Why I am Giving My Support for Okowa’s Re-election – Ned Nwoko

Prince Ned Nwoko

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Deputy Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council and Anioma born philanthropist, Prince Ned Nwoko has said that he is supporting Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to return as a Governor a second time, based on the fact that he is a good governor who has performed excellently well and again, that the Anioma extraction of the State should complete her second term governorship arrangement as anchored on equity and fairness.

He made these assertions while hosting Focus Groups, Non Indigene Communities and Support Groups in conjunction with the Directorate of Focus, Non Indigene and Support Groups of the PDP Campaign Organisation to launch “operation return Okowa as Governor in 2019”, at the Mount Ned Nwoko Resort, Idumuje-Ugboko in Aniocha North LGA of Delta State.

“First, I am on this mission for Okowa’s reelection because I recognise him as a good governor who has performed beyond expectations and over and above his predecessors.

Secondly, we must do this based on equity, justice and fairness; which is a reasonable thing to do after the Central and Southern parts of the State had done their own cycles of eight years each.

I am a good friend of Chief Great Ogboru as well as I am to Senator Ifeanyi Okowa. Before now, I was on the other side with Ogboru against Uduaghan and Okowa; but today, Ogboru and Uduaghan are on one side fighting Okowa and myself. That is politics, but I don’t like this kind of politics.

We must be able to be on the same page, not minding if politics is about PDP or APC. The emphasis must be on the people.

I don’t sing praises of people. However, I have seen in Okowa a man focused and committed to good governance.

So, I consider this gathering a very important foundation for the reelection of Okowa. I am out to support him. My mission is to change the way governance is viewed. It is in the interest of the people, in the sense that we must establish a social contract directly with the people.

That is why I have called the focus groups and all non indigene communities to see how everybody can be factored into governance. That is my idea of politics; so that government will begin to involve the people on the policies and programmes of government.

We truly need a template to put up a body of leaders that can drive this system of governance where there will be a Ministry to cater for every group not partisan in politics. We should be able to drive this new leadership agenda that will give a voice to all Deltans – voices not hitherto represented in politics. And I assure you I will fund it.

I know that if we all agree to support Governor Okowa’s reelection based on these concepts enunciated here; he (Okowa) will do all that we will suggest for him to do. Like I said, he is a good man and has performed excellently well. He deserves a second term”, Ned Nwoko affirmed.

Speaking also, the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor and Head of the Directorate of  Focus, Non Indigene and Support Groups, Chief Festus Ochonogor commended Prince Ned Nwoko for his unprecedented support towards the reelection bid of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, adding that by his monumental influence the focus groups had been united to key into the second term agenda of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

He declared that government is by this unity gathering, ready to integrate every one of the groups for a thorough social contract that will significantly focus on the masses.

While representatives were selected from the organised labour, religious body, civil society, community development unions, non indigene communities and others to speak, they all focused on one direction – the acceptance of the fact that Okowa had done well and the need to support him for reelection.

On a final note, a 7-point communique was drawn and read to the participants. In conclusion, all the focused groups, non indigene communities and support groups thereafter, endorsed Governor Okowa for a second term through a unanimous voice vote.

My Defence: CJN Onnoghen replies Code of Conduct Bureau

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]hief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen has responded to the accusations of false assets declaration by the Code of Conduct Bureau, clarifying that he forgot to update his asset declaration forms, according to some reports.“My asset declaration form numbers SCN 00014 and SCN 00005 were declared on the same day, 14/12/2016 because I forgot to make a declaration of my assets after the expiration of my 2005 declaration in 2009. Following my appointment as acting CJN in November, 2016, the need to declare my assets anew made me to realize the mistake.

“I then did the declaration to cover the period in default. I did not include my standard chartered bank account in SCN 000014 because I believed they were not opened. “I did not make a fresh declaration of asset after my substantive appointment as CJN because I was under the impression that my SCN 000015 was to cover that period of four years which includes my term as CJN,” Mr Onnoghen said in his statement dated January 11″, Onnoghen stated, in his response to the CCB query.

The online news platform, Premium Times published snippets of Onnoghen’s response.

Nevertheless, the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has scheduled Jan. 14 for his arraignment. Mr Ibraheem Al-Hassan, the tribunal’s Head, Press and Public Relations, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

He said the action was consequent upon an application filed by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to the Chairman of the tribunal. Al-Hassan said the application was signed by Mr Ibrahim Usman and Mrs Fatima Ali on behalf of the bureau.

He, therefore, said the tribunal would commence the trial of the CJN on six-count charge as the service of summons had been effected on the defendant.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI) filed the petition at the Code of Conduct (CCB) against Justice Onnoghen.

Mr Dennis Aghanya, Executive-Secretary of the organisation, who made the copy of the petition available to NAN on Saturday in Abuja, said the body had acted as a whistle blower.

Aghanya said the petition, which was filed on Jan. 7, was an offshoot of a painstaking investigation into the dealings of the CJN. He said the organisation was of the strong opinion that the allegations were weighty enough to compel an action against Justice Onnoghen. The petition reads in parts: “we hereby petition you on suspected violations of the law and the Constitution of Nigeria by the Honourable Mr. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“ Specifically, we petition you based on the alarming facts detailed below, all of which indicate that the leader of our country’s judicial branch is embroiled in suspected official corruption, financial crimes and breaches of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

“The particulars of our findings indicate that: 1. His Lordship Justice Walter Onnoghen is the owner of sundry accounts primarily funded through cash deposits made by himself, up to as recently as 10th August 2016.

“These appear to have been run in a manner inconsistent with financial transparency and the code of conduct for public officials.’’

The body had alleged that Justice Onnoghen made five different cash deposits of 10,000 dollars each on March 8, 2011 into Standard Chartered Bank Account 1062650.

The group also alleged that the CJN on June 7, 2011, made two separate cash deposits of 5000 dollars each.

It was also alleged that the June 7, 2011 transactions were followed by another four cash deposits of 10,000 dollars each.

Similarly, ARDI further alleged that Justice Onnoghen had on June 27, 2011, made another set of five separate cash deposits of 10,000 dollars each and made four more cash deposits of 10,000 dollars on June 28, 2011.

The body alleged that the CJN had also failed to declare his assets immediately after taking office, adding that the inaction was contrary to Section 15 (1) of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

ARDI also alleged that Onnoghen did not comply with the constitutional requirement for public servants to declare their assets every four years during their career. The group alleged that the Code of Conduct Bureau Forms (Form CCB 1) belonging to Justice Onnoghen for 2014 and 2016 were dated and filed on the same day.

The group alleged that the acknowledgement slip for Declarant SCN: 000014 was issued on Dec.14, 2016 while that for Declarant SCN: 000015 was also issued on Dec.14, 2016.

The petitioner alleged that the two CCB acknowledgment slips were issued to the Justice Onnoghen when he had been sworn-in as the CJN.

“The affidavit for SCN: 000014 was sworn to on 14th December 2016; 2 of 6 b. The affidavit for SCN: 000015 was sworn to on 14th December 2016.

“Both forms were received on 14th December 2016 by one Awwal Usman Yakasai.

“The discrepancy between Justice Walter Onnoghen’s two CCB forms that were filed on the same day is significant.

“In filling the section on Details of Assets, particularly cash in Nigerian Banks, His Lordship as Declarant SCN: 000014 mentioned only two bank accounts,’’ the petitioner alleged.

According to the petitioner, the CJN runs Union Bank account number 0021464934 in Abuja, with balance of N9, 536,407 on Nov. 14, 2014.

The body alleged that the second account the CJN agreed to run was Union Bank number 0012783291 in Calabar, with balance of N11, 456,311 as at Nov. 14, 2014.

The petitioner said the sources of the funds in the accounts were stated as salaries, estacodes and allowances.

The petitioner, however, alleged that Justice Onnoghen as Declarant SCN: 000015, had listed seven bank accounts that were in use.

The group said the CJN was linked to Standard Chartered account 00001062667, with balance of N3, 221,807.05 as at Nov. 14, 2016.

Another account they alleged was operated by the CJN included Standard Chartered account 00001062650, with balance of $164,804.82, as at Nov.14 2016.

The other account linked to him is Standard Chartered with account number 5001062686, with balance of 55,154.56 Euros as at Nov. 14, 2016 among others

Mr Onnoghen was first appointed acting CJN on November 10, 2016 following the retirement of the former CJN, Mahmud Mohammed.

He was sworn in to office as Nigeria’s 17th CJN on March 8, 2017.

CJN Onnoghen’s planned trial cannot stand; Buhari not aware of it- FG

Justice Walter Onnoghen
Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN)

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Presidency has vowed that actions by the anti-corruption agencies to try the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen cannot stand, saying that President Muhammadu Buhari is not aware of it.
A senior government official, who reacted to the issue, on condition of anonymity, stressed that the President has no hand in the so called impending trial of the CJN, adding: ”it is false and reprehensible. President Buhari respects the judiciary and will not support anything that takes away from this.”
Sources hinted that President Buhari was livid with anger when he learnt of the action, saying that the President even put a call through to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) who denied knowledge of it also.
They said that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo also made frantic calls to everyone who could know and they claimed not to be aware.
A source in the Presidency confirmed that the plot may have been hatched by 5th columnists in the corridors of power who designed it to embarrass the Presidency and create misunderstanding between the judiciary and the Federal Government.
The source explained that the only impact such an action would generate at this time is distasteful. “Let me tell you point blank Mr. President is not aware and was shocked at the development.”
Another official said that whatever may be the merits of the case being put against the CJN, it is not advisable at this time.
“So it is not about the rightness of the planned action.”
Asked whether the plot will go forward, the source said: “what is certain right now is that this came as a shock to the Presidency and does not enjoy approval of any kind. You can figure out the rest.”
According to several reports in the media today, the Federal Government will on Monday January 14, arraigned the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led- Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges of failure to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

2019: MASSOB COUNTERS IPOB, SAYS ELECTIONS WILL HOLD IN SOUTH-EAST

IPOB MEMBERS

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has disagreed with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) over whether elections should hold this year in the South-East and other parts of the defunct Republic of Biafra.

The outlawed IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu, has been insisting that the elections will not hold in the concerned areas, particularly the South-East states. But after a ‘National Executive Council meeting’ in Enugu on Friday, MASSOB declared that the scheduled elections would take place in ‘Biafraland’.

MASSOB, which stressed that it would not back down from the agitation for a sovereign Biafran state, noted that pro-Biafra activists could not ‘forcibly’ impose their interests on the people of Nigeria.

According to the group, southeasterners who believe in Nigeria are free to participate in the elections.

A statement signed by the National Director of Information, MASSOB, Comrade Samuel Edeson, disclosed that the executive council meeting, which held at Awgu, Enugu State, was chaired by the group’s leader, Uchenna Madu.

Parts of the statement read, “The leadership of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, after a National Executive Council meeting presided by our leader, Uchenna Madu, at our headquarters in Awgu, Enugu State, which was attended by all the local government area, state and zonal coordinators, as well as national directors, unanimously agreed and declared that this year’s general elections of the Nigerian state would not be stopped or boycotted in Biafraland.

“MASSOB, having realised that Biafrans cannot forcibly impose our desires and interests on the people of Nigeria, and also in line with the principle of non-violence, unanimously agreed and resolved that the Nigerian state will conduct its political exercises, including general elections.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission will be allowed to conduct elections in Biafra for our people that still believe in the Nigerian state.

“Nigerian elections will come and go irrespective of whoever wins at both national and state levels but we must continue with the struggle for the actualisation of Biafra despite internal and external distractions.”

Apparently referring to IPOB, the statement noted that Biafran agitators who wish to boycott the polls were free to stay at home on election days, without disturbing other members of the public who might wish to partake in the exercise.

“MASSOB advises that other pro-Biafra groups that planned to boycott the elections are entitled to stay at home during elections days. “Our people that still believe in the Nigerian project are free to participate in the electoral processes of Nigeria, including this year’s elections,” the statement said.

MASSOB added that it was committed to the actualisation of the Biafran state “through the principle of non-violence and international diplomacy in collaboration with other progress.

WHY HON. IDIMOGU DESERVES A SECOND TERM – Grassroots Publishers

Hon. Jude Chukwuemeka Idimogu (KSM) , Member representing Oshodi/Isolo II Constituency and House Committee Chairman on Commerce, Industry and Co-operative, Lagos State House of Assembly

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n these times where sophistry has become elevated to state policy, lies have become national policy and deceitful conduct is the order of the day, one must be careful in choosing persons to such a vaunted elective office as that of the House of Assembly. The House of Assembly needs somebody whose antecedents can be vouched for not someone whose only antecedents are at best shadowy.
In the lead up to any election cycle, politicians want to make promises sometimes bogus promises which they have no intention of keeping. It therefore becomes imperative that Oshodi/Isolo Constituents must seek a man whose word is his bound and who will do much more that he promises and that’s the character Hon. Jude Idimogu has exhibited in these over 3 and half years he has held sway as Honourable member representing Oshodi/ Isolo Constituency of Lagos State House of Assembly. Hon. Idimogu is a man of few words but he is one who keeps to his words. He is integrity personified. He doesn’t have to shout about his integrity because it is evident in his action as an honourable member.
Most office seekers today would seek to bamboozle the electorate with unverified and unverifiable projects just to get their way but with Hon. Jude Idimogu, his minders have little to worry about if any in that regard as his commitment to good governance are evident in his projects that dot the entire Oshodi/ Isolo landscape.
Here is a man who promised prosperity for all Oshodi/ Isolo Constituency as encapsulated in his agenda. Oshodi/ Isolo Constituency took a leap of faith with him and voted overwhelmingly for him to become the representative of the people. In giving him their mandate in 2015, Oshodi/ Isolo Constituents were mindful of his antecedents over the years especially since the return to democracy in 1999.
However, having assumed the mandate, Hon.Idimogu went about the business of legislation with a single minded focus for success beyond the ordinary such that not even the recession hit economy could stop him.Hon.Idimogu is firmly aware that it will be impossible to bring about prosperity to all Oshodi/ Isolo Contituency through his agenda without critical infrastructure like good road network, scholarship, boreholes ,empowerment of Youths etc.
Hon.Idimogu’s achievement are numerous. All over the Oshodi/ Isolo Cosntituency, Idimogu’s signature on roads and empowerments can be seen and accessed.
By re-electing Idimogu in 2019, Oshodi/ Isolo Constituency will be encouraging hardwork and not mere ethnic sentiments. We would be telling those who daily threatening fire should know that we are masters of our fate! People whose stock in trade is to promise what they know they don’t have the managerial skill to achieve cannot be entrusted with the commonwealth of Oshodi/ Isolo Contituency. Oshodi/ Isolo Contituency don’t need anybody to decide who they want, and we know who we want to return as our Honourable member come March 2019, and Hon. Jude Idimogu is the right choice.

NNPC to crash Price of Cooking Gas

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation takes measures to reduce the price of cooking gas in the country.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, is set to implement effective commercial framework that would halt the export of propane and butane which are major components in the production of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, also known as cooking gas.

The corporation explained in a press release by  Ndu Ughamadu, group general manager, Group Public Affairs Division, that the move to stop the export of propane and butane which is anchored by the Crude Oil Marketing Division of the Corporation would enable the Corporation boost supply of LPG to the domestic market thereby leading to a natural downward slide in the price of the product in the country.

The NNPC spokesman quoted Mele Kyari, group general manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division, COMD, of the Corporation,  as saying: “Currently some of our butane and propane entitlements are exported largely due to lack of vessels to make sure that these things come into the domestic markets and the absence of a commercial framework. What we are going to do is to make sure we put the right commercial framework in place so that those exports are converted into domestic consumption”.

Kyari who disclosed this at a strategy session said the Division was working in concert with stakeholders to create the enabling environment for in-country production of LPG and cessation of export of the country’s equity butane and propane entitlements due to absence of in-country vessels for transport and other considerations.

The COMD GGM said that the goal of the Division in 2019 is to complete the automation process in the marketing and sale of Nigerian crude oil grades which teed-off in 2017, noting that all hands must be on deck to achieve 100 percent, end-to-end conclusion of the process.

APC in Rivers Need Everybody to Recover

Amaechi and Oshiomhole

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]enator Magnus Ngei Abe, representing the Rivers South-East Senatorial  District in the National Assembly, says the All Progressives Party in the State needs the input of all its member to recover from the shameful state it is in.

Senator Magnus  Ngei Abe, representing the Rivers South-East Senatorial  District in the National Assembly,  has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State still stand a chance of resolving its current crisis if stakeholders appreciate the sacrifices made by members to build the party and show respect to one another.

Abe, who spoke during a Radio interview on Thursday monitored in Port Harcourt, also stressed the need for members of the party to be able to think and reason for themselves, saying it was time to act and save the state APC.

The senator described the situation the party in the state finds itself as a shame because some people mismanaged a situation that could have been better managed.

He said, “My own suggestion on the way forward is that I want to talk to our party members. I want people to be able to reason for themselves. Because we are now in a position where it is clear that one person cannot reason for all of us.

“We have to think for ourselves. We have to act to save our party. We have to understand how the party got to where it was. It was not by accident. It was by the deliberate actions of people who mismanaged a situation that could have been better managed. I believe that the reason people went to court is because they want justice.

“I think that as much as possible the party needs everybody. In this kind of situation that we have found ourselves, we simply have to accept the reality that where we are today as a political party is a disgrace.

“And that we can move ourselves out of this position; but we can only do that by people showing respect to one another and admitting the sacrifices that members of the APC have made for the party in Rivers State. Respecting the position of one another and then we can move forward.

“The problem the APC has found itself today is for the APC members. So I believe that the reason people went to court is because there is no justice. Without justice, there will be no peace. If we want the APC to move forward, grandstanding by anybody including myself will not save the party.

“I have heard Mr. Tonye Cole say the party can do without me. I refuse to respond to that because he does not understand what he is talking about. I think that as much as possible the party needs everybody.

“We need the Minister of Transportation, we need me (Senator Abe), we need Elder Chidi Wiyoka, we need Hon. Asita, we need, Oji Ngofa, we need Tonye Cole. Even Dumo Lulu-Briggs that have left the party, we still need them. We should bring people together. That is what politicians do. That is what leaders do. And that is what we need to do so that Rivers State can claim its place in the national politics.

“The only way we can do that is to bring everybody together otherwise we all might be the losers. If we are working together, as difficult as our situation may look, if we approach it together even from within the court we can still get justice.

“I believe that different parties are free to continue their cases. Myself and those of us who did the direct primaries are still going to Appeal Court to take another look at the judgment of the High Court,” he stated.

Abe explained that the High Court judgment recognize the Peter Odike Exco is the only legal Exco in the state that is not affected by any legal quagmire.

Senator Abe added, “And the only legal thing done by the party was the direct primaries organized by the legitimate Exco of the party under Odike. I believe that at this stage it is important that we come together and try to act as a party,” he said.

Amaechi reacts to blackmail reports, says “I have no time

Rotimi Amaechi
Minister of Transportation

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]INISTER of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Amaechi has reacted to blackmail reports against him, especially as he has asked an unidentified blackmailer to go to hell for asking him to pay him N5 million, saying he was too busy to attend to such a frivolity.
It will be recalled that in September last year; a blackmailer had requested that the Minister pay a total sum of N5m to stop a particular story against the backdrop that he, Amaechi did not attend to him. The yet to be identified blackmailer who called one of the Minister’s friends to demand for a ransom of 5 million naira, days after the Minister had a private meeting with journalists covering the Ministry, continued with his threats to Amaechi that he would go public if he did not respond to him.

A close source of the Ministry told Vanguard that the Minister was angry with reporters assigned to the Ministry over the private discussions that had become a source of blackmail from one of the reporters. The said meeting was meant for assigned reporters of the Ministry but several other journalists from print, television, bloggers and online media found their ways into the meeting. Ameachi who was apparently betrayed over a friendly meeting where nothing was expected to be published, cut off from reporters in the Ministry for three months.

The blackmailer has been blackmailing the minister to pay for the recording or else he (blackmailer) was ready to quote him out of context and make the whole world discredit the Minister’s loyalty to the President. On the issue that Mr. President does not read, Amaechi was actually stressing the fact that the President is focused on building infrastructures and does not care about all the negative things people write to distract him from his mandate. “And come to think of it, the President does not have all the time to read the entire write up by journalists that is why he has a media aide. Our President is not an ordinary citizen.”

His real statement was, “Corruption is a problem in Nigeria. The problem is that everybody wants free money but one good thing is that under this administration there is no free money at all and people are not happy about that. “One of my friends once told me that the solution to fighting corruption is to gather all the corrupt Nigerians and throw them into an ocean. This is because corruption has eaten deep into the fabrics of our society, everybody wants the easy way and you all know that when things like this have remained for a long time, it will not be easy to fight against.”
