The STAND-UP Campaign Team has officially declared its intention to contest the 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council elections scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026, with a pledge to stabilize, serve, elevate and enrich the Union, and not the team.
The team, led by veteran journalist and public relations practitioner, Comrade Kenneth Onojomena Obieh, as its Chairmanship candidate, Comrade Patrick Ochie as Vice Chairman, Comrade Felix Ekwu as Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior as Assistant Secretary, Comrade Caroline Ubini as Treasurer (Unopposed) and Comrade Michael Ilaya as Auditor (Unopposed) made its declaration in Asaba, today, saying the Council is at a defining moment that requires clear leadership, roadmap, structured systems and bold ideas of economic and infrastructural development.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Comrade Obieh said their mandate is to restore unity of purpose across the State Working Committee, State Executive Council and all Chapels for a stronger, more united and respected Council.
“For us, this is not about a title. It is about sacrifice for a union we all cherish. If you don’t stand up for something, we will fall for anything. Never will Delta NUJ sit or stand aloof. We will STAND-UP for what is right and just, and practice it”, the team declared.
The team said its aspiration is anchored on a proactive, productive and intentional leadership philosophy, with a comprehensive blueprint designed to address the critical needs of journalists and reposition the Council for greater effectiveness.
According to the team, the agenda provides a clear framework for strengthening the Union, improving members’ welfare, promoting professional development, deepening accountability and transparency, fostering unity, and ensuring that journalists across the state have a stronger voice in the affairs of their Union.
The team further pledged to pursue an inclusive and service-driven administration that will place the interests of members at the centre of its programmes, while promoting professionalism and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.
It said the proposed leadership would also prioritize capacity building, welfare, institutional development and initiatives capable of enhancing the professional and socio-economic well-being of journalists.
The STAND-UP team parades a blend of experience across Council and Chapel levels.
Already, Comrade Caroline Ubini (Treasurer) has emerged unopposed, as well as Comrade Michael Ilaya (Auditor), which means that a better life for practicing Journalists in the state has commenced.
The team assured members of an all-inclusive administration that will listen, serve and deliver if given the mandate, adding that its collective aspiration is to build a stronger, more united and professionally driven Delta NUJ.
