CHRISTIANS ARE RELATED NOT BY BLOOD BUT BY FAITH AND OBEDIENCE – Fr. Norbert Uchuno

TUESDAY JANUARY 23, 2024
TUESDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
2 Samuel 6: 12b-15. 17-19
Mark 3:31-35

CHRISTIANS ARE RELATED NOT BY BLOOD BUT BY FAITH AND OBEDIENCE

Jesus compliments his mother in today’s gospel when the crowds around him informed him that his mother and brethren were outside waiting to see him. He answers them, that his mother, brothers and sisters are those who do the will of God.

From the records, Mary was on the top list of those who carried out the will of God. It seems as if Jesus was telling them, look beyond the biological relationship with my mother, but look more on the spiritual and her tie with God the Father. For by faith and obedience has my mother won her title of motherhood over me. She answered the call of the angel Gabriel, she attended to the request of God, she accepted and followed the will of God for her life.

And she is also supporting me and will never allow me to deviate from accomplishing the will of my Father in heaven. So that the fear that he was being in danger against the Pharisees and the leading religious people of his time who sought his life and were setting traps for him and of which these brethren has brought the mother to see and talk with him or even if possible take back to Nazareth will not eventually materialize since he was only carrying out the will of God his Father for his life.

Jesus therefore instructs us to understand that the Christian faith and life is much more tied to faith and obedience of faith than to any biological relationship. His mother even thought they are biologically related but are more closely related and associated in faith and obedience to God by doing the will of God.

In the same way, anyone who desires to be close to him and to God will be that only and if the person obeys the will of God and suppresses his human desires and aspiration by keeping to the will of God, accepting the ordinances of God and carrying out the will of God.

Faith and obedience to God’s will also makes us brothers and sisters to one another. The waters of baptism and the spirit of Sonship in Christ is attained when we believe, trust and love God with all our hearts, wills and mind and our strength. It is not gained by blood relationship or bought by money, or through any other means.

Let us braze up our faith, be prompt in obedience to the dictates of the word of God and strive to keep God’s love and commandment as he talks to us daily in the liturgy, in the scriptures and in our daily interactions with people.

Let us also maintain our faith community by sharing our lives, cooperating with the faith community to propagate the faith the more through our active service, moral and financial support and above all through our attendance at all liturgical celebrations, including seminars, retreats and conferences organized by our faith communities to promote the will of God and the command of God in our lives.

Heavenly Father, we desire to do your will. Grant us the strength to overcome our human challenges and weaknesses. May our desire translate into concrete actions of courageously upholding your commandments and wills, by loving as you desire and living life of virtues. May we build up this relationship of faith and obedience in our parish and faith communities as we daily witness to the gospel through Jesus Christ our Lord

Tackle corruption, insecurity, bad leadership with your full chest – US based Nigerian lawyer tells Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] renowned property development expert with diverse business interests in Nigeria and the United States of America, Dr Chris Okobah has tasked the federal government to adopt a holistic approach in tackling the issues of corruption, Insecurity, bad leadership and Institutional failure at all levels of governance in Nigeria.

According to him, tackling corruption holistically will enable the country achieve sustainable economic growth, political stability and accelerated development in the foreseeable future.

Dr. Okobah gave the charge while reflecting on the state of the nation during an interactive session with journalists.

Dr. Okobah who is a lawyer said Nigeria was in dire straits economically, underscoring the urgent need for government to re- examine its economic polices and programs for the attainment of economic stability and shore up the value of the Naira.

The public affairs commentator criticized the judiciary for its incursion into the country’s political and democracy space particularly in pronouncing winners of electoral contests saying that the power to decide who governs the people rested squarely on the electorate and not the judiciary.

He stated that a situation where three or four persons (judges) will seat and make judicial pronouncements on the outcome of elections was antithetical to the growth of democracy and could erode the confidence of the electorate in the electoral process.

He advocated for electoral reforms to make it constitutionally mandatory for the electoral body to electronically transmit election results to IREV insisting that the appointment of INEC chairman and commissioners should not be left entirely to the executive arm of government.

Rather, he posited that a body should be constituted to screen and interrogate the credentials of nominees for the position of chairman and federal commisioners to avoid appointing individuals with partisan interests and party affiliations.

Alluding to the abysmal performance of INEC in the 2023 general elections, Dr Okobah insisted that only persons who are above board with impeccable character and high pedigree as well sound knowledge of the historical political evolution of Nigeria should be appointed into the electoral body.

On security, he admonished the federal government to rejig the nations security architecture saying that the present security arrangement had failed woefully to achieve the desired objective of securing the lives and property of Nigerians.

According to him, security in developed countries is intelligence driven and enjoined security chiefs to live up to their responsibility of fashioning out enduring and full proof security architecture that could stand the test of time.

COMRADE ASIODU SEEKS OBOREVWORI’S INTERVENTION IN LAND GRABBING

Comrade Ifeanyi Asiodu
President, General of the Ibusa Community Youth Association

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he President General of the Ibusa Community Youth Association, Comrade Ifeanyi Asiodu, has blamed the prevailing security challenge in the community on the activities of land grabbers parading themselves as donees of Power of Attorney.

Comrade Asiodu, who bared his mind on the issue while speaking with newsmen in Asaba, said the impunity with which some of the donees went about their illegal land deals was worrisome and needed to be checked to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

The Youth Leader, who is also the Alum of Ibusa, noted with dismay the flagrant disrespect for Court Orders by the donees concerned and the unwarranted protection being given to them by the police.

The PG, who had fallen victim of land grabbing, narrated how he bought some plots of land last year at different locations in Umuisaba village, Ibusa, some with C of O and fenced them out, only for the Diokpa of the village to donate the Power of Attorney to a prominent son of the community who allegedly mobilized thugs to bring down the fences and property in the lands and started selling to a Real Estate developer.

Comrade Asiodu, who is also a community leader, wondered why the police should allow themselves to be used to oppress, intimidate and illegally acquire people’s lands, saying that the donee of the Umuisaba Power of Attorney had always boasted that no one had the power to stop him.

He said he had chosen to pursue his case in Court, believing that some day he would get justice, even as he revealed that over 200 plots of land he genuinely acquired had been illegally sold and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

The Ibusa Youth PG commended the efforts of the Oshimili North local government at checking land grabbing, especially in Ibusa and Okpanam, but called for strict enforcement of the by-law prohibiting illegal land sales and grabbing.

Comrade Asiodu also appealed to the State Governor, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and the relevant authorities to intervene in the matter, insisting that no individual should be seen to be above the law.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, denied any police romance with land grabbers in Ibusa and indeed any part of the state, urging anyone with a proof to come forward with it.

The Chairman of the Board, Hon Emma Chinye, who stated this in a chat with this medium in Asaba, noted that though some level of cleanliness had been achieved in the past, Deltans deserved a cleaner environment.

PASTOR (MRS) IZAGBO COMMITTED TO IMPACTING LIVES POSITIVELY

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he initiator of the annual Haven of Refuge Foundation Crusade and Empowerment programme, Pastor (Mrs) Florence Izagbo has pledged avowed commitment to impacting lives positively through her project.

She affirmed this, while interacting with journalists at the fifth stanza in the series of the annual soul lifting and empowerment scheme recently held at Ibusa in Delta State.

According to her, the crusade and empowerment scheme reminds us of our Lord Jesus provision of succor by feeding the multitude spiritually and materially.
“This project was conceptualized and designed to provide relief to widows, the vulnerable and less privileged in the society.

She further revealed that the scheme which has equally recorded remarkable success, would be expanded to neighboring communities and other states and regions within Nigeria, so as to give it a wider outreach.

An attendee, Mrs Tina Nwaokolo opined that the annual double-barrel programme has tremendous positive impact on the living standards and avowed commitment to worshiping God in truth.

‘This is my fourth consecutive participation in this annual programme. I must commend and pray that God rewards Pastor Mrs. Izagbo for not only touching lives materially but also bringing lots of soul to the service of the Almighty creator”, she added.

Also speaking at the event, Bishop Johnson Abiagom, founder of the Abiagom World Outreach Minstry noted that Haven of Refuge Foundation programme is worthy of emulation as it is a true reflection of biblical injunction of winning souls as well as providing assistance to the needy in the society.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of empowerment/relief items including rice, bread, vegetable oil, and ankara clothing materials to the widows.

Rice price skyrockets as local production declines

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ice consumption in the country has been on a steady rise, beyond the reach of local supply, leading to a supply gap of about two million metric tonnes annually, a new report has disclosed.

This has led to an over 37 per cent increase in the price of the commodity so far in 2023. This was revealed in ‘AFEX Wet Season Crop Production Report for 2023.

The firm said, “Rice consumption in Nigeria has been steadily increasing, aligning with the consistent growth of the rice market, nearly matching the annual population growth projection of 2.6 per cent at two per cent. This has led to a supply gap of about 2 million metric tonnes annually.”

So far, Nigeria has spent over $15bn in the past decade to meet its expanding rice consumption, despite its potential to be a net rice exporter, the firm stated.

Globally, rice prices reached their highest point in nearly 12 years in 2023, primarily due to India’s ban on rice exports and the potential impact of El Nino on production in key regions. These factors, along with rain-induced disruptions and variations in quality during Vietnam’s summer-autumn harvest have further contributed to the price surge.

It noted, “A similar trend is observed in Nigeria, where the price of rice has increased by over 37 per cent year-to-date, driven by reduced production in 2022 due to the effects of flooding during the wet season of that year.” The firm also blamed the increase in prices on flooding and the ripple effect of the international market dynamics.

It, however, expects an increase in production of rice by approximately 4 per cent, and a further increase in the price of paddy rice by up to around 32 per cent.

The firm declared that the production of milled paddy rice has seen a remarkable increase of over 35 per cent in the country, reaching an estimated output of 5.4 million metric tonnes in 2022, up from 3.9 million metric tonnes in 2015. While rice is cultivated across all of Nigeria’s agro-ecological zones, the Northwest region accounts for 72 per cent of the total rice production in the country.
