In a healthcare system often criticized for poor patient relations and unfriendly hospital environments, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) is earning praise for demonstrating that compassion and professionalism can still thrive within public medical institutions.
During a recent visit to the hospital, I witnessed firsthand the remarkable level of care and dedication displayed by the medical staff. From doctors and nurses to porters and other support staff, the atmosphere within the hospital reflected a culture of respect, empathy, and commitment to patient welfare.
Across many government hospitals in Nigeria, patients frequently complain about the attitude of some healthcare workers. In some facilities, particularly overcrowded public hospitals, patients and their relatives sometimes struggle to obtain information or basic assistance.
Questions are occasionally met with impatience, and in extreme situations, some families feel abandoned during critical moments of medical emergencies.
However, the experience at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital presents a refreshing contrast.
At UBTH, the staff appear to place patient care at the center of their responsibilities. Visitors are able to ask questions and receive guidance without fear of hostility or intimidation.
Regardless of social or economic background, patients are treated with dignity and attention.
During my visit to the hospital’s Triage Emergency Department, the dedication of the medical team was particularly noticeable. Doctors and nurses worked tirelessly, attending to patients with a level of attentiveness that resembled the care and concern parents show their children. Even in the midst of a busy and demanding environment, they maintained calm professionalism while ensuring that every patient received prompt attention.
Equally impressive was the attitude of the hospital’s porters and other support staff, whose role in patient care is often overlooked. Their willingness to assist patients and guide visitors through the hospital created a welcoming environment rarely seen in many government medical facilities.
Such commitment does not happen by accident. It reflects the culture established by the leadership and management of the institution. The management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital deserves commendation for fostering a system where professionalism, discipline, and compassion guide the conduct of healthcare workers.
In an era when public confidence in government hospitals sometimes wavers, UBTH stands as an encouraging example of what quality healthcare service should look like in Nigeria. The hospital demonstrates that with proper leadership, training, and dedication, public health institutions can deliver both medical excellence and humane treatment.
For many patients and families who walk through its doors, UBTH represents more than just a place for treatment—it is a place where people are treated with respect, dignity, and genuine care.
Indeed, if patient-centered care is the benchmark of a great hospital, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital has clearly set a commendable standard.
