises to my people. Today without sounding immodest. I can say without equivocation that I have exceeded all imagination and expectations, even as my contract with my people is just beginning. The welfare of our people is paramount in my mind. To this end, I have initiated empowerment scheme, introduced bursary to over 100 students of tertiary institutions awarded scholarship to our sons and daughter excelling in the Universities, but with indigent background, introduced skill acquisition and vocational training for over 100 Asaba sons and daughters.

“We have set up numerous Committees to deal with diverse issues of critical importance, the Committee on Urban Renewal is up and doing, so also the Committee on Project Monitoring. I am reliably informed that the Committee on Blue Economy, Communication, Transportation and Distillation of Interest of Asaba in the Delta State Budget have made commendable progress.

“Research has shown that youths constitute over 70 percent of our total population. We must engage this section of our community to avoid youth restiveness in our land. Consequently, we are determined to push for employment opportunities for our youths, monitor cultism and drug addiction to control crime and criminality.

“We have on our own acquired and refurbished a Drug Rehabilitation Centre which has been commissioned to help our youths wean off from destructive substances. I have also enlisted medics from the National Youth Service Corps to support both our Primary Healthcare Centres and our rehabilitation centre.

“My dear people of Asaba, without any iota of doubt I can say that the state of Asaba under my watch in the last one year is very strong. Going forward, I know it will be stronger. I do not take your support for granted in this regard.

“The interest of Asaba at all times must supercede the interest of the throne, so help me God”.

He announced that arrangements had been concluded to enhance the status of wives of Olinzeles and make them full fledged Olinzeles in their own right, consequent upon which the tittle of Odoziaku had ceased to exist in the chieftaincy lexicon of Asaba.

The Asagba thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his quick intervention in the failed portion of the Asaba end of the Asaba – Benin expressway, and pledged support for him and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

He also thanked his brother traditional rulers for their support and camaraderie since he assumed office, pointing out that he had drawn a lot of strength and inspiration from their leadership qualities, while appreciating all Asaba title holders, the various Committees, the entire Asaba people and all invited guests for making the event a huge success.

In his message on the occasion, the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, recalled that exactly one year ago, the capital city of Asaba came alive with the rich tapestry of Anioma culture, as the ancient town witnessed the enthronement of a Monarch with profound wisdom and pedigree.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, noted that the Asagba’s transition from an erudite scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria to the custodian of the proud heritage of Asaba had been nothing short of inspiring, adding that in just one year the highly influential traditional ruler had shown that leadership grounded in knowledge, justice and tradition could unite and uplift a people.

He said Asagba Prof Azinge’s reign had already deepened peace, fostered harmony, and given fresh momentum to the collective progress of Asaba kingdom and Delta State at large, stressing that through his administration’s M.O.R.E agenda, government had found in the Asagba a true partner with whom it would be ensured that Asaba remained a city of peace and security.

The Governor expressed confidence that the Asagba’s reign would be long, peaceful and monumentally successful, stating that he had already started to set his kingdom towards a brighter future that would embrace culture, Inclusivity and unity among the indigenes and non-indigenes.

Meanwhile, the Distinguished Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, has felicitated with the Asagba, on the 1st anniversary of his ascension to the ancient throne as the 14th Asagba of Asaba.

Nwaoboshi, in a statement , yesterday, said that the Asagba has “performed beyond imagination in the last one year on the throne.

“Your majesty, because you have done a lot, it is almost unbelievable that you are just one year on the throne. You have impacted so much on your people and the whole of Delta State and Nigeria as you have brought uncommon zest and creativity to the throne by ensuring unity among various kingdoms.

“You did not only preach peace but have also ensured unity at both state and national levels. You have aptly demonstrated that we can live together peacefully as a people.’’

Thanking the Asaba monarch for encouraging harmonious and peaceful coexistence among ethnic groups in Delta State by visiting the various kingdoms in the state, Nwaoboshi commended him for using his exalted position for the service to the people.

The well attended event, which featured the cutting of cake, goodwill messages and cultural dances, attracted eminent personalities, including the member representing the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the House of Reps, Rt. Hon Ngozi Okolie; Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon Dennis Guwor; Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Arthur Akpowowo; Leader, Hon Emeka Nwaobi, among other members of the House.

Asagba of Asaba one Year Anniversary: 12 University Students awarded Scholarship by Asaba Community

The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, OON, FNIALS, has attributed all he has achieved since ascending the throne to the cooperation and understanding of Asaba people.

He made the remark on Friday at Ogwa-Ukwu Ahaba during the presentation of 12 University scholarship awards to indigent but exceptionally brilliant students of the community, as part of activities lined up for his 1st coronation anniversary.

The Asagba placed on record the commitment and dedication of the various Committees he set up to drive the development of Asaba, noting specifically the roles of the Welfare and Endowment Fund Committee, the Coronation Anniversary Planning Committee, the Asaba Development Union Trust Fund Committee, amongst others.

His Royal Majesty said the scholarship programme was designed to bridge the gap created by the absence of a similar programme for sons and daughters of the community in the past, stressing that the beneficiaries should consider themselves lucky to have been selected.

Asagba Prof Azinge pointed out that at a time some communities awarded scholarships to their first set of University students, especially in the fields of medicine and law, Asaba did not consider it expedient to do so, explaining the corollary of children sent abroad for further studies by their families not owing the community any obligation.

He told the beneficiaries: “We are not trying to tie anybody down. But we want you to always remember that it is Asaba that sent you out; that you are studying through the instrumentality of the sweat of Asaba; that in the fullness of time you are expected to give back to this land.

“Under ADU we have helped some persons along that line, though we didn’t follow up on them. So, those of you listed as beneficiaries the ball is in your court. From the level you are in your academic programmes, if you can justify the offer, we are prepared to take you to the highest level.

“That’s why the criteria are that you must be brilliant, you must be indigent and you must be in a public institution. So, you will be getting a cheque of N500,000 each per session, but you must take your studies seriously because if you fall by the way side, we will fall by the road side.

“Mind you, this is a two-way thing. Some people when they are comfortable they lose focus. But there are some that succeed by their sweat. Please don’t allow this motivation, this inspirational device from Asaba to make you to derail. Always remember that you are on this journey by the generosity of the Asaba community, and we will closely monitor your behavioral conduct, your discipline as a student, and everything you do.

“If before now you were aiming to make Second Class Upper or Second Class Lower, you should now be able to make First Class in your respective disciplines because your educational burden has been taken over by the community and you can now compete with children from rich homes.

“Your success is in your hands. We are only trying to start what was not there before, using you as an experiment. We are not expecting you to pay us back, but you must understand that you need to give back to the society at the appropriate time. All the money we have been spending is from our sons and daughters who are giving back to the community, unsolicitedly.

“It is from giving back that we have the likes of Ogbueshi Tony Ndah, who is building the Palace Museum at a cost of N400 million, Emma Odiaka, who has agreed to build the Palace Library for N200,000 million, and Rt. Hon Ngozi Okolie, who has been persuaded to award a contract for the Palace Pavilion, estimated to cost N600,000 million.

“Our people are capable of giving back and you should not be an exception. Remember the day you were invited to this hall. Remember the day you were presented with cheques and humble yourselves and read. You no longer have to depend on your parents because Asaba now stands as your parents.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Welfare and Endowment Fund Committee, Chief Prof Josephine Anene-Okeakwa; said the scholarship programme was initially meant for 10 students, two each from the five Ebos, but that the Asagba added two more names to bring the number to 12.

Prof Okeakwa highlighted other interventions of the Committee on the Asagba’s directive to include the provision of 100 chair and desks for Asagba Mixed Secondary School, provision of 300 text books for three Primary Schools, empowerment of 100 poor and vulnerable Indigenes of Asaba, payment of bursary award to 100 Asaba students in tertiary institutions, the funding of the recently commissioned KAINEBISI statue, amongst others.

She said she was happy to work with the King, describing him as transparent, highly disciplined, generous, and passionate about the development of Asaba.
