Community Publishers frowns at meters adjusting by Petroleum dealers to defraud customers in Delta State

Community Newspaper Publishers in Delta State has frowned at the practice of some petrol stations     adjusting their meters to shortchange customers, saying that Government should look into the act and sanction the culprits. This   sharp practices in the downstream sector of the  Nigerian  petroleum industry have continued  to have a heavy toll on end users as many  fillings stations selling Premium Motor Spirit also known as  petrol  in the country have resorted to under-dispensing of the product.

The Community Newspaper Publishers on Friday warned that it will soon release the names of the petrol stations to the downstream sector regulatory body of the  Nigerian  petroleum industry to shut down petrol stations that are manipulating their meters to exploit motorists and other consumers of the product.

The Community Newspapers described as criminal the act of petroleum dealers in the state for exploiting consumers through deliberate manipulation of meters while dispensing fuel inaccurately, insisting that such sharp practices would no longer be allowed to thrive in the state.

While urging the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria to ensure that filling stations comply with accurate metering system, the government assured residents of its genuine concern for their plight in the hands of the exploiters.

The Community Newspapers with over thirty(30) members gave the warning during an unscheduled visit to some petrol stations in the Asaba, Ibusa, Kwale, Agbor and Warri metropolis to ascertain the alleged meter manipulation by filling station owners.

In all the stations visited, it was observed that majority of the stations had no accurate metering system, including the major distributing stations had the worset metering system.

while addressing journalists shortly after their investigation, the State Chairman of ACNPN, Comrade Jude Obiemenyeogo, said that the Community Newspapers had been inundated with complaints from residents and motorists operating in the state that they were being shortchanged at petrol stations even with the high cost of the product, adding it informed the decision to visit stations for confirmation.

Community Newspapers lamented the insensitivity of the dealers who under-supplied the product purchased by consumers, saying the days of such manipulation would soon come to an end as severe measures were being taken by the appropriate authorities against erring dealers. Nigeria’s petroleum regulator, Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR,saddled with the responsibility of regulating, monitoring  and enforcing the  laws in the sector, used the Seraphin Can to expose filling stations involved in the nefarious act in Delta State recently.
