Meanwhile, Deltans who reside in the adjoining communities and motorists plying the earlier deplorable Asaba-Ugbolu-Ilah federal road in Delta State, have heaved a sigh of relief, following the nearly completed ongoing rehabilitation work on the road.

The Asaba-Ugbolu-Ilah road which is a major shortcut for motorists from Delta and the Eastern states to Abuja through Edo State had been in a state of despair for more than two years which occasioned drivers to seek alternative routes.

Recall that residents of Ugbolu and Illah communities in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state have continually decried the deplorable condition of the Asaba-Ugbolu-Illah federal road, calling for its repair.

Residents had described the road as a death trap and needed urgent government intervention to alleviate the suffering of the road users and save them from robbery attacks by bandits who usually waylay them at the many bad spots.

The Deputy President of the Senate, who was conducted round the projects by officials of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing as well as FERMA, was accompanied on the inspection by his Delta North Senatorial District counterpart, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi and his Chief of Staff, Dr. Otive Igbuzor, as well as several leaders of the APC in Delta North Senatorial District.

After being conducted round the ongoing rehabilitation work, Senator Omo-Agege, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, said he was satisfied with the extent of work and its quality undertaken by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), adding that the rehabilitation will be completed as scheduled.

He added that rehabilitation of the road by the Federal Government was made possible due to the synergy enjoyed by himself and Senator Nwaboshi, whom he said had put partisan politics aside in order to attract dividends of democracy to Delta

According to him, “When the Illah Development Union (IDU) came crying to me over the deplorable condition of road, I sent for Senator Peter Nwaboshi. We put our heads together on what could be done. Senator Nwaboshi occupies one of the powerful Committee in the Senate. We haven’t decided to provide you all the roads, I crave your indulgence to be more patient.

“Since I am not the only senator and I alone could not meet their request, I called a meeting of my colleagues where it was decided that I should approach the Federal Ministry of Works. We are thankful to President Buhari for approving the rehabilitation of the road, and also we are thankful to the Works Minister, Mr. Raji Fashola.”

“We are doing what the electorate are asking of us. It is not just about capital development but most importantly, the things that will be impactful on their lives.”o

Senator Omo-Agege, who previously served as the Secretary to State Government of Delta State was hosted to a warm reception by the people of Illah community in Delta North Senatorial District in appreciation of his development strides in Illah in particular and across Delta State in general, where he made promises of more development dividends of democracy.

On his part, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) assured the people of Illah, that their requests for 500 electricity poles, construction of Otu-Umute and Otu-Onya roads and a jetty in the community would be provided, adding that 500 electric poles will be accommodated in the 2021 budget.

Earlier, an APC Chieftain from Illah, Barrister Onwuadiamu and the party chairman in Oshimili North, Chief Ozor Njoagwuani, appreciated Senator Omo-Agege for the efforts he had put in to make the road rehabilitation a reality, adding that the people of Illah community believe in the leadership of the Deputy Senate President come 2023.
