Keyamo Reacts To Allegation Of Prosecuting Akpabio For EFCC

[dropcap]H[/dropcap]on. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, has written a letter to the editor of online publication, Sahara Reporters, in reaction to an article published on the platform which claimed he was contracted some time ago by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute former Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio.
The article was published on Thursday with the caption “Femi Adesina: Our bootlickers are so clever by half.”
The writer claimed that Mr Keyamo was on a hot seat when he served as Minister of State, Niger Delta Affairs last year under Akpabio, the minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
However, in the letter to the publication dated May 22, Keyamo described the argument as “factual inaccuracy”.
He wrote: “In the said article, there was a clear factual inaccuracy when the writer wrote as follows:
“’Adesina is on the hot seat facing same public mess as Festus Keyamo who had to work as a junior minister under Godswill Akpabio, the same ex-governor he led the EFCC prosecutions against earlier when he used to pretend as an activist lawyer.’
“Nothing can be farther from the truth. I decided to keep a dignified silence in the first few weeks after my assumption of office as Minister of State, Ministry of Niger-Delta Affairs last year when some mischievous and/or ill-informed individuals kept spreading the narrative in the social media that I once prosecuted Senator Godswill Akpabio on behalf for the EFCC.
“I kept mute because I do not always bother myself to respond to all factually inaccurate issues concerning me that are raised from sources that are not credible news outlets. If I do, I would always be distracted from my work as a public officer.
“It was only when The Guardian newspaper later swallowed that narrative hook, line and sinker without the slightest effort at fact-checking last year that I wrote to the newspaper correcting them. However, out of embarrassment, they decided not to make my response as prominent as the original article – a popular trick adopted by most news outlets that are too ashamed to boldly admit their errors. Now, Saharareporters has made the same mistake.
“Even without searching on Google the cases I have prosecuted, a simple telephone call as a journalist/writer to the spokesperson of the EFCC would have duly informed you that at no time was I ever engaged by the EFCC to prosecute Senator Godswill Akpabio and I never did. All the stories about that have been nothing but social media nonsense.
“As far as I can recollect, at no time was Senator Godswill Akpabio charged or arraigned by the EFCC in any court of law for any offence. So how come I was engaged to prosecute a non-existent Charge?
“Kindly retract that portion of your article. As for the other assertion that I used to ‘pretend as an activist lawyer’, I have chosen to ignore that as it is not fact, but opinion.
“Finally, I hope you will make this correction as prominent as you made the said article.”

UN, Buhari, ,others mourn Annan, former UN scribe

Kofi Annan

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the government and people of Ghana over the death of Kofi Annan, former United Nations (UN) Secretary General.

Annan, who spent two terms as the head of the world diplomacy body stepping down in 2006, reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday in Switzerland after a brief illness, aged 80.

Buhari, personally called President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana from London, and told him that Nigerians and ECOWAS member countries shared in the deep loss, considering Annan’s strategic influence in global affairs and his vision for the repositioning of the West Coast and Africa.

President Buhari, who conveyed his condolence through his media aide, Femi Adesina, in Abuja, noted that Annan’s origin and home would always be traced to Ghana, but his exceptional leadership roles, humanitarian spirit and contributions to global peace and development would remain indelible in the history of the entire world, especially the efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa and launch of the UN Global Compact.

As the first elected UN staff to lead the world organisation and first African to win the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the UN, Buhari stressed that Annan’s humility, nobility and love for humanity set him apart for global greatness, achieving recognition and commendation for the reform of the UN’ bureaucracy and multiple interventions to bring peace to the world.

Buhari also sent his condolences to the wife of the diplomat, Nane Maria Annan, and his family members, staff of the United Nations and the global organisations he headed, like The Elders, which was founded by Nelson Mandela.

Similarly, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres opened the floodgates of tributes in Geneva, describing the Annan as a guiding force for good.

“It is with profound sadness that I learnt of his passing. In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations. He rose through the ranks to lead the organisation into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination,” Guterres said.

“Like so many, I was proud to call Kofi Annan a good friend and mentor. I was deeply honoured by his trust in selecting me to serve as UN High Commissioner for Refugees under his leadership.

“He remained someone I could always turn to for counsel and wisdom – and I know I was not alone. He provided people everywhere with a space for dialogue, a place for problem-solving and a path to a better world.

“In these turbulent and trying times, he never stopped working to give life to the values of the United Nations Charter. His legacy will remain a true inspiration for all of us.

“My heartfelt condolences to Nane Annan, their beloved family, and all who mourn the loss of this proud son of Africa who became a global champion for peace and all humanity.”

Meanwhile, House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, described the death of Annan as a huge loss to Africa and humanity.

Dogara, through his official Twitter handle @YakubDogara, on Saturday, said the late Annan had etched his name on the sands of time as a true son of Africa, describing him as a quintessential leader and accomplished diplomat, who dedicated his life time to the progress of humanity.

Dogara added that the late Ghanaian diplomat was a true global ambassador, who used his life to promote peace across the world.  The Kofi Annan Foundation also announced the death in a full statement that detailed how he passed on and requested that his loved ones be allowed some privacy in the meantime.

“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness.

“His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side during his last days. Kofi Annan was a global statesman and a deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world. During his distinguished career and leadership of the United Nations he was an ardent champion of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law.

“After stepping down from the United Nations, he continued to work tirelessly in the cause of peace through his chairmanship of the Kofi Annan Foundation and as chair of The Elders, the group founded by Nelson Mandela. He was an inspiration to young and old alike. Kofi Annan was a son of Ghana and felt a special responsibility towards Africa.

“He was particularly committed to African development and deeply engaged in many initiatives, including his chairmanship of the Africa Progress Panel and his early leadership of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).

“Wherever there was suffering or need, he reached out and touched many people with his deep compassion and empathy. He selflessly placed others first, radiating genuine kindness, warmth and brilliance in all he did. He will be greatly missed by so many around the world, as well as his staff at the Foundation and his many former colleagues in the United Nations system. He will remain in our hearts forever.

“The family kindly requests privacy at this time of mourning. Arrangements to celebrate his remarkable life will be announced later,” the statement reads.

Tony Blair, former British Prime Minister, who expressed shock over Annan’s death, said on Twitter, “he was a good friend whom I saw only weeks ago.”

Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairman, African Union (AU) Commission, described him as “a great man, a dear brother.”

Kumi Naidoo, new leader of the Amnesty International (AI), said, “He was warm, compassionate and intelligent, exuding dignity and grace.”

For Filippo Grandi, UN Refugee Chief, Annan was an “international leader, wise mentor, valuable adviser, good friend and role model.

“We at UNHCR and millions of others around the world will miss him very much.”

Who is afraid of NDDC forensic Audit Probe?

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was established in the 3rd Quarter of the Year 2000, under the Act No.6 of the National Assembly which provides for the repeal of the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Areas Commission Decree 1998. This bold move was geared towards a re-organized management structure for an effective Commission by the Federal Government, in favour of the Oil producing areas of the Nigeria, otherwise referred to as the Niger Delta region.

The agitation for resource control by the Niger Delta region which has resulted in the 13 percent derivation fund, paid directly to the Niger Delta States, is obviously not commensurate to tackle the ecological challenges and environmental degradation which is the Siamese twins of oil exploration. The NDDC was therefore envisioned to stand in the gap, as a direct presence of the Federal Government in the region.

After 19 years of the establishment of NDDC, it is worrisome, that the vision of the founding fathers has remained far-fetched, rather, the Commission became a prisoner of sorts, to vested interests who had turned it into an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM). The annual budget of NDDC, which runs into billions of Naira has not made deeply felt impact in the lives of the people of the region. It turns out that a few people have become billionaires by constantly calling the shots in the Commission. Nobody dares ask any questions, else, one would have dared to ask how NDDC awards contracts for the supply of desks and chairs, to schools in the region, to the same contractor, at over N3bn annually. There is evidence that this annual contract is never executed. Rather, the contractor delivers a couple of desks and chairs to his own warehouse, and uses same to service similar contracts from State Governments in the Niger Delta region.

The rot in the Commission had eaten to deep that despite billions of Naira allocated to meaningful projects, only activities like “Training”, “Desilting”, “Solar Power” and “Workshop” get quick attention, and gulp huge sums of money, like the N6.4 billion that generated controversy, sometime ago. The IMC of NDDC reportedly received a request for payment of some phantom skills acquisition programme, to the tune of N3.842bn, representing about 60 percent of the total sum of N6.404bn. The refusal of the IMC to honour such spurious request, it is believed, is partly the reason for the numerous petitions and “sudden” probe.

President Mohammadu Buhari chose to rejig the Commission after several scandals and petitions bothering on fraud, but decided that it will be worthwhile to know the history of funding of the Commission, so as to chart a course for the future. This resulted in the Forensic Audit of the 19 years of the Commission, which, of course, includes the first 4 years of the Buhari administration.

No sooner had the Audit began, than fireworks rented the air, in the guise of petitions. A barrage of petition has inundated the Presidency, all in an attempt to stop the audit.

When it seemed like the petition wouldn’t yield the desired result, the sponsors of the faceless group of petitioners resorted to using another arm of the Government, to stop the President. This time, they resorted to the National Assembly!

It may sound funny, but how come the National Assembly wants to probe, as a matter of urgency, the Prof. Kemebradikumo Daniel Pondei led Interim Management Committee (IMC), charged by the President to run the affairs of the Commission during the period of the Forensic Audit? One would have expected that any lapses stemming from the audit, would be addressed upon completion of the audit but the haste to initiate an audit of the supervisors of the Audut looms a garb of a well-conceived distraction attempt.

Obviously, the forensic audit will expose contract padding and duplication, multiple contracts by selected folder companies, shady and underhand dealings of colluding Civil Servants, including those who resort to petitions when affected by routine transfer, from the “juicy” Headquarters among other anomalies.

It appears that the bold move by the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio to usher in a new lease of life at the Harold Dappa Biriye building, Headquarters of the NDDC, by redeploying some of the old hands there, meant a threat of extinction to those who have, over the years, made brisk business with those contacts. The uproar that trailed the transfer is not ordinary. The outcry has dwarfed that of a baby hastily withdrawn from the mother’s breast!

It is important to note, at this juncture, that the Civil Servants are just small fishes, in the big river of things happening in NDDC. They are, though, indispensable in the happenings, but small fishes, nonetheless.

It is alleged in some quarters that the major clog in the wheels of progress of the Niger Delta region are those in whose hands it is to create the enabling laws for the success of the NDDC. And as an Ex-lawmaker, Sen. Akpabio is obviously bringing to bear, his wealth of experience in the National Assembly, which only complements his experience as an Ex- Governor of a critical oil producing state in Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State. No wonder he quickly cancelled the consultancy contracts for the collection of statutory payments of 3 percent of the annual budget of oil companies in the region. These contracts which were being handled by Candour Capital Limited as well as Starline, was a huge surge pipe for siphoning billions of naira accruing to the NDDC, which was paid to these contractors as their “commission.” The companies are believed to be owned by former and serving Legislators, Politicians, albeit through fronts. The cancellation of these contracts certainly unsettled the real owners of the companies, and so, the move to probe the IMC, while they are yet to complete their 19 years audit, needs no further explanation. It is what it is; a distraction!

Apart from these consultancy contracts, most of these legislators, especially those heading the various Committees on NDDC and Niger Delta, in the National Assembly, allegedly have several funny contracts, to their name, most of which are fully paid for, but never executed. A certain Senator from Delta state and a House of Reps member from Ondo state were fingered in this regard. Yet these contacts are an annual feature in the budget of the Commission. These are among the various infractions in the Commission that the forensic audit was meant to unravel.

Again, it is worrisome that the NDDC, has after 19 years, not been able to complete her Headquarters complex, in Rivers state. Thus, NDDC, has remained a tenant, at the Harold Dappa Biriye House, where they were paying a whooping N300m annually, even when evidence shows that the building was a donation by the Rivers State Government under Dr Peter Odili, a decision that is yet to be rescinded! It is a matter of probe for the Forensic Auditors to ascertain who is fraudulently collecting this money. This amount, ordinarily, should be a reason to hasten the completion of the Headquarters, to stop the bleeding of scarce resources, but how can that be when there are people gladly fishing in the troubled waters?
This is also the situation in most state offices of the NDDC. The Imo State office of the Commission,
for example, which is located along Owerri-Port Harcourt road, near the Appeal Court Complex, has not seen any activity in years. It was abandoned on the first floor. Who knows if checks may reveal that provision is made in the annual budget of the Commission for this project.

This piece should not be misconstrued as an attempt to shield the IMC from probe. No! The IMC is peopled by equally falling humans, who must, by nature, have their flaws. It therefore means that they’re not foolproof. But it is only reasonable to allow them complete the very daunting task of a holistic audit of the Commission, after which their own tenure will be scrutinized. This will ensure that there is no compromise and that the very wonderful idea of a forensic audit is not botched.

To this end, the various studs thrown at the IMC, only gives one primary indication; some people are definitely not comfortable with the reality of a forensic audit.

So, who is afraid of the probe?

Is it the IMC that has spent only 6 months in office? What harm would have been dobe in 6 months, that ‘urgently’ needs to be addressed, so urgently, that the forensic audit of 19 years should be thrown under the bus?

Is it possible that the 6 months old IMC has seen more funds, in a COVID-19 era of crashed oil prices, than the last 19 years, some of which were an era oil boom?

One can easily deduce that someone, somewhere is dead-scared of the outcome of the NDDC Forensic Audit, and can do anything to make sure it does not succeed. These faceless enemies of the region must be stopped and the Forensic Audit concluded in record time, for the benefit of the beleaguered people of the Niger Delta region.

It is no gainsaying that Sen. Godswill Akpabio and the IMC need the support of all the Niger Deltans, at this time, to help stop the NDDC cabal that has taken into their custody the collective patrimony of the people of the region.

President Muhammadu Buhari must not allow himself to be misled into endorsing such an attempt at undermining his good intentions to sanitize the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and by implication, the Niger Delta region.

Delta Reps Caucus Endorses Okowa’s ‘Operation Delta Hawk’

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]embers of the Delta caucus in the House of Representatives have endorsed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s move to establish a new security outfit in the state.

The caucus said it was impressed by the governor’s decision to set up the security outfit known as “Operation Delta Hawk ” in view of the prevailing insecurity in the state, ranging from herders-farmers clashes, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, who led the caucus on a solidarity meeting with the Governor at Government House, Asaba, disclosed that the caucus visited to thank the governor for his initiative on rising insecurity in the state through the proposed security outfit.

According to Elumelu, we are here to express the unalloyed support of the caucus to His Excellency’s decision to set up a security apparatus in the state, which has already been named Operation Delta Hawk.

He also said that the caucus was appreciative of the way and manner the state government had been fighting the Coronavirus pandemic and for providing palliatives to vulnerable Deltans during the lockdown period.

The minority leader, who was in company with Reps Ossai Ossai, Victor Nwokolo and Ben Igbakpa, disclosed that they also came to consult the governor on the contentious Infectious Diseases Bill before the House.

“We have come to visit our Governor to interact with him, but most importantly to congratulate him because since COVID-19 started, we have not had time to come because of the lockdown so we had to seek permission to come and thank him immensely for the manner in which he has carried out the issue of COVID-19.

“On the floor of the House, we pride ourselves as people from Delta because our governor has been able to distinguish himself creditably in the manner in which he has catered for the people of the state.

“We are proud of him because apart from being governor, he has also been very empathetic with the plight of Deltans.

“We also came to communicate with him on the things that has been happening in the House most especially Infectious Diseases Control Bill and to discuss with him on the inter-state lockdown and how it can be sustained to discourage people moving from various states to another.

“Aside implementing the lockdown, we also congratulated the governor on his decision to set up ‘Operation Delta Hawk’ which we believe will help in solving the insecurity problem that we currently face in Nigeria and not even Delta alone.

“The measures he has taken so far in addressing the insecurity as it relates to Delta is something we are very proud of and that is why we are here,” he said.

He stressed that with regards to the infectious diseases bill before the lawmakers, they were in Asaba to seek the governor’s opinion as a medical doctor and on how the Delta caucus will approach the issue.

According to Elumelu, we were elected by Deltans to represent their interests and whatever views the governor may have collated from the opinion of Deltans will form the focus of our action on the contentious bill.

On his part, Nwokolo said that setting up of Operation Delta Hawk was a proactive step in line with Community Policing initiative of the Inspector-General of Police.

“What he has done in setting up the security outfit is in the right direction and that is one of the reasons why we are here to commend him for being proactive because the actions he has taken are in the right direction because we can’t keep folding our hands.

“All over the world we are talking about community policing, so setting up Operation Delta Hawk is in that direction which will bring up a team of professionals in the real sense of security professionals to advise the state in what direction to go.

“He is being proactive and we must commend him because you can’t be putting infrastructure for your people yet they are killing them every day.

“He is one man who doesn’t believe in self-help and being lawless and that’s exactly what he has decided to do and we are optimistic that he will record huge success from this decision as he has always had in the past.

“He believes in the State House of Assembly and whatever he does must be backed up by law,” he added.

In his contribution, Igbakpa commended Okowa for measures at re-opening the state’s economy after the lockdown.

“Most people, especially the daily-income-earners suffered immensely during the lockdown; a lot of people are suffering but government alone cannot come to their aid no matter the level of palliative that government will bring to them.

“So, the essence is to open the economy and let certain parts of the economy function, like the construction industry. We are very much in support of the re-opening of the state economy.

“We know that the pandemic is still there but we have to learn to live with it because COVID-19 is real; we must maintain all protocols as directed by the NCDC,” he said.

COVID-19: FG overrules Governors, says ban on Religious gathering not lifted …Warns against mass consumption of Hydrxoychloroquine, other unapproved drugs …Sultan tells Muslims to ignore governors, observe Juma’at, Edi-el-Fitr prayers at home

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]igerians, particularly of the Muslim faith are a bit confused on which directive to adhere to as regards religious gatherings in their respective states. This is more pronounced because of the Friday (Juma’at) prayers and forthcoming end of Ramadan (Edi-el-Fitr) prayers and celebrations.

While some governors have lifted ban on religious gatherings and asked residents to participate in congregational prayers, the Federal Government held a different opinion insisting that the ban on gathering of more than 20 people was still in place.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 control Boss Mustapha on Thursday warned of the dangers in allowing large gatherings without respite in COVID-19 cases and deaths.

He reiterated that the ban on gatherings of more than 20 people remained banned.

Mustapha, who spoke at the daily briefing by the PTF in Abuja, emphasised the “need for states to diligently implement and enforce compliance. Particularly, I underscore the need for the governors to provide personal and strong leadership, carry the policy of community ownership to the grass-roots and create deeper awareness.

“Governors are also advised on the decision taken by some of their colleagues to permit large gatherings as such decisions could inadvertently endanger the elderly, the sick and those with underlying factors during such gatherings. The strong advisory from the PTF is that large gatherings beyond 20 persons remain prohibited and should be adhered to”.

The SGF also announced that the PTF would work with the National Assembly. The House of Representatives has  inaugurated an Ad-Hoc Committee on COVID-19.

“The PTF on COVID-19 is pleased to inform you that in order to underscore the seriousness attached to this COVID-19 pandemic, the House of Representatives has set up an Ad-Hoc COVID-19 Committee.

“In deepening the existing collaborative spirit, we shall work together with the legislature to be more productive and add value to the overall delivery of service to Nigerians on behalf of whom we hold our responsibility in trust”.

Many governors have opened up their states for religious gatherings. These include Cross River, Ebonyi, Kano, Borno, Zamfara and Bauchi, among others.

But, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has advised Muslims to observe the Edi-el-Fitr prayers at home in accordance with the PTF-issued guidelines.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mohammed Bello has resisted pressure to open worship centres in Abuja.

Apart from Cross River State which has no virus case yet. The active cases in some of the states reopening the worship centres are: Ebonyi (12), Borno (122) and 24 deaths, Zamfara (8), Kano (690) with 36 deaths and Gombe (41) and three deaths.

Defending the governors’ position, Jigawa State Governor Badaru Abubakar, told State House reporters at the end of the National Economic Council meeting at the Presidential Villa that “the issue has been resolved because, at our last meeting with Mr President, the President was clear that the Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 should meet and agree on steps to be taken, and it has been discussed today and commitment has been taken by today’s NEC that the Governors’ Forum, the Presidential Task Force would work hand -in -hand to see to the end of COVID-19.

“A committee was formed today that will look up to the eventual opening up of the economy. Sometimes you will see a different approach by different states, that doesn’t mean that there is loggerhead between the states and the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

“Some peculiar situations require some peculiar solutions and that is why at times you see such and it will always be discussed with the Presidential Task Force so that we will always be on the same page”.

The PTF has also raised the alarm that Nigerians have started stockpiling chloroquine in large quantities.

Mustapha said: “Through the surveillance system set up by the PTF, we have received reports that Nigerians have been purchasing Hydrxoychloroquine in large quantities. We wish to reiterate that this drug has not being certified for use in treating COVID-19 in Nigeria by the relevant health and pharmaceutical authorities.

“Self-medication of any kind, is fraught with the danger of increasing risks of avoidable casualties. We, therefore strongly warn against self-medication. If you are sick, please seek medical advice and if you are confirmed positive, kindly self-isolate in an approved facility. The COVID-19 is highly infectious and dangerous”, he said.

He noted that the PTF had consistently answered questions and provided explanations on the categories of persons and services exempted from some aspects of these guidelines particularly as it relates to restrictions on inter- state movement and curfew.

According to him, for the avoidance of doubt, essential workers including medical personnel, journalists, fire service personnel, telecommunications workers, are all exempted.

He said the Inspector General of Police has further clarified the categories of essential workers in alignment with the guidelines and has issued instructions to security agents to work on the approved exemptions.

“With this clarification, we sincerely hope that the persistent complaints of harassment by these categories of essential workers, especially medical personnel and journalists would be put to rest so that we can harmoniously work in battling this pandemic.

“The PTF COVID-19 urges all essential workers to go about their legitimate businesses carrying with them valid means of identification and to exercise courtesy in approaching security personnel. I sincerely apologise for the inconveniences”, he said.

Edo 2020: Ize-Iyamu, Obaseki, others lock horns in APC primaries

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hat’s happening in Edo State today was similar to what took place in the 2004 US Presidential election which as you will recall was a polarizing time in in the country. Everything was reduced to red and blue. John Kerry was the devil incarnate to Republicans, while George Bush was the devil incarnate to Democrats, and there was no room in the debate to consider each man on his own merits, nor each issues on its face.

It was as if the fate of the World was hung in the balance just as the fate of Edo State is hung in the balance between two political gladiators today. Leaders of each party whipped Americans into such a hyperventilated frenzy that otherwise, intelligent Republicans started to believe that if John Kerry won the White House would cease to exist, while Democrats felt that if George Bush retained the White House we were all doomed. So it is today in the eyes of the storm of this blind partisanship Etsako born analyst.

The fate of Edolites are locked in this forth coming experiment of influence called election. The only thing expected of them is to pray, hope and wait for the outcome of the gladiator’s battle particularly with the Covid 19 pandemic not everyone can participate in the election be it direct or indirect system of primary for fear of being infected. Indeed, many are the challenges militating against the prosperity of Edo ahead of the coming election.

All the aspirants in the forthcoming Edo Governorship primaries are not greenhorns in the political arena. They have tasted power and so know what it is. The election will pit the incumbent Godwin Obaseki against a familiar foe that were on the trenches with him in the 2016 general election. This is not unexpected though but one thing that is certain is that whatever becomes of the Edo APC primary election, the incumbent Godwin Obaseki is sure to be in the race in the platform which will be obvious at that time but if the others didn’t arrive at a consensus then the tide is sure to favor the incumbent on same platform of the APC. Despite the crowded aspirants jostling for the APC ticket it will soon be clear how many will remain in the party by the time the party fenced out other aspirants after one candidate has emerged.

The political ideology of a party ought to be a binding force that keeps politicians together in their chosen political party whether they lose out in an election or not. But because personal interest reign majesty over political ideology that doesn’t even exist in our party system in Nigeria, it becomes difficult to control desperate aspirants after every failed election.

After four years of Obaseki’s reign with tough political battle, all of the previous aspirants and new entrants are back to the trenches. Have things changed? Would Obaseki second coming be embraced by all Edo people? Or will Ize-Iyamu who was the opposition candidate in the 2016 election be given a nod? A better question will be the issue of zoning. Former Governor Lucky Igbenedion from Edo South governed for eight years. Comrade Governor from Edo North governed eight years. The tenure of former Governor Osunbor from Edo Central, was terminated by the Court ruling that brought in comrade Adams Oshiomhole from Edo North who completed a two term of eight years.

Incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki from South is almost completing his first four years. But the forces that brought him into the political scene seem to be against his return for a second term as the tradition had been. The implication is that, the political calculation would be sustained only if Obaseki is allowed to return for a second tenure. However a change of government will short change other zones in the existing zoning formula. This is because a new governor from Edo South will be a political suicide to Edo Central and Edo North. Those Senatorial district have to wait for another eight years before their zoning can return to them. Obviously, no new governor would do single term irrespective of the vows and covenant that he would sign before swearing in. Once in power, the language are never the same. Will the new governor be willing to do only one term? Did you remember our incumbent president was supposed to do one term? Will Edo North and Edo Central be willing to supervise Edo South for a straight 12 years as governor of Edo State? These questions have their answers tucked in the womb of time.

The more worrying fact about Edo election will emerge after the primary election of both the APC and the PDP. Politics is not totally predictable because, human behaviour is involved, there can be no direct cause and effect among the Political variables. One touching Concerned to me about the events that would be happening after the Edo State Primary Elections would be the high level of double allegiance that will characterise the political scene. Am not a prophet but a political scientist. The science of Politics will play out in Edo State, where it will become obvious that humans are not Scientific materials that can be predicted to produce same results consistently over time. There is no Circumcise hands in politics. No sacred hands that can’t fail in political predictions because human are changeable molecule unlike scientific elements.

Political reality has distinctive properties which make it unamendable to the forms of explanations used in the natural science. Nothing is new about conflict in politics in-fact, disagreement is the atmosphere that creates political phenomena. Politics itself is conflictual. That’s why politics does not necessarily aim at total elimination of conflicts. What is expected at this point of our politicking in Edo State, is for leaders to come together to define the limits of such conflicts and thereby create ways for mitigating it.

The people of Edo State should not be carried away by the ongoing Cloud-lessness political battle. They should not allow themselves to be manipulated to believe that 2020 Governorship election would be the most important election of their lifetime, which it would may well have been, but we can be certain that when the 2024 election rolls around it will also be the most important election of our lifetime. The news flash is that even in the year 2028 governorship election in Edo, it will be the same story all over again.
To expect to see an Edo that would have lesser conflict in the future is to wait forever. Can you remember the game that played out in Akwa- Ibom between Former Governor Akpabio and his own former Aide who is now the incumbent Governor? The deepening divide between our leaders are not purely for our interest. Because as a political science graduate and a Broadcaster am aware that the currency of politics is power and influence. How they get it is not as relevant as getting it. The masses are merely the guinea pig for these power hustlers, so it couldn’t have been for our collective good. Our founding fathers got it right, and within the frame work of our democracy there is room for leadership and courage and vision and all those good things that makes the old Bendel and Mid- Western region great and strong.

We depend on leaders with course and vision to keep us headed down the right road, but from time to time there’s vacuum. From time to time, we find ourselves in a state of such profound drift and i keep wondering whether we will ever see our way back to the way it was in the Bendel era because these days we a

The Political pendulum swings back and front in the heart beat of Nigeria. Currently, we are at the troubling end of its arc. I have spent all my adult life working with various level of politicians i can’t say have seen it all but i know when power is abused and when limits are exceeded. The Lucky Igbenedion and the PDP era veered Edo off a principled course of development, then Comrade Adams Oshiomhole surface as the Messiah to return the State back to the path of development as envisaged by the founding fathers but today we are forced to ask if the same Messiah is out to return the State back to the hands of those he had previously claimed it from. The opposition are definitely praying for this moment to come for the APC for them to leverage upon. We must not forget that it was this same kind of crisis that removed PDP from power.

We are yet to see a house that divide against itself that still remained the same. It is a question and not otherwise because how we’ve let things slip to where politics is no longer about doing good but about winning elections and destroying opponent is still tales. The stakes in our politics are always too high. Its all the same. Even in the Edo State Senatorial and House of assembly election we threw caution to the wind in defending our stands. I was a victim of that war of words. The tensions we created particularly in the media was needless. Of course, Political intrigue and smear tactics are nothing new, but we must all remember that we are first brothers before we became opponent.

Whether politics failed or succeed Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Comrade Philip Shaibu are from Etsako. Politics will not change their history. If we are conscious about this fact then we would discover that we are not fighting an enemy but ourselves. I have always work with politicians outside Edo State. My attraction to Edo my own state was the Unity and comradeship that existed between Adams Oshiomhole and Philip Shaibu as far back as 2007.

Today, the two people that got me interested in our politics are on the trenches. I weep as i write this and i passionately plead for both of them to reconcile again.I mean true brotherliness reconciliation, am not talking of political reconciliation but as it was from the beginning. Because Edo State and Afemai land will not come to an end with the current administration.
INTERESTING STORIES FOR YOU

We ought to find some way to inject competition into a tired, rickety system and see if that doesn’t help. This is because competition drives everything in our society. But the missing link is that, we have turn competition into conflict. Conflict exist when two people wish to carry out act that are mutually inconsistent. Conflict is good and not bad because politics in its true sense of it is conflictual by nature. Once there is the cause for inter group relations, conflict becomes inevitable and peace must be given a chance.

Conflict is indeed not in the best interest of Anyone. Many things that Governor Obaseki did in his first year in office that the entire state commended for taking everything in their stride and worked like a charm with all Edo adoring his administration, my disappointment today, is that all of a sudden no one seem to see anything good about the same Obaseki anymore. We only sees his weaknesses and not his capacity anymore. The quality that made him the most preferred aspirant in 2016, it is amazing to note that those same quality that made him the most qualified are no more seen in him. “How has the gold become dim? the bible once ask. Shall the prey be taking away from the mighty? The Holy scripture also ask. But who will provide the answers to those soul touching questions? Because conflict is in favor of the strong and never the wise. But has the worst happened? Can we not still salvage this situation in Edo State? Is there no third party that can come to settle this crisis in Edo State? Have we run out of alternative options? Has Diplomacy failed? It is only when Diplomacy fail that war usually breakout. Diplomacy has not failed at this point because no one is patient to listen to the view of the other.

Indeed Edo State is soaked in tension and anxiety. The State has a fragmented political class. All aspirants are busy dissipating their energy on Obaseki and rarely addressed issues. First it was Obasek’s certificate, later it was his style of leadership, his neglect of party structures and many other issues reared their heads. The ongoing consultation by politicians is more about abuse and war of words with hire media mercenaries to do a media hatchet job against both the incumbent Governor and his deputy. They have been malicious, relentlessly uncouth and deliriously loquacious stigmatizing the Deputy Governor of Edo State as a Covid 19 patient an allegation they later regretted by tendering apology to the Radio and Tv station they raised alarm. What a primitive way of seeking relevance in a civilised society like ours? How do a pot confront his potter? Have we run out of human resources as we seem to have run out of ideas? Where else can a son who has been disowned by his parents who seeks to skin him lay his head? This was why Bob Nesta Marly said ‘’ You can fool some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time ” We can’t all have been wrong at the same time.” The truth is that it is the media handlers of this aspirants that has created unnecessary tension as if the State was on fire when there was no spark anywhere. Caution must start from the media handlers. We must not talk because others are talking. The sea of Edo political waters could appear to be calm but deep. This you won’t understand until you attempt to trouble the waters. The polity has been heated almost to a boiling point. It is as if some people are determined to waste the state away if they cannot have their way. So much hate and venom have been spewed in the mass media and social media, not by the aspirants themselves but by their mercenaries. We have witness governorship primaries in Edo State before, none has been divisive and hate filled as this ongoing campaign. The aspirants themselves are not the problem but their media Aide who are seeking relevance and undue favour from their pay masters. Only few went beyond decent and acceptable limits. In their struggle to undermine one another, real developmental issues that affect the people of our state were relegated while wars of words are given prominence. The polity will in the next few days will be turbo-charged.

Nigeria Politics has become a blood sport; its all about winning, and only little about governing. Good candidates are discouraged from even seeking office because they have not lived campaign perfect lives while weak candidates are propped up by party leaders as best and the brightest when in truth they might just be the least objectionable. This is true because in 2007 and 2011 Primary elections, PDP rigged out incumbent Senator Francis Alimikhena to give their ticket to candidates that they couldn’t stand up to defend publicly all in their bid to show and display influence. We need true and effective and inspiring leadership. For Edo to have a governor that can unite the state, we must all come together to resolve the ongoing differences before the primary election of the APC in June. This is because the State will be deeply divided should we continue in this manner to the general election. The issues are not unresolvable. The Governor of Edo State should as much as possible make the public move for reconciliation with his ex Boss. It is not an insult but statesmanship to steal the show. What is life without compromise. Every issue can be compromised i don’t believe that compromise is inevitable at this stage. We loss some and gain some. In politics the rule is to draw your friends close and our enemies closer.

To compromise doesn’t mean to sell out. It doesn’t mean that you sacrifice your principles. It doesn’t mean that you bend to every special interest other than your constituents. It means listening to the opinion of others and respecting those opinions and recognizing the value in searching for solutions built on consensus and yet it is within this great divide that we find many of the root ills of our Political system. We’ re all driven by our own impulses, and there are as many different justifications to seeking office as there are candidates doing the seeking, i observe that majority of the people doing the seeking for a career in politics do so with reasons that are noble and admirable. Its what happened next that got me so concerned. Business of government should be a value business just like any other. Politics is not winning. It’s doing the right thing. That to me is success. If you get re-elected, that’s great and if you don’t get reelected you can move on. There are worse things in life than losing an election. Life goes on. It is hard for God not to work when useable vessels are available. Politicians have to ask themselves how they want to be remembered, and to accept that they may likely won’t be remembered at all. What do you want that snapshot to be? This is so because most politicians have their footprint washed away by the next wave of politicians.

The Following are the Patriotic Edo Aspirants eyeing Obaseki’s job. These men are ready to lay eggs for Edo to move forward.

ENGR. CHRIS OGIEMWOYI

He was a former Governorship aspirant with the incumbent Governor in the 2016 primary election. Though couldn’t secure the party’s ticket but remained in the party after the primary election. Ogiemwoyi is known for his integrity and moral uprightness. He’s mature and responsible to bear leadership burden based on his experience both in the oil industry and public service. He is not new in facing political pressure as a former minister of works. One thing going for him is his steadfastness. He is an ideal faithful party Stewart. He dedicated himself to his party the APC despite other available options. He is indeed a mature politician. If politics is a game where faithfulness counts then Ogiemwoyi is the man to look out for.

DR. PIUS EGBERANMWEN ODUBU

A refined gentleman happily married. Immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State. He is a man who exhibited complete loyalty to Adams Oshiomhole while in office. He was a former Governorship aspirant in the 2016 race with the incumbent while he was still the deputy to former Governor Oshiomhole. Pius Odubu is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court. He also has B. A in Political Science. A thoughtful politician never envious of others and ready to suffer persecution than to compromise his believe. Though he had tough running battle with his former Boss over his ambition but Pius Odubu was never found wanting. He is never a desperate Politician and self satisfactory. His ambition set him against his former boss but there was indeed no law that stop him from aspiring. A careful monitor of his utterances withing the period shows that Dr Pius Odubu was a thoroughly breed politician. He was never seen in the media exchanging words with his Boss despite the cold war that characterised the last part of their tenure. He displayed Statesmanship when he abandoned several personal and official responsibility to join the incumbent Governor in campaigning during the main election. In a clime where humility and Service is acknowledge no doubt Pius Odubu would’ve been the man to beat.

GENERAL CHARLES EHIGIE AIRHIAVBERE (Rtd)

Former Army general with skill and uncommon appetite for knowledge and self development. He spent better part of his life to serve the nation despite multiple options. He is service prone and result oriented. It’s a way of life for general Charles in displaying outstanding leadership quality inherent in him. These quality granted him speed in his service where he grow to become Director of studies, Nigeria Army School of Finance and administration. Deputy Director Commander CFO among many others. General Charles is a member of Several prestigious Professional bodies like : Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM) Institute of Certified Public Accountant of Nigeria (ICPN) etc. General Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd ) is an exposed and well travelled international resource person who has delivered lectures at various conferences on National issues and security matters. It is painful we are living in a society where intellectuals are assume not to have a campaign perfect life. If our society is concern about the future of this generation to wet the appetite of the Youth with creativity and education, then general Charles is the best hand among others to handle such sacred task.

OSAGIE IZE-IYAMU

Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu is the most controversial Politician Edo State has ever produced. He is either quoted out of context or mention in every dispute. Any Political analysis since 1999 that didn’t carry the name Osagie Ize- Iyamu is yet a complete analysis. That’s the extent of his influence in Edo politics. Ize- Iyamu was former Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Edo State Government during the lucky Igbenedion era between 1999 and 2007 Under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) He was the Director General of Oshiomhole 2nd term Campaign Organization and Coordinator of the Goodluck Jonathan / Sambo Campaign Organization. A brief review of his profile shows a high level of inconsistency. He has deserved an award for decamping from one political party to the other. He was once a National Chairman South -South of the defunct Action congress of Nigeria (ACN). Defection is a major Characteristics of a core Nigeria Politician. Ize-Iyamu is definitely not a learner in politics. He is indeed one of the oldest and most consistent in Edo Political affairs. He has massive supporters and loyalist. He is tough but harmless. If the Political calculation is to handover the state to a core Politician that has taken politics as a career then Osagie Ize- Iyamu is the game master to consider.

GODWIN OBASEKI

Immediately after taking the oath of office Governor Godwin Obaseki declared his intentions to hit the ground running in delivering on his campaign promise he made. I remembered he did promise to increase the revenue based of the State. Reduced the State dependence of crude oil. He did promise to make the State an economic hub through increase in small and medium scale business, Agricultural activities as well as technological environment for industry to thrive. This he said was possible through his police on ease of doing business. He did promise to expand the infrastructural based of the State to be able to carry skyscraper with a vow to build a robust human intellectual capacity. The creation of 200,000 employment and supporting the growth of over 20,000 micro small and medium enterprises with further creation of 50,000 associated jobs were prominent in his resolve among many others. How far was he able to achieve all he promise would play out in the forth coming primary election. If the lives of the people have been impacted the people would speak in his favour. The Man Goodwin Obaseki is a decendant of the famousely illustrious Obaseki families in Edo. He is well educated and attended school in New York where he obtained First degree and Masters. He has an impressive career spanning over 30 Years. He is a serious minded technocrate and an economic Manager per excellent. He has been accused of not playing politics but no one has ever accused him of corruption or mismanagement of the State economy. That is a key factor that may work for the return of Governor Godwin Obaseki. Those were also the qualities that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole saw in him that made him prefer Obaseki above all the above aspirants in the 2016 election. But what has change is left for historian to dig out. But if Edo State is interested in a corrupt free Governor who will not play politics with public interest, then Governor Godwin Obaseki is the best man for the job. Several quality made him to stand tall because i serve in his media team in 2016 but the much i know about him couldn’t be expressed for fear of biased.

There was a time in Nigeria when Nigerians actually enjoyed politics. The rules were clear. The players were matured men as Bisi would say, ‘who knew the worth of material wealth as against the value of humanity. They made their choices and each left their mark. These gentlemen have different kinds of fellowship from whom they drew strength. But today, rather than aspirants drawing courage and strength from their supporters, their supporters are engaged unguided utterances. This was why former President Jonathan emphasised that his ambition or the ambition of any politician is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. The Nigerian Politicians do not demand for blood, it is the Nigerian youth themselves that usually make their blood available for politicians in search for stomach infrastructure. Our youth must not forget that those, whom they are willing to die for; are not ready to die for themselves. And soon as they get into power, everything about them will change. Promises will change, acquaintance will change, language will change and all the weaknesses they are seeing on the incumbent will suddenly become inherent in them. That’s why there is series of falling out between close associates and friends as we have witness in Edo State and other parts of the country. If this is the trend, the Nigeria youth should bear in mind that they got no place in the scheme of things. The Edo people are familiar with all the aspirants in the state and they have enough information to consider in making their choices. They know those who are out for them and those who are coming to test their influence. For those who believe that money will determine the winner in the forth coming Edo Primary election, remember that some of the money that was shared in the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in the last 2016 primary election, some of the dollars and naira did not fall on fertile ground. Some may have fallen on stones and thorns and did not bear any fruit or else Obaseki would not have won in 2016 if their money fell on fertile soul; because those that were against Obaski in 2016 are more than those that are against him today. The game is just starting whether the four other aspirants will arrive at a consensus to battle the incumbent is still an unfolding game because the variable of Political Science are not as predictable as the natural sciences.

IDUMUJE-UGBOKO CRISIS: Was Obi Albert Nwoko III murdered?

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he question is now ringing louder and louder with the passing of each week. Was His Royal Majesty, Obi Albert Nwoko lll murdered ? What actually happened the day he died ? Was he sick ? Did anyone see him just before his death was suddenly announced ?

For the wives of the king, the answer to these questions is not anecdotal. Their husband was murdered in cold blood. And they want to unravel the mystery behind this cruel barbarity.

But how did this rustic village arrive at this tragic point where a king well over 90 years of age could be allegedly murdered ?

Before August, 2015, Idumuje-Ugboko, a village in Aniocha North Local Government Area, LGA, was a serene forestry settlement. It was indeed in an unusually gay mood in 2015. This was because a distinguished scion of the village was going to build a university and a golf course at the village. The king, His Royal Majesty, Obi Albert Nwoko lll, JP, MON, and his Obi-in-Council had given their approval. A meeting of the four federating villages known as Izu-Ani also attended by the community’s development union had also been held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 and endorsed this project.

Still, on Saturday, July 11, 2015, the Idumuje-Ugboko Development Union under the leadership of its President-General, Mr Bennet Odor plus former Presidents-General in attendance gave their nod to the University and golf course establishment in Idumuje-Ugboko after a presentation by Prince Ned as he is fondly called. These full approvals by all the important organs of the kingdom inspired HRM Obi Albert Nwoko lll to write Prince Ned Nwoko through his company, Linas International Ltd on Friday, April 10, 2015, to communicate the kingdom’s approval.

But on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, Idumuje-Ugboko rumbled. A strange letter had been circulated all over the village and even read in church. The letter claimed HRM Obi Nwoko lll had repudiated the approval given for the establishment of the proposed university to be called Star University and the golf course. The whole village was jolted by this volte face.

It soon came to the knowledge of everyone that the letter emanated from the son of the king, Prince Justin Chukwunonso Nwoko often referred to as Prince Nonso. The village suspected foul play and demanded to see the Obi to authenticate the letter as even the signature on the letter looked suspicious. However, Prince Nonso backed by Princes Ejimofor Fredrick Nwoko , Richard Obiajulu Nwoko and Dennis Uwadiegwu Nwoko among others had already fortified the palace with some youths and suspected thugs and blocked every attempt of the leading traditional figures to see the king. They allegedly went as far as seizing the Obi’s phone so that Prince Ned or any other person against their self centred mission might not be able to speak to him.

Unable to continue tolerating this impunity, Prince Walters Eziashi who was the community’s President-General,2008-2012, petitioned the Commissioner of Police , Delta state Command on September 14, 2015 to investigate the veracity of the letter that purportedly came from the king.

The police swung into action, investigated the case and came out with an indictment of Princes Nonso, Richard Obiajulu and Ejimofor for forgery. And with the approval of Delta state Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Nonso and his co-travellers were subsequently charged before the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Asaba in a Suit No. SMC/420C/2016.

Although they were granted bail, it was revoked later as Prince Nonso Nwoko and his indicted gang failed to appear in court. They have since then remained fugitives from justice .

But they had also ruptured the peace of the Kingdom because the indictment did not make them sober. Instead they seemed determined to permanently fracture the unity of the hilly kingdom as desperation set in. Fast forward to 2017.

AND THE KING SUDDENLY DIES

On the morning of Monday, February 6, 2017, Idumuje-Ugboko kingdom froze in shock . The news filtered into homes and spread fast. Their king , Obi Albert Nwoko III had gone to join his forebears. The news came as a bruising bump. Many had seen the king the previous night. Though old and weak, he came out to greet his guests. And this morning, less than two hours before his death was announced, one of his aides had seen him. Said the Assistant who didn’t want to be named, ” I saw him around 7am before I left for my farm. He sat up , answered my greeting and wished me well before I left. So , you can imagine my shock when they called me to tell me he was dead. How ? How, I screamed. I rushed to the palace and went straight into his room as I was one of the very few people that could enter there”, the Assistant narrated. ” When I saw his body, he was looking very fresh. To tell you the truth I immediately suspected foul play. Because there had been tension. Prince Nonso was already acting like king in the palace and he was somebody the father did not approve his ways at all . And in fact, the way some of the people in the palace were making the so called death of the king a secret affair increased my suspicion “, he said.

A young Princess Chidinma Nwoko threw more light into the tragic scenario. ” My dad came out to eat that morning. Then he went back to the room. About 30 minutes later, my uncles, uncle Ejimofor and uncle Obiajulu Nwoko came into the palace “. According to Princess Chidinma, these two gentlemen who were close allies of her elder half-brother, Prince Nonso, went straight to see the king in his room. She continued, “about 45 minutes later, they came out and told me casually that my dad was dead. Even though I was young then, I felt so pained, I was like how, how possible, my dad, just like that ? No, it can’t be true. My world collapsed. I became hopeless.Honestly I felt like killing myself or killing those my uncles that minute because they just broke the news like one animal just died. It was painful”, she groaned. They had forced my mum out of the palace and they had also chased out my dad’s second wife. It was like I was now left alone in the midst of sharks. I cried till I broke down completely because I was hopeless. My senior brother, Nonso didn’t even look at me. I was like where do I go from here.

But thank God, I thank God because he sent us a helper, he sent me, my mum and my siblings a messiah during the worst crisis of our life. God sent us uncle Ned Nwoko. He had actually been doing everything for my dad including paying for his medical checkup and all that. But this time, he changed our lives forever “, she narrated now smiling as tears blurred her eyes during our video call interview.

Now, nobody seems to have a factual evidence about what killed a prominent king like Obi Nwoko III. Everything remains a conjecture. This naturally should have compelled the family to carry out an autopsy. But this was not done. This stark omission in addition to series of abhorrent acts that culminated in the internment of the king’s body the very day he died and the obnoxious news of Nonso installing himself king, barely an hour after his own father was buried made the wives of the Obi, Queen Faith Okwikwe Nwoko and Queen Ifeoma Nwoko to petition the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Zone 5, Benin, Abubakar Mohammed, now Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, to investigate the mysterious death of their husband.

Even some innocent villagers were now querying why Prince Nonso should be so desperate to crown himself king if indeed he was the rightful heir to the throne . Why would he brazenly violate the kingdom’s rites and rituals before burying a king.

More importantly, why would Prince Nonso go to court to stop to a laudable quest to get the police to unravel what killed his own father ? Shouldn’t he in good conscience join forces with his father’s wives to resolve the suspicious death of an eminent dad , they asked. Indeed , Nonso’s alleged many conflicts with his father from very early in his life and the detestable and alarming role he played immediately after the king’s death compelled the king’s queens, eminent Chiefs and people of the kingdom to start the current increasing cry and agitation for the body of the late king to be exhumed for an autopsy to be done.

ARE PRINCE NONSO’s HANDS CLEAN ?

Prince Nonso made himself a prime suspect in the alleged mysterious death of his father, the king ,when he buried the man the very day he died contrary to the dictates of their tradition which stipulates that the death of a king should be kept secret for three months before it is announced, with certain critical rituals performed. And if he could not be put in a mortuary then he should be buried after 24 hours.

As Prince Walters Eziashi, an Idumuje-Ugboko elite based in the village captured it, ” Prince Chukwunonso buried our king without recourse to the customs, tradition and culture of the Idumuje-Ugboko clan as embedded in the 1937 Intelligence Report of Idumuje Clan by R.B Karr”. But Nonso did not stop there. He buried the Obi accompanied only by Prince Fred Ejimofor Nwoko and Prince Richard Obiajulu Nwoko, two major suspects who visited the reportedly healthy king that morning only to come out to announce his death . A third person was Prince Mbanefo Nwoko, his brother. Nonso’s alleged despicable acts stretched further. He did not allow most of the brothers of the Obi like Princes Martin, Akaba and Somayina Nwoko to see the Obi’s prompting suspicion that the king’s body was tempered with. And Prince Walters threw more light into these brazen acts of abomination , this time in an alarming tone ” He did not only bury his father the same day he died, he did so accompanied by only his collaborators without the king’s five principal chiefs. He also appointed himself king within an hour of the purported burial forcing a 90 year old man from Atuma , another village entirely, one Mr Odinfono , to sit him on a chair he claimed was his traditional stool as king. This action is not only a taboo but an abomination not only in Idumuje clan but in the entire Anioma land “, he stressed.

The custom and tradition of the people according to Prince Walters is that ” when our king makes the ultimate transition, that is when he passes on, it is kept secret for three lunar months before it is announced and then the rituals for the burial would commence . But Prince Nonso didn’t care about this because of his personal ambition. He gave our king a secret burial the very day he died”. Said another man, ” Believe me my brother, that is the kind of act that brings unfathomable atrocities upon a people. Only God and our fore- fathers will judge Nonso and his cohorts for denigrating the throne of our Idumuje-Ugboko clan “, added the man who says he hails from the same village as the Odogwu of Idumuje-Ugboko. ” And if you know Nonso, if you engage him in a discussion for 15 minutes, just 15 minutes, you will know that something is already going wrong with him. But that is a matter for another day “, he enthused.

MORE CURIOUS REVELATIONS ABOUT NONSO’s ACTIONS.

Another palace Assistant, a man of about 51 recalled what he described as one of the most evil acts of the night the king died. According to him, the late king had a written note he described as a Traditional Will. The king he said told palace insiders that this note must be read before his interment. Once the Obi’s death was muted, Onwudinjo Nwobi, the mouth-piece of the king called ‘ Onu Obi’ demanded that the note be read. As revealed by this Assistant, the king stated in the note in clear terms why Nonso was not qualified and not fit to be king of Idumuje-Ugboko.

But having glimpsed the content of the note, Prince Obiajulu requested that if the letter must be read, then it should be read jointly but silently by everyone. In their native language, Obiajulu said ” ka anyi gu akwukwo-a na obi anyi”.

After this silent perusal of the content of the note, Prince Nonso shut down any further discussion of the note. And the king was hurriedly buried.

What however heightened the people’s worry about their Prince was his reaction to the police investigation of the king’s demise. The king’s wives had petitioned the police to investigate the mysterious death of their husband. The whole people of Idumuje-Ugboko applauded this quest seeing it as an audacious move. But shockingly, Prince Nonso and his allies went to the High Court in August 2017 to apply for the order of mandamus to stop the police investigation of their king’s death. And even in court they did everything and applied every tactic to frustrate and delay the court process and by extension the police investigation. “Our people were dumbfounded by Nonso’s action. We felt ashamed of ourselves, we felt like outcasts when we visited neighbouring villages”, said Peter, a man from Ogbe-Ofu, one of the four federating villages.

It was not until June 3, 2019, two whole years later, that the application which ordinarily shouldn’t last for more than three months was stuck out by Justice C.N Ogadi of High Court, Agbor, Delta state who got fed up with their rascality and antics.

Now, the police has unfettered opportunity to continue their investigation, a popular mission to resolve all issues surrounding the death of HRM Obi Albert Nwoko III.

Last week, the Queens of the late king vowed to return to the police to urge them to re-open the investigation. There is now hope for the Idumuje clan. And there is anxiety and fear in some quarters . Importantly, there are nagging questions begging for answers .

Why did the king, Obi Nwoko III state that his own son is not qualified and not fit to be king ? Why does Nonso seem desperate to be king ? What is his grouse with his billionaire philanthropic cousin , Prince Ned Nwoko , a soft spoken lawyer celebrated not only in Idumuje-Ugboko but nationwide, across tribes and religions in Nigeria for his unquenchable thirst for charity and philanthropy ? These questions are begging for answers.

Jubilation As Oba Of Benin Welcomes First Prince As Monarch

21 Storey Smart Complex – A’IBOM IS SET FOR WORLD BUSINESSES – By Grace Akpan

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t is a cynosure of all eyes, the tallest architectural masterpiece in the South/South region of Nigeria, the most ICT compliant intelligence structure, the 21 storey smart office complex, located in the central business district of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, set to host any known corporate organization or world class company in the Nigeria Oil and Gas industry.

With the Tower as high as 108.8 meters, the 21 storey Five Star business accommodation occupies a construction area of 18, 639.50 meters square on a massive site area of 48,200.00 meters square, making room for a 500 capacity car park.

The visionary Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, burning with the desire to attract huge volumes of Foreign Direct Investments, FDI, to Akwa Ibom and catapult the state into an investment hub of Nigeria, undertook the 21 storey building, a flagship of his government, as a major catalyst in his envisioned economic renaissance.

For years, Akwa Ibom suffered from dearth of international standard office accommodations for world class corporate organizations as well as International Oil Companies, IOCs, some of which operate in the state but with operational base and headquarters in other cities, a situation which deprived the state of huge internally generated revenues, IGR.

As a leader committed to the overall development of the state in all sectors, Governor Emmanuel saw the turn-key high rise office building as a bait for the oil companies which hitherto laid claims to lack of suitable business accommodations as the major hindrance to the relocation of their headquarters and operational base to Akwa Ibom State.

This much may have accounted to the near lack of presence of any substantial Federal establishment in the oil and gas sector in Akwa Ibom State since creation over 33 years ago. As the hen that lays the golden egg, Akwa Ibom, the largest oil producing state in Nigeria contributing large chunk of revenue to the Federation account from its crude oil, could not boast of a single oil depot, an office of the Directorate of Petroleum Resources, DPR or the head office of any of the oil companies exploiting the State’s rich oil reserves.

Coming with all the attractions and safety mechanism expected of a smart building anywhere in the world, the 21 storey building is a dream come true in the sustainable infrastructural drive of the Governor Udom Emmanuel administration. The project which kicked off on 17th January, 2018 with a two year work term is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, precisely on 17th December, 2020.

The Mega project handled by a Turkish construction company, VKS, is a magical architectural design on land, the first of its kind in Nigeria which ongoing work is providing direct and indirect job opportunities to the people of Akwa Ibom State and which on completion will not only generate employment – skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled, to the teeming youths of the state but will contribute to the area development as well as house oil and gas companies and serve as a ready haven for investors.

The Tower which has added aesthetics to the landscape of Akwa Ibom will run with 24 hours power supply and contains all necessary facilities and equipment of a smart building including: 4 elevators, 2 emergency exit, fire protection sensors and aviation wing. The ground floor is designed to accommodate banks and canteens while the mechanical floor controls sewage and takes care of waste disposal.

From the second to the twentieth floor seamless office accommodations are provided to end – users while the twenty-one floor is a terrace where guests, tourists and investors can stand to have a glimpse of the beautiful landscape of the capital city.

It is worthy of mention that, the smart building has an access control with such components like, the card reader, biometric control keypads, central stand-alone server workstation, electric lock hardware cabling for doors, boom barrier for cars, automated cards, automated turnstiles, fire protected doors and time attendance readers.

For the fire system, the tower boasts of: fire electric pumps, diesel pump backup, Fire extinguisher hose real, technical rooms E30 cabling for S90 fire, protection sprinkler system, intelligent smoke detectors and fire alarm panel connected to the CCTV room. The state-of-the-art communication gadgets of the intelligence building are in place with all accessories of a public address system including: speaker, combine audio+media via sms for evacuation, control station, UPS and amplifiers.

Other unique features of the super imposing edifice are the Led lighting, Touchscreen control KNX occupancy and motion sensors, Digitally addressed lighting interface(DALI), network switch for outdoor lighting motion sensor, Solar fitted nano type facade panel to power facade light at night as well as Perimeter fence light.

Quite expected of a Five Star business environment, the 21 storey smart building makes room for video conferencing, thus putting in place necessary cameras and efficiently managed workstation. With a chiller system of chilled water sensor, infrared toilet system, automated facade sprinklers and cleaner and automated Rain gage.

With Humidity and temperature sensors in all the floors, the smart office complex stamps out itself as truly an intelligence building with no comparison in the south/south region of Nigeria.

Already, Governor Udom Emmanuel has put up Akwa Ibom as first among equal in all sectors such as, Agriculture, Aviation, Healthcare, Education, Human capital development, Power, entrepreneural development and even in the current fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

It is notable that with the very friendly government policies, so many investors have been attracted to Akwa Ibom while some others such as ExxonMobil and Black Rhino have gone ahead to register their intent to share in the opulence of the 21 storey commercial business accommodation.

And so, with a peaceful environment, coupled with warm and friendly people, rich cultural heritage, internationaly acclaimed cuisines, abundant natural endowments and resources, mega projects, including the 21 storey smart building, it can only be concluded that, Akwa Ibom is ready and set to host world businesses.
