She’s the pillar who makes the family so strong, love so true, joy so real, faith so firm and fear so ordinary. She is the embodiment of cerebral articulation, the epitome of intellection and breathtaking simplicity, the personification of undiluted humanness, the perfect example of leadership symbolism, the paragon of idealism, the soul humanity, the mirror of beauty , the amazon.

Precious Erugo is one of those very few good girl; a true woman, a woman of valour, the bringer of rain. In the gallery of great leaders and great women, she is without doubt, a rare masterpiece.
The whole world will be celebrating Precious Erugo  today  to mark her birthday and to put the epochal celebration in proper perspective, she added another year to her age today at the exciting peak and the proper prime of her mercurial powers where, poised like the bronzed champion, glowing flamboyantly in the golden flame of her decade, prepares herself to capture and conquer arguably, the one ultimate laurel for which her superlative gifts and brilliance clamour to be manifestly celebrated with maximum educational aplomb woven into the matrix of an intrepid homogeneous ubiquity.

“While her transition has left a void too difficult to fill, we urge the family to be unwavering in advancing her ideals and take solace in the truism that her memory will always be a blessing.

Full speech delivered to Nigerians by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday July 31, 2023

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]EXT OF THE NATIONAL BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT BOLA TINUBU TO NIGERIANS ON CURRENT ECONOMIC CHALLENGES.

AFTER DARKNESS COMES THE GLORIOUS DAWN

My fellow citizens,

I want to talk to you about our economy. It is important that you understand the reasons for the policy measures I have taken to combat the serious economic challenges this nation has long faced.

2. I am not going to talk in difficult terms by dwelling on economic jargon and concepts. I will speak in plain, clear language so that you know where I stand. More importantly, so that you see and hopefully will share my vision regarding the journey to a better, more productive economy for our beloved country.

3. For several years, I have consistently maintained the position that the fuel subsidy had to go. This once beneficial measure had outlived its usefulness. The subsidy cost us trillions of Naira yearly. Such a vast sum of money would have been better spent on public transportation, healthcare, schools, housing and even national security. Instead, it was being funnelled into the deep pockets and lavish bank accounts of a select group of individuals.

4. This group had amassed so much wealth and power that they became a serious threat to the fairness of our economy and the integrity of our democratic governance. To be blunt, Nigeria could never become the society it was intended to be as long as such small, powerful yet unelected groups hold enormous influence over our political economy and the institutions that govern it.

5. The whims of the few should never hold dominant sway over the hopes and aspirations of the many. If we are to be a democracy, the people and not the power of money must be sovereign.

6. The preceding administration saw this looming danger as well. Indeed, it made no provision in the 2023 Appropriations for subsidy after June this year. Removal of this once helpful device that had transformed into a millstone around the country’s neck had become inevitable.

7. Also, the multiple exchange rate system that had been established became nothing but a highway of currency speculation. It diverted money that should have been used to create jobs, build factories and businesses for millions of people. Our national wealth was doled on favourable terms to a handful of people who have been made filthy rich simply by moving money from one hand to another. This too was extremely unfair.

8. It also compounded the threat that the illicit and mass accumulation of money posed to the future of our democratic system and its economy.

9. I had promised to reform the economy for the long-term good by fighting the major imbalances that had plagued our economy. Ending the subsidy and the preferential exchange rate system were key to this fight. This fight is to define the fate and future of our nation. Much is in the balance.

10. Thus, the defects in our economy immensely profited a tiny elite, the elite of the elite you might call them. As we moved to fight the flaws in the economy, the people who grow rich from them, predictably, will fight back through every means necessary.

11. Our economy is going through a tough patch and you are being hurt by it. The cost of fuel has gone up. Food and other prices have followed it. Households and businesses struggle. Things seem anxious and uncertain. I understand the hardship you face. I wish there were other ways. But there is not. If there were, I would have taken that route as I came here to help not hurt the people and nation that I love.

12. What I can offer in the immediate is to reduce the burden our current economic situation has imposed on all of us, most especially on businesses, the working class and the most vulnerable among us.

13. Already, the Federal Government is working closely with states and local governments to implement interventions that will cushion the pains of our people across socio-economic brackets.

14. Earlier this month, I signed four (4) Executive Orders in keeping with my electoral promise to address unfriendly fiscal policies and multiple taxes that are stifling the business environment. These Executive Orders on suspension and deferred commencement of some taxes will provide the necessary buffers and headroom to businesses in the manufacturing sector to continue to thrive and expand.

15. To strengthen the manufacturing sector, increase its capacity to expand and create good-paying jobs, we are going to spend N75 billion between July 2023 and March 2024. Our objective is to fund 75 enterprises with great potential to kick-start a sustainable economic growth, accelerate structural transformation and improve productivity. Each of the 75 manufacturing enterprises will be able to access N1 Billion credit at 9% per annum with maximum of 60 months repayment for long-term loans and 12 months for working capital.

16. Our administration recognises the importance of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and the informal sector as drivers of growth. We are going to energise this very important sector with N125 billion.

17. Out of the sum, we will spend N50 billion on Conditional Grant to 1 million nano businesses between now and March 2024. Our target is to give N50,000 each to 1,300 nano business owners in each of the 774 local governments across the country.

18. Ultimately, this programme will further drive financial inclusion by onboarding beneficiaries into the formal banking system. In like manner, we will fund 100,000 MSMEs and start-ups with N75 billion. Under this scheme, each enterprise promoter will be able to get between N500,000 to N1million at 9% interest per annum and a repayment period of 36 months.

19. To further ensure that prices of food items remain affordable, we have had a multi-stakeholder engagement with various farmers’ associations and operators within the agricultural value chain.

20. In the short and immediate terms, we will ensure staple foods are available and affordable. To this end, I have ordered the release of 200,000 Metric Tonnes of grains from strategic reserves to households across the 36 states and FCT to moderate prices. We are also providing 225,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer, seedlings and other inputs to farmers who are committed to our food security agenda.

21. Our plan to support cultivation of 500,000 hectares of farmland and all-year-round farming practice remains on course. To be specific, N200 billion out of the N500 billion approved by the National Assembly will be disbursed as follows:

-Our administration will invest N50 billion each to cultivate 150,000 hectares of rice and maize.

-N50 billion each will also be earmarked to cultivate 100,000 hectares of wheat and cassava.

22. This expansive agricultural programme will be implemented targeting small-holder farmers and leveraging large-scale private sector players in the agric business with strong performance record.

23. In this regard, the expertise of Development Finance Institutions, commercial banks and microfinance banks will be tapped into to develop a viable and an appropriate transaction structure for all stakeholders.

24. Fellow Nigerians, I made a solemn pledge to work for you. How to improve your welfare and living condition is of paramount importance to me and it’s the only thing that keeps me up day and night.

25. It is in the light of this that I approved the Infrastructure Support Fund for the States. This new Infrastructure Fund will enable States to intervene and invest in critical areas and bring relief to many of the pain points as well as revamp our decaying healthcare and educational Infrastructure.

26. The fund will also bring improvements to rural access roads to ease evacuation of farm produce to markets. With the fund, our states will become more competitive and on a stronger financial footing to deliver economic prosperity to Nigerians.

27. Part of our programme is to roll out buses across the states and local governments for mass transit at a much more affordable rate. We have made provision to invest N100 billion between now and March 2024 to acquire 3000 units of 20-seater CNG-fuelled buses.

28. These buses will be shared to major transportation companies in the states, using the intensity of travel per capital. Participating transport companies will be able to access credit under this facility at 9% per annum with 60 months repayment period.

29. In the same vein, we are also working in collaboration with the Labour unions to introduce a new national minimum wage for workers. I want to tell our workers this: your salary review is coming.

30. Once we agree on the new minimum wage and general upward review, we will make budget provision for it for immediate implementation.

31. I want to use this opportunity to salute many private employers in the Organised Private Sector who have already implemented general salary review for employees.

32. Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard on us and there is no doubt about it that it is tough on us. But I urge you all to look beyond the present temporary pains and aim at the larger picture. All of our good and helpful plans are in the works. More importantly, I know that they will work.

33. Sadly, there was an unavoidable lag between subsidy removal and these plans coming fully online. However, we are swiftly closing the time gap. I plead with you to please have faith in our ability to deliver and in our concern for your well-being.

34. We will get out of this turbulence. And, due to the measures we have taken, Nigeria will be better equipped and able to take advantage of the future that awaits her.

35. In a little over two months, we have saved over a trillion Naira that would have been squandered on the unproductive fuel subsidy which only benefitted smugglers and fraudsters. That money will now be used more directly and more beneficially for you and your families.

36. For example, we shall fulfill our promise to make education more affordable to all and provide loans to higher education students who may need them. No Nigerian student will have to abandon his or her education because of lack of money.

37. Our commitment is to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of our people. On this principle, we shall never falter.

38. We are also monitoring the effects of the exchange rate and inflation on gasoline prices. If and when necessary, we will intervene.

39. I assure you my fellow countrymen and women that we are exiting the darkness to enter a new and glorious dawn.

40. Now, I must get back to work in order to make this vision come true.

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]eaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party met in Abuja on Saturday to deliberate on a wide range of issues, particularly the inclusion of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, on the ministerial list transmitted to the Senate last week by President Bola Tinubu.

The closed door meeting which took place at the Maitama residence of former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tom Ikimi, attracted prominent party members, including the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, among others.

Atiku had taken to his official Twitter handle atiku on Saturday evening to disclose the event, saying, “Earlier today, I joined other leaders and stakeholders of our great party, the PDP at a meeting in Abuja. The meeting was ripe with productive discourse and collaborative energy.”

Although, Special Adviser to Atiku on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu, played down the importance of the meeting, saying, “It was not about what people are thinking. Oga (Atiku) in his usual manner, gathered party leaders to thank them for their support during the presidential election,” a party source added that the fate of Wike may be determined on Monday at the National Working Committee meeting billed to hold at the national secretariat of the PDP.

He said, “The NWC meeting will take place on Monday. As soon as Wike’s name was confirmed on the ministerial list, party leaders at various levels have been discussing the issue. You know that there have been speculations about this for quite a while now. This was mentioned at the meeting too.

“It is very likely that Wike will not decline to serve and what would that mean to the party? The picture will be clearer on Monday.”

Surprisingly, suspended National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, who had a tough battle with Wike, attended the meeting, having stayed away from its activities since he was suspended by his Igyorov ward, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has opened up on the vast amount of money that have been siphoned by a selected but unelected group of Nigerians going home with fat pockets and bank accounts.

The president made the shocking revelation on Monday July 2023, while addressing Nigerians during a nationwide broadcast.

He insisted that the money lost to fuel subsidy theft would have improved the living standard of all Nigerians if channeled into various sectors of the economy.

Tribunal sacks LP lawmaker, declares Elumelu winner

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he election of Mr. Ngozi Okolie of Labour Party as member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of Delta State in the House of Representatives was on Monday nullified by the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba, Delta State.

In about 107-page judgement that lasted over five hours, the three-member tribunal headed by Justice A.Z. Mussa, disqualified Okolie and consequently declared the runner up in the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election, Ndudi Elumelu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as winner.

Elumelu, who is the immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, had in petition number EPT/DL/HR/06/2023, approached the tribunal, seeking to disqualify Okolie on the grounds that he was not properly sponsored by the Labour Party and that he did not resign his position as a public office holder.

The tribunal agreed with the petitioners that the Second Respondent (Okolie) was not duly sponsored by the Third Respondent (Labour Party) as he was not a member of the party as at May 28, 2022 when the LP primary purportedly held.

The tribunal also resolved in favour of the petitioners that the Second Respondent did not resign from public office to contest the elections which is in violation of the provision of the law.

In an interview with newsmen the Petitioners’ Counsel, Andrew Osememedua Odum, SAN, described the judgement as “a correct exposition of jurisprudence and the law.”

“We also proved and the tribunal agreed with us that there was no primaries, there was no sponsorship, the Labour Party did not conduct any primaries for the National Assembly election.

“Sections 65 and 66 of the Constitution require that for a person to be qualified to contest election into the House of Representatives, he must belong to a political party and must be sponsored by that political party. In this instance, Okolie, the tribunal found was not duly sponsored by the Labour Party because there was no primaries.

“On the second ground, the tribunal also found in our favour that Okolie was in public office, he did not resign, he continued to collect salaries and emoluments in breach of the law.

“So, for these two reasons his election was nullified and in line with Section 135 of the Electoral Act, Hon. Elumelu who was the first runner up was declared winner of that election,” he added.

Reacting, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu commended the Judiciary for the courage in upholding justice and described the judgement as victory for democracy, Rule of law and the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal.

He maintained that the judgment has further reaffirmed that the judiciary is the last hope for the common man who feels aggrieved and followed due judicial process of asking for redress.

Elumelu appreciated the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, the Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and the wife, the immediate past Governor of the State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, who he noted set the ground running and supported him immensely.

He also appreciated the former Vice-president and Presidential candidate of the PDP in the last Presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, his supporters as well as the media for their roles in the quest for justice on the matter.

The immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, also commended Ngozi Lawrence Okolie for the way he comported himself throughout the period of the sitting of the tribunal and urged Okolie to join hands with him to move the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency forward.

Chief Nkem Okwuofu in her reaction also commended the Judgment of the tribunal and described it as an act of God. Others who reacted to the Judgment included, Chief Chris Agbabu, Chief Patrick Ukah, Hon. Chikazia, Chief Edwin Uzor, Chief Emma Chinye, Chief Dada Okonji and Mr. Olise Ifeajika.

They all congratulated Elumelu for the victory at the Tribunal and called on the people of Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency to remain steadfast in rallying round Hon Elumelu as he continue with his effective representation in the House of Representatives

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi arrives Delta to a tumultuous welcome

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]istinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi(SPON) arrived Delta State to a tumultuous welcome by supporters and well wishers from across party line. This was his first visit to the state after his incarceration and illegal imprisonment by Appeal Court for twelve months and six days. The Senator was received by huge crowd of supporters, relations and other stakeholders in the state beyond party boundary.

Grassroots Publishers online gathered that Senator Peter Onyelukachukwu Nwaoboshi touched down at the Asaba International Airport, Delta State, at 1.30pm and he was accompanied by two serving APC Senators from Delta State, Senator Joel Onowakpo and Senator Ede Dafinone . The Senator had to complete the journey home on road to his town Ibusa.
The home coming was the first in the past one year that Senator Nwaoboshi regained his freedom after he was released from the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, on the order of the Supreme court.

It was gathered that the leadership of Anioma, leaders of different social-cultural groups and thousands of supporters converged at the airport to receive the Distinguished Senator on arrival.

The Senator had in a brief media interaction, expressed his joy to be home again and condemned his incarceration and illegal imprisonment by Appeal Court for twelve months and six days. Recall that in July 2022, He was sentenced to 7 years in prison after he was illegally convicted by the Appeal Court in Lagos, but the Supreme court on July 7, 2023, then nullified his conviction on grounds of illegality.

The Supreme Court’s judgment acquitting Senator Peter Nwaoboshi of money laundering and fraud charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s shows why the anti-graft agency ought to be reformed and disband.

Senator Nwaoboshi as a man of coat of many colours just like the biblical Joseph, After Joseph regained his freedom from prison, he became Prime Minister in a foreign land. Similar kismet was also meted on SPON, and he came out triumphantly.

Some people saw tomorrow and raised the dust of unbending enmity and got Distinguished Senator Nwaoboshi incarcerated but God as a chain breaker broke the prison gate and set his anointed free by giving him a resounding victory at the Supreme Court, as justice delayed was never a justice denied in his case.

And it became obvious to the blind and audible enough to the deaf that the sheer persecution of Nwaoboshi is a disingenuous enterprise to depreciate his lofty political capital ahead of the much dreaded 2023 Senatorial election.it is quite unfortunate that Delta North sons were involved in the incarceration and illegal imprisonment of an illustrious Anioma son.
Nwaoboshi ’s convoy went through Asaba, Delta State capital, amidst cheers from residents on his way to Ibusa, his hometown. “So today, after the much-failed efforts made to curse a man whom God has already blessed, that man has come to take his rightful place as our leader. He’s the APC leader in the Delta North; he’s Delta North political leader no matter the party you belong and he’s the man who everybody gives the respect as Anioma original leader”,
Now that the battle line is drawn and with his proficient wealth of experience, Nwaoboshi has the administrative paraphernalia and wherewithal to reclaim back his mandate soon. He was received warmly by his family, friends, brothers and sisters backed by his political associates from APC,PDP,Accord Party,Labour Party and others

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ge may be a number but life is certainly a battle. And if the life is that of the urbane and personable , Hon. Leo Nneaka, then life is not only a battle–it is a full blown war. Ever since he adorned himself as a soldier for good, he has had no reprieve from the unrelenting forces of evil. He is caught in the vortex of the eternal battle between good and evil.
Indeed, to those who know him up close and personal, Leo is an enigma: humble, self-effacing, industrious, practical, efficient by nature, diligent, always thinking about things he needs to accomplish or how to get ahead on his next assignment, a complete Cancer, if you care to assess him by his Zodiac sign. But in plain terms, he is a case of a man who set out to always make a difference wherever he found himself. Not the kind of difference other men pursue to grandstand, but the type that impacts humanity and makes life easier for people. And of this, his track record is unassailable. A look back at his trajectory gives a chronicle of exemplary service to his community and a profile of pure patriotism from an individual.

Fuel Price Hike: NLC REJECTS TINIBU’S N8,000 FOR POOR FAMILIES, OTHER PALLIATIVES; PULLS OUT OF COMMITTES

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has categorically rejected the recently proposed palliatives package, including the provision of N8, 000 (eight thousand naira only) to 12 million poor households across the country for a period of six months and also resolved to pull out of the various committees on fuel subsidy palliatives, even as it has equally vowed to resist any further increase of the product.

This strong position, coming in the wake of another astronomical spike in the petrol pump price which has rising to over N600, as at today, was contained in a Release signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero and titled: ‘THE PROPOSED PALLIATIVES, CASH TRANSFERS, ROBS THE POOR AND PAYS THE RICH: WE REJECT IT, in which the Labour movement insists that it has restrained itself and allowed it’s members to be in some palliatives committees, to avoid any misinterpretation from the new government in power, but it appears workers patience are being taken for granted.

The NLC Statement, which describes the new regime of pump price of fuel announced by the NNPC, as provocative and designed to worsen the poverty level and hardship Nigeria are passing through, further added that since June 19, 2023, when it was agreed to set up committees with a National Steering Committee, government is yet to make any move to inaugurate the committees, but news flying around of further hike in pump price.

The NLC warns that the current government must watch clearly and observe that the impunity displayed by the immediate past government, is not allowed to rare its ugly head, and that the workers are fully ready to stop any anti-people policy.On the proposed N8000 palliatives to 12 million families, the Labour movement says it stands rejected as it is another charade of the Nigerian ruling class to deceive the poor masses.

Labour argues that it does not have confidence on how the data of the 12 million poor family was arrived at, calling on Nigerians to reject it as it is most likely to go the way of the homegrown school feeding programme and the covid-19 palliative, which were more or less conduit pipes for corruption.

The Press statement reads in part:

“We woke up this morning (Tuesday) to the news that NNPCL has increased the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the hitherto draconian N587/liter to N617/litre.

“This is despite the suffering and hardship that Nigerians have had to go through as a result of the original hike on May 29, as part of President Tinubu’s inaugural gift to Nigerians.

“An 18 percent increase in the price of fuel at this time of great difficulties for our people is sadistic and totally unacceptable.

“The NLC considers this most insensitive and horrendous and smirks of a triumphalism by this government against the masses of this country.

“It looks like a feeling by those in government that the people have become a conquered people that they can treat anyhow they like without repercussions and this demonstrates why it has taken pleasure in inflicting more and more pains and sorrow on the people.

“We strongly condemn this latest unilateral increase and warn the government to desist from trying the patience of Nigerians.

“What the government has done is capable of pushing Nigerian people to the edge of the precipice and can trigger a raging fire that may overwhelm whatsoever mechanisms the government thinks it has put in place as safeguards.”

Reps Rejects Motion To Stop Petrol Price Increase

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he House of Representatives has rejected a motion seeking to stop the increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). overlay-cleverThe motion was shutdown at Plenary on Wednesday after a member, Ugochinyere Ikenga raised the motion.

The motion was titled “The need to investigate the incessant increase in fuel pump price since the removal of petrol subsidy.”

Recall that on Wednesday, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited reviewed its petrol pump price to N617.

This is coming months after the NNPCL directed its outlets nationwide to sell fuel between N480 and N570 per litre, an almost 200 per cent increase from the initial price below N200. prices which are different across the states of the Federation.

But the review on Wednesday was questioned by Ikenga, who alleged that the increase had become incessant and needed to be investigated.

He said, “Mr Speaker, this is the people’s house and we represent the Nigeria people, very soon with the way things are going fuel will be sold for 1,000 per litre.”

But members of the house voted against the amendment after Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary questioned if it was in the place of the House to take such a position since pump price is controlled by the market forces.

However, the house resolved to carry out an investigation to ascertain the veracity of the increases.
