Budget: PDP’s Desperation Can’t Intimidate Buhari – Uduaghan

Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]mmediate-past governor of Delta State and All Progressives Congress 2019 Delta South senatorial candidate, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has reacted to the protest that occurred on Wednesday during President Muhammadu Buhari 2019 budget presentation at the joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja.

In a post on his confirmed Facebook page on Wednesday, Uduaghan said that though the opposition party was becoming more desperate for power, President Buhari cannot be intimidated as the protest by the opposition only succeeded in making him (Buhari) stronger and more popular.

“PMB: Bold, strong, brave, cannot be intimidated. I am happy you faced the hostility threat and came out stronger,” Uduaghan said.

The former governor stressed further that there was a time a sitting president (apparently referring to former President Goodluck Jonathan) had consistently refused to face the National Assembly to avoid embarrassment.

He said Jonathan’s refusal to appear for budget presentations during his days was not only out of fear, but a disservice to the nation and its democratic experiment. “A sitting president in Nigeria refused to go and personally present a budget, because of intelligence that he would be booed. He chickened out.

Dr. Uduaghan further dismissed the attack on Buhari as normal, stressing that the legislating proceedings in Britain amd other parts of the world lent credence to the fact that what transpired at the National Assembly was not unusual. “Legislative houses all over the world are places where prominent heads of states are openly opposed. Some lose their temper and resort to use of foul language.

“Watch the British parliament every Wednesday at 12 noon when the British PM appears in parliament.

“There is nothing unusual about what happened today. It is not a sign of the president not being popular.

“It is about the fact that the opposition is adopting other means of trying to embarrass a sitting president.

“It is the sign of a more desperate opposition. And the president stood up to the challenge. Our democracy is deepening,” the Itsekiri-born medical doctor noted.

2019 UTME: JAMB Announces New Date To Begin Sale Of Forms

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced January 10th as the commencement date for the sale of forms for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Jamb said the registration window would be open for six weeks for prospective candidates.

The Board also said it will discontinue the use of cyber cafes for registration of candidates beginning from the next examinations in 2019.The development was announced on Tuesday by JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during his meeting with proprietors of Computer Based Test (CBT) centres at the University of Lagos.

“We are no longer going to allow the cyber cafes to do the registration exercise for prospective candidates because they are extorting candidates and overcharging them.“They also do services they do not have the capacity to do, coupled with the fact that there was no way of tracking them because they were not registered.

“Another major reason is the mix-up they create on the data of the candidates. Some will just ask the candidates to write their names and other details down for them.“On accumulating such data, they now get all of them mixed-up, thereby creating problems for these candidates.“We know there will be uproar because they make a lot of illegitimate money from these services, but we cannot leave the candidates at their mercy.

“Particularly when people will make noise that it is JAMB that was extorting them,’’ he said.

Oloyede said JAMB has so far accredited 718 centres where prospective candidates can walk in to do their registrations.

Igbo Group, MASSOB, Writes Off Senate Deputy President, Tags Him As Selfish

Senator Ike Ekweremadu

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n Igbo socio-cultural group, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has accused the deputy senate president, Senator Ike Ekweremadu of not using his lofty political position to enhance the political and economic situation in Igbo land. Deputy MASSOB leader, Mazi Ikechukwu Ekwe, in a statement today, Tuesday, accused Ekweremadu of allowing his personal ambition and political ego to undermine the collective interest of the people, alleging that the senator had suddenly started canvassing for Igbo presidency 2023 because he lost out in the race for the vice presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“We frown at the lukewarm and nonchalant attitude of the current highest Igbo political office holder, who has not utilized the opportunity and government access legally and constitutionally attached to his office as deputy senate president towards attracting fair and just betterment of the people. “How can MASSOB and other pro Biafra groups that have thousands of block votes, grass root support base and massive people- oriented command, support or vote for Igbo political office seekers into the National Assembly, state Assembly and as state governors, when people like Ike Ekweremadu and his Igbo colleagues in the National Assembly are mere political errand men to our oppressors?

“MASSOB wishes to remind our people that Ike Ekweremadu, as the chairman of senate committee of constitutional review and amendment, has not deemed it fit as chairman of the highest committee and as deputy senate president, to push or influence an additional state to South East or influence the insertion of political referendum into the Nigerian constitution or push for massive infrastructural development of Eastern Nigeria.

“MASSOB frowns that our brother, Ike Ekweremadu has forgotten to showcase his Igbo traditional attires and cultural heritage in the floor of National Assembly and cling to Hausa- Fulani traditional and European attires. “He only remembers that he is an Igbo man with Igbo traditional attires whenever he appears in court over his matter with ICPC. We condemn such blatant hypocrisy and sabotage against our Igbo traditional and cultural heritage.”

Supreme-Court affirms Uwaukoni as Iyasei of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom after 13yrs dispute,

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Supreme Court, yesterday, resolved the kingship dispute that has rocked the Ogwashi-Uku kingdom in Delta State for  13 years.

The apex court, in a unanimous judgement that was delivered by a five-man panel of justices, declared Chief Mike Nwaukoni as the validly selected and installed Iyasei (traditional Prime Minister) of Ogwashi-Uku kingdom. Justice Sidi Bage who gave the lead judgment, held that an appeal that was lodged by three members of two royal families in the kingdom, to challenge Nwaukoni’s selection, lacked merit. “The amended statement of claim was found to be defective. This appeal is hereby struck out.  Parties are to bear their respective costs,” Justice Bage held.

“The amended statement of claim was found to be defective. This appeal is hereby struck out.  Parties are to bear their respective costs,” Justice Bage held. Other members of the apex court panel who agreed that the appeal deserved to be struck out were Justices Dattijo Mohammed, Bayaang Akaas, Paul Galinje and Amina Augie. Specifically, the appellants—Mr.  Augustine Arueze,  Okonkwo Iyase and Chief Colins Afuwah—had on behalf of the Umu-Uti family of Agidiase Quarters of Ogwashi-Uku, approached the Supreme Court, begging it to set-aside a judgement the  Court of Appeal in Benin delivered on July 12, 2010, which upheld Nwaukoni’s installation as the 13th Iyasei of the kingdom.

They contended that the appellate court was wrong to have okayed the selection and installation of Nwaukoni who is not a member of two royal families from where all the past traditional Prime Ministers of the kingdom were selected.  While praying the Supreme Court to allow the appeal, the appellants insisted  that only Ugbekide of Chami Lineage and Umu Uti of Jogwa lineage of Agidiase, Ogwashi Uku of Aniocha South LGA Delta State, could produce an Iyasei.

They urged the apex court panel to overrule the Court of Appeal and reinstate the judgement of an Ogwashi-Uku High Court, which on March 20, 2008, faulted Nwaukoni’s selection by the council of elders known as the Obi, to head the kingdom. The high court had granted reliefs in a suit the appellants filed in 2005 to stop Nwaukoni from assuming office as the Iyasei. Meanwhile, Nwaukoni, through his team of lawyers led by Mr. Chioma Okwuanyi, queried the competence of the appeal, even as he adduced sufficient evidence to prove that he was validly nominated to take over the Iyasei traditional stool.
