[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment have sealed 40 petrol filling stations in Anambra for defrauding motorists. Mrs Cordelia Nwachukwu, the Chief Legal Metrology Officer, Weights and Measures Department of the ministry made this known while addressing newsmen in Awka on Friday.

“The marketers’ reasons of high running cost, evaporation, mechanical error and shortage in supply from tanker drivers are not acceptable. “We have been here since one week on audit, and surveillance on oil and gas sector in Anambra.
“We inspected about 100 filling stations and about 40 of them were found wanting, what that means is that 40 per cent of filling stations here were shortchanging their customers.“The 40 filling stations have been sealed and the owners invited for questioning,’’ she said.
Nwachukwu said some of the outdated equipment used by the marketers were also blacklisted and ordered outright removal. She said the ministry would intensify the test and verification of weighing and measuring instruments used for trade in all sectors to ensure Nigerians got value for their money.

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]eaders of Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), on Saturday, said that the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari had been under-reported to the public. The group made this known during its third Annual Independence Youth Pep Talk Programme organised in partnership with the National Committee of Buhari Support Groups (NCBSG) held in Lagos.
The event, which brought hundreds of young Buhari’s supporters, was tagged: “Change Mantra-Before, Now and the Future (Account of the Current Government). In his address, Senator Abu Ibrahim, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, NCBSG, said that the achievements of Buhari were huge in terms of infrastructure, security, transport and economy, which were not well reported in the media.
Abu, who was represented by Otunba Abiodun Ajiboye, the National Secretary of NCBSG, said that the objective of the event was to create awareness about the achievements of Buhari’s government.
“There is no doubt that the gigantic achievements of this administration have been under-reported and as such, efforts have to be made to sound it clear into the ears of those who never want our success story.
“It has become more important today than ever to focus on the achievements of this administration since the only question people ask is “what are the achievements of this government’’?
“In fairness to those in opposition and those asking such questions, politics is a game of self appraisal. After all, if you do not blow your trumpet, no one will blow it for you,’’ he said.
The senator, who lauded Buhari’s achievements, said that Buhari’s administration had a lot to its credit.
“If the ability to protect lives and property is not an achievement, then what is an achievement?
“The ability to look at corruption in the face and confront it is indeed a new beginning.
“It is the beginning of a new Nigeria that will lead the country into prosperity. Buhari deserves to be re-elected in 2019 and will be re-elected,’’ Abu said.
On his part, Mr Abdulwaheed Odunuga, the Coordinator of BYO, Lagos State, noted that the media had the responsibility of informing the public about the achievements of government.
Odunuga said that inadequate information about the President’ achievements could affect the goodwill of the government.
According to him, the President had delivered on his three cardinal objectives which are security, economy and anti-corruption.
The National President of BYO, Malam Yusuf Nalado, reiterated that the President had improved on security, agriculture and economy with a rise in external reserves, among other achievements.
“I urge you to remain focus and resolute as 2019 elections approach. Our youths should not be deceived with money.
“Nigerian youths should be focused and reject money bags who might want to use them. They should not yield to the temptation of vote buyers.
“God has helped Nigeria by giving us somebody like President Buhari who is a man of integrity and who will not loot the treasury. We have to make sure we support him,’’ Nalado said.
He urged members of the BYO to remain committed toward re-electing Buhari and prevent the main opposition party, PDP, from making a come-back to government.
The Keynote Speaker, Mr Ife Adebayo, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, said that President Buhari’s achievements in energy, agriculture and youth empowerment were huge.
Adebayo recalled that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday also inaugurated another power project in Lagos to show the commitment of the government to energy, among others, to ease business.
Chief Yetunde Babajide, South-West Woman Leader, National Committee of Buhari Support Group (BSG), said that the President had brought positive changes to the country and should be allowed to consolidate on his achievements by re-electing him in 2019 elections.
Babajide said that the youth, the old, the women, had felt good governance in Buhari-led administration in the last three years.
She advised Nigerians to bring Buhari back in 2019 elections for the country to continue to enjoy peace and progress.

[dropcap]N[/dropcap]igeria and Republic of Benin have strengthened their bilateral relationship with the formal opening of the new Economic Community of West African States Joint Border Post at Seme-Krake, Badagry, Lagos State.
The project which began in 2011 was financed by the European Union Commission under the Transport Facilitation Programme at an estimated cost of €18.2 million.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Muhammadu Buhari, who is also the Chairman, ECOWAS Heads of State, Authority and Government, thanked the EU for its commitment to the development of the sub-region.
Buhari noted that the EU had apart from funding the Seme-Krake border post, also provided funds for similar projects at Noepe-Akanu (Ghana/Togo) and Malanville JBP (Benin /Niger).
He said: “The Seme-Krake Joint Border Post is located on the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor, which represents about 70 percent of the sub-region’s total transit trade. “The Joint Border Post will serve as a significant population in the two beneficiary countries of Nigeria and Benin with an estimated population of over 200 million.”

Buhari said the Joint Border Post would facilitate seamless movements of persons, goods and services between both countries and improve regional integration which was one of the objectives of ECOWAS. He said: “It is a symbol of integration which brings together the people of Nigeria and Benin.” Also, the President of Benin, Patrice Talon, said both countries had a shared history and an inseparable future, stressing that it would create an easier life for citizens and other travelers.
Talon said: “Our police administrations will cooperate more easily to ensure our safety. Our customs administrations will be more efficient in their mission.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geofrey Onyema and the Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service, Alhaji Muhammed Babandede were all present to grace and witness the occassion.
However, the Nigeria Customs Service operating at the border, headed by Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba has been described by stakeholders and security experts who witnessed the visit as a man who knows his onion; a dogged and gallant Customs officer who does not compromise in carrying out his duty even in all commands he had worked.

Presidents Buhari and Talon’s visit to Seme Command is not only remarkable, but would go down the memory lane in Nigeria Customs most especially Seme command, as this is coming only few days after Seme Customs Command released outstanding record of over N1billion revenue raked into the coffers of the Federal Government between August and September, 2018 fiscal year.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Presidency has dismissed the threat by leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu to wage war against the country and prevent the 2019 general elections from taking place in the South East, saying there was no cause for alarm.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, gave the assurance recently saying that Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari is strong enough to defend its territory against any threat.
Shehu stressed that the utterances of the disputed IPOB leader were a mere distraction that would not be allowed to undermine the relationship Nigeria has enjoyed with other countries.
He said the Buhari administration has the assurances of other nations that they would continue to reciprocate the respect Nigeria has for their sovereignty.
The fugitive IPOB leader who was undergoing trial for alleged treason jumped bail and disappeared from the country only to resurface in Israel recently and issued threats to Nigeria in a video clip he clandestinely released.
The statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu reads:
“The Presidency wishes to restate that Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari is strong enough to defend its territory against any threat, assuring all Nigerians that there is no reason to worry about the hollow outburst by Nnamdi Kanu, the disputed leader of IPOB on returning to the country “with hell’’.
“Instead, we see the re-enactment of his bizarre, episodic threat as a mere distraction which will not be allowed to detract from the existing cordial relationships between Nigeria and other countries.
“The Buhari administration is in constant touch with other friendly nations and has the best assurances that they would continue to reciprocate the respect Nigeria has for the sovereignty of their nations.
“Nigerians have nothing to fear from this”, Shehu added.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he federal government said it is working with religious and traditional leaders on ways to limit the number of children a woman can give birth to.
The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, who disclosed this while responding to questions during a session at the 24th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja, noted that the country’s population had been identified as one of the great challenges confronting the successful implementation of the Economic Growth and Recovery Plan (ERGP).
She acknowledged that religious leaders are a third force in the development of Nigeria, and that the federal government has been working with them to control population growth.
“We have been engaging traditional, religious rulers and other leaders. Specifically, we have found out that to be able to address one of the great challenges that we identified in the ERGP, which is the growth in our population, we need to engage these institutions,” she said.
“And we hope that with their support, we will get to a point where we can come out with the policy that limits the number of children that a mother can have because that is important for sustaining our growth.
“The ERGP is not a new plan, it’s a plan that reviewed what needs assessment, what was in the vision 2020, what is in existing sector plans so because we have taken those plans and used them, the next administration will continue them, which government will not want to continue to improve the infrastructure. What we have in the ERGP are things that any government must do.”
[dropcap]D[/dropcap]eputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who recently got the PDP ticket to represent Enugu West Senatorial district for the fifth time will soon dump the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) because of his dissatisfaction over the treatment meted out to him by the PDP especially after the Port Harcourt primary election which produced Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate.
He has allegedly been involved in high-level negotiations with some top formations of the APC, because he was aggrieved about the way he has been treated since Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, defected to the PDP. What is, however, unclear is the position the APC will give him upon defection. A source said Ekweremadu’s defection “is just in a matter of days.” This will be another major defection after Saraki and former minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, defected from the APC and PDP, respectively. It was also gathered that “Ekweremadu was not happy with the way he was used and dumped by the PDP.”
A chieftain of the APC from the South East had earlier said: “Look at the way they treated Ekweramadu. When all of them left, Ekweramadu remained to fight for the survival of this party. How many of them would have resisted the temptation not to defect in the face of the intimidation, harassment, prosecution and persecution meted out on him.’
“As a person, he had nothing to lose if he had defected then. In fact, he had everything to gain. He probably would have been the senate president because he was offered the slot. Then, when you people now return, you feel that people who had helped this party to survive, did not matter, again, simply because you got a presidential ticket. Also, even Saraki knows that if the Deputy Senate President had not been loyal, they would have gotten at him (Saraki), long ago.
“All the trials Ekweramadu was put through were all because of Saraki. But, when it was the turn of Saraki to be there for him, he failed him and as we speak, how many days is this after the primary. Atiku is yet to call Deputy Senate President. You don’t treat a man who has been taking bullets on you people’s behalf like that. Well, I wish them and PDP well, but, they should know that action begets reaction and they will pay the price for this mistreatment of people, who laboured for the party during the toughest time. And, if Ekweramadu leaves, we will hold these people responsible,” he stated.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he annual Ine Festival celebrated by the people of Asaba in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State as a way of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the people from generation to generation.
High Chief (Ogbueshi) Nwanze Oduah who was fully kitted in his traditional war apparel and bearing spears had taken his seat in his colorfully decorated courtyards (Ogwa) awaiting them to pay him homage. With him were his equally kitted service chiefs. The wait was spiced by flutists who fell over themselves to keep boredom at bay amid sips of palm wine, assorted gins, beers, and other alcoholic beverages. In the mean time, individuals and interests groups came to pay special homage to the celebrant.
High Chief Nwanze Oduah is a quintessential leader and gentleman. He is the embodiment of cerebral articulation, the essence of unparalleled philanthropy, the epitome of intellectual and breathtaking simplicity, the personification of undiluted humanness, the perfect example of leadership symbolism, the paragon of idealism, the soul of humanity, the heart of warrior, the perfect gentleman. Indeed, High Chief Nwanze Oduah is a born leader and has leadership thrust upon him.

He was led by the warriors adorned mainly in red attires, armed with spears and their headgear adorned with eagle and parrot feathers. In an exclusive chat with the crew of Grassroots Publishers online during the ‘Ine- festival’, The High Chief Nwanze Oduah explains more on the significance of the festival while calling on the government to do more for Asaba people despite the seemingly infrastructural development that abound.
Hear him:
High Chief Sir, Can you give us a rundown of what you are doing today?
Today is Ine or Ekensu festival. This is a famous festival of the Capital City, Asaba. It is marked by a five day celebration of military-like parades and war dances in each of the five villages of Asaba. The festival is reminiscent of the old battles in which Asaba people distinguished themselves. It is a right of passage in Ahaba Ibokwe. Every year and in the last week of September, Asaba people go into the streets to celebrate the Ine festival. This year was not different as the youths filled the streets in a war charged atmosphere to celebrate the heroics of ancient Asaba.
It is a platform for the people, through their traditional warriors (Ogbus), to showcase their military might, demonstrate their capability to defend the community against external aggression, and to remember old battles for which Asaba people stood out. It is marked by a 5-day celebration of military-like parades and war dances by the Otu- Ihaza and the Ogbus, which has gradually taken the form of a cultural carnival, with various costumes gracing the occasion.

In Asaba ,the festival normally start about July every year with the ceremony called ‘Aja’. After the ‘Aja’ proceeds the ‘Iwa-ji’ and the culminates to the ‘Ine Festival’.
During the ‘Ine’ normally the five quarters of Asaba would visit the Odogwu of Asaba’ and now pay a courtesy call to the Asagba of Asaba.
For now we have some kind of issues which is not yet resolved and it boarders of the Odogwu of which my name has been forwarded to the palace as their chosen candidate. And we’re now waiting for the Asagba to come back for the final ceremony. All that is left now is the traditional chalking from the Asagba. After that the Odogwu can now assume his full office. The office of the Odogwu, from age long, is responsible for the territorial defense against invasion by the enemies or attacks. The Iyase is the field marshal while the Odogwu is the Army Commander of the Community in times of war. This is why we move round with our cutlasses, our spears, our war regalias with the active men.

I am proud to say that we know our root. The only Community that was not conquered throughout Anioma land by Benin Kingdom. Our Warriors (the Ogbu’s ) fought for our identity, resisting the Oba of Benin to install a king for us. Today marks the end of all traditional festivals in AHABA UJOM. It’s signifies that burial rights shall commence from tomorrow.
It is a period the Asaba people dedicate to thanking the Almighty God and their ancestral gods for their goodness to the people and their blessings on Asaba land. The Ine festival climaxes the yearly activities of Asaba people. “It is a time to celebrate unity and peaceful coexistence among the people.” It a festival meant to cap the traditional New Yam festivities of the people of Asaba that promotes peace among them.
It was colorfully eye-catching as the warriors (the Ogbu’s) were adorned in red, hand with a spear, women dressing in different colors, musicians entertaining the spectators. Another Carnival of its kind to remind us of our roots.
It appears you are being liked by virtually every youth. What is the reason behind this show of support.
I love my people and my people love me. While I was living United Kingdom, I assisted a lot of our youths. I kept most of our youths in my house in United Kingdom. I call it another home for homeless. Ahaba youths who found their way down to the United Kingdom, empowered them. I accommodated them for like six months; got them jobs and assisted them to regularize their papers and all that. I believe the love started from there. Infact during my stay in United Kingdom, I was the President of Asaba Development Union in the entire United Kingdom. I was elected the youngest President in 1993. I believe the love started from there. I’ve assisted most of them to travel abroad without any kind of assistance from their parents and that’s why you see so many of them calling me father, even though I am much younger than them.
That relationship has been there between myself and the youths. Around 2006 there was this high incidence of cult activities all over the Asaba town. I was on my way to London when our Royal Majesty Obi(Prof.) Chike Edozien called me and said to me, you cannot travel abroad while our beloved town is on fire, I then turned back and postponed my trip. I was able to bring the situation under control at the various sides. So, I quite appreciate their support no doubt. Sometimes they could be in problem and they will say, ‘please call me father ‘,Call me father. And I will come to their rescue. So, I have this strong relationship with my people because I love my people and they come first in whatever I do.
High Chief , what is your final message to the youths of Asaba?
Asaba people must remain peaceful and show love to each other because Ine represents peace. My word “ Ine festival promotes unity, peace and showcases a season of celebration for the people to pray for much better harvest during the current year.” We appreciate the governor for his support and the empowerment to our youths because presently, we do not have land for farming .We are appealing to the government, banks and parastatals to come to our aid. When government acquire our Lands , there should be a kind of huge compensation to the people as contained in the Law. Well, we‘ll kind of re-awaken the consciousness of our people. We cannot be compared with towns like Okpanam, Ugbolu and Ibusa Communities. Those people still have their lands for farming but we don’t have anymore. So we are we’re appealing to the government to please look into this and reserve some kind of space for the host community because an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. So, we are still appealing to Gov. Okowa to come to our aid. We can see a lot of infrastructural development so far in Asaba, but we are now like Oliver Twist. We still need more. I also use this opportunity inherent in the celebration to draw the attention of the state government to some serious development issues affecting Asaba. We’re peace loving Community and we will continue to support the government of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa. Thank you.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he decision of Gov. Okowa (SMART AGENDA)to create the Delta Capital Territory Development Agency, DCTDA, 27years after its creation, was an indication that the state capital has not attained the status it ought to have attained in terms of infrastructure and living conditions of the citizens in the capital city. That was why the state government created an agency to give it that bite and focus, but the reverse was the case of this agency headed by Chief Clement Ofuani as they have failed us. Deltans are calling on Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa to sack this body for non performance.

But when our reporter visited the Delta Capital Territory Development Agency, DCTDA office,in Asaba, for its comment on the poor condition of some of the Capital Territory roads across, the Director-General in charge of the agency was not on seat.
