[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Suspension of the National Chairman of the APC , Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by Edo All Progressives Congress (APC) over his role in the crisis rocking the state chapter of the party.
The decision followed the vote of no confidence passed on Comrade Oshiomhole by the Chairmen of the APC in the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Edo State.
According to a statement signed by Edo APC Chairman, Anselm Ojezua and Assistant State Secretary, Ikuenobe Anthony, “Consequent on the development, the State Executive Committee has adopted the vote of no confidence passed on him and the subsisting suspension order from the organs of the party in the state.”
They said the decision was necessary to prevent a repeat of what happened in Zamfara State, where the party was unable to field any candidate in elections.
“Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is the one behind the crisis in Edo APC. We have passed a vote of no confidence on him and he stands suspended from the party.
“We don’t want what happened in Zamfara State or other parts of the country to happen in Edo State.”
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he crisis in the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday deepened as the party announced the suspension of its two-time governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu from the party.
The party, however, said the suspension was temporary.
It was learnt that the development was not unconnected with the rumoured defection of the politician who is being alleged to have concluded plans to dump the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Grassroots Publishers online also further gathered that he has also perfected plans with the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole to clinch the party’s ticket for the next governorship election against the current state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki.
The party in a statement by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Chris Nehikhare, said that the temporary suspension was informed by his unwillingness to confirm or refute his rumoured defection to the ruling APC.
Nehikhare, in the statement posited that, the suspension will persist pending when the Redeemed Christian Church God pastor “acknowledges, accepts and addresses the issue of his decamping to APC.”
The statement added: “In the last few days, the Edo PDP has been inundated with calls and enquiries regarding the stories trending both in print and social media as it concerns one of our leaders, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
“The party leadership has patiently waited to hear or read his reaction to confirm or deny the stories, but to no avail.
“We boast of being a party of men and women of integrity and high moral standing. It is a brand we have earned and wish to maintain.
“As a result of the ‘uneasy quiet’ from our dear Pastor and the impression our silence will send to our teeming supporters and followers, Edo PDP is left with no option but to announce the EXCLUSION of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu from all PDP related activities with immediate effect, until he acknowledges, accepts and addresses the issue of his decamping to APC.
[dropcap]F[/dropcap]orty Eight-hours after the Appeal Court Panel sitting on Oyo State Governorship Election Petition gave its judgment, the copy of the judgment has not been made available to lawyers of the Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde, investigations have revealed.
Informed sources close to the judiciary in Ibadan told our Correspondent that the Lead Counsel to Governor Seyi Makinde on the election petition matter, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, has been left frustrated on the matter.
It was gathered that though Jegede instituted the process to secure the copy of the judgment immediately after the ruling, the Appeal Court has not made it available to the Counsel.
It was gathered that the staff of the Court of Appeal have told the lawyers that the Judges were trying to correct some errors in the judgment to prevent the errors from being made public.
“As of now, the copy of the judgment has not been made available and this could be dangerous. I can authoritatively inform you that Makinde’s lawyer initiated the process to get the judgment but he was frustrated. This is another reason for interested parties not to go to sleep, as something may be amiss,” the source said.
The source further said that the delay in releasing the court ruling may be dangerous because the Supreme Court has 60 days to determine the matter from the date of the ruling of the Court of Appeal.
Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba CAC, Seme Customs Command
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ttackers and hatchet-men, hired by some unscrupulous smugglers who are unhappy with the gains made by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration over its decision to close land border across the country, are at work in Seme, to destroy the good works of Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba and officers of the Seme Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS. Since the federal government directed all land borders across the country to be under lock and key on August 20, smugglers and those angry with the policy have been fighting back with so much ferocity.
They are now sponsoring social media influencers, bloggers and opinion molders to wage a media war against the NCS and the federal government, to pressure the government to drop the policy, which has been largely applauded by the International Monetary Fund, IMF, an organ of United Nations and other international partners to be very successful.
“On the border closure in Nigeria which has been impacting Benin and Niger, our understanding is that the action reflects concerns about smuggling that has been taking place
“It is about illegal trade, which is not what you want to facilitate,’’ Abebe Selassie, the managing director of the Fund stated, adding that suggestions by neighboring countries that the action of the Nigerian government violated the AFCFTA, is incorrect.
During his recent working visit to Seme Customs command, to ascertain the level of compliance, CG Ali commended the officers and men of the command for standing firm in the face of constant efforts by importers and smugglers to compromise them, warning detractors that their actions will be vehemently resisted.
Ali said “We cannot do business without you but compliance is lacking between you and our officers. Most of the things we do don’t comply with rules and that’s why we end up with weapons, Tramadol that killed our children.
“We end up with ammunition that bandits use to kill our people; we don’t manufacture ammunition in this country; if we do, it is only from one source and that source is well protected and documented.
But today, we have seen a lot of the ammunition in Nigeria. Where are they coming from?” Ali said.
Still undeterred by this retribution, these unpatriotic individuals have also sought to bribe some security officials now manning the borders, particularly personnel of the NCS unsuccessfully.
They have therefore ratchet up their campaigns and dangerous shenanigans after effort to get the NCS on their side to continue to sabotage the economy, failed.
So their decision to turn the heat on the service, to blackmail the Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) led NCS is not lost on many discerning Nigerians who have praised Buhari and the Service for implementing a policy that could make the nation transform to a self-sustaining economy within few years.
Unfortunately, the Seme Command and the Area Controller of the command, Mohammed Uba Garba have been caught up in the crossfire of cheap blackmail by those that are poised to roll back the gains of the border closure, which Comptroller General of Customs, Ali, told the National Assembly last month, has led to the increase of Customs Revenue to at least N5 billion daily.
It’s therefore, not a coincidence that those angry with this feat recently ramped up their campaign of calumny against the patriotic personnel of NCS who are implementing the border closure under severe conditions and sacrifice.
“Do you know that all the outstanding allowances of these security agencies are yet to be fully paid? In spite of this, they are standing firm refusing to be compromised.
It’s under this hard condition they are working, and some persons, for reasons best known to them are poised to attack their sensibilities,” the security analyst said.
On November 2, one of them finally reared his head after hiding for so long for fear of how Nigerians will react to the evil act.
Named Abubakar Aliyu, the saboteur claimed in his twitter account that some unknown personnel of the NCS have been collecting bribes from smugglers to bring in goods, even when the borders still remained shut.
He mentioned various bogus sums allegedly collected by some officers to allow smugglers have their way.
“That’s not possible with the retinue of no-nonsense and fierce looking soldiers, police, DSS, customs and other security forces taking position on ground at Seme border, with their tentacles spreading to Gbaji and as far as Igbo Elerin along the Lagos Badagry expressway to deter any ambitious smugglers.
“What many people don’t know is that there are more security men in mufti working to see that this policy is not breached. Even when you managed to bribe your way through the uniformed contingents, having your way with these ‘under cover cops’ will be like passing through the proverbial camel that wants to make its way through the needle’s eye,” Olawale Tokunbo, a security analyst familiar with land border matters told the magazine.
Curiously, Aliyu who the magazine learned is working in cahoots with some disgruntled smugglers did not mention names.
The accuser who shortly enjoyed media frenzy, no sooner he made the allegation and has now become an object of infamy on the internet, only made a sweeping suggestion that mischievous importers and smugglers are bribing their way through NCS personnel stationed along the Seme border.
“I’m still around that border, trying to compile my report,” he said in the mischievous tweet. He’s yet to release the report.
Expectedly, many patriotic Nigerians have seen through his mindset and now turned against him in the last few days, accusing him and his cabal of sabotaging federal government’s effort to prevent Nigeria from becoming a dumping ground of sort for banned goods and illicit weapons which the border closure targets.
They have equally accused him of plot to demoralized officers of the Service who are on ground rain or shine to make sure that the policy is enforced to the letter, even beyond the January 30 terminal date, temporarily set by the Buhari administration.
And despite the ambiguity surrounding his claims, the Controller in charge of the command, Mohammed Garba, the magazine was told, has swiftly gone to work to investigate the matter.
Indeed, his action is not because he doubts the integrity of his men. The controller is not also trying to prove Aliyu wrong, because “obviously there’s nothing to prove. As the thespian goes, he who alleges must prove. The Onus is on the accuser to prove his allegation,” Chuks Obioma, an importer with over 20 years-experience, at Seme said.
But Comptroller Mohammed probe has somehow paid off.
What was discovered will shock the most doubting Thomas’s.
Sources at the command disclosed that Aliyu is one of those that are not happy with the federal government’s closure of the border and having tried in their own diabolical way to have the policy rescinded but failed, they decide to launch a war of attrition against the Customs.
Even though, Aliyu has refused to answer posers sent to the same twitter handle to substantiate his allegation, sources at the border with Benin Republic, said the ‘Accuser’ is part of a clique of itinerant smugglers whose goods were seized by men of the command after the border was shut in August.
Their effort to get the goods released through the back door has failed and they now resorted to blackmail, the source said.
But the command has a bad news for the unpatriotic citizens: “we cannot be blackmailed and will not buckle under the pressure to demoralize our officers,” a senior officer at the command vowed.
Also, Hussaini Abdullahi Onawo, spokesman of the command has warned that “no amount of blackmail by aggrieved persons who may have lost their smuggled vehicles to customs,” will stop the officers from doing their jobs.
The officers appear right.
According to investigations, the command has recently impounded 55 assorted, state of the art automobiles from dare devil smugglers as part of the effort to enforce the border closure policy.
But the NCS under Ali seems to be merciful and has opened a window of opportunity for the owners to reclaim their seized items.
Nigerians are waiting to see whether they will take it.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Delta State government has assured Delta communities that the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa administration will not spare any efforts to ensure that peace and security are maintained in their environs, as these are the bedrock for sustainable development and progress in every society.
This assurance was given by the Governor, when he presented the Staff of Office to the new Monarch of Onicha-Olona, Aniocha North LGA, Delta state, His Royal Majesty, Obi Christopher Uzu Diji, Obi of Onicha-Olona, on November 5, 2019.
Onicha- Olona has not had a king in the kingdom for the past 25 years and this is the first time an Onicha-Olona traditional ruler has been presented with a Staff of Office by the State Government in over two decades.
Doris Warri Aboh, SSA-Media, Office of the Delta State Deputy Governor, reports that presenting the Staff of Office, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, who was represented by his deputy, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, commended the people for following and respecting the time honoured process of succession to the throne. He however, appealed to the people to accord the royal father the respect and understanding needed to facilitate his duties for proper administration of the community.
He said: “My dear people of Onicha-Olona, we are here to rejoice with you on this great occasion of the presentation of Staff of Office to His Riyal Majesty Obi Christopher Uzu Diji. No effort will be spared in the security of all communities as peace is a springboard for development”.
The governor appealed to the Obi of Onicha-Olona to discharge his responsibilities in a transparent manner by being fair and just to all his subjects.
According to him; “As the custodian of the tradition of your people, it is important that you do not in words or action, give cause to your subjects to doubt your ability to uphold the sanctity of their customs. I sincerely appeal to you to imbibe the democratic virtues of dialogue and consultation in all your dealings with the people.”
He also used the occasion to call on sons and daughters of of Onicha-Olona to take advantage of the various policies and programmes of the state government to improve on their production capacities, noting that Onicha-Olona was well known for its abundant agricultural production.
While thanking the people of Onicha-Olona for their continued support for the State government, the governor commend them for their various self- help efforts and assured that all legitimate requests made will be channelled to the appropriate agencies of government for necessary attention.
Earlier, the President General Onicha-Olona Development Union (ODU) Mr Okey Aligbe thanked the State Government for protective steps taken to restore the Kingship tussle that lasted over 25 years emphasizing that the Staff of Office presentation has brought peace and unity to the town.
He appreciated Governor Okowa for appointing indigenes of the town into key political positions, rehabilitation of Issele-Uku / Onicha-Olona road, renovation of primary and secondary schools and the intervention of the Rural Development Agency to restore electricity to the town.
The Onicha-Olona Development Union President General also appealed to the State Government to establish a higher institution, rehabilitation of the Onicha-Olona/ Obomkpa roads, reticulation of water pipelines to service the town, and perimeter fencing of schools in the town to enhance security.
[dropcap]F[/dropcap]or Years, the United Bank For Africa, UBA, plc, a Pan African Deposit financial institution, has demonstrated its leading role in the nation’s banking sector. It has continued to develop new products and invest on new technology for efficient and improved service delivery to its customers which has become the envy of other Banks operating in the country.
the Bank may have taken advantage of the flag off of the Lagos International Trade Fair organised by the Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry, LCCI, in partnership with the Pan African Bank to launch the ‘’self –printing Debit Card Machine, SPDCM.
The SPDCM, which is targeted at ‘’encouraging increased use of Debit Cards by the Bank Customers, according to Victor Osadolor, UBA Africa Chief Executive Officer,CEO, said would offer more options to pay to the Customer’’ anywhere.. According to him it would also allow for ‘’seamless transactions with great value to Customers and businesses.
Recall that the LCCI, in justifying its decision to partner with UBA, noted that it s the only Nigerian Bank operating in 20 African countries including the United Kingdom, United States and France, which makes it the most suitable that could offer the financial services that are needed by visitors and exhibitors at the Fair.
The Lagos state government may have thrown its weight behind the LCCI, in order to host Fair, at the Tafawa Balewa Square, popular, TBS, to make it a huge success.
This is evident going by the number of top government officials from the state that had attended the opening Ceremony of the Fair. One of them was Obafemi Hamzat, the state Deputy governor who was said to have represented Babajide Sanwo- Olu, the governor.
The other top government officials from the state at the Fair were Lola Akande, the state Commissioner for Commerce,Industry and Cooperatives and. Ajayi Oladele, a Special Adviser to the governor .
Hajia Mariam Katagun, minister of state, Industry Trade and Investment was said to be the only top government official from the Federal level at the Fair. Many had expected President Muhammadu Buhari to send Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President or Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the government of the Federation to represent him but he failed to do so, let alone sending a good will message to the Organisers of the Fair. Hajia Katagun, the minister of State, ho was at the Fair, according to sources, was said to have being at the Fair, on the invitation of the Organisers.
In spite of the fact, that the Federal presence was not really felt at the Fair, the Lagos state government may have filled the vacuum, which may have given Babatunde Paul Ruwase, the President , LCCI, president, LCCI that after all , the Lagos state government is solidly supporting them.
It is not surprising why the Fair Organisers did not feel the absence of the Presidency at the Fair as Ruwase, the LCCI, President, went about welcoming the dignitaries to the opening Ceremony of the Trade Fair at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Popular TBS.
Note that the theme of this year’s Fair, underscores the importance of a robust business interaction, which Ruwase, the LCCI, President said is to ‘’’create wealth and value for the advancement of the nation’s economy and the welfare of the citizenry’’.
Osadolor, the UBA Africa,CEO, who was elated by the Bank investment on SPDCM, was said to have told those that cares to listen that the Bank invested on the new technology as the world is tilting into a ‘’knowledge based economy’’. There is no gain saying the fact that businesses that would survive in the 21st century must invest in technology to remain competitive or be prepared to go under.
He gave kudos to President Muhammadu Behari led All Progressive Congress, APC, led government for improving the nation’s investment climate, stressing that ‘’ this is the major reason why the country is currently ranked fifteenth place in the global ease of doing business index.
The successful launching of the new product may have emboldened the UBA Africa, CEO, to make a bold Statement that the bank would continue to ‘’support initiatives aimed at boosting trade in the country’’.
He may have gladdened the heart of the Bank Customers who were at the Fair when he spoke on the delivery of its brand promises. ‘’ We are creating superior value for all our customers, because we believe they are the key to our everyday operations’’’, he had said.. This is because the bank’s small and medium scale enterprise banking unit over the years had been actively supporting small businesses with industry-specific loans that ensure maximum impact.
It is instructive to note that the Bank has keyed into the government intervention funds as a way of expanding access to credit facilities at competitive interest rates to Customers. This is in addition to providing services such as advisory and technological infrastructure that would help to reduce the cost of doing business in the country.
Ruwase, LCCI President And Other Dignitaries At The Lagos International Trade Fair
Again, Osadolor, confirmed that most of the Bank’s customers have really enjoyed free advisory services that have helped them navigate the very difficult business terrain. The Bank , according to sources also have businesses, latching on to its technological assets in order to improve its services as well as foster growth.
Many believe that the Bank have been consistently supporting Small and Medium Scale Industries, SMES, in the African Continent. Investigation shows that it has a huge amount of funds allocated to the SMEs.
It is not surprising why Tony Elumelu, the Bank Chairman and founder of Tony Elumelu Foundation, popular TEF, could raise his head high among his Contemporaries that‘’UBA is committed to supporting entrepreneurship’’.
Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos state Governor, who could not hide his feelings assured of the State’s commitment to ‘’promoting and connecting businesses across transnational borders’’.
“We shall leave no stone unturned to ensure that Lagos State truly becomes a 21st century economy which actively supports the growth of the local economy through improved ease of doing business initiatives, innovative incentives and interventions as well as quality service delivery to a well-motivated public,” he had said.
[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has declared that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has collapsed, losing its capacity to deliver development to the Niger Delta.
Speaking during a Courtesy Visit by the interim management committee of NDDC to the Government House Port Harcourt on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, Governor Wike said that the NDDC has degenerated into a cash cow for politicians
“Those who fought for the establishment of NDDC will weep that the Commission has deviated from its mandate. NDDC has collapsed. NDDC has become a cash cow for politicians.
“NDDC is now a political institution. NDDC stole our money. There was an agreement for the Rivers State Government and NDDC to collaborate for the construction of the Mother and Child Hospital. NDDC refused to pay her counterpart fund. Even the N800million paid by the Rivers State Government, the NDDC only paid N400m to the contractor and diverted N400million.
“If they don’t pay our money, we will Institute a legal action NDDC to retrieve our money “, he said.
He said the immediate past Board of the NDDC expended N10billion during the 2019 Election to stop him from getting q second term, but they failed .
“After the former Board released N10billion to remove me from office and they failed, they came here for a Courtesy Visit. I asked them why they refused to partner with states for the development of the Niger Delta”, he said.
Governor Wike informed that it was Niger Delta Governors that demanded the forensic audit of the NDDC because of the massive rot at the commission.
“Niger Delta Governors asked for the forensic audit of the NDDC when we met with the President. We also asked for the setting up of the Board of Governors for NDDC.
“I urge the interim committee to carry out a proper audit. You will meet obstacles, but be determined to do a thorough job”, he said.
He urged the people of the Niger Delta to work in unity to develop the geo-political zone.
On the leadership of NDDC, Governor Wike said that appointment of officials is strictly a function of the Executive Arm of Government. He said no other arm of Government can determine who runs the NDDC.
While congratulating the Acting Managing Director of NDDC and members of the interim committee, Governor Wike said he never be party to any plot to remove a Rivers person from a position of responsibility.
He said despite all the funds pumped into NDDC, the commission has accumulated huge debts with no meaningful projects across the Niger Delta. He regretted that the NDDC has also refused to patronise reputable contractors for projects.
Earlier, the Acting Managing Director of NDDC, Gbene Joi Nunieh said that the Commission is determined to partner with Niger Delta Governors for the development of the region.
She urged the Rivers State Governor to forget the past failures of NDDC and partner with the commission.
The Acting Managing Director sought the assistance of the Governor in the areas of health and education. She said some cottage hospitals completed by the NDDC, have been illegally occupied.
[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Muhammadu Buhari has approved an extension of the Joint Security Exercise across the borders in the four geo-political zones of the country otherwise known as Exercise Ex Swift Response till January 31, 2020.
It would be recalled that in August 2019, as part of measures to secure Nigeria’s land and maritime borders, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) as well as the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies began and intelligence agencies began a joint border security exercise codenamed Exercise Ex Swift Response.
The joint security exercise is being coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and has taken place in the four geo-political zones namely; South-south, South West, North Central and North West.
The Exercise is expected to promote interagency cooperation and increase preparedness to address trans-border security challenges such as terrorism, armed banditry, smuggling, proliferation of small arms and light weapons amongst others.
However, in a Memo addressed to the Sector Coordinators, Joint Border Operation Drill (Exercise Swift Response) Sectors 1, 2 ,3 & 4 by the Comptroller Enforcement, Comptroller Victor David Dimka for Deputy Comptroller General Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, informed that it was observed that despite the overwhelming success of the operation, particularly the security and economic benefits to the nation, a few strategic objectives were yet to be achieved.
“Against this background, Mr. President has approved an extension of the Exercise to 31st January, 2020.
“Consequently, you are requested to convey the development to all personnel for their awareness and guidance.
“Meanwhile, allowances for personal sustenance and fuelling of vehicles for the period of the extension will be paid as soon as possible”, the Memo said.
[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ollowing recent disagreements over what qualifies a vehicle to be classified as accidented, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said that for a vehicle to be regarded as accidented, it has to fall under certain category.
The Public Relations Officer, PTML Area command, Mr. Mohammed Yakubu who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen recently in Lagos said that a vehicle could only be termed accidented when the chasis or the airbag of the vehicle was affected.
Yakubu said, “If for instance, you have a dent at the back of the car or maybe the bumper of the car is not there or it has been dented from the side of car, you can’t call it accidented, it has to affect chasis or airbag of the car.”
He observed that there were laid down processes and procedure one had to go through in order to get certification from the Service that his or her vehicle falls under accidented vehicle.
In his words, “There is a process one has to follow in order to certify his vehicle as accidented, you cannot go and examine and call a car accidented. You have to apply; you have to examine to see what qualifies it as accidented before you can call it accidented. So, there is a process.”
On whose job it is to confirm that a vehicle is accidented or not, he said, “We have examination officers, we have them everywhere and that is why they are there. You have to apply, they have to see, the releasing officer has to go there and witness it; it has a process. So you have to follow that process. So, if it is not actually accidented, because of that process, you won’t even follow the process because if you do, before you get to the middle of the process, you will be cut down.”
Speaking on whose position takes pre-eminence in case of disagreement between officers of the Service and importers or their agents, the command’s spokesman stated, “Customs has the final say. That is why we are in the port, we have the final say and we have a process, we have a guideline, we have our valuation officers, we have our tariff, CEMA. So, nobody can just come and tell you that it is accidented while it is not accidented because it has a process.”
