EFCC Probes Ex-Abia Gov, Son Over Alleged N150bn Fraud

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a massive probe into alleged looting of over N150 billion by the immediate past governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, and members of his family.

His sons – Chinendum Orji Eyinanya (currently Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly) and one Ogonna Orji – are also being investigated for having a hand in the alleged looting.

Orji is currently the senator representing Abia Central in the National Assembly.

The EFCC suspects that Senator Orji collected N48billion as security votes during his eight years in office at N500million per month.

He is said to have also been the authorising officer for the monthly withdrawal of N500million when he was the Chief of Staff to the jailed ex-Governor Orji Uzor Kalu.

Investigators handling the probe rate Chinedum as a key player in laundering money for his father.

As at Thursday, the EFCC had traced 100 slush accounts to Chinedum.

Eighty per cent of the accounts are still active, The Nation gathered.

Chinedum went through a fresh round of grilling on Thursday before he was released on administrative bail.

However, a source told The Nation in Abuja that what has been uncovered so far against ex-Governor Orji and his sons, is a “tip of the iceberg” because more accounts linked to the family have just been uncovered.

“We are investigating the ex-governor and members of his immediate family, especially his two sons. They are Chinendum Orji Eyinanya (who is the present Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly) and one Ogonna Orji,” a reliable source said.

“The former governor has been intermittently coming for interrogation since November 22, 2018. So, for more than 13 months, our detectives have been painstaking in their covert operation including surfing of documents and invitation of some public officers.  But the quizzing of ex-Governor Orji’s two sons has led to the unearthing of dirty deals during his tenure as the governor of Abia State. He is now a serving Senator.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that over 145 accounts have been linked with the family and the amount allegedly looted in eight years by the ex-governor was over N150billion. Chinedum alone has been operating 100 out of the 45 accounts with 80 per cent of them still active.

“Although we are still profiling more accounts, records confirmed that the ex-governor earned about N48billion in eight years as security votes at N500 million per month. He was also the authorising officer of the N500 million per month as security votes when the convicted ex-Governor Orji Uzor Kalu was the governor. He was Kalu’s Chief of Staff.

“The most interesting aspect of the investigation by EFCC is that most of the looted funds were withdrawn in cash and deposited in cash.

“Our detectives recorded a breakthrough on this fraud case through Bank Verification Number (BVN) system. So, it is not a case of witch-hunt, it is a matter of facts and figures in all the accounts.”

A brief on the preliminary investigation obtained from the EFCC gave an insight into the alleged looting of Abia State as follows:

“A petition dated March 17, 2017 was by filed by Fight Corruption: Save Nigeria Group alleging that the former Abia governor, Theodore Orji of receiving and diverting various sums of monies that accrued to Abia State.

“Such monies were:

*N383 billion revenue from federal accounts

*N55 billion Excess Crude Revenue

*N2.3 billion Sure-P

*N1.8 billion Ecological funds

*N10.5 billion loan from First Bank of Nigeria through the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs.

*N4 billion loan from Diamond Bank

*N12 billion Paris Club refund

*N2 billion Agricultural loan for farmers

*N55 billion ASOPADEC

“The petitioners alleged that the funds were received by Abia State government and nothing could be shown in commensurate with the received funds. Based on the petition, the EFCC commenced investigations.

“In the course of investigation, it was discovered that the former governor who was Chief of Staff to the convicted ex-governor Orji Kalu was the Authorising Officer drawing N500 million monthly purported to be Security Votes which were being converted.

“As he became the governor in 2007, he continued to draw the N500 million cash monthly from June 2007 to May 2015.

“The N500 million, investigation revealed, is aside of the security funds expended on the Nigeria Police, The Nigerian Army, DSS, Navy anti-Kidnapping Squad, Anti- robbery Squad, purchase of Security equipment and vehicles for the security agencies.

“Investigation was extended to his family members to ascertain the link and culpability of the alleged fraud.

“The ex-governor’s first son, Chinendum Orji Eyinanya, who is currently the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, is now a frequent guest at the EFCC headquarters to throw light on his involvement in the fraud.

2023: PDP in secret moves to reconcile govs, others

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s part of its preparation ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched an initiative to reconcile its warring governors. Also to be resolved are the disagreements among aggrieved chieftains across the country.

Top on the list of such feuds is that between Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State.

The talks are to be kept as secret as possible with a view to achieving a high rate of success, we gathered on Saturday.

Party chieftains were disappointed that previous efforts to forge unity in the party had not gone as expected.

They blamed those they branded as fifth columnists within and outside the party for truncating such previous peace efforts, hence the need to keep the fresh reconciliation plans secret.

“The party has since discovered that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its agents are working hard to keep the PDP divided as 2023 approaches,” a well-placed source told The Nation.

“The APC, which benefited from the division within the PDP in 2015 and 2019, has perfected plans to keep our party divided more and more so as to continue benefitting.”

The PDP chieftain also said that the unending media war among the warring persons and groups within the party was always reconciliation difficult.

“It is for this reason that the National Working Committee (NWC) in one of its meetings, resolved, on the suggestion of our national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, to keep our reconciliation efforts as secret as possible. When these fifth columnists are less aware of our moves, the less havoc they can wreck,” he said.

Wike/Dickson face-off

Chieftains of the PDP, it was gathered, are immensely worried by the sharp division between Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State.

Dickson’s tenure will be over this week.

The two PDP governors are locked in an unending verbal war which reached a head in the run up to the November 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa State. The PDP lost the polls to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Nation gathered that as part of the ongoing moves to return the party to the path of peace, the PDP national chairman and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State have met severally with the two sides in the crisis with a view to ending the face-off and uniting the two governors in the interest of the party. “Prince Secondus understands the need to have these two great PDP leaders on one page and he is doing a lot along with others to achieve that,” our source said.

Another person who is said to be involved in settling the Wike/Dickson feud is the Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman of the party, Senator Senator Walid Jibrin.

“The PDP BoT chairman and many of our trustees are not comfortable with the situation between Governors Wike and Dickson,” a source said.

“Many have attributed the loss in Bayelsa to the situation and they are working hard to change the situation. Several meetings have been held and we are sure of positive result this time.

“One thing we have achieved is the halt in media allegations and counter allegations between the two camps. The several meetings among our leaders brought that about.

“All those involved are passionate PDP members and as such, they are aboding by the advices of our leaders currently working hard to end the face off. You can see that noting is being heard in the papers about the disagreement.”

Last month, the PDP noted that the crisis between the two governors was as a result of recent disputes between their two states. The party, in a statement, said that the national leadership, having noted the issues, would move to end the rift as soon as possible while urging the media and fifth columnists to stop escalating the crisis.

The statement which was signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, National Publicity Secretary of the party, urged both Governors Wike and Dickson to sheathe their swords while the leadership harmoniously resolves the issue.

“We therefore assure all our leaders, critical stakeholders, members and supporters of our great party, particularly in Rivers and Bayelsa states, to remain calm and united, as the issue is already being resolved,” Ologbodiyan said while insisting that “the PDP remains one big indivisible family and will not allow anything to undermine its unity and focus especially at this trying time in the history of the nation.”

Party leaders approach Jonathan

The Nation also gathered that some prominent leaders of the party, under the leadership of a former Senate President, recently met and resolved to approach former President Goodluck Jonathan to come forward and lead the PDP reconciliatory efforts in the interest of the party. According to a party source who was at the meeting, the parley was held at the Abuja home of a former Kogi State governor, last week Sunday.

The source said: “The leaders are not pleased with the aloofness with which the former President treats party issues. They noted the fact that he remains the strongest bridge within the party as at today and should not be treated as less important if the PDP really wants to return to winning ways in 2023.

“Jonathan is one of the most respected and loved chieftains of the party alive today. So, the decision is to appeal to him to come and lead us to unity.

“It has been observed that he may not have been treated well since he left office, even by our own party leaders and some governors. But being the man of peace he is, he has not raised any alarm but we must not continue to ignore the issues as they concern him. That is why we will be approaching him to come take charge of our march to peace. We need him on the frontline as 2023 approaches. We will go to him and offer him leadership.”

Similarly, the BoT chairman, Senator Jibrin, had in December, hinted on plans by the party to embark on reconciliation to strengthen it ahead of the 2023 elections. “The Board of Trustees is making necessary arrangement to reconcile the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, and his Bayelsa counterpart, Seriake Dickson, and of course, other party members to make our party stronger with a view to taking over government from the ruling APC in 2023.”

Atiku/Jibrin too

The Nation also gathered from insiders that the face-off between Senator Jibrin, the BoT chairman and the camp of former Vice President and presidential candidate of the party in the 2019 elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has also been looked into and the warring parties urged to end the disagreement in the interest of the party. According to sources, parties in the face-off have agreed to sheath their swords while talks continue.

Jibrin had, some weeks back, alleged threats to his life over his refusal to endorse an automatic ticket for Atiku in the 2023 general election.

During a media briefing, he said some unidentified persons visited PDP Secretariat in Abuja, warning him that Atiku should be endorsed for the 2023 Presidential polls or he (Jibrin) should be ready to face the consequences.

He said: “I have received calls from some people threatening my life for not mentioning that the presidency should be zoned to the Northeast.

“They told me that I am a traitor and that I should have said only Atiku would get the ticket because I said the Supreme Court had already overthrown him (Atiku). They said I should say Atiku is the man that I want because I am a leader. About three people went to Wadata Plaza and demanded to see Munir Yerima. When they were there, Yerima called me saying some people wanted to talk to me, and that they were intermediaries between me and some party men.

“They told me on telephone that I have gone astray and if I don’t recant, they would arrange bandits to deal with me wherever I go. So, I told them to go and do whatever they want to do that I’m equal to the task. Then I realized it was only a demonstration, but they may be planning to assassinate me,” he explained, adding that he had written to the Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure that the matter is seriously handled.

Though yet to be confirmed, there are indications that former Senate President Bukola Saraki was instrumental to the intervention of prominent PDP chieftains in the matter. A prominent traditional ruler from the northern part of the country, who was once elected into the national assembly to represent his constituency on the platform of the opposition party, was also said to have intervened in the matter and sued for peace.

Senate constitutes 56-member Constitution review committee

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, yesterday, constituted a 56-member Constitution Review Committee to handle all bills seeking one alteration or the other in the 1999 Constitution.

The committee consists of eight principal officers who will serve as steering committee heads within the larger committee, a senator from each of the 36 states and two senators from each of the six geo-political zones.

The announcement of Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as chairman of the committee and presiding for the first time since inauguration efffectively laid to rest rumour of rift between him and Lawan.

For several months, there have been speculations of a friction between the duo as many wondered why the Delta-Senator had not been allowed to preside over plenary sessions.

Names of members committee include the Senate Leader, Abdullahi Yahaya, Deputy Senate Leader, Prof. Robert Ajayi Boroffice, Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Bwacha , Minority Whip, Philip Tanimu Aduda, Deputy Minority Whip, Sahabi Alhaji Yau and former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu.

However, Ifeanyi Uba (YPP Anambra South) has kicked against his exclusion from the committee, alleging that the whole members were drawn from the APC and PDP, which he said was unfair .

But the Senate President in his response, said the composition was not based on party but on states and zonal basis.

“This composition is not about party affiliation but of equal representation from states and geopolitical zones,  since the assignment before the committee is for the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians devoid of partisanship.”

He admonished the committee members to be patriotic in their conducts and activities, saying, “what is expected of you is to give Nigerians constitution that will enhance stability, unity and enabling environment that will afford every Nigerian to actualise his or her dreams without let or hindrance.”

He, therefore, called on all Nigerians seeking alteration in any of the provisions of the 1999 constitution to submit their memoranda to the committee.

INEC deregisters 74 political ,As 18 parties survive INEC axe

Pic.7. Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

Announcing the de-registration of the 74 parties in a press briefing in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Yakubu said they were deregistered for their inability to fulfill requirements for existence based on Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He recalled that prior to the 2019 general election, Nigeria had 91 political parties while one more party was registered by court order after the election, making a total of 92 political parties.

Yakubu said that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) vests in INEC, the power to register and regulate activities of political parties.

He also recalled that in 2018, the Constitution was amended.

“In addition to the extant provision for the registration of political parties, the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution (Section 225A) empowers the commission to deregister political parties.”

Yakubu said that in order to implement the provision of the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution, the commission carried out an assessment of political parties to determine compliance with the requirements for their registration.

He said that similarly, following the conclusion of the 2019 general election, including court ordered re-run elections arising from litigations, the commission was able to determine the performance of political parties in the elections.

Yakubu said that in addition, the parties were also assessed on the basis of their performance in the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) the only Local Government elections which INEC was empowered to conduct.

He said consequently, the commission had determined that 16 political parties fulfilled the requirements for existence based on Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution, while 75 parties did not satisfy the requirements of the fourth alteration to the constitution.

“However, one of the political parties, the Action Peoples Party (APP) filed a suit in court and obtained an order restraining the commission from deregistering it.

“The party remains registered pending the determination of the case by the court.

“The new political party, Boot Party (BP) registered by court order after the 2019 general election will also continue to exist.

“Accordingly, 74 political parties are hereby deregistered. With this development, Nigeria now has 18 registered political parties,” Yakubu said.

Yakubu recalled that based on this provision, the commission, between 2011 and 2013, deregistered 39 political parties.

“However, several of the parties challenged the power of INEC to deregister them, particularly on the grounds that the Electoral Act is inferior to the constitution and that deregistration infringed their fundamental rights under the same constitution.

“Subsequently, the courts ordered the commission to reinstate the parties.

“It was for this reason that the National Assembly amended the Constitution to empower the commission to deregister political parties on the following grounds:

“Breach of any of the requirements for registration as a political party.

“Failure to win at least 25 per cent of the votes cast in one State of the Federation in a Presidential election or 25 per cent of the votes cast in one Local Government Area of a State in a Governorship election.

“Failure to win at least one ward in a Chairmanship election, one seat in the National or State Assembly election or one seat in a Councillorship election.”

The deregistered parties included, Alliance National Party (ANP) Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) African Peoples Alliance (APA) Better Nigeria Progressive Party (BNPP) Fresh Democratic Party (FRESH), Hope Democratic Party (HDP) and Nigeria Community Movement Party (NCMP).

Others included, National Unity Party (NUP), Peoples Coalition Party (PCP), Peoples For Democratic Change (PDC), Peoples Trust (PT), Reform and Advancement Party (RAP), United Democratic Party (UDP), Unity Party Of Nigeria (UPN) and United Progressive Party (UPP)

Ghana Witnesses Its First Suspected Coronavirus Outbreak

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n Argentine and a Chinese national have reported to Korle-Bu Teaching hospital under the directive of a private hospital in Accra.

According to peacefmonline.com, the two foreign nationals are said to have shown symptoms of the dreadful virus which has claimed close to 600 lives in Hubei and Wuhan, China. The two suspected carriers of the virus are currently going through series of medical test at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR).

Speaking on Joy news, Dr William Baah, Greater Accra Divisional Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, disclosed that the two patients moved to Ghana on different dates. The Chinese has been been in the country since 2019 whilst the Argentine travelled to Ghana in January 2020.

He added that: “They’ve all developed some symptoms that fit the case definition [but] it doesn’t mean they have the disease,”

However, more test will be run on them to be certain that the two do not have the virus.

Another report coming in from the KIA is that health officers at the airport recently picked up one person for testing after he showed symptoms of the virus at the Kotoka International Airport, Dr Dennis Laryea revealed.

The individual, after being kept in solitude for 6 hours and tested, proved negative. Dr. Laryea said:

“The gentleman wasn’t very happy but he understood that we were doing this in the interest of public safety,”

The virus dubbed 2019-nCoV, has led to more than 20,000 illnesses and more than 560 deaths in China, as well as more than 200 illnesses and two deaths outside of mainland China.

Simple symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, running nose, sore throat, nausea, vomitting, diarrhoea etc

How Buhari Played Into Trump’s Hands over US Travel Ban

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t is  no longer news that  Chad Wolf, the United States, US, Secretary for  Home Land Security ,  on the orders of President Donald Trump,  on Friday, February 1st, 2020,  announced  a  travel  ban ,  restricting  immigration from Nigeria, Eriterea,  Sudan , and Tanzanian,  all African countries  and  the  Asian country  of  Myanmar,  where the Muslim minority   is fleeing genocide from applying for the country’s VISAs  as it may no longer be approved.

Also affected in the expanded US travel ban was   Kyrgyzstan, a former  old Soviet Union state, thus,  bringing the number of countries under the  North American country travel ban to thirteen between 2017 and now.

Donald Trump: US, President

Indeed, what makes it news is that  hundreds of Nigerians who had trooped to the US  embassy in Abuja and the Lagos Consulate office  based on appointment  with the  officials  were disappointed as they could not be attended to. There was even rumour making the rounds that David Oyedipo, the founder of  the Megachu rch  Terbanacle,  Winners Church  Chapel International  based in Ota, Ogun state, was one of those prominent Nigerian  religious leader  who was allegedly  denied  VISA, forcing him to challenge the  US  Consulate officials but that was how far he could. He was forced to abandon the trip.

Not that the initial  travel   ban was  only  extended  to citizens of    Iran, Libya,  Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela and North Korea. The travel ban , according to Diplomatic experts ,  will virtually  block  immigration  from Nigeria and Mynmar, which  were said to have substantial Muslim populations.

The US, 2020, travel  ban, on citizens of Nigeria, particular,    appears to have taken President Muhammadu Buhari   by surprise  as he was forced  to  set  up a Committee, Headed by  Rauf Aregbesola , a former governor of Osun state and  now, minister of Interior,  to study  and address the updated  US requirements for applying for  the  country’s VISA .

The Kastina state born Nigerian President  may  have appointed Areagbesola, to Head the Committee because  Wolf,   his counterpart in the US, Executive,  was the  person that broke the troubling  news to the public.Given the importance attached to the Committee, the President  was said to have given it  the mandate   to work  closely with the American  government , INTERPOL and other relevant stakeholders,  to ensure that all updates are properly implemented.

Pastor Adeboye led RCCG Prayer Walk In Honour Of CAN Directive

Trump may  have known the implication of  imposing a  blanket travel ban on Nigeria ,alongside the  five other countries nationals  being one of the biggest  trading partners with Nigeria. This may have informed why the Home Land Security, which  requested  that  those  seeking  for official, business, tourism and student travel  VISAs, should be exempted,  and it was promptly approved  by the US  President.

Security watchers believe that the Opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, may  have  given the US  government  the  opportunity  to impose the travel ban on Nigeria. The party had raised alarm that the country is in grave  danger , urging  the Katsina state born Nigerian President  to resign  for failing to secure the nation and thus, putting the country’s Democracy  under threat’’.

The party had  made matters worse for the country  by submitting  protest letter  to the embassies of the US and the United Kingdom, UK,  which were said to have reached the duo,  Trump and Boris Johnson,  Prime minister of Britain. Trump has been waiting to get   reports about the security situation of the country  from Abuja  embassy and Lagos Consulate , in order  to decide  on what to do  to  protect its the security  from terrorists  that  might want to penetrate the country from Nigeria.  It was, therefore, not surprising that , when the opportunity came, he did not hesitate in  imposing a temporary travel ban  on Nigeria  .

Femi  Adesina,  Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, alluded to the fact that  the suspension of  immigration  VISAs  to Nigeria  nationals  became necessary   due to security  related  information sharing between Nigeria and the US government but  could not go beyond that.

But the f US, Department of State, equivalent of Nigeria ministry of Foreign Affairs,  had said that the country took the decision  because Nigeria has failed to comply  with the established  identity –management  and information  sharing  criteria  assessed by its performance   metrics, an indication that the security situation of the country had deteriorated.

Ali Ndume, a Senator of Federal Republic  of Nigeria, representing  Borno south Senatorial  district and Chairman, Senate Committee, on Army , appear to have Collaborated the view of the US, Homeland Security, that the security situation in the north east Nigeria is getting worse  by the day. Ndume , who could hide his feelings  when he appear on Channels Television , Sunday politics, lamented the resurgence   of the Boko Haram/Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP and the frequent attack on Communities  in various local government Areas of the state.

He had cited the recent attack  on Communities in Askira  and Damboa  , two local government  Areas, within his Senatorial district  where some  people were said to have been killed  and valuables including food items were carted away, an indication that if the soldiers could put in more effort and caught off their  sources of  food supply the war in the region would be over.

His majory  is the ease at which the Boko Haram and ISWAP, Insurgents enter  most of the Communities in the  local government Areas  to carry out their attacks  despite large presence of security personnel in the state and escape to thin air.  Take for instance, about two weeks ago,  two bombs  were said to have been detonated  in Gwoza,  where the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has a College, for Training of its Cadets . Ndume, described as a radical Lawmaker , from Borno,  also confirmed the Insurgents attack  on Muno,  a few Kilometer to Maiduguri, the state Capital, an indication that it may be the only place that is safe in the state because of the large Concentration of soldiers,  thus , exposing Askira, Damboa, and other Local government Areas to the terrorists. This may have informed why the Islamic Fundamentalists have stepped  up their  efforts to  take over Maiduguri, by launching attacks on the nearby Communities to draw the attention  of the  Tukur Buratai, a Lt .General and Chief of Army that they  are  are as strong as ever.

There are fears  in both official  and unofficial circles that the Insurgents had penetrated  Maiduguri, the Borno state Capital and are waiting for an opportunity to regroup and engage  the soldiers  for control of the north east City.

Recall, that  Babagana Umara Zulum, a Professor And the state  governor , late last year had held a closed door meeting with the Katsina state born Nigerian President,  when he noticed the  threat on Maiduguri  with the  attacks on Communities in Gubio,  Magumeri and Koduga,  as he was said to have wept because of the frequency of the attacks.

The governor was said to  have severally met  with  the Theater Commander of  Operation Lafiya Dole  nd the Commander of   the various Brigades in  the  local government Areas of the state  who were said to have given assurance   of sustained  military  action in the state but not much appear to have been achieved by the soldiers to contain the activities of the Insurgents who had continued to wreck  havoc  in the state.

The insecurity situation in the north east , with the kidnap and Killing of  Lawan Andimi, a Clergyman and Chairman, of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Michika Local government Area, of Adamawa, home state of Atiku Abubakar, a  former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the PDP, in the last general election, may have forced the leadership of the religious Association to orders its members   cross the country on a prayer walk  against the killings in the country.

Last Sunday, Enoch Adejare Adeboye,   the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, leading ,  was said to have  led the  Prayer  walk,  against the   insecurity in the country at Ebute Emeta, Lagos Mainland  Local government, amidst tight security.  Some of the placards  carried by  the people reads : Every life matters, Shed No Blood it Cries To God, All Souls Are Precious To God, It is Evil To kill. The Prayer walk may have  been very successful in the Lagos axisis because  Adeboye, the RCCG, General Overseer, had  had directed  members    to participate  in the Prayer Walk declared by  CAN, to protest the spate of killings across the country.

Recall that the  US Department of State had blamed the inclusion  of Nigeria to the list of countries  on the xpanded travel ban  list to the Buhari led government for failing   to adequately share public safety  and terrorism related information  necessary for  the protection of the national security.

The US Department of Stated  noted that despite  support  to the Nigerian government  in the global   fight against terrorism  and Border  management  capabilities, the West African country  has not considered  it necessary to improve its information sharing on terrorism matters with the US, fueling speculations making the rounds  that the country was hiding the identity of the terrorists  who are carry out the killings  in the country.

Aware of the country’s  security lapses over the last four years  which had  escalated the   insurgency   in the north eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe and  Bandit attacks in Sokoto, regarded as  the Caliphate state and Katsina, the President , home state, and Zammfara,   Buhari, had met recently with the service Chiefs, at the Council Chambers, State House, to rub mind  on how to adoption new security options to handle the deteriorating  the security challenge of the country .

Nigerians , in diaspora, particular, those in the US, who already  had their green cards  are not happy the government is  doing much to address   the Trump  new Immigration policy which would affect their state in the country.  A source at the Nigerian Immigration Service , NIS,  told our reporter  that  the travel ban  is a big blow to other  Nigerians  who may be hoping   of  relocating  to the US ,to start a new  life through the  lottery process.

The source   disclosed  that the  Nigeria immigrants make up the largest number  of the African Continent immigrants population living in the Us. Feelers from the US embassy, shows that  over   327,000 Nigerians are living in various  states in the country, mostly in  Washington  Seatle,  Dallas, Chicago,  Baltimore, Atlanta, Phoenix and Houston.

It was gathered that in 2018 alone,   the US government had  granted  Nigerians  living in the country  about 14,000 green cards. The citizens  of  other countries  included  in the expanded  travel ban were granted  a  combined total  of 6,000 green cards. There are fears that the figure would drop significantly this year with the Travel ban imposed on Nigeria by Trump.

Last year, Nigeria was  said  to have also  top  the  counties sending  foreign students to the US.  It was said to have had  over 13,000 student studying in different Universities in the North American  country

Cairo Bags International Award for Zero Tolerance on Corruption in NDDC

Dr. Cairo Ojougboh (left) receiving the Distinguished Personality’ Award, a New Face of NDDC, from the Jet Age Nation Builder Organization

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]r. Cairo Ojougboh ,the Executive Director of Projects, Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC) at the weekend bagged a ‘Distinguished Personality’ Award, a New Face of NDDC, from the Jet Age Nation Builder Organization in Rwanda.

The Continental Coordinator, Amb. Young Piero Omatseye, who presented the award on behalf of the  Face of Jet Age Nation Builder and Brand Ambassadors India-Rwanda, Amb. Nayasa Sanghavi, said from the three nominations they got from Nigeria for the Jet age Continental Award, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, the Executive Director of Projects, NDDC is one of them.

Describing the Jet Age Nation Builder as an institution which takes synergy with like minds across Africa and globally in partnership with the United Nation Development Programmes, the Africa Union, the common wealth, captains of industries, world youth organizations, Amb. Omatseye said; “The Jet Age was borne out of the steering committee that we had in 2019 were we found out that we really need individuals to drive processes of zero tolerance to corruption like Rwanda and we came to Delta State with all our stakeholders around.

“People were nominated because of the tireless works they did in their countries and Dr. Cairo Ojougboh fell into this category as a Distinguished Personality of Jet Age, a new Face of NDDC. When we traced the works of Dr. Cairo Ojougboh and his activities in the Niger Delta Development Commission during our investigation, we found out that Dr. Cairo Ojougboh is very transparent in his works as the Acting Executive Director of projects NDDC. With the top secrets that he has leaked from the NDDC, we believed that this is worth emulating at all point and this is in alliance with transparency international.

“We also found out that Executive Director of Projects, was able to leak the mismanaged funds of the commission to the tune of about N1, 447, 750,766,66 in just three years not accounted for. Where is this money? We further checked on his profile to know where he is coming from and we found out that he has a clean slate.

“The Jet Age Nation Builders therefore call on the international communities, human rights agencies to support this Interim Management Committee of the NDDC to make sure they deliver in their promises.”

Earlier, the Executive Director of Projects NDDC, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh while receiving the award, thanked the Jet Age Nation Builders’ Organization for bestowing on him a Distinguished Personality and New Face of NDDC.

He said; “I am most delighted to be so recognized because this award is coming from a country like Rwanda with very impressive record of anti-corruption efforts, a country that is zero tolerance for corruption as number one in Africa in making progress. As a Soldier of truth and National Patron of Soldiers for Truth International Advocacy, I want to say that that no man is hated as much as one who tells the truth; but once you imbibe the spirit of the truth then you will be free. Therefore I am glad that people realize we are telling the truth.”

“On NDDC, the information coming from my table indicates that with three years, about N1.4trilion of emergency contracts, contracts not captured in the NDDC budget and they were mis-accounted and this has caused a lot of problems in the Commission because there is nothing on the ground to show. So, we have started the first phase of the forensic audit which is verification of jobs both ongoing and completed and have gotten a certificate of no objection to appoint a lead Auditor and probably take off the forensic. A lot of people are against the verification and forensic audit because of their selfish interest.

“But we have the courage to face it and if this is the only thing we can do for Nation, it’s enough. We will completely clean NDDC so that an incoming Board will follow the standard, the benefit of the creation of NDDC will be felt by the people of the Niger Delta because the NDDC is supposed to be a vehicle for transforming the Niger Delta and for recognizing and compensating the pains of the rural areas but over the years we have nothing to show for it.

“For instance the Head quarters of NDDC has been ongoing for 30 years from Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPDEC) but since we came the construction has gone far and may be ready for commissioning by the end of March 2020. So we have decided that we are not going to to award mega projects but to complete what we have already on ground.” Ojougboh added.

s To Buy A Liter Of Fuel For N97 Very Soon, FG Assures

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Federal Government says a plan is in motion to provide alternative fuel, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), that would cost between N95 to N97 per litre.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, January 16, 2020.

He noted that CNG has undergone a pilot project in Benin City with over 10,000 vehicles already running on it.

With CNG, Sylva said that the cost of fuel will reduce to about N97 per liter.

“What we have decided is that we should try and give the masses an alternative. That will be to move the masses to CNG. “CNG cost less than the subsidized PMS. Per litre, the subsidized rate of the PMS is N145 per liter. CNG will cost about N95 to N97 per liter,” the minister announced.

While stating that Nigerians would never experience fuel scarcity again, Sylva expressed optimism that the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) will be passed before May 29, 2020.

How Nnia Nwodo, Nnamdi Kanu And IPOB Damaged Biafran Brand In Nigeria

Churchill Okonkwo

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]here is always a huge political risk and danger whenever erratic, embattled, and paranoid leaders assume the responsibility of “protecting” their ethnicity in a multicultural country. The simultaneous emergence of Nnia Nwodo and Nnamdi Kanu (who were both erratic and paranoia) as leaders of Ohaneze Ndigbo and Indigenous People of Biafra respectively was thus unfortunately a bad omen for Igbos in Nigeria.

In the past seven years, IPOB has been praying for calamity to befall Igbos. By promoting hatred, anger and conflict between Ndigbo and herdsmen; Igbos and Yorubas; Igbos and multiple South-south ethnic nationalities; Igbos and Hausas; Igbo and everyone else in Nigeria, IPOB, tried and thankfully, woefully failed to ignite any major conflict. Their intent of imposing upon Ndigbo an eccentric state of falling in love with ourselves made them popular among Igbos.

Unfortunately for Chief Nwodo, he became the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo at a time that the ethnic sentiments whipped up by IPOB have, unfortunately, been accepted by much of Igbos in the street. His authority as the most powerful figure in Igbo affairs (supposedly) was thus threatened by the emergence of a vociferous and divisive character in Nnamdi Kanu. Nnamdi Kanu, through IPOB, did everything to intimidate the Igbo politicians and groups in the middle. Chief Nnia Nwodo was, thus, forced to mimic Nnamdi Kanu in order not to lose the Igbo voice on the streets.

The attempt by Nnamdi Kanu and Nnia Nwodo to outwit each other made them take the extreme position that was and is very divisive in national politics. To remain relevant and avoid the wrath of IPOB Internet soldiers, Chief Nwodo, felt the need to do something groundbreaking to be the man of the people. Chief Nwodo gradually started acting and sounding like Nnamdi Kanu.

In the process, he, unfortunately, dragged Ohaneze Ndigbo into dangerous partisan politics to the extent of openly endorsing a political party, something a cultural group that is apolitical should tactfully avoid. That was the genesis of political miscalculations and blunders that have brought Ndigbo to this cul-de-sac in Nigerian politics. It may take more than a generation to repair the damage caused by Chief Nwodo and Nnamdi Kanu in Nigerian national politics.

It is bad that the market valve of Igbo politicians has been so degraded that even within the PDP, they are all shying away from national politics. This has placed Igbos in a precarious position going into the next round of major politicking at the national level.

The lesson from this is that the politics of nationalism by an ethnic group that is not the majority in a multicultural country could backfire if not handled with the dexterity and care that it deserves. Today it is very easy to mobilize the support of members of any ethnic nationality in Nigeria based on minor, real and perceived cleavages. However, having erratic and ambivalent leaders as spokespersons is bound to be detrimental to any minority ethnic nationality in the complex Nigerian political equation.

As the saying goes, “Cry wolf often enough and you eventually get eaten by the wolf, even if the wolf is you.” The political relevance of Chief Nwodo, Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB were eventually swallowed by the wolf that they have been crying for years. Now, Nnamdi Kanu is on the run, just like Odimegwu Ojukwu. Chief Nnia Nwodo, on the other hand, was reduced to a weak political figure after he failed in his attempt to help Chief Atiku Abubakar win the 2019 presidential election.

There is a saying that unless we learn to know ourselves, we run the danger of destroying ourselves. These are two characters, Chief Nwodo and Nnamdi Kanu, who failed to think before talking may have destroyed the Igbo political class in Nigeria.

Finally, the truth is that however much it rains on us; no wild banana tree will grow on our heads. No wild banana will grow on the heads of Igbo politicians soon in Nigeria after the damage caused by Nnia Nwodo, Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB.

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. For success, be it in having a restructured political system in Nigeria or having a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction, the Igbo political class will need to work with other ethnic nationalities for any meaningful progress.

If the pestle misses the mortar, it pounds the ground. Chief Nnia Nwodo, Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB completely missed the mortar. They have pounded the ground and damaged the pestle.

It may be difficult to whitewash the fact that Chief Nnia Nwodo, Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB have destroyed the market value of Igbo politicians in Nigeria. They have damaged the Biafran Brand.

To repair the damaged Biafran brand, what Igbos need now is hope, not fear. We should renegotiate the tension between reckless, self-expression and strategic action. There was no strategic action in the activities of IPOB over the last couple of years. There was also no strategic plan and thus no political achievement by Ohaneze under the leadership of Nnia Nwodo.

Nnia Nwodo and Nnamdi Kanu failed. Unfortunately to acknowledge that gaining support is an art, involving the ability to justify an agenda, establish credibility, appreciate what the other party is looking for, and remaining politically astute.

Finally, on this day as we mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Nigerian Biafran Civil War, a true honor for Biafran Soldiers who fought gallantly during the civil war is a paradigm shift to a Renaissance with political goals that will refresh and perpetuate Igbos through education, proactive political engagement in such a manner that will ensure that Igbos grow and thrive in an open Nigerian society.
