[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said Monday the Catholic Church in Nigeria had offered its 425 hospitals and clinics nationwide as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients.
Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, disclosed this at the PTF media briefing in Abuja.
He said the rising COVID-19 cases across Nigeria were due to the increased testing capacity in the country.
Mustapha said: “During the first week, the country generally recorded high cases. This is attributable to our expanded capacity for testing with the opening up of more testing centres and laboratories. As at today, there are 21 laboratories nationwide including private laboratories.
“We have encouraged states to have at least 300-bed isolation centres including intensive care units. However, with the increase in cases, we have begun to experience some shortages of bed spaces in the isolation centres.
“As part of efforts to support the states in the establishment of isolation and treatment centres, I wish to remind our state governors that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference has offered and volunteered all the 425 hospitals and clinics that belong to the Catholic Mission nationwide for adaptation and use as an isolation centres. Governors are encouraged to approach Catholic Bishops and Arch-Bishops in their states to access these facilities.”
[dropcap]R[/dropcap]esidents of Ogharefe in Oghara town of Delta State have expressed worries over recent upsurge of snakes found around the town. This is coming on the heels of several residents suffering from snakebites. At the weekend, a woman (name withheld) was heard shouting on the evening of Friday, while struggling with a snake just a few steps away from her house.
The said woman was on her way to church after the restriction on movement was partially lifted when she mistakenly stepped on the tail of the snake. It became a battle, as the snake immediately curled itself around her left leg. While she struggled to kick it off, it ended up biting her several times.
Eventually, the snake left the woman and she quickly ran to her house crying for help. While she was shouting, one Mrs. Josephine Obriki, an eyewitness rushed to the scene with a cutlass, but the snake escaped. The woman was then taken to a nearby hospital where she was stabilized and given an anti-snake venom vaccine.
Residents of the area said there have been influx of snakes lately, as another woman was nearly bitten on Sunday afternoon but she quickly rushed to safety upon sighting it.
A similar event occurred at a school in the area when a snake bit a man on his hand while he was clearing grasses, but the affected man left it untreated because he felt it was a bite from a small snake. Days later, his hand started shaking severely and he told someone about it who then took him to a hospital. On getting there, the affected man started having a seizure, it took the prompt intervention of doctors at the general hospital to save his life.
Yesterday, one Mrs. Edesiri, a resident of Ogharefe, reported the death of a young man after a snake attacked him on Sunday.
“The snake bit him in front of his house and he didn’t have urgent access to medical care. People took him to a herbalist instead of a hospital and he died this morning.”
People in that area are now living in fear because these snakes show up unexpectedly to cause havoc. “We don’t know where they are hiding, I guess it is the rain that is making them come out of their holes and we fear for our lives and that of our children, especially now that schools are closed because of the coronavirus lockdown,” said Mrs. Comfort Ajorudon.
It would be recalled that an average of 20,000 cases of snakebites are recorded in Nigeria annually, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said last year in Abuja during the maiden commemoration of the International Snakebite Awareness Day in the country. He said Nigeria was among the countries worst affected by snakebites and it occurs predominantly in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Nasarawa, Plateau, Enugu, Kogi, Kebbi, Oyo, Benue and Taraba states.
According to the minister, the country also records 2,000 deaths and about 1,700 to 2,000 amputations because of snake bites annually.
[dropcap]N[/dropcap]ineteen leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State comprising past deputy governor’s, former speakers and former members of the National Assembly, among others, have vowed to unseat Governor Godwin Obaseki over alleged incompetence, mismanagement of about N350 billion revenue that has accrued to the state. The group, which is led by two former deputy governors of the state, Dr Pius Odubu and Luck Imasuen, vowed in a statement signed by the 19 leaders to remove the incumbent governor from office on account of alleged bad governance, embezzlement and improper handling of the present Coronavirus epidemic in the state.
They observed that rather than throwing tantrums at the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole, and blame others for the problems facing the state, the governor should list what his administration has done with the N350 billion revenue that had accrued to the state in recent times
“Contrary to the resort to personalised attacks by Governor Obaseki on the APC national chairman who is not contesting any election, we are confronting Obaseki with evidence of bad governance, embezzlement of state funds, destruction of democratic culture, wicked demonisation of those on whose backs he rose to power and systematic destruction of APC that brought him to power,” they posited.
According to the leaders, there is no single project worthy of commissioning in the state as the governor moves towards the end of his tenure, adding that even in the current fight against COVID-19, the governor does not care about the sufferings of the people but was busy converting the opportunity for embezzlement, embarking on political campaigns under the guise of sensitisation campaigns against the Coronavirus.
They also dismissed allegation by Governor Obaseki that Oshiomhole participated in the mock governorship primary held in Benin, describing him as a serial liar for blaming Oshiomhole and the purported mock primary for the spike of COVID-19 cases in Edo State. They argued that there was no time in the state were members gathered or flouted the COVID-19 guidelines on gathering and social distancing as claimed by the Obaseki administration
“We vehemently deny any involvement of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in our activities. We also state emphatically that there was no crowded meeting of 20 persons or more by this body of APC leaders anywhere in Edo state in recent time. “We hereby challenge Governor Godwin Obaseki to prove his allegation of a crowded meeting of more than 50 persons by releasing a video of such event,” the APC leaders declared.
They described the attempt by the Obaseki administration to drag Oshiomhole’s name into the activities of APC members in Edo State as blackmail and disrespect to the national chairman, whom they said his excellent performance while in government remains the selling point for the party in the state. The leaders maintained that “till today, there is no lockdown in Edo State in order to avoid spending on palliatives. Yet, he moved markets to school premises in the entire state with a promise to fumigate the markets statewide,” a promise they claimed was never fulfilled till date.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Socio-Economic Right and Accountability Project, SERAP, has reacted to the demolition of two hotels by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, describing the action as executive rascality.
The rights body condemned the demolition of Prodest Hotel by Wike, and vowed to take action.
“We condemn the reported demolition of Prodest Hotel by Gov Wike, Rivers State.
“Using COVID-19 to perpetrate human rights violations is executive rascality & Mr Wike must stop this now.
“We’re taking legal action to hold him & his govt. to account for illegal actions.
“The demolition of Prodest Hotel is forced evictions and in violation of article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and other human rights treaties to which Nigeria is a state party,” SERAP said on its twitter handle.
Wike had on Sunday supervised the demolition of two hotels in Eleme and Onne for violating the Executive Order 6 of the state government, which banned the operations of hotels amid the lockdown in order to check the spread of coronavirus.
“Government has no alternative but to apply the Executive order, which I signed before the lockdown of Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt. I called all the traditional rulers and council chairmen and told them to ensure that no hotel operates in the state,” he said.
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s Nigeria set to adopt the Madagascar herbal remedy as cure for COVID-19, the World Health Organisation( WHO) has advised governments to clinically test the herbal drink touted by Madagascar’s President, Andry Rajoelina, as a remedy against Coronavirus.
The COVID-Organics infusion is derived from artemisia – a plant with proven anti-malarial properties – and other indigenous herbs.
Rajoelina said the herb cures COVID-19 patients within 10 days.
Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and the Niger Republic have already received consignments of the potion. Others such as Tanzania have expressed interest.
But the World Health Organisation has repeatedly warned that there are no published scientific studies of the herbal tea and that its effects have not been tested.
“We would caution and advise countries against adopting a product that has not been taken through tests to see its efficacy,” WHO Africa Director, Matshidiso Moeti, said in a press briefing on Thursday, calling on Madagascar to take the drink “through a clinical trial”.
Moeti said that in 2000, African governments had committed to taking “traditional therapies” through the same clinical trials as other medication.
“I can understand the need, the drive to find something that can help,” Moeti said. “But we would very much like to encourage this scientific process in which the governments themselves made a commitment.”
Rajoelina defended his tonic during a Coronavirus screening campaign in Madagascar’s Eastern city of Toamasina and promised to submit the drink to clinical trials.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he ancient Kingdom of Idumuje Ugboko ruled by a hereditary monarchy is one of Nigeria’s busiest pathways to the Northern hinterlands and Federal Capital. The peace loving people of Idumuje Ugboko are mostly proud traditionalists and Agro-economy rural natives and , as enchanting as a streaking morning sunrise, a serene landscape blessed the people of Anioma inside the Aniocha Local Government Area of Delta State.
Grassroots Publishers are compelled to write this piece because,we have been reading for sometime now, misguided articles targeted to blackmail and malign the person of Ned Nwoko, especially from one Azuka Jebose. we have been reading with heavy heart and unbelief the endless lies peddled by one Azuka Jebose reportedly based in Maryland, United States.
Why is Azuka Jebose after Prince Ned Nwoko’s hard built name, who are his sponsors and what are his benefits.? All this cynicism and misinformation by him is myopic and is geared towards one motive and that is to smear the name of an Innocent man prince Dr Ned Nwoko. The bombast, the delusional allegation and the embrace of ignorance by Azuka Jebose and his sponsors, “stand singularly alone at the top of a previously unreachable pyramid.”
The long-established rule of fairness, one of the greatest products of noble men is calling a spade a spade . Azuka is a Journalist who takes delight in falsehoods with deliberate intent to deceive or incite the public; his hubby is to feed the public with intentional falsehood thereby inciting them to violence.
The crude manner he has dabbled into the affairs of Idumuje-Ugboko kingdom by telling all sorts of lies against renowned philantropist, Hon. Prince Ned Nwoko and other notable members of the Nwoko Royal family is an indication that he is either hired by mischief makers or seeking for recognition to feed from the wicked deception he is creating on social media to dent the good image of our beloved Prince Ned NWOKO.
Prince Ned Nwoko is a blessed illustrous son of the Nwoko Royal Dynasty of Idumuje-Ugboko, with so much love for his birth place. The best legacy he ever willed to achieve in life, he had decided to cite in the local agrarian community of Idumuje-Ugboko a Multi-Billion Naira University.
The controversial issues of the STARS University land, occasioned by the traditional crisis in Ugboko and false claims of a strayed relationship with the people of Onicha-Ugbo were mentioned,we feel there is the need to make some clarifications, because we believe that nobody can blackmail Prince Ned Nwoko, a British oriented international lawyer of his class. Again,we feel the said Azuka Jebose is not well informed about what had transpired in Ugboko since Prince Nonso Nwoko and his cohorts allegedly refused allowing Ned Nwoko to have the land allocated to him by his father, Obi Albert Nwoko to establish the STARS University, Idumuje-Ugboko, Prince Ned Nwoko should be celebrated for citing the University at his Homeland instead of somewhere else, for the love of his people and community”.
Prince Ned Nwoko is not just a reputable lawyer who had become famous globally. He is enormously wealthy to cite such a University anywhere in Nigeria. we are aware that the monarch of Ubulu-Okiti even offered to donate land to him, but he preferred Idumuje-Ugboko, as Prince Ned Nwoko wants his people and Community to be the first beneficiaries of
his wealth. The Star University will outlive everybody and become a perpetual legacy, not only for the memory of Prince Ned Nwoko but for Idumuje-Ugboko community because the project will attract infrastructure, social amenities, tourism, economic advancement, educational empowerment and several other benefits to Idumuje Ugboko.
Ned Nwoko has done much more for his people than government, and by extension, his goodwill and philanthropy have transcended beyond Anioma, Delta State, Nigeria and now Africa. So, leave Ned alone to do what he is called and destined to do, which is building capacity for his people through Educational Scholarships and Empowerments, and developing his
community with infrastructure, tourism and the University project. He is a man of goodwill, his type can never be found in today’s generation of Anioma. So, blackmailing or maligning him is like pouring water on a mountain; it will definitely comes back to you.
As far as we had reported the STARS University and issues surrounding that project, there is nothing like strayed relationship between the people of Onicha-Ugbo and Prince Ned Nwoko. Few years ago when the Onicha-Ugbo road became so bad that they needed money to repair it, it was Prince Ned Nwoko that donated fund to Onicha-Ugbo Youths to fix the roads, even when
the community could boast of wealthy sons and daughters.
The Idumuje-Ugboko and Onicha-Ugbo portions of the Abuja road was fixed at the cost of N100 million by Prince Ned Nwoko, which he contracted to ULO Consultants. He didn’t cut off Onicha-Ugbo, because he is for everybody. It is our advice to you Azuka Jebose and your cohorts to stop dabbling into the affairs of Idumuje-Ugboko as you are not knowledgeable to speak or write in that regards. It is also our candid advise that you and your sponsors should stop peddling lies against STARS University land issues and Hon. Prince Ned Nwoko as the people are far better enlightened and informed to accept the gabble you post on social media.
It is instructive to note that after the unfortunate crises that rocked Idumuje-Ugboko for over 5 years, a peace process has been instituted by a Committee of Traditional Rulers ably led by our revered royal father, His Royal Majesty, Obi Emmanuel Efeizomor II, the Obi of Owa Kingdom with the full support of other Kings in Anioma.
We have the firm belief that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. Therefore, the actions of everyone at this critical time should be guided accordingly in order not to jeopardize the peace process as we cannot afford to go back to the trenches.
“We say NO to Malicious Lies and blackmail by reactionary forces of violence.
Chief Ambrose Elofu-Dike Chairman of Umudike Farms Limited and Hotel De Espana
[dropcap]C[/dropcap]hief Ambrose Elofu-Dike,The Chairman of Umudike Farms Limited and Hotel De Espana, has commended the state government efforts for doing everything humanly possible to curtail the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the state.
Elofu-Dike, who was speaking in one of the Orphanage Homes in Warri on Friday, noted that the state government, under the watch of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, had been proactive by using the sensitisation machinery at its disposal through the bureau to educate and sensitise residents on the nature and preventive measures against the dreaded virus before it eventually manifested in the state. He said the effort was geared towards saving lives of residents from the virus, adding that government would continue to checkmate the spread of the virus in the state.
The farmer maintained that the lockdown order of the state government was not a punitive measure against residents, but a deliberate decision to curb the spread of the virus and enjoined residents of the state to complement the good intentions of government by complying with directives put in place to ensure the safety of the people from the dreaded pandemic.
Elofu-Dike spoke on the need for residents to appreciate the present situation in the state, adding that government alone could hardly win the daunting war against the dreaded virus, as no country in the world could feed the entire citizenry without the assistance of corporate organisations and public spirited individuals.
He said the state government meant well with its palliative measures to cushion the effect of the earlier stay-at-home order, stressing that all hands should be on deck to ensure that the state government succeeded in its strong determination to curb the spread of the virus in the state.
He said that the coronavirus pandemic was impacting negatively on businesses adding consumption was not as high as it used to be because people were under the lockdown. The business leader said if the situation continued as it is quite a number of businesses would be unable to meet their obligations noting that the government should support the business sector.
He said the coronavirus pandemic was sufficient reason for most businesses to declare ‘force majeure’ in which they would be unable to meet their responsibilities. He has called for collaboration between different tiers of government to fight the spread of coronavirus. He called on critical stakeholders and opinion leaders in the communities to ensure that the right information on what the state government was doing to stem the tide of the virus in the state got to the public at all times.
[dropcap]N[/dropcap]yesom Wike, Executive Governor of Rivers State has directed its attorney-general and commissioner for justice to auction all vehicles that were impounded for violating the state’s lockdown directive.
The government also warned residents of ward 20, Amadi-Ama in Port Harcourt local government area (LGA) and Mgbuosimini, Rumueme in Obio/Akpor LGA to desist from flouting the directives on lockdown.
In a statement by Paulinus Nsirim, the state commissioner for information and communications, the state government said it would “deal decisively” with any residents found guilty of such action.
It directed those interested in the auctioned vehicles to get more details in some selected newspapers.
“Government will deal decisively with the residents of these areas if they are found to default again,” it said.
“Anyone parading exemption letters except the one issued by the Governor is doing so at his or her own risk as such permits are invalid.
“The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice has been directed to auction all the vehicles that violated the lockdown order.
“Members of the public who are interested to buy the auctioned vehicles are to watch out for details in The Sun, The Nation and Vanguard Newspapers.”
Nyesom Wike, governor of the state, had earlier directed that any hotel or taxi found operating during the lockdown should be impounded and auctioned.
The state task force was ordered to enforce compliance with the regulation, including the closure of markets and pubs across the state.
The governor also said traditional rulers of domains where market activities continued would lose recognition and that shops opened during lockdown would be demolished.
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n atmosphere of pandemonium enveloped Okpanam community in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State in the early hours of on Thursday, as youths protested the gruesome murder of the Chairman of the community vigilance group, Mr. Emeka Nwaedozie, by suspected to be Fulani herdsmen kidnappers.
Also killed, while on a mission to rescue earlier kidnapped victims, was a member of the group, simply identified as Face, a native of Onicha-Ugbo, but resident in Okpanam.
The youths, who were highly incensed by the unwholesome act, blocked both sides of the Benin/ Asaba expressway by Okpanam Junction, making bonfires for more than two hours.
It took the intervention of military men from the 63 Brigade, Asaba, police men and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC), to placate the youths and restore normalcy on the highway.
A community source disclosed to reporter that the Vigilante Chairman received a distress call at about 8:00pm, on Wednesday night, that a woman and her daughter living at Government Cooperative Estate across the Benin/Asaba expressway by Okpanam junction had been kidnapped.
Our source revealed that he quickly contacted one of his members to accompany him on the rescue mission. It was also alleged that before he left with his men, he had a discussion with the a flower of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Okpanam Police Station, who, according to our source, had also received information about the kidnap incident.
Speaking to reporter, Secretary of the vigilante group, Mr. Joseph Ijeh, added that he was reliably informed that when the kidnappers heard the noise of the motorcycle ferrying the vigilante men coming towards them, they ran into the bush and took cover.
Ijeh alleged that, as soon as the men rode past where the kidnappers were hiding, they (kidnappers )opened from behind, killing Emeka and Face, while the other vigilante member, who escaped with gunshot wound and currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, escaped into the bush.
At an emergency meeting held in the Palace of the Ugoani of Okpanam, HRM (Dr.) Michael Mbanefo Ogbolu, the royal father, who was visibly pained, appealed to the people, particularly the youths, to eschew any act of violence, stressing that the incident had subjected the community to sorrow. The Monarch told them that there was need to minimize the casualty, adding the spirit of good leadership should take the place of emotion in the present circumstance.
He urged them to remain calm, as measures would be taken, in collaboration with the state government and security agencies, for adequate security coverage of the community.
In his response, the President of the community youth organization, Comrade Friday Okonkwo, assured the Ugoani and the Council members, that he and his executive would take necessary steps to ensure there was no violence, and called on the community leaders to do the needful as the occasion demanded.
Meanwhile, many residents in the area where the kidnap incident took place, are now relocating to safer places, complaining that kidnapping was becoming rampant in the area.
Speaking to reporter, a landlord, who did not want his name in print, said that the late vigilante chairman, was so committed to his assignment and was always working round- the -clock to checkmate the incidence of crime in the area.
He, however, appealed to the community leaders and the state government to come to their aid by relocating the Fulani herdsmen from their present abode at the Okpanam bypass and their camp situated across the Benin/Asaba expressway, pointing out that some of the kidnappers use those places as their operational bases.
[dropcap]S[/dropcap]ecurity agents on Wednesday averted what could have turned into a bloodbath between hoodlums and traders at Abraka- Asaba market.
Trouble was said to have started in early hours of the day when suspected hoodlums disguised as taskforce members with Asaba Development Capital Terrority, engaged traders who have refused to relocate from the demolished market in fierce verbal altercations which subsequently resulted to a gun battle.
Delta state Police Commissioner, Hafiz Muhammed Inuwah who confirmed this to Journalists, said that the timely intervention of the police and other security agents saved the situation and calmed frayed nerves.
Though no lives were lost, Inuwah said 30 suspected hoodlums were arrested for interrogation.
Sources said that the return of the traders who were sacked from the demolished market few months ago, was informed by the partial lockdown by the state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa in the wake of the Coronavirus Pandemic currently ravaging the world.
An eyewitness, Umukoro James said that the traders, particularly the Hausa traders, have allegedly been at war with the officials of the taskforce who claimed to have relocated them to Oko Community in Asaba where they were expected to have commenced sale of their goods including food items.
The new site for the traders, investigation revealed, was rejected by traders due to the deplorable state of the environment, which is swampy and prone to flooding during the rainy season.
An Hasua trader who gave his name Adamu Sulaiman, who spoke to Journalists in the area said “we were shocked this morning when some persons came into the premises of Asaba- Abraka market while we were hanging around to see how we could eke out living because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, suddenly they started shooting into the air, claiming they were taskforce of Mrakpor destroying makeshift stalls.
“They said we should move into Oko Community where they claimed to have allocated and relocated us to, but the environment is completely water, how can we do business in such a place? We will not go there the environment is terrible and full of water, water.”
Further investigation revealed that since the introduction of the compulsory use of face masks in public places, many of the Hausa traders have called it a bluff and do not bother about its use in spite of threats to Isolate violators by the state government; an observation made by the suspected hoodlums when they allegedly stormed the area and started shooting into the air to eject the traders from the premises.
The mayhem led to a long traffic holdup starting from Okwe Junction to the market.
However there was a heavy presence of Policemen, Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Immigration Officers and Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC) to maintain law and order and ensure free flow of vehicular movements towards the Asaba – Onitsha head bridge and other adjourning streets along the Expressway.
