Abia Monarchs Visit: Buhari Unfolds Goodies To South-East

President Muhammadu Buhari

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigeria President,Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja expressed optimism that new investment commitments coming into Nigeria’s textile sector, of which Aba is a major beneficiary, will be actualized within the shortest possible time.

President Buhari gave the assurance when he received traditional rulers from Abia State led by His Royal Majesty, Dr. Isaac Ikonne, Enyi 1 of Aba.

The President also assured the monarchs that the issue of unstable electricity and other basic infrastructure in Ariaria market, a major trading hub in West and Central Africa, would soon be a thing of the past.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to rapidly industrialize the country through projects that promote import substitution, the President said the investments in the textile industry would create thousands of jobs for youths in Aba.

‘‘Just last week, I was in China to attend the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation. During that visit, I personally met with executives of one of the largest cotton and garment companies in the world who will soon establish operations in Aba.

‘‘This is following a joint effort of attracting this investor by both the Federal and Abia State Government.

‘‘The proposed investment will create thousands of jobs for the vibrant and creative youths in Aba.

‘‘I am very excited about this project. I have directed the Hon. Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment to ensure this investment is actualised within the shortest possible time,’’ the President told the visiting royal majesty and his entourage.

On Ariaria market, the President recounted that during his visit to Aba in 2015 as a presidential candidate, he was warmly received and walked through parts of the market where he observed the lack of electricity and other basic infrastructure for its over 40,000 shops.

‘‘As a government, we issued a presidential mandate to the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and the Rural Electrification Agency to energise the market.

‘‘In June 2018, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission granted an electricity generation licence as well as a distribution licence for the market. This will enable the generation and distribution of 9.5 Megawatts of electricity within the market.

‘‘The project is moving smoothly and I have been assured the market will be fully electrified soon. We are working closely with the State Government, Local Government, Traditional Rulers, Market Associations and the community on this project to ensure this goal is actualised by the end of the year,’’ he said.

On security, the President reiterated that the APC-led government would continue to do its best to maintain the sovereign integrity of Nigeria while protecting the livelihoods of its hardworking and honest citizens.

He also underscored the need for elder statesmen, leaders, parents and patriots to continue to guide youths on the path of peace and prosperity while eschewing hateful and divisionary rhetoric.

‘‘We must not shy away from this responsibility. We only have one Nigeria. And we must ensure we hand over a better Nigeria to the next generation,’’ he said.

In his remarks, Eze Ikonne lauded the President for successes recorded so far since he assumed office in 2015, particularly in the fight against corruption, agricultural revolution, infrastructure development and security.

On infrastructure development in the South East, His Majesty said: ‘‘ Mr President, I thank you for the massive federal roads rehabilitation going on in the South- East; like the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt expressway, Port Harcourt-Elele-Owerri road, Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

‘‘These roads were death traps for 16 years before you came into office, but today they are wearing new solid looks, though not completed but relief is already there with the level of work done so far.’’

Breaking: Finance minister Kemi Adeosun resigns

[dropcap]K[/dropcap]emi Adeosun,Minister of Finance, today reportedly resigned her appointment from the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of President Muhammadu Buhari.Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has reportedly resigned her appointment. Reports says it is not clear when the Minister submitted her resignation letter.

Adeosun’s resignation is coming after an allegation that she forged her National Youth Service Corps certificate. Grassroots Publishers had reported that Adeosun, who graduated from London East Polytechnic at the age of 22 in 1989, failed to comply with NYSC Act, which made it compulsory for every Nigerian graduate at home or abroad to participate in one year of mandatory service to the nation.
However, When Grassroots Publishers contacted the Ministry for confirmation, a source who does not want his name in print promised to revert with details.

But, the Presidency in its first reaction to the Saga said it hopes the certificate forgery allegation against the Minister of Finance would soon be proven to be false, and added that investigations were ongoing.

World leaders bid farewell to former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]orld dignitaries laid to rest former UN secretary general Kofi Annan in his native Ghana on Thursday, with calls to keep alive the legacy of a “stubborn optimist” to create a better, more peaceful world.
His widow Nane Maria led hundreds of mourners, including world leaders past and present, traditional rulers and global royalty, and called her husband an “extraordinary” person who had a “joy of life”.

“My love, you are now back home where you started your long journey. But may your wisdom and compassion continue to guide us, wherever we are,” she told his funeral in the capital, Accra.
His son, Kojo, said his father had dedicated his life to the ideals of unity, equality, love, peace and respect.

“The greatest tribute we could ever pay is to follow his example,” he added to conclude a three-hour ceremony of tributes, prayer and song.

Annan led the UN from 1997 to 2006 and was the first from sub-Saharan Africa to do so. He died on Aug. 18 aged 80 at his home in Switzerland after a short illness.

Thousands of ordinary Ghanaians this week paid their final respects as his coffin lay in state during three days of national mourning.

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo called him “one of the truly iconic figures of modern times”.

Many ordinary Ghanaians described him as a father-figure and a source of national pride, while his brother, Kobina, told the congregation that he was not just a leader and statesman.
“We lost a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather and an uncle, a man of deep conviction who was as committed to instilling the values of fairness, integrity, kindness and service in each of us as he was to advocating for peace and human rights around the world,” he said.

“Stubborn optimist that he was, he would want us all to look forward with hope and keep striving to create a freer, fairer and more peaceful world.”

Current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres praised his close friend as an “exceptional global leader” who was dignified, courageous and a man of “integrity, dynamism and dedication”.

“Kofi Annan was the United Nations and the United Nations was him,” he added.

“As we face the headwinds of our troubled and turbulent times, let us always be inspired by the legacy of Kofi Annan,” he said, adding: “Our world needs it more than ever.”

Annan, who was originally from Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region in southern Ghana, devoted four decades of his working life to the UN, and was known for bringing quiet charisma to the role.

He was widely credited for raising the world body’s profile in global politics during his two terms in office, facing challenges including wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Annan was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, as the world was reeling from the September 11 terror attacks in the United States, jointly with the UN “for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world”.

Opera singer and UN goodwill ambassador Barbara Hendricks, who performed at his Nobel ceremony, on Thursday sang the civil rights anthem “Oh, Freedom”.

Annan, a proud African, whom Nelson Mandela called “my leader”, left the post as one of the most popular — and recognizable — UN chiefs in history, and was considered a “diplomatic rock star” in international circles.

President Akufo-Addo said Annan “brought considerable renown to our country by this position and by his conduct and comportment in the global arena”. The outpouring of tributes from the world over is an accurate measure of the man, a man who gave his life to making peace where there was conflict, to defending the voiceless who were powerless, to promoting virtue where there was evil,” he added.

Annan kept up his diplomatic work after leaving office, taking mediation roles in Kenya and Syria, and more recently heading an advisory commission in Myanmar on the crisis in Rakhine state.

He acted as a negotiator between the government and the opposition in Kenya after post-election violence at the end of 2007, leading to the formation of the Grand Coalition government.

As well as Guterres, the funeral was attended by representatives of the African Union, the West African bloc ECOWAS, and presidents from across Africa and beyond.

Royalty included Princess Beatrix, the former queen of the Netherlands, and her daughter-in-law Princess Mabel, who were close friends.

Why I Am Running for Governor of Delta State -Prof . Utomi

Prof. Pat Utomi

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]ver the past two years, I have consulted with leaders and the rank and file of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, the national leadership of our party, as well as other Deltans across the political divide; and even began a Delta Arise Series to bring some focus on the issues of the day and the way forward for Delta State.

The feedback from these efforts and the huge support I received has encouraged me to embark on this journey to rescue Delta State from state capture that has impoverished the majority of our people and made the State a huge joke.

If you have a conscience and you watch a people live a fate worse than death, then your spirit must verge on being broken. Being a witness to crushing poverty lived by people across a small pond from oil production platforms, and being a witness and also a recipient of complaints from various quarters that family members continue to die untimely due to accidents triggered by the hardly motorable state of Delta roads, leaves me with a feeling of despondence. However, I stand today to say that all hope is not lost.

The infrastructure challenges in Delta State dehumanises our people, such that there is a plague of insecurity as Warri, like all other towns in the State, falls into a pale of darkness after 7p.m., yet it comes with gas flares that brutally teases the citizens about the possibilities of how light can scatter darkness. In addition, our environment has become so deplorable as to seem like a dust bin.

As I travel across the State, my pain at the misery index has been heightened. It is easy to say philosophically that I am diminished by the death of any human being and the misery of our people. In Delta State, my conscience kills me some more with the death from avoidable causes, of every man, woman or child, due partly to poor healthcare in the State. Sadly, such diminishing of the dignity of man is commonplace in our State, and this may be what propelled various groups and individuals to urge me to join the race in order to restore hope to our people.

Why is Delta State the domain of poverty in spite of such incredible endowments, human and material resources? How does a state go from being the shining light of the Western Region, to one that poverty rules and desperation is etched unto the faces of citizens?

In the old Western Region, which led Nigeria in innovation and people-oriented policies, the more admired entrepreneurs and civil servants were from the Midwest, out of which today’s Delta State is derived. Our State has since then lost its way, and it has no excuse being the home of many poor people. Delta has lost its glory and its dignity, and it is now literally on its knees begging to be rescued from the rot of many years, which is the result of poor governance, leadership failure and the incompetence of successive PDP administrations that turned their backs on our people.

Delta State receives very huge allocations from the federation account, yet extreme poverty exists in the State. Little of these fiscal transfers from the federation account that enter the State circulate in the State. Studies show that the monies enter state coffers and bolt out. If the velocity of the money is such that it touches a few more people even briefly, prosperity will visit many presently poor and it will consolidate with the thriving few.

What is more, Delta State is already hugely indebted, thus mortgaging its future generations. And the State acts as though it is unaware of our level of indebtedness. Worse still, the State’s infrastructure is evidently in shambles.

The State has also become barren of corporate life. Most companies have moved away from Delta. Shell Petroleum, which used to be a live-wire, left Warri and most other places in the State where it used to operate. Pan Ocean moved to Benin and many manufacturers have since closed shop.

Furthermore, the education sector faces numerous challenges resulting, in the average, on poor educational outcomes, especially in WAEC examinations. We have also lost our top position in sports and youth development.

This continuing decay must stop. Nothing stops Delta from becoming a network of Industrial Parks linked by world-class physical and social infrastructure.

With our current population growth rates, not creating job opportunities for our youth could mean that we would reap a whirlwind of anarchy. God forbid. But prayer is not enough. We must work as we pray. We must all take action now to free our State from bondage.

We are being given a new opportunity by our democratic process to have a new management that can transform Delta and bring happy days back to all; rich and poor, male and female, urban and rural; young and old. We must seize this opportunity.

We all will be judged surely. We will be judged by our children. We will be judged by history. And ultimately, we will be judged by God.

Anybody who remembers judgment and is not moved to do something positive about our situation in Delta State should probably never have been born.

This is why I have submitted my Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to formally enter the race for the governorship of Delta State. This course of action became imperative because Delta State must be rescued.

I have since taken up that challenge. And I took this step because many people of goodwill urged that I have a duty to do the needful for what they think is a legacy that should be fuller and more fulfilling. These selfless patriots include professionals, businessmen, traditional leaders, chiefs, students, traders, market women, taxi drivers, workers, artisans and our traditional politicians from all the three senatorial districts of the State; and an attempt to list them will take forever. Among these are two illustrious sons of Delta State who are no longer with us: Sir Olisemeka Akamukali and Pastor P.Z. Aginighan, in whose memory I also dedicate this race.

I am motivated to join this race in order to rescue Delta State from the rot it has been experiencing; not for personal interests nor for the interest of a few but for the interest all Deltans. I will be governor for all.

Our party must create a level playing field for all who are seeking the governorship ticket of our great party. It must allow party members to make informed decisions during the primaries by organising debates for aspirants to illuminate the public on issues of the day, and the solutions they proffer to the huge problems facing our dear state. It is also my view that the press, the fourth realm, supports this process by asking critical questions. I am therefore calling for not less than five debates on television, in town halls in the three senatorial districts, campuses and markets, among the APC gubernatorial aspirants in the Delta State to articulate their visions and policies to turn Delta State around; and specifically to spell out their agenda in these areas:

(a) State Economy
(b) Infrastructure
(c) Education
(d) Healthcare
(e) Youth and Women Empowerment

I want to indicate that when elected, our administration will provide free quality education to citizens of the State. We will also ensure accessible quality health to our people. Pregnant women will have access to improved quality of ante- and post-natal healthcare services in order to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

I am committed to promoting and instituting good governance, fighting against corruption and I will run an inclusive government. Our youth are not the leaders of tomorrow, but of today, and they are our future. They will be appointed to play key roles in our administration. Creating job opportunities for our youth will be a priority of our administration. Our civil servants, local government employees, teachers and pensioners deserve that their wages and emoluments be paid in due time so that they can live fuller lives, and not one of misery.

We must end the era of self-serving leaders and bring about undiluted focus on purpose being the essence of public life, and not power, as it has been the case. Our people must be the reason for public service, and they must be at the heart of governance in Delta State. As has been evident in the journey of my life, my joining this race is about service to the people of Delta State. I choose to be the “People’s Servant”.

When elected, my growth and development plans will focus on:

• Ending poverty
• Infrastructure development, and
• Empowering our communities.

We shall work hard to unite and build our party towards better inclusiveness, mutual trust and a cohesiveness that endures to serve a greater purpose and that benefits all in common; not one being defined by excessive partisanship.

It is time to restore hope and dignity back to our people; and as we look to a better future with new and brighter possibilities, I commit to providing the required leadership that will inspire all Deltans to be the best they can be, and in a manner that will enable each and everyone to pursue their legitimate individual and group interests and achieve their set goals, with peace of mind and security assured. This is my new deal to all Deltans for a new Delta.

I am here only to assure you that hope is on the way, and the future that we wish for now beckons. I have the much-needed experience in government, business, social enterprise, NGOs and academia, and the evidence of having served as a leadership and development consultant to several governments within and outside Nigeria. I will be bringing all of these to serve Delta state as governor and will begin to deliver from Day One in office. What is left is for all of us, Deltans and residents alike, to work collectively towards that new future with zeal and determination, and to bring about a change of the present PDP administration in the State to one with sincerity of purpose, a commitment to the common good of our people and a government that will always put our people first. The time for that change starts now.

Delta must rise up again! Let us arise and push to redeem Delta State for ourselves, our children and for generations unborn.

May God bless Delta State, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!

Buhari, APC leaders mount pressure on Tinubu to endorse Ambode’s 2nd term

Gov. Akimwunmi Ambode and National Leader Senator Bola Tinubu

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]here is a very strong indication that Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode will be given the All Progressives Congress, APC, ticket to vie for a second term in 2019, as President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC national leaders are mounting pressure on the APC National leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to allow him to contest.

In recent days, lingering feud between Ambode and his godfather, Tinubu has seen the emergence of former Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Jide Sanwo-Olu picking up the governorship form in Lagos as he is said to be the anointed candidate to replace Ambode.

The crisis between the duo led Buhari to invite Tinubu to Abuja to chat a new way forward.

A top government source who craved anonymity told  Newsmen that the crisis between the duo has been resolved by the president.

According to the source, “I learnt it has been resolved. But I cannot confirm yet. I am expecting details of the meeting with the President. Hopefully, it looks as if it would be resolved with the high-level meeting with President Buhari and other APC national leaders.”

Another strong party source said the president “is meeting with the both parties. He is resolving the crisis already. All of them are still in the meeting. All the issues will soon be resolved.”

However, another strong party source said Buhari invited Asiwaju to Abuja and that he had already gone, saying that he ought to have gone Wednesday night. But he could not make the trip for some reasons. In actual sense, most party leaders do not want Ambode to come back again.

“The elders are saying they do not have access to the governor. They are saying they have been shut out of the government. It appears they have made up their minds they are not going to support Ambode’s re-election. So, it is going to be difficult to convince the elders to accept Ambode again because of what they have suffered under this administration in the last three years.

“It is above Tinubu. I know Tinubu will present cases against Ambode to the President. But we cannot rule out resolution with Buhari’s intervention.

“About 11 commissioners are planning to contest because they are not really benefiting from this government. Apart from the party elders, the youths, market women and all interest groups are no longer in support of the governor. People are even threatening to support another party if Tinubu endorses him at last.”

He said: “A LONG WALK TO FREEDOM… Governor AKINWUNMI AMBODE bounces back as godfather ASIWAJU BOLA TINUBU calms down tension in Lagos… Thanks to PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI and VICE PRESIDENT PROFESSOR YEMI OSINBAJO…”

Ndi Imo to fight against Familiocracy in Imo state -Araraume

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]side Political sentiments, Senator Araraume has sent the first shot, he has started the collective project of Ndi Imo to fight against Familiocracy in Imo state.

Like I have always said, I am a true fan of Governor Rochas Okorocha during his first term, but now I don’t think no man with his right and functional conscience will do that for now. But that does mean that my governor is bad, no its far from it.
My governor is a man with surprises, he loves when he really wants to love, a cheerful giver, that had good vision, but at a time his vision started driving him crazy, and most of those around him didn’t help positively in his vision and dreams for a better Imo.
For the past 3years, Imo state has witnessed and experienced a very bad government. I watched the democracy day media briefing of my governor, he nearly confused and convinced us on the things we knew the truth already. According to him he builds for the future and not for the present, and I witnessed it. His government is for the future and not for the present, no wonder his administration has currently has so much uncompleted projects, left to be completed in the future. If you watch most of his projects are uncompleted, yes they are for the future and don’t forget his government is for the future and a governor with the highest number of uncompleted buildings.

He said he built, 300, bed space hospitals in all the 27 local government areas. Yes I was there yesterday and I saw sick and healthy snakes and some dangerous animal receiving treatments while others were busy sharing their salaries. He said he built 305 primary schools in all the INEC wards. Yes as usual, they are for the future. I took my time last week and visited 10 out of the 27 local government areas; I visited most of the wards, all I saw death trap, collapsing buildings and uncompleted buildings, while those completed were left to be used in the future. I visited Owerri and I saw how beautiful the capital city of Owerri is, if you are not careful in Owerri when it is raining, you will end up swimming without a swimming skit, rather with your suit.

Is it the demolition of markets and the incompletion of new market sites? He said the level of hardship in IMO state has reduced; well as usual that is a speech for the future. Yes the level of hardship in Imo state is second to none. Reasons are the demolition of markets, banning of keke riders, nonpayment of pensions, nonpayment of complete salaries to civil servants. May be he has plans for the future. Currently most of those affected by the demolition of those markets, can no longer afford 3squre meal and other basic human needs. And the highest of its all is him dreaming to install his in-law as the new governor of Imo State, from the same zone, and automatically making her first daughter the first lady after his wife.

Well I have researched about Hon Uche Nwosu, I found out that he is a very kind man, a very good man, that helps those around him and support the youths working for and with him, and that he has a good listening ear.
But his sins/crime is allowing Governor Rochas to champion his cause. Imo state citizens are not ready for another future government. And for the Governor thinking and believing that we all are for the future, that maybe he can have his way as the emperor of Imo state as the king of the kings. It sounds somehow that a man after ruling for 8years single handedly hands over power to his in-law, it sounds somehow to the ear, is unheard for, but let’s assume this happens after 4 or 8years and above after he meant have left office as the governor of Imo state, it will be understandable. All thanks to Senator Ifeanyi Araraume elected Senator for the Imo North (Okigwe) constituency of Imo State , Nigeria at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He took office on 29 May 1999. He was reelected in April 2003. After taking his seat in the Senate in June 1999 Araraume was appointed to committees on Communications, Police Affairs, Federal Character, Finance & Appropriation, Information and Niger Delta (vice chairman) And currently a full time APC member. And the best inter party politician in Nigeria. He has made things easier for Imo State citizens, to vote in a candidate of their choice irrespective of his/her political party.

He has tried to reduce the pressure and power if my family system. And at the same time told him how 2019 election will look like, how angry Imo citizens are and how ready they are to end my family government. As usual, I am currently not a partisan politician, am only a sociopolitical analyst, working towards bringing in “LIGHT” and good governance into Imo State, irrespective of the political party.
