[dropcap]A[/dropcap] husband one John Onyeme has reportedly beaten his wife to death following a running battle between the couple in Ladi-Lak, Bariga area of Lagos State. It was gathered that the deceased, Esther Onyeme, was a deaconess and proprietress of a nursery and primary school in the community.
Neighbours said John always accused his wife of adultery and for starving him of sex which often triggered their disagreements. It was gathered that the couple and their three children lived together on Ayorinde Street, Ladi-Lak, until about five months ago when Esther packed out in the heat of a fight and relocated to a church.
John reportedly went to the church on Friday, January 31, 2020, and beat her to a pulp. She was said to have been admitted to a private hospital in the community where she died three days after.
A resident of Ayorinde Street, Tope Adeyemo, told ThePunch that the woman had on several occasions reported John at the Pedro Police Station covering the neighbourhood.
Adeyemo said,“He had been beating the woman for a long time and she reported him many times at the Pedro Police Station. The woman ran a private school in the community. She was responsible and industrious but the man thought she was fornicating around.
“She left him five months ago when his trouble became too much. They have three children together. The eldest among them is 16 years old. They are now in their village in the East. It is disheartening.”
A neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that he had repeatedly warned John to desist from beating his wife to no avail.
“He normally beat her at night. He would chase her around the passage with a knife. I begged him to stop beating her but he said I should not interfere in their matters gain. I told him he would kill her one day. That was sometime last year. No one here would say good thing about John.
“He even accused a chemist of sleeping with his wife. He does not take care of the children yet he didn’t allow the woman to have rest of mind. It was a painful exit because the woman was hard working. She was the one taking care of the family,” he said.
Another neighbour, who wanted to be identified as Bola, said Esther established the school located on Oyeyemi Street, Ladi-Lak, about five years ago, adding that it was unfortunate her life was cut short.
She said,“It is tragic. She should be in her mid-40s. Most times, the husband beat her for denying him sex. Which woman would allow an irresponsible man to be having sex with her? She left home about five months ago when she could no longer bear his trouble.
“Some family members begged her to come back because of the children and she did. The same day she returned home, the man beat her. That was when she packed out of the house. She was diligent. She founded the school about five years ago. She was even planning to establish another school.”
Academic activities were on when City Round visited the school on Wednesday.
The headteacher of the school, who declined to give her name, described Esther as a loving woman, adding that they struggled to run the school.
“With God on our side, we are trying our best to keep the school going. She was a kind woman. She took care of the pupils and teachers and carried everybody along. She was in school on Friday,” she added.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for further investigation.
He said,
“One Apostle Friday Ugorji reported at the police station that around 9am on July 31, one Esther Onyeme, a deaconess in his church, informed him that her estranged husband, one John Onyeme, beat her to the point of death. The pastor rushed her to hospital for treatment.
“Around 10.30am on February 3, she gave up the ghost. The corpse has been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital Mortuary for autopsy. The suspect is in police custody.”
[dropcap] S[/dropcap]tephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba will host next month’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone, the Nigeria Football Federation has announced.
“We have finally settled for the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba for the qualifying match against Sierra Leone. The match will be played on Friday, 27th March 2020,” NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said at the weekend.
The venue, named after former Nigeria captain and coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi (of blessed memory), has hosted several international matches involving the Super Eagles and the Nigeria U23 squad, since it was opened two years ago.
Uganda was the first opposition entertained at the venue by the Super Eagles -in a friendly match – days after Nigeria sealed a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations ticket in South Africa in November 2018. The match ended scoreless.
The Eagles have since lashed Seychelles 3-1 (2019 AFCON qualifier) and pipped seven –time African champions Egypt 1-0 (a friendly) at the same venue, as well as enacting a scoreless draw with Zimbabwe in a pre- 2019 AFCON friendly in June last year.
The U23 boys turned back Libya and Sudan in 2019 U23 AFCON qualifying matches at the same venue.
With the Nigeria Football Federation having picked March 27 for the first match, the Sierra Leone Football Association is now most likely to opt for Tuesday, 31st March (the final day in the FIFAwindow) for the return leg scheduled for the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown.
Victory in next month’s Matchday 3 fixture against the Leone Stars will take the Super Eagles closer to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals, as they currently perch at the top of their pool with the maximum six points from their first two matches and a goals difference of plus three. A 2-1 win over Benin Republic in Uyo on 13th November was followed by a 4-2 whiplash of Lesotho in Maseru four days later.
[dropcap]A[/dropcap] committee, headed by President Roch Marc Christian Kabore of Burkina Faso, to study and make a full report on Nigeria’s land border closure with her neighbours has been approved.
The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government agreed on the decision to set up the committee on Sunday night in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at an extraordinary session of ECOWAS leaders convened on the margins of the 33rd AU Summit to discuss the issue and other pressing regional matters.
Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed in a statement in Abuja on Monday confirmed that Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, told journalists after the three-hour closed-door session that the meeting was attended by President Buhari and chaired by the ECOWAS Chairman, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic.
Onyeama said: ‘‘The President of Burkina Faso is charged with undertaking a full study of the situation, make a report and then we take it from there.’’
On when the report will be presented to ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, the Nigerian Minister replied: ‘‘As soon as possible, there are no timelines. But he is supposed to start very quickly, study the situation from all the affected countries and present his report.’’
The presidential aide further disclosed that the meeting also discussed West Africa′s new single currency, the Eco, and the situation in Guinea Bissau after the presidential election.
On the Eco currency, the Foreign Minister said: ‘‘Nothing has changed in respect of Nigeria’s position’’.
He added that Nigeria’s position was that the convergence criteria had not been met by majority of the countries, therefore there has to be an extension of time on the take-off of the single currency.
On Guinea Bissau, the Minister said ECOWAS leaders recognized that there was an appeal of the presidential election result and “they are waiting for the Supreme Court decision on the matter”.
Comrade Tony Iju National President of Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA)
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]here are fresh indications that efforts of the National President of Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Tony Iju to bring back the association on the part of peace is not going down well with some entrenched interests.
Tony Iju however pledged his unresolved determination at ensuring that peace reigns in ANLCA, and she remains an indivisible and unified association, not minding whose horse is gored.
Some appointed officials by the National President, last week have accused him of betrayal and abandoning their interests.
Recall that at the wake of the ANLCA crisis in 2019, the president had appointed some foot solders and caretakers to take over affairs of running the chapters because the elected chairmen had disowned him on the pages of newspapers, saying that Tony was not their president.
The chairmen were also suspended at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja December 2018, paving way for appointment of caretakers. However the caretakers could not take over the chapters due to eruption of violence and numerous court cases.
Speaking with Newsmen under anonymity, the aggrieved parties alleged that the President is now romancing the Taiwo Mustapha faction of ANLCA, while he maintains a frosty relationship with his Vice President, Kayode Farinto.
Some of the allegations levelled against the President was that he is now recognizing Taiwo Mustapha as Chairman of ANLCA Board which is against the ruling of the Federal High Court.
They also alleged that Tony recently visited the Secretary General of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha and the Minister of State for Transportation, Mrs Gbemi Saraki with some opposition faction.
According to them, Tony decided to go along with Segun Oduntan, Tin Can Chairman, and Lasisi Fanu from Seme chapter who are not in his camp.
A highly placed source within ANLCA confirmed to our correspondent that Tony was not also comfortable that his Vice President, Kayode Farinto had in his absence, completed a gigantic hotel at Ikorodu area of Lagos, he allegedly queried where Farinto got the money.
The source also alleged that at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in 2019, a peace resolution committee was constituted to chart a way out of ANLCA crisis within two weeks, but that because of some internal politics, the time was extended.
The committee is supposed to resume on 21st of January, but so far, no recommendation have come from them.
Some of the charge given to the committee was to ask all parties to withdraw their court cases with NECOM, and to find a way of achieving permanent peace.
Speaking, he said “The President is trying to play on the intelligence of people that defended him in his absence, I am sure you guys are aware that there was a time that this secretariat was locked by the other group with chains, and thugs, it took the efforts of some of us to ensure that the place is reopened”
“President is addressing Mustapha as BOT, even against the court ruling.
He invited Lasisi Fanu and Segun Oduntan to go with him to Abuja, knowing fully well that they are on the opposition, these are people that went to disown him on pages of newspapers. Yet he is now parading them as his good friends”
“We were on our own when he called us to come and face the war for him, but unfortunately, he sees us as a nuisance today. We want to tell him to retrace his steps, otherwise this tsunami will consume him”
“He is pretending that things are going well in the association, this is a fake news, he should not deceive the world because things are not going well”
“As I speak to you, things are not going on well between himself and the Vice President, if you watch their visits to Abuja, President was asked why his vice president was not there? This was the man that was holding forth for him when he went to contest elections at House of Representatives, why is he now dining with the opponent party today? He refused to come to his Vice president party”
“If he sees himself as unfit to rule ANLCA, he can resign voluntarily and allow those that are able to do it come in. It is not by visiting the minister, the SGF that would solve the problems we have with stakeholders in the port”
“Mr President should be asked why he has refused to visit the chapters he is governing for the past two years, visiting the SGS is not the solution to the problem of the common agent that voted him into office”
“Our expectation is for him to tell us what happened to Western Zone elections, all the chapters in the western zone, their tenure have expired, if the elections conducted in 2018 by some factions in ANLCA, if the President is validating that election, he should come out boldly and say so, because the election was not conducted by the ASECO nominated by the NEC”
“According to our constitution, we supposed to have two NEC meetings, but in 2019, we only had one, this is a sign of inefficiency on President part to run the association” he said
Our correspondent recalls that some western zone chapters where elections were conducted in 2018 included Muritala Muhammed Airport Chapter, PTML, Apapa and Seme border.
But the source speaking further said that “For your information, the tenure of Tin Can have expired since July last year, the President should tell us what is delaying the Tin Can elections, it is only the NEC that has power to extend the tenure of any chapter chairman for not more than three months for election to hold, this is ANLCA constitution”
In an exclusive interview with DAILY TREND NEWS however, National President of ANLCA, Tony Iju said the association would not be derailed in its quest to achieve peace by side talks.
Iju said as far as the association is concerned, the peace move he made in December 2019 was best for the association in its unification exercise, even as he appealed that anyone that is not happy with the peace move should bury their hatchets.
Speaking, he said “It is true that last year, I spent some time to face my carrier in national politics, so this year I want to consecrate attention on building the ANLCA that gave me a mandate”
“As far as I am concerned, the association is one indivisible association, you can see Joe Sanni, the National Publicity Secretary is working, you can see Dada Agubuzo the National Treasurer working, you can see John Oforbike, the Western Zone Chairman working, they are all in their offices, you can go and verify”
“The board is coming to an end on 7th of February, I wish them well”
“We have a whole lot of problems as it were, what we want to do is put our heads together and have a formidable freight forwarders and customs brokers association in order to tackle our problems”
“Our members are not actually happy with us, they are feeling that they have given us a mandate and we are not utilizing it, so I want to shield off all these local politics to face the challenges of my members.
I don’t want to weigh myself down with all these little talks” he said
Tony said that apart from the visit to the transport minister, he said the association is going to visit Minister of Finance, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) NAFDAC, Comptroller General of Customs and even the National Assembly.
He said “My rights as an executive president is to carry everybody along and work in tandem with my NECOM, if anybody is not happy about it, I am sorry about it, they should try and be happy.
We need to come together to have a formidable association”
“We are going beyond ANLCA to even meet with other associations”
“If my Vice President is not happy, I would plead with him to be happy, I am taking this as a serious concern to tell him to be happy and let’s move forward, and if their is any reason that he is not happy, I would correct it”
“As far as I am concerned, I was inaugurated on 14th of April 2018, and from that day, I became the president of everybody”
“Moving to chapters is a secondary thing, if there is any reason the chapters could not solve their problems, they have written to me and that is why I am taking their challenges to Abuja”
“The chapter chairmen relate with their CAC and give us reports, as the president you don’t expect me to be going to chapters when I already have chairmen on ground, I go there when they call me that my attention is needed” he said
Mr. Lucky Amiwero President of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA)
[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA) Mr. Lucky Amiwero has has revealed that the use of abandoned empty terminals at Kirikiri area of Lagos State is one possible way of ending the port congestion at Lagos ports, and the attendant traffic gridlock that has hindered its efficiency.
In a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari which was sent to pressmen, Amiwero said the Kirikiri Liter Terminal has the capacity to receive 15,000 containers. According to him, most of the empty space that was converted to terminal in the Kirikiri lighter port area, were identified during the port congestion in 2001 by the Special Committee on Action Plan for Clearing Cargo BackLog, which eventually assisted in decongesting Lagos port in 2001.
He said Kiririri Lighter Port has four empty terminals that can accommodate 15,000 loaded containers, which will ease the congestion in Lagos and shift some of the pressure from Apapa Tincan to Kirikiri port area.
“This will eliminate the possible litigation that will be generated from the international community and import trading community for diverting Lagos bound cargos to other ports, which have serious legal and financial implication in terms of the restricted diversion clause in the contract of carriage (Bill of Lading).
The following terminals; Brawl phase 1, Baco liner, Kirikiri phase 2 and Kirikiri phase 3 are empty terminals that are idle.
These terminals were used in 2001 port congestion and can still be utilized to clear the cargo backlog in Lagos Port by redeeming the country’s image and save the trading community from litigation, clearance and logistic complexities that is associated with diversion,”
He said that Brawl phase 1, Baco liner, Kirikiei phase 2 and Kirikiri phase 3 has the capacity to accommodate 2000, 4000,3000 and 2,000 containers respectively.
However, he called on the FG to declare a state of emergency in order to utilize available empty terminals in Lagos, adding that Lagos port congestion has backlog of cargo, which is held up as a result of accessing Apapa and Tincan Island Port alonside other logistics issues that constitute the long stay of cargo and ships in Lagos Port.
He said, Lagos Port congestion has backlog of cargo, which is held up as a result of accessing Apapa and Tincan Island Port and other logistic issues that constitute the long stay of cargo and ships in Lagos Port.
The state of emergency is to wave the “complexity of the lease agreement with the empty terminal owners at kirikiri Lighter Port and the cargo traffic elements on the concession agreement with concessioners.
This is to enable the faster movement of more containers from the wet Ports within Lagos by barges to the Kirikiri Lighter Port, which will eventually prevent international and local litigation on the deviarting of cargos to other ports, which is not port of destination in contract of carriage .
He also advised the federal government to utilize part of the 7percent port development sur charge to dredge the channels leading to KLT.
“The part of Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA) collection of 7% port Development Levy, should be utilized to create navigable channels and berthing facilities, so as to move cargos from the wet Port to the Kirikiri Lighter Port, which will help to ease the pressure from gridlock axis ,thereby avoiding the litigation for deviating cargos destined for Lagos Ports to other ports.
In line of the provision of of the NPA Act Section 32 –(a), authorized the authority for the maintenance, control and management of the channels and approach to the to Nigerian Ports, which includes, making the channels free and navigable to vessel.”
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Federal Government had in May 2017 directed the Nigerian Ports Authority to immediately embark on a 24-hour ports operations across the nation.
While signing the Executive Order, the then Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, had stated that “the Apapa Port shall resume 24-hour operations within 30 days of the issuance of this order and there shall be no touting whatsoever by official or unofficial persons at any port in Nigeria.”
Osinbajo had even listed some of the government agencies that must operate inside the port.
According to him, some of the agencies authorised to deploy their officials to the port are; the Nigeria Customs, Immigration, Police, Port Health, Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)
Other government organisations such as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) were sent packing from the port. The idea of the executive order is to ensure that Nigerian ports become competitive and a hub in West and Central Africa where cargoes are released in a timely manner.
The idea is also to see a reduction in the cost of doing business at our ports. It is disturbing to note however that after two years of issuing the directive for ports to work 24hours, it has remained a difficult task to achieve.
First, lack of good port access roads; this was one of the major fears expressed by many port users as at the time the Vice President came up with the Executive Order. The second fear raised by operators was the lack of adequate security at the ports, coupled with poor lighting of the port environment at night.
It would be observed that two years down the line, none of the challenges and concerns identified by maritime experts have been addressed.
The only aspect of the port that seems to work 24 hours is the berthing of vessels at the port and other shoreline activities. Taking delivery of consignment on the other hand has failed completely.
Recently, there were allegations that terminal operators and shipping companies were not usually on ground for operations for 24 hours, especially on weekends and public holiday.
The Nigeria Customs are not also working 24hours, whereas at the wake of the executive order, the service out of “eye service” had came up with a roaster for it’s officers, especially at Apapa and Tin Can Island Port on how they would be operating shifts. All that have now gone down the drain.
Clearing Agents have also been accused by the Nigerian Ports Authority of not coming forward at night or on weekends to take delivery of their consignments, despite all the “provisions” that have been put in place by the authority.
It has been a blame game rather than a workable concept among the stakeholders.
All the concerned parties have tendered excuses on why they cannot be at the port round the clock.
Freight forwarders were recently contesting the rational behind the shipping companies and terminal operators collecting demurrage charges for weekend operations even when they are not available. They also raised alarm that on public holidays, the Ports are on shut down, yet agents are made to pay demurrages.
They had queried, “Were the terminal operators and shipping companies available on the public holidays on Monday and Tuesday? So why should they charge? They were not around. The licensed customs agent would like to take his consignment even on Sunday if the terminal operators open on Sundays”
“The port is supposed to work 24 hours but it is not working, I cannot go to the port by12 midnight to take my cargo today because of the security lapses.
The federal government should look into how to address these security lapses too”
“The roads are not also good enough to move our consignments, so these are the impediments where we are having the challenges”
Terminal operators must stop public holidays and weekend charges because they are not rendering the services”
The Customs on its part have argued that its officers are always on ground on Friday, Saturday and Sundays, except public holidays.
According to the service, once the freight forwarders have completed their cargo documentation, the port gates are always open on weekends. Due to lack of adequate security inside the port, the Customs have however said that its Customs Processing Centre (CPC) cannot open for 24hours operations, especially at night for fear of being attacked.
“Don’t expect such a delicate facility to be opened even until midnight, because the CPC is the engine room of the Customs. But once you are done with documentation and it remains to take delivery, Customs will never be your problem” a source said
The failure of the Executive Order have made stakeholders to wonder the seriousness and level of commitment of the Muhammadu Buhari led administration towards the nation’s maritime industry.
While Nigeria, giant of Africa is still struggling with implementation of 24hours port operations, all over the world today, 24 hours port operations is already being practiced including at neighbouring ports Cotonou, Ghana and Togo.
Though we noticed that the present administration has actually taken some steps at addressing some challenges confronting ease of doing business at the ports, one of them is the meeting up of a Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) chaired by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.
The committee on getting inaugurated had hurriedly released a report card on a 60-Day National Action Plan on Ease of Doing Business which was implemented from February 21, 2017 to April 21, 2017. The report had highlighted 31 completed reforms across the Council’s eight priority indicators.
However, all that is now ‘story for the gods’The second noticeable effort made by the government was the setting up of a presidential task force to control and ease off the traffic gridlock in and around Apapa port.
President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the committee and made Osinbajo the Chairman, again. The activities of the committee today still leaves a lot to be desired because maritime truckers have fragrantly disobeyed the order and continued to queue up on port access roads, without any consequences or punishment placed on them by the presidency.
Our advise is that now that the Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has shown some level of commitment in his second coming by asking for suggestions from operators and for them to set agenda for him, the government should take the suggestions of the stakeholders seriously and act on them, these are the people who knows where the shoe pinches. It is our believe that PEBEC, as well as the Presidential committee on traffic gridlock did not really engage stakeholders in the industry on the best ways to achieve speedy clearance of goods from the ports and best way out of the traffic congestion, this is why they have not achieved any results.
[dropcap]B[/dropcap]arely a week of his resumption as the Acting Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit , Zone ‘A’ Lagos State, Deputy Comptroller Usman Yahaya has continued to live up to his statutory responsibilities especially in the area of anti-smuggling operations.
His quest for outstanding performance using credible intelligence has begun to yield positive results with the interception of various contra ban goods ranging from 2,065 jerrycans of vegetable oil of (25litres each), 1,185 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 1500 jerrycans (25lts each ) of diesel all amounting to a Duty Paid Value of N67,362,500.00 .The seizures were made between January 7th to 14th, 2020.
The goods were seized along different unapproved routes within the Unit’s areas of coverage.
According to a release issued by the Unit’s Public Relations Officer, Jerry Attah , he said that the feat is coming as a result of series of meetings held with their Sectional Heads, Team/patrol Leaders where the Controller had unveiled the management’s mandate
bestowed on him. Which includes blockage of all revenue leakages, trade facilitation and intensification of anti-smuggling operations at various entry
points, Seaports, land borders and Airports within their areas of jurisdiction in the south west zone.
DC Yahaya also warned smugglers and other duty evaders of the dangers that lies ahead for them if they do not engage in legitimate trade, as some have started counting their losses.
He said “You will agree with me that the fight against smuggling can only be won if all hands are on deck”.
Yahaya also called on the media and the general public to support the fight against smuggling by providing necessary intelligence that could assist the Service in reducing smuggling to its barest minimum.
Meanwhile, DC Yahaya’s redeployment was part of the Comptroller-General’s strategy to rejig and reposition the Service for greater efficiency and effectiveness, especially in the areas of revenue generation, trade facilitation as well as combating smuggling.
Deputy Comptroller Usman Yahaya is a quintessential and an enforcement guru who hitherto was the Coordinator of Strike Force, Zone ‘A’, before he was posted to FOU ‘A’ as the Acting Controller.
He took over on Tuesday 7th January 2020, from Comptroller Aliyu Mohammed, who was elevated to a new assignment as the Acting Sector 4 Commander of Border Drill
Operations code named Ex-Swift Response.
The assumption of office by Usman Yahaya at FOU ‘A’ has sent panic to all smugglers and non-compliant traders knowing very well his antecedents as an enforcement Czar. He however thanked the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) and the entire Management team of the Nigeria Customs Service for considering him worthy and assured he will work assiduously with all officers to justify the confidence reposed on him.
The Nigeria Customs Service has allocated revenue figures to various commands and areas to meet up N2trillion Target for 2020.
Controller General of Customs , Col. Hameed Ali in a recent circular sighted by our reporter , approved the revenue generation target and directed immediate implementation.
The circular signed by Talatu Mairo Isa, Deputy Comptroller General in charge of Tariff and Trade showed monthly, weekly and daily targets allocated to various commands and formations across the country
Apapa and Tin can Commands got the highest and second highest annual targets of N607,176,076,930.33 and N507,343,170,932.09 respectively. Apapa was also given a daily target of N1,807,071,657.53 and weekly target of N12,649,501,602.72 with a monthly target of N50,598,006,410.86.

Ports Terminal Multiservices Limited Command, the country’s number one vehicle importation port ,got annual target of N238,224,920,038.88 while Portharcourt Area 2 command in Onne was given N238,224,920,038.88
The service started hitting over a trillion Naira annual collection some three years ago under its present CG, who recently directed Area Controllers to forward list of Customs officers suspected to be revenue risk to his office for sanction.
Ali had warned during a recent visit to Lagosthat his administration will not sparecustoms officers seeking to make money from their job outside their legitimate earnings
Isa wrote in the revenue sharing circular that the allocated figures were arrived at based on command peculiarities
[dropcap]E[/dropcap]meka Ugoh, 33, attacked the 20-year-old victim at a house party in Edmonton, north London after she twice refused to have sex with him the night before. A man has been jailed for nine years after being found guilty of raping a woman while she was asleep
Twice the previous night Ugoh tried to have sex with her at the house party in Edmonton, north London.
On both occasions she clearly said no and sent him away.
However, on the morning of New Year’s Day 2018, the victim awoke to find Ugoh raping her. She reported him to police.
Ugoh was charged on June 25 2019 and appeared at Wood Green Crown Court August 14 where he pleaded not guilty.
A jury took just 90 minutes to find him guilty on February 10 after a trial at Wood Green Crown Court.
Detective Constable Rob Bushell said: “Even though Ugoh knew that the victim did not want to have sex with him, he decided to take advantage of her being asleep to rape her.
“Thanks to the strength and patience of the victim in supporting this investigation, we have successfully removed a dangerous offender from the community.
“I urge anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence to contact police without delay so that at the very least, they can be supported.”
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Public Relations Officer of the PTML Command, Nigeria Customs Service, Yakubu Mohammad has attributed the protest by some Agents at his Command this afternoon to non compliance Agents who are relying on “Valuation Outside,” instead of paying the real valuation given to them by the Customs.
Yakubu also said most of the protesters are not real Agents, but touts who are aggrieved that the Customs have blocked their fraudulent ways of livelihood.
Explaining what is “Valuation Outside”, the Command’s spokesman said, ” For example a vehicle is surpose to pay N3miilion , the Agent will go and forged valuation outside the Customs to pay N2million. If that happens, the valuation officer will placed ‘Alert’ on such vehicle.
“Do they expect the Customs officer to allow them carry such vehicles.? For sure multiple alerts even from Abuja will be placed on such consignments” he said.
This afternoon, Agents stage a peaceful protest at the entrance of the Customs Area Controller’s office at the PTML command, causing panic and fear.
Their complains were that Customs placed multiple alerts even after giving them value and they have been doing that to extort more money from them, as well as demurrage.
Meanwhile, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Dixon Florence quickly put the situation under control by advising the protesters to be trade compliance and pay their generated values from the Customs.
