UBA To Sustain Cost Efficiency, Improved Asset Quality Measures

[dropcap]U[/dropcap]nited Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has assured its local and international investors that it’s prudent focus on improved asset quality as well as the continuous adoption of strict cost efficient measures will help the bank achieve its objectives and priorities for the 2019 financial year and beyond.

This the bank has said will culminate into an institution with even stronger indices laced  with the capacity to churn out strong double-digit growth in annuity-based trade services, enhanced offerings and improved customer service.

Already, the bank has instituted a number of enhanced risk management and control framework which have in no small measure contributed to its financial performances and overall balance sheet growth over the years.

The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kennedy Uzoka, who noted this in a submission while presenting the bank’s 2018 full year results during an international investor/ analysts conference call on Thursday, explained that UBA’s well diversified asset book supported by stable funding structure, placed it in a premium position to perform remarkably despite the falling economic indices in its operating environment.

He said, “In spite of slow recovery in economic activities in Nigeria (our single largest market), the Group’s total assets has grown by 19.7%, driven largely by a strong deposit growth of 23%, as the drive for retail deposits continue to yield desired results. Leveraging on enhanced customer service, the Group grew retail deposits by 48%, thus strengthening the funding base and providing the foundation for lower cost of funds in 2019.

“Notably, the growth in balance sheet also partly reflects the impact of exchange rate difference between the reporting dates (2017: N331/USD vs. 2018: N359/USD), as 37% of loans and 27% of overall balance sheet is FCY-denominated. The Group maintained its appetite for a well-diversified balance sheet, with over 60% in liquid, low risk instruments.”

Uzoka explained to the investors that the bank recorded impressive growths achieved across major financial lines, recording a 48 percent year-on-year growth in retail deposits and improved CASA ratio to 77 percent.

In its results for the year end December 2018, UBA gross earnings grew by 7.0 percent to N494.0 billion, compared to N461.6 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017. The Bank’s total assets also grew significantly by 19.7 percent to an unprecedented N4.9 trillion for the year under review

Throwing more light on the financials, he stated that gross earnings grew by 7% year-on-year, despite regulation and market conditions undermined the non-interest income line. Interest income, which contributed 73% of gross earnings, grew by 11%, driven by strong interest income on treasuries, reflecting the low-risk appetite and treasury-led strategy adopted during the year. He noted that the lower non-interest income was occasioned by market condition and regulatory impact on FX trading income, adding that growing volume on FX trading is compensating for lower margin on this business, thus reinforcing our positive growth expectation on this income line in 2019.

While speaking on the strength of the financial institution in the coming years, especially on the back of it’s African and non-African subsidiaries, Uzoka said the bank’s recent foray into key markets and economies remain a milestone that will catapult the institution in the coming years.

He said, “UBA is a unique pan-African franchise with diversified risk and earnings across fast growing African economies with sound governance, risk management and compliance culture which can be seen from our adherence to international best practice. Our robust digital banking platform through which we are leveraging technology to serve over 15 million customers in a cost efficient approach that has helped to deepen African banking penetration.

“We have the strong financial capacity backed by high capitalization (BASEL II capital ratio well above requirement) and strong liquidity, and we have worked hard towards connecting Africa and the world through our presence in key African markets and major global financial centres such as New York, London and Paris.”

PDP Reclaims Osun State, As Tribunal Declares Adeleke Winner

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal on Friday, declared Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party as the duly-elected governor of Osun state.

The tribunal sacked Isiaka Oyetola of the All Progressive Congress(APC),urging INEC to withdraw Oyetola’s certificate and issue a certificate of return to Adeleke. Recall that the tribunal held that the re-run election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC was illegal, null and void.

In the ruling read on behalf of a three-member panel of judges by Justice Peter Obi, the tribunal held that the returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had no powers to cancel the election in the seven polling units on September 22, 2018 leading to the rerun election on September 27, 2018, adding that he acted “ultra vires his powers.”

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, says the state government has arrested six head teachers, and also demoted Chief Inspectors of Education and others over illegal fees collections in the state. Ebie stated this in Asaba while addressing newsmen on the backdrop of the embarrassing viral video of Success Adegor, a seven-year-old primary three pupil of Okotie Eboh primary school I, in Sapele who was sent home from school few day ago over school fees collection.

He said that no primary and secondary school head is authorized to collect any fee outside the prescribed fee for collection in the state.

Ebie mentioned the prescribed fees which schools are allowed to collect at the beginning of session as N50 for school badge, N250 for report card, N100 for consumables and N750 for sports wears which he said is necessary for students’ use during inter-house sports competitions which hold second term of every session.

According to him, any fee outside these fees, including the examination fee which led to the suspension of the Okotie Eboh Primary School head teacher, Mrs. Vero Igbigwe, is illegal and will attract the anger of the ministry which will be enforced according to civil service rules.

However, some journalists who have been victims of head teachers extortion at the briefing told the commissioner that almost all the public secondary and primary schools in the state are guilty of this offence as they impose levies of all kinds on students which the students must compulsorily pay.

Among some of the illegal levies identified are examination fees at the end of every term, admission fees at the beginning of the session, buying toiletries for schools which are shared among teachers, buying brooms, mugs, markers for the schools.

Hon. Austin Ojeogbue Nnabuife with Senator Peter Nwaoboshi dancing after election victory

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t was jubilation galore as political office holders in Oshimili North local government area of Delta State were called upon to emulate the good virtues of a renowned loyal and committed chieftain of the party, Hon. Austin OjeogbueNnabuife recently.
The call was made at an enlarged gathering of PDP supporters drawn from various communities of the local government area at the residence of the party chieftain at Ezukwu, Ibusa, where others also joined in the victory celebration of governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s re-election organized
by Hon. Nnabuife in collaboration with his over two hundred members of Aniocha/Oshimili Voters Assembly, a socio political PDP pressure group.
Some of those who spoke in an interview at the occasion included the chairman of PDP ward 4 Comr. Navy Captain Mike Okeze, the President General of Anyalobum community youth and Mr. Henry OnuohaOkafor who individually described Hon. Nnabuife as not only an exceptional party leader but also a rare politician that has over the years used his personal resources to support the growth of the party and its members at the unit, ward, state as well as senatorial and national levels.
Community leader and staunch members of the party from Illah, Ebu, Ukala and Aninwalo commended Nnabuife
for his overwhelming interest towards any PDP activities, stating that if other political leaders toe the lifestyle of the Aniocha/Oshimili founder and national coordinator, there is no doubt that the members especially the less privileged amongst them would be better placed in the society.
The speakers maintained that Hon. Nnabuife during his tenure as councilor that represented ward 4 comprising Ezukwu, Achalla and Ogboli Ibusa, he was never found wanting, rather, was seen and recognized as a committed,
trusted party leader that was always carrying every one along no matter how inconvenient such occasion might be to him.
The people noted further that apart from his tight and busy scheduled as the spokesman/representative of the Diokpa (village head) of his community, Ibusa, he was always engaged and played his roles towards contributing financially to the overall development of the immediate community and the entire town.
Others who spoke and poured encomium on Hon. Nnabuife

The people also remarked that the Special Assistant to the governor during the just concluded elections of

candidates of the PDP single handedly financed the construction of bill boards hung at strategic areas of the local government for support of the governor Okowa, Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu and Hon. Princess Pat Ajudua as well as produced different sizes of T. shirts/caps to match, production of jingle advert placement on radio, television and newspaper propaganda informing and canvassing to the public on the need to cast their valid votes for all the candidates of the PDP while he in addition provided logistics to the electorate to enable them travel either to collect their PVCs and to feed during the exercise.
The people in their hundreds at the voting venue during the elections were not left out as they also benefited from the free food and drinks provided by Hon. Nnabuife in appreciation for their large turn out to cast their votes.
The news of Hon. Nnabuife’s philanthropic gesture spread like wild fire to all nook and crannies of the local government area as a result, his unit witnessed the highest number of vote cast in both at the Presidential and the governorship and House of Assembly elections.
It is, however, the opinion of these persons of Oshimili North including some political leaders in collaboration with this writer that Hon. Austin OjeogbueNnabuife with the help of God and recommendation of the power that be such like the person of Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi and others will continue to push ahead in recommending to the governor the need to further give higher appointment to Hon. Nnabuife so as to enable him do more for the party and the people just as they jointly commended the governor and his team for the appointment of Nnabuife as one of the Special Assistant on Community Development.
The people also commended the adhoc staff of INEC and members of the various security outfits for their good work during and after the elections which brought governor Okowa, Sen. Nwaoboshi, Hon. Elumelu, Hon. Pat Ajudua and all other PDP candidates as winners.

Owelle Rochas Withdrew 17bn From State Coffers In Three Days, Says PDP

Owelle Okorocha

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]harles Ezekwem, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, has accused Rochas Okorocha, the incumbent Governor of the state, of withdrawing N17billion from four banks in three days and converting government property to personal use. Ezekwem said this while addressing a press conference in Owerri, the capital city of Imo State, on Saturday.

The state chairman claimed Okorocha withdrew the funds between Tuesday, March 12, 2019, and Thursday, March 14, 2019, from Access Bank, Zenith Bank, Unity Bank and Skye Bank (Polaris).

He said: “In the last two days alone, Governor Okorocha and his cronies transferred ownership and re-registered more than 150 government vehicles to individuals. Government property including furniture and electronics in Government House, Owerri, are being moved out to Ogboko, Ideato South, the governor’s country home.

“About 300 uninstalled transformers have been moved to the governor’s home in Ogboko.”

The party further alleged that there was ongoing mass employment and back-dating of dates of employment with a view to creating problems for the incoming government.

“We are also aware of the rampant issuance of Certificates of Occupancy to family members and friends of the Okorocha family,” the party said.

According to the party, those involved in the act do so at their own peril.

However, in response to the allegation, Okorocha, through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, urged the public to ignore what he termed the posturing of the incoming PDP government, saying the party lacked the right to harass the current government and financial institutions until they were sworn in.

He said: “There is a government in place and until May 29, 2019, that government should continue to work in the interest of the state and her people and also continue to carry out programmes and policies for the same purpose, until its tenure ends. To begin to harass or give directives to financial institutions in the state is an act of hostility and they should know that.

“The financial institutions in the state should disregard such directive and continue to do the right thing and take the right action since the best they can do is to confront the outgoing government on any financial transaction they have reservations about when they take over.’’

DELTA APC ACCUSES OGBORU OF STEALING N3BILLION ELECTION FUNDS

APC Governorship candidate, Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru flanked by Minister for State Petroleum Resources, Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu at APC campaign rally in Issele-Uku on Wednesday

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] coalition of members of All Progressive Congress, APC, Delta State chapter have accused Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, the Party’s Governorship candidate of stealing the sum of N3billion, meant for the 2019 campaign, sabotaging the party’s chances at the elections.

The group is calling on President Mohammadu Buhari and Chairman of APC,Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to immediately commence investigation on Chief Ogboru and how he spent N3billion meant for elections.

We call on the National Leader of the Party, His Excellency, President
Muhammadu Buhari and our National Working Committee led by Comr. Adams Oshiomhole to immediately set inquiry for Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru to explain the whereabouts of the huge Financial Provisions for the entire 2019 General Elections, the groups said in a press conference.

“It is of public knowledge that Great Ogboru presented a budget of over THREE BILLION NAIRA, which budget was over funded and availed to him. There was no evidence anywhere that he spent N1 billion for the elections.
He refused to properly disburse and chose to release paltry amounts only to his few chosen supporters. Even for his LGA rallies, he never released one Kobo, instead he directed that local leaders and supporters’ task themselves to fund such rallies, and because most leaders couldn’t raise such funds, a lot of LGA rallies were either abandoned or turn out to be huge flops! We also have it on good authority that commissioner positions were sold N50 million each in advance to raise funds that were diverted from the campaigns!”

“APC, as a Mega Political Party, cannot be brought to the low level of mushroom political parties where Ogboru has been practicing his hit-and-run politics of election racketeering and getting away with the dubious acts. Ogboru should be probed!

The groups said Ogboru did more to divide the party in that state than unite it.

The Text at the Press Conference reads:

Chief Ogboru acted like a man determined to fail at all costs by ignoring
and refusing to carry along even the old APC members who joined him with
Prophet Jones Erue. He stubbornly chose to work only with the few Labour
Party people who he came into the APC with. Even at that, he couldn’t
manage things properly within his inner circle as there were open
hostilities and in fighting between his core people and those of Sen. Ovie
Omo-Agege on one hand, and former Gov. Emmanuel Uduaghan’s people on the
other hand.

Stressing further : It is with an air of the mixed feelings of both Joy of
APC’s Victory in the Presidential Election and Sadness of the Party’s
Failure at the Gubernatorial Poll in Delta State, that we, the Coalition
of Delta APC Support Groups, address you today in this post-election
briefing, after our crucial urgent meeting held in Asaba, to clinically
and critically appraise the just-concluded General Elections.

First and foremost, we whole-heartedly Congratulate our beloved President,
His Excellency, General Muhammadu Buhari, the President of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria, his vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the All
Progressives Congress, APC Family across Nigeria, and, indeed, Nigerians
on the well-deserved victory at the Presidential elections.

We are, indeed, saddened by the unfortunate loss of the gubernatorial
election in Delta State, where Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru was the Party’s
(APC) Candidate to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the most
traumatizing and shameful manner despite the enormous support and
opportunities provided by the National Leadership of the Party.

We were not surprised at the outcome of the Saturday gubernatorial
election in Delta State, as the stage for failure has since last year been
set when Chief Great Ogboru who just joined the party took the destructive
decision to hijack the party in display of desperation! Unfortunately,
working with Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, they were able to hoodwink and secure
the undeserved backing of our National Chairman Comr. Adams Oshiomhole and
the National Working Committee of the Party.

It was disheartening to see that after they achieved their objectives
which ended up factionizing the party, they made no efforts to unite the
party by stooping to conquer. And worst still, inspite of commendable
efforts by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to unite the party in
the State ahead of the elections, Chief Ogboru still didn’t seize the
opportunity to reach out to the Ogodo/Emerhor side to procure peace and
unity. Even worse, he also either pushed aside or completely ignored other
key stakeholders particularly in the Delta North like Engr. Hyacinth
Enuha, Rt. Hon. Engr. Victor Ochei, Professor Pat Utomi, Mrs Marian Ali,
Dr. Cairo Ojuogo and others thereby unwittingly conceding the whole of
Delta North District to Okowa right from the get go!. In the South
District, Ogboru neither cultivated in key person nor did he have any
persons, nor plans in place to win, while at home in his Delta Central
District, he naively believed he would win 100% without making any efforts
to unite the party in Central for such task.

While the PDP was busy going round the nooks and crannies of the State
with an aggressive campaign, Chief Ogboru refused to embark on intensive
grassroots campaigns round the State to market his manifesto to the people
simply because of his total dependence on a so-called Federal might, which
made him to also ignore every other critical stakeholders and groups, even
including Buhari Support Groups in the State. He had not a single bill
board or posters particularly in Delta north and South of the State. He
only held rallies, sometimes, combining 3 LGAs in one location, and then
naively went away believing he has campaigned in those two Senatorial
zones!

It is pertinent to note that the National Working Committee’s recognition
of the Jones Exco was nothing but handing over the Party’s Gubernatorial
Ticket to the electoral merchant, Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru – a Man with
no electoral value who was over-sold himself to our National Chairman Comr
Oshiomhole! His destructive deception then left the Delta APC comatose
with the attendant implications which is the woeful failure that the Party
suffered in the hands of the PDP at the Saturday March 9 elections.

While we are not ignorant of the fact that a winner must emerge in every
contest, the loss of APC in the Delta 2019 gubernatorial election becomes
more painful to us when we realize the enormous opportunities available to
the APC to win the election but which were misappropriated by Chief Great
Ovedje Ogboru who has proven himself as a man without a strong political
structure that has been responsible for his failures in the previous 5
consecutive governorship elections he participated in since 2003 to 2015
before crossing over to APC.

For the first time for Delta APC, we had the massive power of the federal
government at the centre behind us, our National leadership stood firmly
for us providing enormous support in resources and otherwise. The masses
of Delta State were ready to effect a change in Delta. But what we clearly
did not have was a focused and determined Governorship candidate to
translate the opportunity to victory! In fact, we consider it a notorious
fraud for Great Ogboru to waste the 2019 APC Gubernatorial Ticket in such
questionable and shameful circumstances where the Party won a paltry 2
Local Government Areas out of 25 with an alarming figures of 215,938
against PDP’s 925,274.

Finally, we reiterate our demand that the National Working Committee (NWC)
of our great party to set up a panel of enquiry to immediately review the
outcome of the Delta APC overall performance in the just concluded
election: The funds received by the campaign council, the disbursement of
funds and those who received the funds at various Local Government Areas
in the State and to review the results from each polling units across the
State as it was noticed that most leaders played anti party at various
levels in the State. We demand for ‘Operation Show your ward results from
every leader in Delta APC’ irrespective of who they are or the positions
they hold. We understand that Chief Ogboru and a number of his supporters
who could not even win their polling units, not to talk of wards, have all
concluded arrangements to beseech Abuja and again lie and hoodwink our
National Chairman and other National leaders in a bid to secure juicy
federal political appointments!

We must separate the Sheep’s from the Goat’s in Delta APC and only empower
performing leaders in order to so have a formidable and strong party in
our State going forward.

The Statement was signed by Prince Daniel Ekiugbo, Convener, Coalition of
Delta APC Support Groups.
